had
an
opportunity to get down
to the Club this month
as we wind down
Summer 2016. We had a
special event on August
20 – Hot August Nights.
Thanks to Roselle Nottage and everyone who
helped get that event organized.
As I write this article for September I am also
looking at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center
webpage – and we have two storms churning to the
east of us. The current track from the weather
guessers has one, Madeline, going south of the Big
Island on Friday, September 2and the other, Lester,
going north of the islands on Saturday, September 3.
I walked the dry storage areas and the piers early
this morning and there are definitely some boats
that could use some attention, securing loose
items, etc. If your boat is stored at the club, please
take the time to check on it and make sure you are
ready for bad weather. Our storm season runs
through November and it’s not over till it’s over.
A number of boats have been taking
advantage of the maintenance area adjacent to the
north hoist, and that’s great. That’s why we have
that area designated. Please remember to
coordinate all these activities with the Port
Captain, be cognizant of others trying to use the
hoist and ramp, and follow our Best Management
Practices at all times when working on your
vessel. These practices help protect the Bay, and
you from environmental hazards. Copies are
available from the office upon request.
As I mentioned last month, we are working
on a number of repair and maintenance projects
around the club, most of you have probably
noticed the repairs to the upper deck area, and
soon we will be working on the longhouse floor.
Fabrication work for repairs to E Pier is already
underway and shortly work will begin on-site on
both E and G Piers. These repairs will help extend
the useful service life of these critical club assets
and protect our investment in the Club.
Take care of yourselves and each other, and
take time to both enjoy the club and participate in
making it better. Thanks to all of you out there that
work hard to make the club what it is.

Right on the heels of a
fervent Pacific Cup, came
the first race of August,
the Kauai Channel Race.
Several years ago the
Nawiliwili Yacht Club
was searching for an
alternate start to avoid the
inconsistent winds off the leeward coast of Oahu.
KYC stepped up to the plate when asked. The race
now faces consistent trades throughout the course
when trades are present (remember 2015?). This
year was no exception With Intuition coming out on
top on corrected time. Heartbeat was first to finish.
Thank you to Charlie and Iwalani Stone for starting
the race.
The Waimea Bay Race saw six racers and three
non-racers sailing to Waimea. Isaac Gillette onboard
his Melges 24 Maka'Ala won a hard fought battle for
first place. Sailing along the fleet of 4 Melges 24s, an
Antrim 27 and a Kaufman 39 was a Laser sailed by
Mark Denzer, a Nacra Inter 20 sailed by Tim Roy and
Wayne Reis on his Catalina 34. Tim completed the
race far in advance of all other boats. Not sure we
can rate a Nacra with trapeze in an ocean race, but
man, they were rocking. Congratulations to all.
Other events included the Riddle Regatta, IRF
D2, Class Boat J and the Tennis Tournament and
shrimp boil. All these events happen because regular
members like you and I step up to organize them.
Please show your appreciation for those that work
tirelessly to make it all happen.
The next two months are our busiest in the racing
season with State Championships and other unique
events throughout. I hope to see many of you on the
race course.
There are a couple of initiatives that need to be
addressed in the coming months as well. The first is
the re-plumbing of the north hoist. We are looking for
a few volunteers to help out with this. Additionally,
we looking to revamp our boat maintenance program
for the boats Kaneohe Yacht Club owns. if you or
someone you know would be interested in helping
with either of these initiatives, please let me or
someone in the office know.

FIRST HAWAIIAN BOAT TO FINISH TROPHY –
awarded to the first boat skippered by a resident of
Hawaii to finish on corrected time, this is a three-foot
tall carved wooden statue of King Kamehameha.
“We landed with the Darby threat with 1.5 hours at the
dock, then we were kicked out until all the boats left.
Chasch Mer has just been cleaned and a lot of stuff
fixed while the Port Captain has allowed us to stay at
the end of G. Mike has been very understanding as

Tennis Fleet Fun in the Sun in August
The Tennis Fleet split the fun this month with the tournament on
August 13 and the World Famous Fleet Shrimp Boil was held on August
27. Always nice to shake things up a bit!!
The tournament was the normal good fun with the usual rain
showers, blinding sun and wonderful competition. Some of these
matches are worthy of coming to watch; we don’t need to be tennis pros
to have a great match.
The winners of the ladies were First – Sime Gross, 2nd – Betsy
Denzer, and 3rd – Susie Jannuzzi. The men’s winners were First – Greg
Siok, 2nd – Bob Yoder, and a three way tie for 3rd – John Gross, Aaron
Phillips, and Harvey Minksy.
Doug and Margaret Peebles were the charming host and hostess for
the Annual Shrimp Boil. Their lovely home on the bay is a great
location for a party, (the Isayamas arrived by boat) and almost 60 fleet
members gathered to enjoy the evening. Cooking was done under the
trees and went off without a hitch; these ladies have got this down to a
science. Thanks to Jean Fernie for the task of making sure all the
necessary food items were assembled and Sime Gross, Terry Beuret,
JoAnn Goebert and Betsy Denzer were cooks extraordinaire. They had
many helpers and everyone had a great time.
It was announced that the December catered dinner will be on
Friday, December 30. Be sure and save that date!! There will be a
meeting in October to choose a theme and menu.
The Clare Lang Mixed Doubles Tournament is coming up soon so
players need to be looking for a partner. Let Rob Rietow know when
you have one. The Pot Luck will be at Susie Jannuzzi and Dave White’s
home. More on that soon.
Ladies Monthly Tennis Round Robin and Potluck Lunch
On the third Friday of every month you will find the ladies of
KYC and guests playing some very fun tennis all morning before
they gather for a wonderful potluck luncheon. This is not a Tennis
Fleet event…..it is open to all ladies of KYC and their guests and
there are all levels of play…….we welcome beginners and experienced players……..we will match players up so that everyone has
fun.
We will send out an email to all members of the club before the
event with a number to call if you are interested. Or you can call
Donlei at 226-2446 for more information.

Aloha! Summer is just about over and I hope you
all got some good sailing in! Get your Toros ready
because Bullship is coming up on September 18. If you
plan on using a club boat be sure to reserve it with Jesse
early. The boats go fast. For those of you who want to
keep sailing during the school year the Fall Sailing
Program starts on September 24. I also wanted to let you
know that we’ll be having an End of Summer Potluck
on Friday, September, 23 in the Gazebo. Bring something to share for dinner and
join us for the last night of Friday Night Dinghy racing. Hope to see you there!
Not all the racing this summer was done on Oahu. A few of the KYC Juniors
traveled to Lahaina Yacht Club the weekend of August 13 & 14 to compete in the
4th Annual Dinsmoor Regatta held in Fevas and Bics. Kaila and Lauren Baker,
Kahala Furukawa and I joined the Hawaii Kai Boat Club and the folks at Lahaina
YC for some fun racing. This is the second time I’ve raced in this regatta and it’s
really fun! Next year we should try to get more kids out. Mahalo to everyone who
made our trip possible.

On August 27 the KYC Deckhands and Fishing Fleet hosted Wounded
Warriors and their families to a day at the Sandbar. The weather was amazing.
Four boats took 30 Warriors and their families out for a day of fun and lunch.
Mahalo to the boat Captains: John Clancy and Lauren Faulkner, David and
Cathy Bello, Charlie Schmucker, Don Brown and Ruthann Quitiquit and Ward
and Beth Yoshimura.
Phyllis Pender gave us a little background on how we were lucky enough to
be involved in such a great event. A friend of Phyllis', Chaplain Steve Jensen
asked if KYC was interested in doing fishing and sailing activities for the
Wounded Warriors. He has been heading the group out at the Kaneohe Marine
Corps Base. The Deckhands and Don Brown were asked to collaborate on setting
up activities for them. It wasn’t long before Don Brown, the Fishing Fleet, the
Sailing Fleet with help from the Deckhands they were soon out on the water.
Everyone’s efforts have now turned into “Day on the Bay”.
Thank you to the fishing fleet and the Deckhands for providing lunch and
KYC members Michael Flumian and Carole Chun for also helping.
PACIFIC CUP
Now that the dust has settled from the fun of Pacific Cup, we would like to
thank a few more of the many volunteers. It took many hands and many hours
to set-up and run the satellite locker. Hopefully we did not miss anyone. Mahalo
to: Lynn Albrecht, Ann Ayling, Toni Baran, Millie Darby, Elin Farrell, Pat
Gilbert, Jo Ann Goebert, Shari Huntoon, Susie Januzzi, Pat Meier, Diane

The Newcomers' Pupu Party will be held on September 24, 2016. New
member check-in will be at 5:30 in Ma Schultz Lounge. Welcome and
introductions by the Board of Directors and at 6:00 PM in the Longhouse with a
Pupu Party to follow. This is a KYC event with the help of the Deckhands. Club
members are asked to bring a pupu to share. Please come and welcome our new
members.

If you missed the last FF Meeting at Leonard
Gollub's you once again missed out on a great
time. Don't think I got home till 2:00AM and that
doesn't happen often. It seems each event we
have this year out-does the previous one. Unbelievable! Mahalo to
everyone who attended and a huge Mahalo to Leonard and Daisy!
There is a lot going on to bring us to the end of the year. I am
including the minutes from our meeting so you who really missed out can
get up to speed.
Please do not miss our next meeting as we have a lot of fun things
coming up! Especially for our Wahine!

Fishing Fleet Meeting was called to order 7:15pm
Meeting/BBQ held at Leonard Gollob's home. Great turn out. Lots of
wonderful food. Terrific time had by everyone. Many thanks given to
Leonard and Daisy.
Discussed last Sandbar Party of the year. It is scheduled for Sat. Oct. 8.
Charlie has new volleyball net. Beau suggested we organize teams, so
she was elected to set that up before the event.
End of Year Christmas Crab Fest, will be held at Diane and Charlie
Schmucker's home on Sat. Nov. 12. This year we will have crab and
brisket dinner. Must be FF member to attend. Men must be dressed in
Fleet shirt or hat. Women can carry in shirt or hat and dress more festive
if they choose to. T shirts and hats were on sale after meeting.
Wahine Tournament to be held in Sept. 24. There will be two awards
given. Open ocean biggest fish. Inside bay biggest fish. Honor system of
rules. Ocean Wahine must reel in the fish, male crew can hand line and
gaff to bring on board. At weigh in, all Captains and male crew, must be
dressed as a Wahine. Hope to make this an annual event.
July tournament winner was Rob Conico with a 98.6 Ahi. Biggest fish
and side bet.
Aug. tournament fish Mahi. Need to be signed up for tournament.
Rob Canonico weighed a 358 lb. Marlin the first week in August. He is
on a roll!
Our monthly meetings will be held on the 2nd Friday of each month, this
will not conflict with First Friday music event.

Yacht Club de Carnac, France,
August 21 - September 2, 2016
We arrived in Carnac, France today. I spent two days on the road and in the
air!!! I met Kevin at the train station in Paris 20 minutess prior to the train leaving
for Auray, the intermediate stop before Carnac. That worked out well.
Our San Francisco and Aussie 14 mates had unloaded and regist'ered the boat
and sails yesterday, which includes weighing it with the rig out. All I did was go
pay the entry fee and drink some beers with old friends while in a daze. Maureen
got us a wonderful place just back from the beach and an 8 minute walk to Carnac
YC. Thanks Maureen! The weather is warm, the breeze today is light and we are
ready to go! It looks like there will be 80 boats from around the world, including
three containers from Australia and over 20 German boats.
Day one at the Worlds started very early because the RC predicted the wind
would die in the afternoon. The start was moved up to 10AM, which meant a
9AM launch with 80 boats in a compressed space. (That alone was enough
exercise for me for the day!) We got off the beach/mud, ran aground with our new
long daggerboard and discovered a mis-rig with the kite pole. We decided to race
anyway for the practice. The breeze was good all morning; a varying offshore
breeze at 8-15 with some big holes and shifts at the top mark near the shore. We
sailed around in the back of the fleet with only one capsize with no kite all day!
We did not complete the course in the time limit allowed racers must finish within
45 minutes of the first boat's finish. Lots of others also missed the limit so on day
one 25% of the fleet got a DNF. The race instructions were amended this afternoon
to allow 90 minutess for the tailenders to get their score. The breeze died in late
AM so the back of the fleet finished in 4-6kts of breeze which accounted for the
large number of DNFs.
Kevin fixed the pole issue and we are ready to battle it out on Day 2. The
courses are very long with one race per day---Thank God.
On the social side Kevin and I have been invited to dinner parties with the
Brits. Domenic and Simona have helped us out with a car when we need it. Lots
of fun, great food and a few glasses of wine. I have seen lots of old friends from
around the world in the dinghy park. We'veshared stories and beers at the club for
the last two days. The container is 20 feet from the boat and our apartment is an
8 minute walk, so the set-up for the week is great. We will be experts at beach and
mud launches by the end of the week..
Tonight Leith is hosting a cocktail party with his new "Gucci booze"
concoctions. He has invited the rowdy portion of the fleet and Kevin and I were
included!
Day 2: The breeze was down all morning and into the early afternoon so we
stayed ashore and fixed boat parts and drank some beer with great baguette and
cheese/jambon sandwiches. The RC finally sent us out in 6 kts of breeze and tried
to start us. After to failed attempts the "Black Flag" went up and the breeze shifted
70 degrees so we waited around again as the entire course was adjusted. As the
time limit got close (no race to start after 4PM) the breeze filled in to a lovely
10-15 knots at 3:40. The fleet got off with the Black Flag still up!
Race 2 We had a reasonable start at the Committee boat end, waiting for the
carnage to clear in front of us, and off we went. The boat was much much faster
than on Day 1. We stayed with the middle of the fleet until just before the weather
mark when a young German team crashed into us full on. They were on Port. I did
my bird call yelling "Starboard, Please don't hit us", but they just ran right into us
and put two holes in the bow area just forward of the mast. The boat has just been
painted dark green so that was not a good look. The holes were 12 inches above
the waterline so we continued to race. The kite pole still had some minor issues
but Kevin did work-arounds and we got back into the mix and finished 56. No
swims and no running into the reefs. We were disappointed not to see they
Germans do circles after I yelled at them twice to do the turns. Ashore they assured
us they did the turns later in the next leg, and they have offered to pay for the
repair. At least I don't have to worry now about putting the first mark on the new
paint job!

On the social side we missed Leith's party because we could not find the
address. After lots of walking around my knee gave out and Kevin and I had a
relatively quiet night. I did find the German house later in the evening and crashed
a French lawn party with James, a young Aussie; crew Maureen and I met in
Toronto. They enjoyed some 101 Wild Turkey whiskey I had brought for Leith's
party. We are looking forward to Race 3.
Race 3: An epic I-14 race in a solid 20kts breeze that built to 25 with higher
gusts in spots near the end of the race. They gave us the longest course yet - W-L,
W-T-L, W-L, W-T-L, and beat back up to the finish with two mile legs. We had a
good start at the Committee end of the line. We tacked to the right side almost
immediately and got to the weather mark in the middle of the fleet. Kevin has
mastered trimming the main in a big breeze and big seas. We had a swim half way
down the run when we jibed going 20kts! We recovered and got back in the race
because lots of boats broke or swam. In the middle of the race we had another
swim and I broke the tiller extension getting back into the boat. After that we
could only sail the trapeze on starboard tack. We sailed the boat as well as we
could until the final beat. We rounded the leeward mark sailed about 200 yards on
port tack, the rubber pin fell out and the rudder kicked up. No steering and a very
long swim which included six capsizes in 25kts and big seas. Truly, the boat
almost got us in a "submission hold" but we didn't tap out (which is pulling the
main halyard).
We finished the race 30 seconds before the time limit and got a standing
ovation from the French RC and rescue boat crews who followed us.We were the
final finish in 49th place. An epic event that Kevin and I will not forget. On the
way in we "submarined" the boat. With the wings full on we ran thru a wave on
the way home that completely submerged the boat in 25kts. It was my first time
doing that with the foils on.
On the social side we passed some 101 proof Wild Turkey around the dinghy
park after the epic sail. We traded sea stories and bonded. We had an Italian dinner
with some American team members and went to bed, completely spent. A Great
Day.
Race 4: Great 14 sailing conditions; 10-12kts of steady breeze that built
during the race. We started in the middle of the line and ate a lot of bad wind from
all the boats that were over early but were not called back. We got flushed out the
back of the fleet, tacked over to the right side and rounded near the back end of
the fleet. We worked our way back up the fleet to 71. There are protests so we are
not sure of the results at this moment. We had no swims and no drama launching
and recovering in the mud flats.
On the social side we were interviewed on TV today by a cute Welsh girl and
her Aussie camera man. We went to a party at a large restaurant in Carnac
organized by the YC. The food was amazing; local white fish for starters and veal
and veggies with small, localpotatoes. The sponsors fueled the 120 people with
whiskey, Pernod and lots of wine. There was a bread food fight and lots of
"carrying on". The younger people went to the German House down the block
from us to continue partying. I lasted an hour at the second party and staggered
down the street to our place. A great day of sailing. Thank God there is a lay day
tomorrow.
After four races they gave us a day off!. We had a nice french style breakfast
at a waterfront cafe with Paul Galvez and Cameron. And on the way to the boat
we ran into Dominic, Simona, Leith, and Katie Nurton driving down the
waterfront in their very small yellow Fiat. They said "jump in"!! We all managed
to slide in - me in the front seat and the four others in the very small back seat.
After we got in we asked the destination. The answer was a fromagerie, cheese
making factory out in the countryside and then a search for the famously magic
stones in this district. The cheese tasting at the factory was incredible. We also
discovered other goodies while testing the cheeses. The nice lady who helped us
suggested an island park area 10 miles away on the coast to have lunch and watch
the 30 foot tide rip in. We found a picnic able on the right side of the tide flow;
ate some cheese and bread, drank local rose wine and cider. Leith and Kevin
waded into the tide rip across the bridge and got cooled off from the summer sun.
We all piled back into the Fiat and went in search of the magic stones. We found
some stones and an old stone church from 1664 after walking through corn fields
for a few miles. It was a great lay day.

FALL 2016 KYC JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM
KYC's 2016 Fall Junior Sailing Classes are held every Saturday from September 24th through November 20th.
Whether or not a student was enrolled in a sailing class before, the Fall Sailing Program is a great opportunity to
get more individual instruction in smaller classes than the Summer Program.
As a primary benefit, the Fall classes are normally a smaller class size so students can take advantage of a better
instructor to student ratio. Students in the Topper class will also have more opportunities to sail by themselves
and accelerate up into other classes at a faster pace. These classes focus on safety, fun and sailing skill building.
In addition to regularly scheduled classes, the program offers participation in local regattas, Friday night Dinghy
Races, and Sunday Laser and 420 Races.
Fall Sailing Program Schedule
Novice Topper Sailing - This is a Learn-To-Sail class for students aged 8 to 18. If a student has little to no
sailing experience or has taken a few years ashore and wants to rediscover sailing, this is the class. Classes are
primarily taught in Toppers, our beginning sailboat. Boats are provided for all students enrolled in this class.
Curriculum will include the basics of sailing, including parts of the boat, points of sail, and boat handling. The
goal of this course is to have fun in a safe and educational atmosphere. Classes will be held on Saturday from
9:30AM to 12:30PM.
Introduction to Racing - This is for the sailor who understands the basic fundamentals of sailing: rigging,
points of sail, docking and terminology. Sailors must be competent in capsize recovery and be able to sail a boat
by themselves. Sailing will be in El Toro’s, Open Bics, & 420’s and will introduce racing skills. The goal of
this class is to improve sailing skills and to gain a basic understanding of sailboat racing and tactics. Classes will
be held on Saturday from 1:30PM to 4:30PM.
Advanced Racing - No messing around!! Junior Sailors interested in more advanced levels of sailing
including racing, tactics, boat handling, and boat maintenance, should enroll in this class. Students who
participate in this class will work closely with students of all ages to improve sportsmanship, leadership and
sailing competence. This class will require more time and effort on the part of the sailor and will require
attendance at local regattas.
El Toro/Open Bic classes will be held from 9:30AM to 12:30PM.
Laser and 420 Classes will be from 1:30PM to 4:30PM.
*** Special Notes for Intermediate and Advanced Class Students: Additional fees for regattas are $10.00. Parent
participation is appreciated to help with loading and unloading of the trailers and transportation of sailors to and from the
regatta sites.
Sunday Class Boat Racing- On scheduled Sundays throughout the Fall, 420s and Lasers are welcome to race
in the KYC Classboat races. The start is at Noon and there will be three races a day around the harbor buoys.
There is no entry fee for the series. If you would like to use one of KYC's 420s, a reservation must be made for
the boat through the KYC Office.
Costs - Fall Sailing Class tuition will be $270 for Members and $320 for Non-members. Tuition for students
registering for both Saturday morning and afternoon classes will be $480 for Members and $565 for
Non-members. A 10% discount is applied for students using their own boat and for sibling signing up at the
same time. No refunds will be available for missed classes.
Registration – Registration paperwork and packets will be handled through the KYC Office. All appropriate
registration forms along with full payment must be completed in order to guarantee a place in the class.
