FROM THE
President
Dear Members:
The Board of Governors recently had the chance to
pay it back to our employees at the Annual Employee
Holiday Party on December 8th. Along with some of
our spouses, we surprised the staff by serving the food
and beverages this year in an effort to thank them for
the hard work and dedication they provide to us each
Ed Rice
day. Check out the photo below of the new serving staff!
Our Executive Vice President, Ron Gallatin, was awarded the “Server of the
Night!” I can personally tell you, the employees were very appreciative of the
party and enjoyed the evening with their families and co-workers.

Seats for the Professional Tennis Exhibition highlighted by the reunion match
between Aaron Krickstein and Jimmy Connors filled quickly with 600
reservations in the first 3 days! At this time a Wait List has been started and
we will be doing everything we can to accommodate all those who wish to
attend. This event is going to be the highlight of the season you won’t want to
miss out on! Aaron, Jimmy Connors and Jimmy Arias will be mingling with
members after the matches at the Grand Slam Street Party and there may be
some photo opportunities.

Our “Frozen” New Year’s Eve Party was another great success thanks to the
ideas and inspiration from our Social Sub-Committee and the execution from
Linda Spielmann, Director of Catering and her team. I hope you all enjoyed
the winter décor and we certainly “de-frosted” the room with all of the
dancing.
We have some terrific entertainment planned for this year. Mark your
calendars for Wednesday, January 21 for the Edwards Twins Show & Dinner
Buffet, and Wednesday, February 28 for the Michelle Balan Comedy Show and
Dinner Buffet.
You will soon be receiving a letter from the Nominating Committee calling for
interested members to run for the Board of Governors. We are lucky to have
such a wide range of qualified members and I hope many you will consider
running for the Board. This is a great way to share your voice, vision, and
business savvy, ensuring St. Andrews continues to be the Best of the Best.
Jody and I hope everyone is having a great start in the New Year! We look
forward to seeing you at all the upcoming events.

The season is underway and I hope everyone had a wonderful
holiday. We welcomed the New Year in “Frozen” grand style with
another great social event.
Now in my eighth year at St. Andrews Country Club as your
General Manager, I am happy to see more members, families and
guests enjoying the facilities and amenities this past holiday
season. Over the past three weeks we have had a record number of
people enjoying dining, golf, fitness, spa, tennis and the pool. The
professional staff is to be commended for a terrific job given the
large number of people enjoying the Club.
Craig D. Martin, CCM,
Chief Operating Officer
and General Manager
Golf and Tennis programs offered more junior programs for the
children than ever before and we appreciate the great feedback from all the
moms to Emma MacHugh on how we can continue to make our activities better
than ever.
The Club is entering its busiest period and hope that you will engage yourselves
in many of the scheduled lectures, entertainment acts and fun we have planned
with input from your fellow members serving on the House and Social
Committees. Our Bridge program continues to grow and I want to thank Bonnie
Rosen for her dedicated professionalism to ensuring our Bridge program is
revered as the best of any club.
The kids are loving the newly remodeled Rec Room – especially the new games
and equipment. Also, if you’re looking for something different for lunch, stop by
Café Blue at the pool where lunch is available Tuesday-Sunday. Cafe Blue offers a
unique lunch menu so if you enjoy dining outside with a water and golf course
view, we have you covered.
The Morgan & Friends Fight Cancer tournament will be held on Monday,
January 5 and I encourage you to sign up in the
Golf Shop and show your support to this great
fundraiser which helps the fight against breast
cancer.
On behalf of the 340 professional staff working
hard to make you happy each day, “Thank You” for
the kind gesture of the holiday gift derived from the
Holiday Fund which was shared with, and
appreciated by, the entire team.
Sincerely,

Dining
I want to start my article with a clarification of a long standing club rule regarding minimum
charges for lunch and dinner, excluding beverages. It has come to my attention that there has
been some ongoing dialogue on this subject so I hope this will help serve to provide the
membership with a clear understanding of this rule.
“There will be a minimum charge for lunch and dinner,
excluding drinks, at both Gallery and Lakeside Grille
restaurants, in an amount to be determined from time
to time by the General Manager or the Board of Governors. Children under the
age of 12 but over 3 years of age will be charged half of the established
minimum. The minimum charge will also be charged to each individual in the
event two or more people share a meal. There shall be Hors d’oeuvres charge for
persons who do not dine in the Gallery after partaking of the hors d’oeuvres in
the lounge.”
Darrell Wilde
Assistant General Manager
d i n i n g
In the General Rules section of the Club Rules & Regulations under the heading “Food and
Beverage Minimums” it states as follows:
Currently the minimum in Lakeside is 12.00, in Gallery 25.00, and The View
lounge is 12.50. This Rule has been in place and enforced as it stands now for
several years and to my knowledge even prior to Craig Martin’s arrival. Please
call me or send me an email if you need further clarification on this Rule or just
wish to discuss it.
The card craze continues and Bonnie Rosen has done a great job directing much
of the card play around the Club. Canasta, Mahjong, Bridge and regular cards
continue to grow in popularity and I ask that you follow guest Rules and sign in
all guests.
Holiday season is fast approaching and we want to ensure that you and your
families enjoy all the club facilities seamlessly so please remember to get your
guest cards. Guests will not be given access to areas of the club without guest
cards in hand. We do this so that our staff can maintain a safe environment for
everyone.
D I N I N G
We had a very strong Thanksgiving holiday weekend and it was great to see so
many families once again enjoy all that St. Andrews has to offer. The Aquatic
Center was again a very popular hot spot and I hope you had a chance to meet
Julio Fuentes our manager in that area. We purchased about 30 additional
lounge chairs and several large umbrellas in preparation for a big season around
the pool. Don’t forget - Café Blue is open for lunch daily except Monday.

On to business around the Club. We have had a very good first month at
Lakeside and our daily covers are very strong. Chef Jeremy Logan and Reagan
Govender have done a fantastic job getting this very popular venue up and
running at full capacity. Culinary and front of house training continues and I am
increasingly pleased with our seasonal teams this year.

Our winter holiday week was an exciting time for families
and friends to gather together and enjoy all of the
activities here at St. Andrews Country Club. Our
Character Brunch in the St. Andrews Ballroom was a hit
with Anna, Elsa, and Olaf making the rounds and posing
for pictures with all the children.
Our Mad Hatter themed Grandmother’s tea was a delight
with tales from Alice in Wonderland told by a life-size
book worm. Everyone went home with a Mad Hatter top
hat of their own!
Teen Night was a smashing success with Michaela Paige
from The Voice singing live for our teenagers in the
Promenade Room.

S.A.W.G.A.news
Our December S.A.W.G.A. Governors’
Cup was a great competitive event with
good golf and some surprising results!
The second Rules Café was held on
December 16, providing explanations
and how-to’s in following the rules and
etiquette on the course which will be
helpful in maintaining fairness and pace
of play on our home course as well as
during “away” play.
The President’s Cup, a partnered
tournament is scheduled for January 12
and 15. Maddy Seeman, S.A.W.G.A.
Vice-Chair, is available to answer
questions relating to sign-up and format:
first round will be a nine-hole Pinehurst
and 9-hole Scramble; second round will
be Partner’s Best Ball.
Those golfers with a handicap of 36 and
under sign up by January 15 for our
Inter-club Challenge against Delaire
Country Club on January 27 and
February 3. The team roster will be
completed on a “first to sign up” basis.
Any questions? Please contact Ina Rae
Fox, Special Events Chair. S.A.W.G.A.
Team Colors: new melon logoed shirt
and navy bottoms.
Shelley Harris and her dedicated
committee are counting on all of us to
make S.A.W.G.A.’s Play for P.I.N.K.
Tournament on February 24 an even
greater success this year. We have always
had such enthusiasm and generosity in
making the event fabulous. Remember,
even if you are not golfing with us,
contact Shelley to help out; come for
lunch.
Reminder: S.A.W.G.A. Ladies’
Member-Guest will be on March 19,
2015. You need to be an S.A.W.G.A.
member with a current handicap to
play. Serena Werber and Laura
Blackman have been busy planning an
exciting day “50 Shades of Green” for
you and your guest. They and our Pro
Staff can answer any questions you
may have.

THE
TOYS4TOTS
The always popular Toys for Tots Round Robin was
played under beautiful blue skies and after two hours of
some fun, yet competitive tennis, trophies were
awarded to the top two Ladies and top two Men who
won the most games. Karen Weisfeld played some
excellent tennis to beat out Finalist Joan Hauser. On
the Men’s side, Dan Benamoz continued his strong play
to get by the always dangerous Finalist Bob Rosenberg.
Thanks to all participants for your generosity and
support for the needy children of South Florida.
Another event to report on is the 14th Annual St.
Aaron Krickstein
Director of Tennis
Andrews / Broken Sound Tennis Challenge, which was
held on home soil this year. There were fourteen
doubles matches played and somehow Broken Sound found a way to win
nine matches to five. We very much look forward to next year’s event and
hopefully we can take back the coveted cup trophy. Thanks again to all
of our members for being part of this fun interclub event.
In closing, a quick report on our three South Palm Beach County Ladies’
teams. All three teams are playing extremely well and are at the top or
near the top of their respective divisions. Keep up the great playing
Ladies! As for the Men, our three Men’s senior teams will begin play in
early January. Warren Eisenstein will once again captain two teams
(our Grand Slam League team and our Division 2 Palm Beach County
team) and Gordy Saul will captain our Division 8 Palm Beach County
senior team. Thanks guys for all your hard work and support!
Happy Holidays to everyone and of course a very happy and healthy
New Year!
See you on the Courts!

THE NEW FOOD LABEL 2015
Maureen Buchbinder
Nutrition Educator
FDA proposes a new label so we can
go to the local grocery store and pick
an item off the shelf and be able to tell
if it is good for us. The New Nutrition
Facts label will reflect scientific
information including the link
between diet and chronic diseases
like obesity and heart disease.
THE CHANGES:
CALORIES: Bold and larger type. The calories will
reflect on the amount that should be eaten.
SERVING SIZE: Bold and larger type. It will reflect the
amount people currently eat, not on what people should
be eating.
FATS: will be displayed by Total Fat, Saturated Fat, and
Trans Fat. It is more important to know the type of fats
you are consuming, versus the amount. It is highly
recommended to consume mono and poly
UNSATURATED fats. Aim for less than 8% of saturated
fat, and absolutely NO TRANS FATS (aka partially
hydrogenated oils).
CHOLESTEROL (same as before): indicates the number
of milligrams of cholesterol per serving. The ideal daily
intake is 0-300 mg. It reflects the presence of a
particular animal fat.
SODIUM (same as before): represents the amount of
sodium in each serving. Aim for less than 200 mg per
serving.
ADDED SUGAR: The added sugar is not the sugar that is
found in the food but what is added. For example, if you
purchase a Greek yogurt, it has sugar in the food label,
that is sugar that comes from lactose, the sugar found in
dairy. But some Greek yogurts have added sugar, and it
should be clearly stated. Consuming more added
sugar, will decrease the intake of nutrient rich
foods, while increasing the caloric intake.
PROTEIN (same as before): is an important number to
know how much protein you are getting.
DAILY VALUES: Will be displayed on the left, and clearly
stated. It will be revised for Sodium, Dietary fiber and
Vitamin D. It will help consumers understand the
nutrition information in the context of a total daily diet.
DUAL COLUMN: indicates both per serving and per
package calorie and nutrition information for larger
packages that could be consumed in one sitting or
multiple sittings.
VITAMIN D & POTASSIUM: Two nutrients that the US
population is not getting enough of. Vitamin D is
important for its role in bone health. Potassium is
helpful in lowering blood pressure. Vitamins A & C
would no longer be on the label.
IRON & CALCIUM: Two important nutrients for better
health. Iron carries oxygen in our blood cells. Men
need 10 mg daily and women need 18 mg daily. Calcium
helps strengthen bones and cellular metabolism.
Need 880 mg daily.
FOOTNOTE: To clearly explain the meaning of the
Percent Daily Value.
PICKLEBALL
TOTAL CARBOHYDRATES & DIETARY FIBER (same
as before): Use the calculation of Total Carbohydrates
divided by Dietary Fiber to calculate your fiber ratio.
Fiber ratio should be less than 5, the lower the
number the better.
SUGARS (same as before): Remember 4 grams = 1
teaspoon. The added sugar is what you should be
concerned with, depending on the food.
