ST. ANTHONY’S HONORED
FOR HISTORIC
PRESERVATION OF CAMPUS
Long Beach Heritage is an organization that honors the preservation of significant historical and architectural resources,
neighborhoods and the cultural heritage of
Long Beach. On February 18, one of their
prestigious Preservation Awards was presented to St. Anthony High School for the
rehabilitation of our historic 90 year old campus.
These awards were presented, ―In recognition and appreciation for outstanding
dedication in the rehabilitative renovations
toward preserving architectural history...This
outstanding work has made a historic location enjoyable for an entire community, and
made St. Anthony High School a truly integral part of our city‘s rich history.‖
Festivities took place aboard the RMS
Queen Mary with a roomful of community
members who care very deeply about historic
preservation. Several private homeowners
were also honored, along with Rancho Los
Alamitos, Rancho Los Cerritos, and Farmers
& Merchants Bank.
But by far the lengthiest script was
offered by St. Anthony‘s own Doris TopsyElvord, Class of 1949, as she presented the
award to Gina Rushing Maguire, President of
St. Anthony High School for the rehabilitation of St. Anthony High School‘s historic
campus over the last eight years. Father Jim
Halley, Associate Pastor of St. Anthony Parish, accompanied Gina to receive the award,
amidst enthusiastic audience applause and
the cheers of many alumni, parents of alumni
and friends attending.
Doris Topsy-Elvord, „49, and Gina Rushing Maguire „67
Certificates of Recognition were also
presented to St. Anthony High School in
honor of our contribution to preservation of
our historic campus from our City Council
District, the Mayor, the California Senate,
California State Assembly, the County of Los
Angeles, the California Legislature Assembly,
and the U.S. House of Representatives.

90 Years and Counting
Driving on 6th Street by St. Anthony Church on Olive Avenue in the Spring of 1920, you would
have noticed something different on the block. A new building was near completion at 620 Olive Ave., the
first and only Catholic secondary school in the growing City of Long Beach.
Sister Gabriel of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary opened wide the doors of the new
high school accepting its first students in September, 1920 with these words: “Whether we will it or not,
we cannot journey without leaving footprints and others will follow where we go because we have
marked the way.” In 1922, the high school received full, formal accreditation and in 1923, St. Anthony‘s
proudly sent forth its first graduates.
1920 to 2010 = 90 Years. This year, St. Anthony High School celebrates 90 years of service and
contribution to families in the greater Long Beach area. Throughout the decades this community has
weathered many changes and the high school has been a part of that change and growth. But throughout,
St. Anthony‘s has maintained its intrinsic character, tradition, mission and purpose. The high school is
still Catholic, still college preparatory, still diverse and still affordable. And St. Anthony‘s graduates are
still young men and women of exemplary character who demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to service and leadership.
Today, St. Anthony‘s students come from Long Beach and 28 neighboring communities in the
greater Long Beach area. These students represent diverse ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds
that are a close reflection of the demographics of the City of Long Beach. These students choose St. Anthony‘s because they value a small, values-based high school experience that balances academic rigor and
achievement with leadership development, participation and Christian service. 100% of our students
graduating last June went on to college.
But the connection to this special community does not end with graduation and college, career or
family. St. Anthony’s is known for its alumni. Alumni who remain involved and committed to their
alma mater. Alumni who continue to give back, in gratitude for the educational experience that they value
so much—the education experience that was “A Gift For Life.”
Class reunions abound each year. Alumni gatherings are both planned and spontaneous and happen
throughout the year, from Homecoming to ―Basketball on Parade‖ and the Annual Golf Tournament, which
will be held this year on June 21st at Recreation Park Golf Course. There is a saying at St. Anthony High
School: “Once a Saint, always a Saint.” Each student who enrolls in St. Anthony‘s is called to
―SAINTHOOD‖, not just for four years, but as a way of life.

New Mural Draws Attention to
Life of St. Anthony of Padua
Anyone entering St. Anthony‘s main doors on Olive Ave. these days
can‘t miss the exciting new floor-to-ceiling artwork covering the walls of
the lobby surrounding the classic statue of St. Anthony of Padua. Commissioned in December 2009 in honor of St. Anthony High School‘s 90th Anniversary Year, St. Anthony‘s Mural was created to enliven and beautify St.
Anthony‘s main entrance and to serve as a visual reminder of the life and
contribution of our beloved patron, St. Anthony of Padua.
Local artists Abner Ramirez and Christie Olmstead of ―Dreams and
Visions‖ have created an inspiring mural which tells a story about the life of
St. Anthony. It provides a means to visually honor the high school‘s founders and those who have contributed significantly to the school throughout
our 90 year history. The Mural will recognize major donors, Hall of Fame
members, and our founders on stones and bricks at its base. Opportunities
will be available for new donors to be a part of St. Anthony‘s Mural as well,
by reserving a brick or stone imprinted with their names.
Even though decades of graduates honor the name of St. Anthony of
Padua as the high school‘s Patron, most of us have very sketchy knowledge
of this saint who was named a Doctor of the Church. Born in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal, Anthony‘s wealthy family wanted him to be a great nobleman, but for the sake of Christ he chose a life of service as a poor Franciscan priest. Anthony preferred the life of a hermit and lived in a cave for
some years, leaving only to attend Mass and sweep the floors of the nearby
monastery.
But one day when a scheduled speaker failed to appear for an important gathering, Anthony was asked to present a reflection to the learned
group. Everyone was surprised to discover that Anthony was a gifted
speaker who had unsuspected knowledge and the ability to explain Sacred
Scripture in simple and inspiring language that people could understand.
From that day forward, Anthony was pressed into service, traveling
as an evangelical speaker around the countryside, preaching and teaching to
all who would listen. Stories tell that he would use whatever means were at
hand to reach his audience with his message—even climbing into trees to be
better seen and heard in the countryside. His simple humility and apostolic These four photos are of works in
progress—not nearly finished.
zeal attracted and inspired crowds of people wherever he went and his reputation spread.
Anthony spent his last years preaching in the area around Padua, Italy, where he died on June 13,
1231, at the age of 36. He is known as ―A Saint for the Whole World‖, for a universal Church. St. Anthony
is best known as the patron saint to call on for helping find lost objects. The reason for this is that he is said
to have, ―become lost in the vision and ideals of St. Francis of Assisi, for it was only then that he found himself.‖
St. Anthony is pictured in our Mural preaching—perched on a branch of a walnut tree set in the Italian countryside. Other scenes of the Mural depict the town of Assisi and the monastery there, as well as Padua.
The life of St. Anthony of Padua is inspiring in so many ways, but the special message for our students and for each of us in our lives is that God often calls us to do things that we don‘t want to do. Anthony
preferred to live the life of a hermit, serving others. But he was called to do more. He was called to use the
gifts God had given him and to live a public life as a preacher and teacher, carrying the Good News of the
Gospel. He took a chance, he went out on a limb, as he listened to God‘s voice and responded to his call.

Cocktail Party A Success!
Karen Eckholt, Kerry Eckholt, Pam Pierce, Kathy Schuck
Every year the classes of the ‗60s meet for
a cocktail party get-together. This year‘s Cocktail
Party at the GasLamp restaurant/lounge in Long
Beach was held on September 12, 2009 and it was
great fun! Many new faces this year brought several classes together. The classes ranged from
1959 to 1964. We hope you‘ll all consider coming out for this event next September. You can

Senior Prom
50th Reunion for Class of ‘59
The Senior Prom took on a whole new
meaning this time around. On April 4, 2009, the
Class of 1959 held its 50th Reunion at The Centre
at Sycamore Plaza, just down the street from our
own SA football field. It was extremely well attended and the dance floor was jumping all night
with music provided by DJ Tom Corcoran, Class
of 1960. The reunion committee girls were really
into the occasion and wore rhinestone tiaras and
wrist corsages. Senior Prom attendees wore everything from beautiful gowns to casual slacks.
There was a ―mini-museum‖ table filled with
memorabilia from the ‗50s. The evening began
with an ―ice-breaker‖ game involving a bell ringing as ―students‖ rushed from ―classroom to classroom‖ to have their schedules signed. This was a
weekend event; on Friday there was a golf game
at Big Rec and drinks on the patio after. Faces
were sore from grinning as classmates hugged and
kissed when they saw each other.
Sunday found us at Mass at St. Anthony‘s
followed by coffee and doughnuts on campus and
a wonderful tour of the school, led by Gina Rushing Maguire, President of SA.

63rd-Year Reunion—October 13-15, 2010
It’s the Place to Be—Reunion Sixty-Three!
Dear Class of ‗47 Friends,
To those of you who have been attending our recent reunions: you know they‘re great. What has
made them great? It‘s you! And you, and you, and you. We look forward to seeing all of you again.
What‘s better than seeing old friends? And having a ball while doing it? You know Palm Desert‘s great.
Reunion are great. ‗Nuff said. Come on—we‘re doing it again.
To those of you we‘ve missed at recent reunions: you‘ve been missing out, too. It‘s been a long
time since 1947. Still, life is short. Let‘s make the most of it. See old friends, revive old memories and
friendships. We‘ll also have an opportunity to pray for our departed classmates at a special memorial
Mass. We want to see you, whether you live in Maryland or Colorado or Southern Cal, whether you‘re
still in good health or not. Come if you can. It will revive your spirits. It will reactivate your old schoolmates, too! We guarantee it—the SAHS 1947 reunion is the place to be.
As before the reunion will take place at the Inn at Deep Canyon in Palm Desert, CA. The dates
are October 13-15, 2010 (departure 10/16/10). We‘ll have a hospitality hour at 5:00 on the first evening,
followed by a buffet dinner, both right at the Inn. Dinner at a fine local restaurant will be provided on the
following evening. Dinner on the final evening will be at your own choice. The Inn at Deep Canyon provides a continental breakfast each morning. Refreshments will be available throughout each day. The
cost of the two dinners and refreshments is covered by the reunion fee of $90 per person. The Inn at
Deep Canyon is offering us a special rate of $186 (plus tax) per double room for all three nights (to be
paid separately).
Don‘t miss out. Decide now to sign up and send in your payment along with the sign-up form
below. Do it now, or at least by June 1st, please. Separately, call the Inn at Deep Canyon (800-2530004) and reserve a room. Tell them it‘s for the St. Anthony‘s reunion.
Any of your friends from other St. Anthony‘s classes are also welcome. Invite them along.
They‘ll enjoy it. Questions? Call Katie Mulligan Campion at 562-429-5427. We look forward to seeing
you in October.

ST. ANTHONY HIGH SCHOOL
CLASS OF ‘49 REUNION
Monsignor Dolan, Father O‘Callahan, Brother Dunstan, Brother
Adrian, Sister Leonella, and Sister Julia head a list of memorable adults who obliges us in life-changing
ways. Our classroom teachers were Brothers of the Holy Cross and Immaculate Heart nuns.
It was the best of times. We were a class of one hundred girls and eighty boys. The marvelous
and sometimes miraculous John Olszewski and B.I. Mais led a football team of extraordinary talent to a
CIF Championship in the Los Angeles Coliseum. Doris Topsy-Elvord, the perennial All-League and All
Tournament player, led the girls basketball team to continuous honors.
In our freshman year the basketball program was staged in the armory building adjacent to campus. The boys‘ locker room was in the basement of the boys classroom building. During our sophomore
year, much to our delight, the new gymnasium was opened.
It is no wonder that the Class of ‗49 has chosen to assemble five times since their graduation. On
the recent occasion of their 60th Reunion, they gathered at the Old Ranch Country Club. Forty-seven
SAINTS were in attendance with their spouses. The party opened with a prayer for our sixty-two deceased classmates—all who were all probably leading a cheer from heaven. (Aren‘t all Saints in
heaven?)
S-S—s, a, i - N—N– n, t, s - S-A-I—N-T S,
G-o-o-o SAINTS!!
Presentations were made to those who had traveled the greatest distance to join the reunion:
Marian Harrington (New York) and Elaine Nippolt who drove sixteen hours each way, solo, from Idaho.
Jack and Neva Senske easily led their category with twenty-six grandchildren.
Special guests for the evening were Gina Maguire (Class of ‘67) and her husband. Gina is President of St. Anthony High School and the talented leader of the movement that has rescued the high
school from closure.
There were judges, authors, attorneys, nurses, educators, and priests. It was, truly, the best of
times!

Class of 1924
Theresa Wuytens will be 102 years old on her next
birthday! Theresa was a member of the first graduating
class of St. Anthony‘s, along with the seven other girls and
one boy. She can recite the names of some of the Nuns
who taught her at SA and can describe the school building
and her classrooms. She is such a delight to talk with as
she recounts what Long Beach and St. Anthony‘s was like
in the 1920s. One of her dear friends is 104 years old.
Amazing!!
This very lovely lady now lives in Leisure World
in Seal Beach, CA, next door to Jack Senske, SA 1949,
shown with her in the above photo.

COMMUNITY LEADERS SUPPORT ST. ANTHONY’S
APPRECIATION EVENT HOSTED FOR
FACULTY AND STAFF
ADVISORY COUNCIL WELCOMES
NEW MEMBERS
In December the Foundation and Advisory Council co-sponsored a successful Christmas party for the faculty and staff, providing
everyone with a better understanding of the
role that each plays in the continued success of
the school.
St. Anthony High School‘s Advisory Council recently welcomed two new members, Annette
Hough and Ginger Shattuck, to the board which is
made up of 15 community leaders and business persons who share their expertise with our school.
Welcome to new members of the
Foundation Board: Jim Supancheck, ‗62, a
former facilities manager for the school who
has spent many years working for Fluor Corp.
and will add his expertise to our board; John
Wavell, ‗53, has joined us and will spearhead
the efforts to develop new supporters in our
quest for funding. Their talents and willingness to help school growth are greatly appreciated. The Foundation still needs a finance/
accounting person.
Annette Hough is a 1969 graduate of St.
Paul‘s High School who most recently served as the
Budget Manager for the City of Long Beach. Annette also has experience in city government as a
Risk Manager and budget consultant and headed up
administration for the Long Beach Fire Department.
Ginger Shattuck (Virginia Cooper, SAHS
Class of 1958) is recently retired as Superintendent
of the Norwalk-LaMirada Unified School District
where she served for 45 years as a teacher, principal,
assistant superintendent and deputy superintendent
before her appointment as Superintendent in 1994.
The role of SAHS Advisory Council is to
assist the school community in its essential goal of
educating young people and passing on the Catholic
faith and its traditions to its students. The Advisory
Council members share their experience and expertise, providing administrative and financial counsel
to school administrators and assisting in the development and implementation of strategies which help
assure the successful permanent operation of the
school.
I would like to thank Lou Cassani for
his five years of service to our board. Lou
provided an important link to the St. Anthony
parish and helped us with our dealings with

SAINTS ALIVE!—Indeed we are still
―Saints Alive‖ and still filled with love and enthusiasm for our high school. Saints Alive will be
published quarterly and will cover events and people from all past classes, starting with the first
graduating class in 1920.
Let us know if your class is planning a reunion; let us know if you have gotten together
with old classmates (pictures very welcome); let
us know about your families—we all want to
know about your careers, retirements, marriages,
kids, grandkids, pets, activities, and hobbies. Send
us your news—this is YOUR newspaper!
Are you the owner of an independent business? Let us know about it, even if you send us
only a business card. In these difficult times it is
even more important to support independent businesses—and what better way than to support SA
Alumni businesses.
