The leading idea with the project, “Interregional Entrepreneur Co-operation in Design and
Prototype manufacturing of Wooden Products” (ECOW), was to create commercial opportunities for a long-term business exchange to develop existing and new entrepreneurs in the
regions Övre Norrland in Sweden, Lorraine in France, Wielkopolska in Poland and Lombardy
in Italy. The development would be stimulated by arrangements of direct contacts and
exchanges between entrepreneurs in a demarcate business area in the partner’s regions.
ECOW’s main objective was to establish both regional and interregional co-operation between
enterprises in design and prototype manufacturing in the wood processing area in order to
create good basis for the regions’ development.
The project wanted to stimulate interregional business contacts and exchange between the
partner regions through establishing regional partnerships in Övre Norrland, Lorraine,
Wielkopolska and Lombardy. These partnerships would be a co-operation between enterprises, universities and organizations with competence in design or with interests in business- or
product co-operation in wood processing.
The project’s continuous work consisted in the following main stages and activities:
Mapping and identification of the entrepreneurs’ real demands of co-operation and matching
of the demands against the entrepreneurs in the other partnerships.
Arrangements of workshops, regional study visits and seminars in design and prototype
manufacturing. Interchange of competence and experience in design in the interregional
partnership. Further stages were planned, but they could not be implemented
for the lack of time.

There are many ways of building a common European home: somebody trusts politics,
somebody the markets, somebody business. We have tried to realize our dream of European
unity in a practical way:
14 companies from 4 different European countries, France, Sweden, Poland and Italy, with
the assistance of an international team of designers, have tried to find out common languages
and dwelling schemes, which could integrate the usage of wood and its by-products into
rational and environment-friendly objects.
Our projects have been developed in a period of eight months by means of four design
workshops, in which the managers of the companies had to face the designers’ ideas.
Some of the drawings shown in this book are still under consideration while some others
have been developed and are already on the market. Anyhow we have tried to stick to our
starting point: to find a common ground even if every proposal was different and unique.
Our dialogue has been carried out through our shared knowledge of wood, which is anyway
based on different techniques in every region.
In conclusion, it has been a valid planning experiment, but also and especially a very fruitful
experience of discovering, meeting and appreciating human beings.

The Home
Every existing person keeps on dwelling somewhere.
We have to plan our days and our nights inside those huge necessary objects that are called
homes, where we have to place activities, wishes, memories, tools, gestures.
That is why furniture exists, being a sort of intimate mind condition, essential to our
being inhabitants.
Homes are places where delights and nightmares coexist, they are tools of joy and pain,
and in a word they are a mirage for every existing person.
An ideal home is a dwelling status which is never going to end, which is always the same
but always different.
Instead of being a synthesis, a home is an adding process, a theatre, a mosaic, a suspended
sequence, full of expectations.
But usually we own just one home, mostly tiny. Therefore furnishings, on the contrary, must
consist in many ideas, in many different fragments and situations. And not only walls, floors
or lamps are kept changing but even every object in our homes can have its own style, for
example medieval, modern, neoclassical, pop, country, Indian...
Once sameness was in use, now diversity is in force: two different ways of conceiving life.
But actually, beside his own real and concrete house, everybody has a mental dwelling,
which is much more articulated, fruit of other owned or dreamt about homes, belonging to
your father or to a friend or to a girlfriend, or where you lived on holiday or
when you were ill...
This fact is due to the need of personality versus anonymity of serial production, to the wish
of identity versus the greyness of functionalism. Furniture becomes the theatre of private life,
scenery, resulting from a great number of pictures and memories, where everything is meant
to create a “stage-home”.

Wooden modular house
Design by Integral Studio Vinaccia
The house has been designed taking inspiration from a boat-like structure, which can expand
according to customer’s needs. Ordinates are made by curved multistrata wood, supporting
different kinds of covering panels: glass, wooden tiles, solar absorbers, etc.
In the inferior part of the house a technical space, containing pipes,
hydraulic and electrical systems, is foreseen.

IUC NORRBOTTEN AB
The main goal of this project was from the beginning not
only to learn design from each other. We should also work
together with technical, logistical and production development. After the second steering meeting in Kalix and the
first seminar in Milan at the Naba University, the project
moved in a different direction.
Mr Vinaccia, the chief designer from NABA, held a speech
in Milan. He talked about the European house and what he
wanted from the entrepreneurs. That became like a shock
for everyone and it was not expected.
Anyway, after a while and after a lot of discussions
between the project leaders and the entrepreneurs we
could go through with the seminar in a direction which
was acceptable for all participants.
During the ECOW project and between the seminars there
have been a lot of contacts between designers and entrepreneurs. As a project leader, I have tried to concentrate
myself to unite the different opinions from the four countries so we could find a decent way to work together.
I haven’t succeed with that for 100 % but I am still satisfied what we have done together. We all must know that

we are four different countries with four different cultures
to have respect for. Unfortunately, we couldn’t manage to
go to the fair in Milan with a common exhibition. My opinion is that the project time is to short for that. The entrepreneurs could not find the time to make their prototypes.
Let’s hope that we can make an ECOW part two together
because we have a lot of work left to do and I believe that
we could manage to make real business between our countries if we get the opportunity to continue with the project.
IUC Norrbotten AB is a regional development company for
small and medium-sized companies in the areas of manufacturing, wood products, electronics/IT and emerging industries.
Its primary mission is to create economic development within
the economy of the County of Norrbotten. Focus is on growth
within the region’s suppliers for the basic industry, manufacturing companies and businesses operated by entrepreneurs.
IUC aims at carrying out business cooperative projects that
foster growth and build networks from concrete business
opportunities and at acting as sounding board and support to
our entrepreneurs by being both a resource broker of competencies and capital, together with all “business friends”.

Children’s door
Design by: Giulio Vinaccia with Integral SV
With this manufacturer we have explored new possibilities of
interpreting inner doors. We have developed not only new
decorative concepts, but also functional elements which
become doors. The children door shown here has in itself a
folding structure that can be transformed into a toy house.
This project changes the traditional features of the door market with colours and pictures.

The Artika Chair
Design by: Philippe Casens & Leif Sandström
Leif Sandstrom propose to me to redesign prototypes he has
realized for his home: a table for breakfast in wood (with an
interesting solution for the legs using thin stripes of wood)
and Erik and Erika are chairs in massive oak wood.
The result after some month is a table which incorporates an
very thin heating film (PTF Polymer Thick Film technology)
placed in between the wooden plate and a diffuser in galls or
ceramics, where to put hot food and drinks keeping them
warm. The chair Erika representes a spread typology in
Sweden. massive wood, huge sections, heaviness both physically and aesthetically. I explain to Leif that chairs are in Italy
also mobile (traditionally you can bring them from your home
to the Plazza. We decide to reduce the sections where it’s
possible, trying to create dynamic lines but still remaining in
a traditional look. The seat might be then filled with memory
form PU foam and upholstered with Reindeer fur, typical of
Norbotten area.

Decorated Door
Design by: Giulio Vinaccia with Integral SV
With this project we have meant to explore the decorative
possibilities of doors. In modern architecture entrance halls
do not exist anymore and from the outside there is a direct
access to the inner part of the house. Therefore why not convert entrance doors in something decorative and joyful that
on the outside shows the dweller’s personality and on the
inside contributes to decorating the home?
Decorations have been developed from traditional folk elements of Luleå region, interpreted in a contemporary way.
We at Polardörren invest a lot of time and energy in
development. Our vision, through flexibility and creativity, is
to adapt the door to the customer, and to manufacture doors
with built-in intelligence – including a unique partnership
with the Falck Security company. Something that we have
also thought of is the door’s insulating qualities.
People with experience say that it is in cold
regions, where we Northerners live, that
the best expertise for doors can
be found – which we have
adopted as our point
of departure.

Children’s Library
Design by: Angela Lopez with Henrik Runshaug
With this project we have developed a version for children of
a set of library furniture. We have made an island with three
different locations, to give a greater stimulus to young
readers’ creativity.
The whole project has been implemented in a common
functional structure, furnished with MDF decorative panels.
SSC LINDVALLS can combine the capability and flexibility of
a joinery with a very rational and competitive production.
The combination has meant that SSC Lindvalls has
expanded greatly in recent years. It’s a question of delivering
to libraries, hotels, offices and other projects with special
demands on interior and storage, counters and special
joinery, but where size calls on cost-efficient
production and handling.

At the beginning, thrown into the field of industrial production and of business from the area of cultural promotion I
had been always dealing with, I felt a little bit confused.
I did not really understand a sort of caution or even suspicion that I felt in the fellow partners and especially in the
entrepreneurs from any country.I thought that the project
ECOW was a great opportunity for everybody for exchanging
views, experience, and knowledge. I always had met with
an enthusiastic reaction when I had tried to put together
artists, writers, actors, musicians from all around the world.
After a short time I understood that there is a big difference
between the world of culture and the world of business:
when you deal with culture you do not put very much at
stake, mostly your time and your ideas, your creativity. The
more you experiment the more you do your job. But in business you have to take in serious account every move,
because you are risking money and not only your own but
also your partners’.After I had realized this difference, everything became easier and also my past experience (diplomacy, patience and understanding of different approaches)
turned out to be very useful.
Now I feel enriched by my work in ECOW.

Design by: Maria Gallo, Carlo Sangalli,
Giampietro Mazzola
This Kitchen Totem is a project that tests new operative terms
for one of the most complex spaces of a house. It deals not
only with a single block but also with an operative island that
can be used by several persons. The wash-basin and the
cooker are placed in the front of the Totem and this allows
collective food preparation, as requested by nowadays families in which the roles of the members are very flexible.

Bath
Design by: Philippe Casens with Stefan Krivokapic
Conceived as a system to replace the traditional way of realizing bathroom, Bath3 concentrates all the necessary functions
of a bath room usually placed in the wall partitions. It is
composed by autonomous modules to fix at the wall or to
aggregate in island. Modules are “plug-in” panels, ready to
use with complete plumbery and electrical fittings, divided by
functions: shower, basin, tub, and panels fully equipped with
shelves or small containers. Developed in conjunction with
sadema a company producing bathroom cabinet in Tuscany
and ecodialogando a company promoting eco compatible in
building and furniture field. The project is based on the use of
wood, as a structural component (equipped frames) and as a
surface in contact with water using plywood panels treated
ecological waterproof varnish
ECODIALOGANDO was established in 1995 with the aim of
supporting companies engaged in low environmental impact
productions in the sector of building, furnishing and interior

Our experience from this project is that we have learnt very
much about wood processing in different regions of Europe,
especially in Sweden, Italy and France. We have also organized a group of companies in Poland, which are directly or
indirectly interested in taking part in the project. This is the
second result: we have prepared a map of wood processing
companies in Wielkopolska. We have presented this document to our regional authorities. A further achievement from
the contacts with Italian and French companies is that we are
now more focused on using design in the production and I
think that we have succeded in persuading our companies of
the importance of this concept in developing the products, in
organizing the work and in preparing the promotional campaigns. Last but not least, our agency has achieved more
knowledge on wood processing, on companies active in this
branch and also on institutions present in Wielkopolska. And
this is a further competence, a new identification mark for
our agency in the future.

Hotel Room
Design by: Giulio Vinaccia, Maria Gallo
We have chosen to develop a fitting structure to offer different
possibilities of furnishing a hotel room. It deals with panels
that can be LCD television sets, decorative elements or lighting surfaces. Therefore we have suggested three different
“glocal” solutions, working on Polish traditional craft features
(ethnic room), on Polish musical identity (music room) and
on the “romantic” accents of Polish culture (lovers’ room).
The project entailed also the development of textiles and
blankets, which are necessary for a perfect balance
of the system.

The CRITT bois is a center of resources for wood industries in
Lorraine and as such wished to participate in the ECOW project to allow the regional manufacturers to benefit from
crossed experience feedbacks of the other European partners.
The mobilization of the manufacturers was important, more
than 12 companies globally participated in the project ECOW,
between the visits in Lorraine, the foreign meetings and the
workshops at the partners place.
Besides the development of innovative “design” projects, realized by 2 companies, the meetings were the occasion to start
partnerships between European companies.
Some concrete examples of partnerships were furniture manufacturers’ interest for the regional tendencies, wooden houses manufacturers’ participation and strong interest for techniques used in Sweden and Poland, exchange of technologies (techniques of manufacturing, techniques of pose, components) between various manufacturers, notably on the outside joinery and finally partnerships sketched with Swedish
IUC Nordbotten, but also RDA Konin and the Polish technical
center of wood.
At the end of the project ECOW, we note the deep interest of
