Zimbabwe. . . A phoenix rises
ABOUT ZIMBABWE
Zimbabwe, slightly larger than Montana in area, is a landlocked country located in southern Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. It is
bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest and Mozambique to the east. The capital is Harare.
During the years of unrest, travelers limited their Zim trips to Victoria Falls. Over the last few years as the political situation has stabilized, the word
has gotten out that Zimbabwe is back, and that it is a bargain. With safari prices at about 1/2 of what they would cost in neighboring Botswana and
South Africa, Zimbabwe has all the same wildlife and fantastic safari infrastructure at a fraction of the price.
There are many other elements to Zimbabwe beside the Falls and the wildlife at Hwange and Mana Pools – stunning scenery at Lake Kariba,
fascinating Bushman rock art at Matobo NP, and cultural visits to schools and villages throughout Zim. It’s a great destination and we welcome it back.
WEATHER/WHEN TO GO:
LANGUAGE AND PEOPLE
Zimbabwe’s generally high altitudes produce a beautiful and moderate
climate, meaning higher temperatures from November to April (summer)
and lower temperatures from May to October (winter). Temperatures
are never very extreme . The warm, wet season - November to May provides the year’s rain. Days are sunny with dramatic afternoon/evening
thunderstorms. The end of the cool, dry season, around September/
October, is the top time for wildlife viewing.
The official language of Zimbabwe is English, which was inherited from
colonial rule. Shona, Sindebele and English are the principal spoken
languages of Zimbabwe.
CURRENCY
The USD is the official currency of Zimbabwe. Old notes are often not
accepted; better to bring the newer “big head” notes issued after 2006
(your bank will know).
To see the Falls, travelers should optimally go March – September. These
are generally the months where the flow is enough to cover the entire MEDICATIONS
width of the Falls, but not too high that mist obscures views by mist
Malaria meds are always optional, but malaria is present in some parts of
