Mark Loewe has led a nomadic life from a standardbred trainer to the manager of horse tracks of all breeds ?
even a greyhound track ? but now feels at home as the vice-president of Ohio racing operations for Penn
National Gaming overseeing thoroughbred?s Mahoning Valley and harness racing?s Dayton Raceway.

?Hey Mark, what, no jai-alai frontons, inventorying cestas
and pelotas??
?No, never worked one,?said Loewe. ?But I?ve been to one.?
Of course he has. Loewe, one of the busiest managers in
racing, perhaps even a lone wolf in the wagering world, has
worked with pacers and trotters, thoroughbreds, quarter
horses, even greyhounds and the electrical rabbits they
chase.
But it?s his current position as vice-president of Ohio racing
operations for Penn National Gaming that makes Loewe one
of the most unique front office officials in North America.

THE TIME IS NOW
TO BREED IN NJ!
With North Jersey casinos on the horizon, New Jersey anticipates
substantial purse increases.
“This is historic”

highest purses in the country again.”

While there is no
documentation,
Loewe is believed to
be the only
horse-racing operator
to currently be calling
the shots at separate
thoroughbred and
harness tracks at the
same time. Two tracks,
two breeds.
Loewe, 58, runs the
75-day harness
meeting at Dayton
Mark Hall - USTA
Raceway as well as
M ark Loew e
the 100-day
thoroughbred stand
at Mahoning Valley Race Course in Austintown, OH, a suburb
of Youngstown. The tracks are 234 miles apart.
There are days when Loewe is actually in both places at
the same time. Well, almost at the same time.
?I?ll leave Mahoning Valley around 3 p.m. and while I don?t
make the daily double at Dayton, I?ll make part of the card,?
he said.
In addition to quarterbacking the two tracks, Loewe also
travels to Columbus for the monthly meetings of the Ohio
State Racing Commission.
?I can handle two tracks at once, and the Commission
meetings, because I have good teams in both locations,?said
Loewe.
Too busy to exhale? Not really. These days, his schedule is
actually a reduction of duty compared to just two years ago.
Back in 2014, Loewe was wearing hard hats and a couple of
soft caps, one for thinking, the other for tipping farewell.
While he was overseeing the construction of Dayton
Raceway and Mahoning Valley, Loewe was also in charge of
the fading race programs at Raceway Park in Toledo, which
was replaced by the Dayton track, and Beulah Park in the
Columbus suburb of Grove City, which eventually made way
for the Youngstown area track.
?At one point, I was managing live racing at two tracks and

two piles of dirt that would become racetracks,?said Loewe.
?I was living in Columbus, which put me in the center of all
the activity.?
By the end of 2014, Beulah (in May) and Raceway Park
(June) closed so Dayton (Oct. 3) and Mahoning Valley (Nov.
24) could open and Loewe could begin his
standardbred-thoroughbred juggling act.
thought he was good, but not that good.?
That good was winning the 1992 Little Brown Jug by a
nose over super pacer Western Hanover in a dramatic raceoff.
Fake Left?s brave effort denied his rival the Pacing Triple
Crown.
?I guess you could say I got stupid at the wrong time,?said
Loewe.
As for dealing with two different breeds of owners and
trainers, Loewe doesn?t see much of a difference.
Nonetheless, Loewe had put down his condition sheets and
picked up a microphone.
?I?m not racing, but horsemen are horsemen,?he said. ?I
don?t find it hard to deal with them. And I see many
similarities in thoroughbred and harness horsemen. ?
?My first job was as the TV handicapper at Pompano Park. I
did it for a few years and then worked my way up, going from
the simulcast department to the race office to assistant
racing secretary to racing secretary, to director of racing.?
Loewe?s roots are in harness racing, but from the backside,
not the frontside.
As a teenager, his love for the sport had him taking subway
lines, buses and trains from his Manhattan home to groom
horses at Yonkers and Roosevelt Raceway, but he fulfilled his
promise to his parents to get a college education.
?I graduated from St. John?s University in 1978 with a
degree in government and politics,?said Loewe. ?Still, I
wanted to be at the track.?
After 13 years at the Florida track, Loewe took a short
detour, putting together a sale for Hanover Shoe Farm in
Pennsylvania.
But he was back in racetrack management in early 2005 as
the racing operations manager at Prairie Meadows, an Iowa
facility that was a triple threat for horseplayers.
?It was a unique situation,?said Loewe. ?We had
thoroughbreds, quarter horses and harness racing. The
So in the early 1980?s he launched a career as a driver and
a trainer. Among his clients was George Steinbrenner, the
late owner of the New York Yankees, whom he trained for in
the mid 1980?s.
?We had a great relationship. I lasted longer with George
than Billy Martin,?said Loewe, referring to the fiery Yankee
manager who was hired and fired five times by Steinbrenner.
Loewe trained his share of good horses, including
Threefold and Goalie Jeff, but it?s the one who got away at
the end of his backstretch career in 1991 that sometimes
haunts him.
?I decided to try racing from the frontside and a couple of
factors went into my decision,?said Loewe. ?My wife and I
were starting a family and the constant travel from track to
track was getting to me. Plus, I didn?t like the direction that
racing and medication were going. I wasn?t going to win
races that way.?
One of the horses that he turned over was a pacer with a
big knee who had moderate success (five wins in 14 races) as
a two-year-old. His name was Fake Left.
?We got him for $20,000 because he had run into a fence
post and hit his right knee,?said Loewe. ?I broke him and

thoroughbreds and quarters shared the same racing surface,
but we had to turn it over for the harness horses and it was a
mile track.?
?I?m in the right state, now,?said Loewe. ?My only goal is to
keep it growing and going strong.?
Loewe recognized a good opportunity when he saw one
and left Prairie Meadows in 2007 to spend some quality time
with man?s best friend as the general manger of the Sanford
Orlando Kennel Club in Florida.
?It was a chance to join a big company,?he said. ?Penn
Gaming had recently purchased the greyhound track. It was
my first job as a general manager. I was there for
two-and-a-half years.?
In the fall of 2010, Loewe headed for Penn Gaming?s
foundation track ? Penn National Race Course ? where he
spent two years as the track?s vice-president of racing
operations.
His work at the track at the foot of the Blue Mountain
range helped prepare him for the racetrack management
challenge of a lifetime ? two tracks and those two piles of
dirt that would become Ohio?s newest racetracks.

an ?industry project?is solely track specific or is really an
industry initiative that has measurable value to the game.?
Co-mingled betting pools with Europe will be a more
regular occurrence at Yonkers in the next three years
? JF: Even money. ?Hopefully starting in May 2016 unless we
hit a bump in the road.?
This week, the president of the Standardbred Owners
Association of New York predicts the future of the sport.
Handicap the chances the following will occur:
Betting on the sport in the state of New York will increase
in each of the next three years ? JF: 5-1 ?because of
increased competition from sports gaming contests.?
You and Jeff Gural will join forces and pool resources on a
major industry-wide marketing initiative in the next three
years ? JF: 100-1 ?Jeff said that we don?t share the same
vision for the sport.?
You and Jeff Gural will join forces on any industry project in
the next three years ? JF: 5-1 ?It depends if the definition of
In the next three years, harness tracks in New York,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware will work together to
coordinate schedules to address declining horse numbers
and help fill races in all jurisdictions
? JF: 30-1 ?as that would involve too much of a constriction
of racing opportunities (dates) that would have a long-term
greater negative economic impact on the owners in the
sport. It would also require track owners to give up
advantages they now enjoy after years of being ignored,
made to feel insignificant as the step children of those who
used to enjoy those privileges? Everyone at times is short of
horses but we all make do.?
A number of big-name trainers will be handed major fines
and suspensions this year over the alleged Glaucine
positives in New York ? JF: 3-1 ?Unfortunately, the trainer?s
responsibility rule which I argued against in the Federal
Court system up to the U.S. Supreme Court while construing

the rule as a rebuttal presumption also has a catch all that a
trainer in these cases has a ?duty to guard and protect the
horse from the administration?of any foreign substances.
Some defined specifically and some generically whose
administration within certain time periods is prohibited with
outer limits of seven days. Many of these trainers are well
known and respected, one I have personally used in the past.
I'm sorry to say they will face the same fate as others. The
process is the same for all of us. I have dealt with this NY lab
and its predecessor in the past and it is difficult to fight the
pharmacologist who has been at this for years. This does not
for a moment mean that this Class ll drug has been
intentionally administered by anyone, but it raises the
question of a per se violation of the trainer?s responsibility
rule. I don't think these very respected trainers are any
different than most other trainers who are, and have all,
participated under the same responsibility rule. These rules
of conduct are followed by the regulators as that is their own
mandate in order to protect every participant and those
bettors we still have in the game. Fortunately for the game
there are a very high number of samples tested in the U.S.
with a very low incidence of reported positives as per the
ARCI.?
More trainers than those announced this week will test
positive this year for allegedly high levels of Cobalt and be
handed major fines and suspensions by the state of New York
? JF: 4-1 ?Cobalt is problematic from a diagnostic point of
view and its pharmacological effect is still subject to debate
as is it excretion time from a horse's system.?
In the next 10 years, Yonkers will expand the size of its
half-mile track to a five-eighths or larger ? JF: 1,000-1
?When the VLTs first came to YR, the horsemen offered to
pay for a conversion to a 5/ 8ths. The ?no way?response was
accompanied by the statement that our horsemen would race
over a postage stamp for the money we would eventually
race for.?(Setting The Odds Longshot)
The USTA will make a substantial reduction in its number
of directors in the next five years ? JF: 15-1 ?It has been
studied in the past and the only change that has occurred is
due to the unfortunate downsizing of racing venues.?
The USTA will still be funding social media beyond 2017
? JF: 3-1 ?With some increased oversight or with some other
vendor, but it will go forward. Continued monitoring and
oversight is necessary. Just throwing more money at a
problem is not solving it.?

The SOA of New York will supply additional funding to the
USTA?s social media campaign in the next three years
? JF: 30-1 ?The SOA of NY does our own work where we can
realize results. If efforts are track specific, or do not show
benefit industry wide, the SOA will not commit funds.?
racing will supposedly share if this should pass.?
The USTA will still be supporting the cost of getting major
harness racing events televised beyond 2017
? JF: 3-1 ?TV according to many is not beneficial in this
technology age but I believe in limited support of the TV
effort. A few years ago, when the USTA leaders were subject
to unfair criticism for their decision to study the specific TV
issue before committing funding in excess of what is done
now, that was unfortunate even for the advocates of the then
inflated plan. Undermining dedicated leadership with
uninformed but well meaning membership outrage leads to
reactionary decision making without thoughtful
consideration.?
A major casino will open in Manhattan in the next five
years ? JF: 100-1 ?Heard all those discussions sometime
before. We'll have to wait for pigs to fly.?
You will become president of the USTA in the next 10
years ? JF: 10-1 ?If I was to be a candidate and was elected I
would bust my butt. I am devoted to the game and beholden
to no one. As SOA president I am very used to serving for
years without pay and while that is the same as the USTA, in
my case, that may be that it is a measure of real value.?
A casino will open at the Meadowlands by 2019
? JF: 8-1 ?There are many suitors for a slice of that pie and
The Meadowlands choice of Hard Rock as a partner in an
effort to gain some inside track has backfired.?
Takeout on wagering at tracks in New York will be lowered
on most bets from the current level ? JF: 100-1 ?Lowering
takeout needs much higher wagering to compensate for lost
revenue. Also, tracks are more inclined to take signal at
higher rates as they make more money on those imported
signal. Sounds good plays out bad. Double whammy.?
You will own a major stakes winning-horse in the next five
years ? JF: 25-1 ?Maybe Schnittker or someone like him can
save me there. Otherwise, I rely on the horsemen's wisdom
?even a blind squirrel can find an acorn.?Maybe.?
In the next five years, New York will allow shipped semen
? JF: 30-1 ?NYS sees an economic benefit to its agriculture
industry by maintaining this prohibition for its eligibility to
its Sire Stakes program and resident mares incentive. While
NY dedicates 10 per cent from VLTs to racing and breeding
they can and will continue with this.?
The New York Sires Stakes program will still have the
highest total purses in the sport five years from now
? JF: 5-1 ?Competition and reorganization of formula
distribution of available funds by other jurisdictions which
become healthy with racino/ casinos can become more
aggressive and have the power to be more competitive. NYS
may not be the leader, but we will be a real player for sure.?
Horse racing will still ? for the most part ? have the
support of politicians in New York five years from now
? JF: 3-1 ?There are thousands upon thousands of jobs in
the most labor intensive industry in NYS. Its agriculture,
farming and breeding components are far too important to
the economic engine in NYS.?
Citizens of New Jersey will pass the 2016 constitutional
amendment to allow casinos in the north of the state
? JF: 4-1 ?Over the past decades, only two referenda on NJ
have been defeated. The only thing that may make a
difference is the war between viewed economic views of the
north and the south. I am interested in the participation that

I had similar thoughts this week ? minus the knucklehead
part ? learning trainer Blair Burgess was not elected to the
Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. What were the voters
thinking?
This is not a knock on the man the voters did pick in the
driver/trainer category. Quebec legend Yves Filion is a fine
choice (see Paul Delean?s lead story in Friday?s edition of
HRU for his credentials). Filion is definitely worthy of serious
consideration as evidenced by the fact he?s been on the
ballot in the past.
But with Hall of Fame rules stating only one person can be
elected in each category, I?m simply trying to understand the
voting logic ? or lack thereof ? of Filion earning the nod
over Burgess and driver Trevor Ritchie.
Was Blair Burgess snubbed for
the Canadian Hall of Fame?
I would have thought Burgess would win that race by open
lengths. In fact, he should be a Hall of Famer in both Canada
and the United States.
Burgess has outstanding credentials, including several
career achievements most, if not all, of the trainers already
enshrined in the Canadian Hall cannot match.
Let?s start with the Holy Grail. Burgess has won the
Hambletonian not once, but twice (Amigo Hall in 2003,
Glidemaster in 2006). He is the only Canadian in the history
of the sport, and only the second person of any nationality
USTA

When Ken Griffey, Jr. was elected to the Baseball Hall of

vote for him.

(Steve Elliott being the other), to win harness racing?s four
biggest stakes races ? the Hambletonian, Pepsi North
America Cup, Little Brown Jug and Meadowlands Pace (twice
? 14 years apart, in fact ? which shows his career longevity
and continued success).
He has excelled as a trainer of stakes champions of both
gaits as evidenced by the fact he conditioned a U.S. and
Canadian Horse of the Year in pacer Real Desire and a U.S.
Horse of the Year and Trotting Triple Crown winner in
Glidemaster. In fact, Burgess pupils have won two Horse of
the Year awards in Canada (Tell All (tied) in 2007 and Real
Desire in 2002) and two in the United States (Real Desire in
?02 and Glidemaster in 2006).
Voted the Canadian Trainer of the Year in 2007, Burgess has
seven other O?Brien Awards to his credit over a career in
which he?s won over 1,000 races and nearly $28 million.
strengthens a Hall of Fame that is only as good as its
inductees.
That?s not to say the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame
is lacking, just that it could be better. Outside of integrity ?
of which both Burgess and Filion reportedly excel ?
accomplishments should be the only measure of worthiness.
In baseball, a long list of star players with great stats are
not enshrined in Cooperstown. The Baseball Hall of Fame is
notoriously hard to get into, which is why it is one of the
most highly regarded Halls in the world and the honor is
truly meaningful.
In harness racing, we have a long list of exceptionally
talented, tremendously successful people worthy of
consideration, but not all will, or should, be inducted.
Blair Burgess more than deserves the honor.
He?s also excelled as an astute picker of horses. Many of his
biggest stakes stars were moderately-priced yearling
purchases. Glidemaster was $10,000, Real Desire cost
$16,000, Frugal Gourmet was $15,000, Amigo Hall was
$32,000, Road Machine was $22,000 and Armbro Deuce and
Tell All were $30,000 apiece.
Yes, the process is subjective and can be political, but
evaluating the candidates strictly on merit, the fact Burgess
did not make the cut is questionable.
He has produced multiple champions over multiple years
on both gaits with the North America?s biggest spoils in his
trophy case.
I?m not saying Filion doesn?t deserve to be a Hall of Famer,
but, perhaps, not ahead of Burgess.
Best I can figure it out, enough people voted strategically
for Filion ? perhaps because he has been on the ballot in
past years; perhaps because he?s 69, 15 years older than
Burgess; perhaps both ? which, in turn, denied Burgess the
honor in the first year he was eligible.
While it?s nice to see a class gentleman from one of
racing?s greatest families honored and it?s tempting to say
Burgess likely will be inducted next year or the year after
that, there?s no guarantee, which is why I?m not a fan of
strategic voting.
If voters consistently select those with the very best
accomplishments ? ignoring age or number of times on the
ballot or regional interests or likeability ? it only

Bit Of A Legend, Wiggle I t
Jiggleit top Levy, Round 4
Horse of the Year, making his second series start, won the
draw in the second division and his rivals dutifully demurred.
Yonkers Raceway?s Saturday night brought with it the
fourth round of the George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing
Series.
The result was a qualifier-esque first half (:28, :56.3) and a
:54.3 back portion (1:24.1, 1:51.1). The final margin was
two-and-three-quarter lengths over P H Supercam (Jason
Bartlett), who outgamed a pocket-sitting All Bets Off (Matt
Kakaley).
Wiggle It Jiggleit, a four-year-old Mr. Wiggles? Mozzi
Hanover gelding, is now two-for-three this season and
25-for-30 in his $2 million-plus career. George Teague Jr. and
Teague Racing Partnership co-own WIJI, trained by Clyde
Francis. The exacta paid $16.20, with the triple returning
$27.60.
?It?s as if he didn?t have the break after last season,?
Montrell Teague Jr. said. ?When I looked over and saw
everyone else take of the gate, I knew it was his race. I just

Four, $50,000 divisions brought the series further in focus,
with the gazing especially glaring at both Wiggle It Jiggleit
and Bit Of A Legend N.
Starting with the latter, even-money Bit Of A Legend N
(Jordan Stratton, $4) extended his perfect preliminary
resume, easily winning the third division from the pocket in
1:51.2. Making the first lead (:27.4) from post position No. 5
(in one notch after a scratch), Bit of a Legend N yielded to
Let?s Drink on It (Tim Tetrick).
That one then led the way (:55.2, 1:23.1), taking a
length-and-a-half lead into the lane. Unfortunately,
something went awry with Let?s Drink on It, who faded to
last, but not before he carried Bit Of A Legend N to the
Promised Land.
He won by a length in 1:51.2, with a second-over
Lettucerockthem A (Brian Sears) second and Limelight Beach
(Yannick Gingras) third.
Bit Of A Legend N, a seven-year-old Down Under son of
Bettor?s Delight? Soky?s Legend owned by Harry von
Knoblauch and trained by Peter Tritton, has won six of his
eight North American starts. The exacta (two wagering
choices) paid $14.80, with the triple returned $54.
Tetrick bookended Saturday night?s other Levy groupings,
the first with Ideal Cowboy ($11.20) in 1:52.1 and the finale
with Mach it So ($3.40), also in 1:52.1.
Ideal Cowboy, from second-over, snapped Take it Back Terry

Yonkers shipper Always At My Place displayed good early

McArdles Lightning came alongside the leader at the head of

McArdles Lightning got past Always At My Place in deep

The Youthful Series final highlighted an action-packed
Saturday (April 9) night at Mohawk Racetrack.
A competitive field of eight three-year-old pacers competed
in the $39,800 series final.
War N Munn was made the 9/5 favorite in the Youthful
final and came through in the clutch for his believers with a
career-best 1:52.2 victory.
The Carmen Auciello trainee was driven by Jonathan Drury
and found an early seat in fifth. Flaherty cut the mile and
posted opening fractions of :27 and :56.1, while Easy Lover
Hanover, who was going for the series sweep, sat in the
pocket.
The Catamount Kid came first up from fourth, which
allowed Drury to catch cover and place War N Munn
second-over around the final turn. Flaherty posted a
three-quarter clocking of 1:24.2 with his rivals breathing
down his neck.
In the stretch, War N Munn fired off cover and despite
drifting out, the Auciello trainee cruised home to a
four-length victory over Easy Lover Hanover. Flaherty
finished third, while The Catamount Kid was fourth.
A son of Stonebridge Regal? Stonebridge Venus, War N
Munn was forced to skip leg two and qualify due to miscue
in leg one. Despite making a break in the first round, the
sophomore pacing colt finished second.
Saturday?s victory gives War N Munn four wins in seven
starts this season, including a second series final score. Back
on Feb. 19, the Auciello trainee captured The Count B series
final.
War N Munn, who is owned by George Munniksma of
Washington, NJ, now has over $106,000 in career earnings.
He paid $5.80 to win.
Also on Saturday, the first leg of the Don Mills Trotting
Series and the $34,000 Preferred Pace were contested.
Musical Rhythm had been the talk of the town all winter
and he brought his impressive talents to Mohawk Saturday.
The Ben Baillargeon trainee picked up his eighth victory in a
row in the eight-horse $20,000 Don Mills Trotting Series first
leg.
Driven by Mario Baillargeon, Musical Rhythm sprinted out
to the front and never looked back. He posted fractions of
:28.1, :58.1, 1:27.4 and 1:55.4 to score his sixth victory in six
starts this year.
Grana Padanno, who is also trained by Baillargeon, finished
two-lengths back in second, while Mystery Bet was third.
A four-year-old son of Cantab Hall, Musical Rhythm has
now won 10 of 11 starts since being purchased by Santo and
Nunzio Vena, Claude Hamel and Baillargeon in November.
Saturday?s victory pushes his seasonal earnings to $81,000.
Musical Rhythm now has 15 career victories and earnings
exceeding $177,000. He paid $2.50 to win.

First Class Horse named
A lberta?s HOY
The Champions of Alberta were celebrated at Friday?s
(April 8) 2016 Alberta Standardbred Horse Association's
annual Awards Gala.
Industry partners from Horse Racing Alberta, Century
Downs Racetrack and Casino, the Alberta Standardbred
Horse Association (ASHA_, and many sponsors, owners,
breeders and horsepeople were on hand to congratulate the
horses and horsepeople who excelled in 2015.
First Class Horse was victorious in both three-year-old colt
and gelding category as well as the prestigious Horse of the
Year. Trained and driven by long-time horsemen and Hall of
Famer Keith Clark and owned by Robert Jones and Doris
McDougall, First Class Horse was definitely a standout for
these categories.
The Meadowlark Farms filly Divas Dragonfly trained by Carl
Archibald and driven to numerous victories by Jamie Gray,
took home both two-year-old categories of Alberta Sired
Filly as well as Alberta Filly.
Travis Cullen had a great year again, taking home driver,
trainer, and horseperson of the year as well as six awards for
horses he trained and drove.
Once again, the combination of Kelly Hoerdt and Blair
Corbeil was well represented taking home owner of the year,
as well as two-year-old Alberta Sired colt / gelding (with Dr.
M Stewart), three-year-old filly and Fastest Boy with Ghost
Pine.
The Ron McLeod Award was presented to long-time
horsemen Rod Hennessy, who carries on the tradition of

generations before him in standardbred racing in Alberta.
Hennessy has dedicated many years to the industry in many
different facets of the industry and his son Mike heads the
next generation of Hennessy horsemen.
Long-time owner and breeder Pieter Besselink was
honored with the Breeders?Award of Recognition for over 30
years of dedication to the industry.
For the first time ever, caretaker of the year was tied
between Kaitlin Haining and Danielle Schedlosky. Each of
these hard working, gifted women was honored to receive
the award, but both were very excited for the other to have
received it as well.

Rockin Ron wins ninth straight
Rockin Ron invaded Miami Valley Raceway Saturday night
(April 9) and ran his win streak to nine with an impressive
1:52 win in the $20,000 Open I pace. Driver Chris Page sent
the prohibitive favorite, who won six consecutive races at
The Meadows this year and a pair at Hoosier Park at the end
of 2015, directly to the front from an assigned outside post
position.
Trained and driven by Gerry Hudon for the Racing Club,
Warrawee Rap prevailed in the afternoon's $5,200 third race
for filly and mare maidens.
The 2-5 favorite was gapped back in fourth-place through
fractions of :28.4, :57.4 and 1:29.1 before coming on to score
the 2:00.3 victory over 7-2 second choice Joyful Sound.
Whysantanna was the best of the rest, finishing 11-1/2
lengths behind in third.
More than 50 new owners purchased a share in the
Century Downs Racing this year for just $250 each. The Club
owns two horses, including the Mach Three? All For Me filly
Warrawee Rap and four-year-old pacing mare Southwind
Luna, who has not yet raced for the newly-formed group put
together by the racetrack's marketing department. Members
will get to experience all that is involved in horse ownership
throughout the Century Downs harness racing season. So far,
it's been a great start for the group with Warrawee Rap
earning two close seconds and Saturday?s victory in her first
three starts since the Club launched in late-March.
? Standardbred Canada
Although eventual runnerup Fancy Creek Elusiv (Josh
Sutton) forced the four-year-old Real Desire? Im All A Roan
gelding to scoot to the quarter-mile marker in :26.4, Rockin
Ron was able to post a pedestrian second quarter (reaching
the half in :56) before coasting through an identical :56 back
half. Fancy Creek Elusive did make it interesting in the final
strides, falling just a half-length short. Tyber Tyke (Peter
Wrenn) raced well to finish third. Rockin Ron is trained by
Ron Burke and owned by Burke Racing, Weaver Bruscemi and
the RTC Stable.
Miami Valley has been on a roll handle-wise with
back-to-back betting records on Monday (April 4) and
Tuesday (April 5) afternoons earlier this week. Following a
handle of $395,433 on the Monday matinee, a total of
$401,001 was wagered on the Tuesday program.

Curmudgeon bows to Finklestein
In response to last week's letters:

year. I remember one race where Insko was boxed in on the
rail at Roosevelt, and it opened up just in time for him to
sneak through to keep the streak alive.
Curmudgeon bows to Finklestein
Richard Finklestein is absolutely correct. Overtrick did not
race against Bret Hanover. I guess when one gets to my
advanced age, although Richard is there is well, one
sometimes sees things that never occurred. Richard, I stand
corrected.
John Christiansen is partially correct. Tarquinius had the
ability to become a horse for the ages, but unfortunately fate
intervened and he left us far too prematurely. In terms of
sheer ability, he was one of the all time greats and I
considered having him on my Baker?s Dozen. I feel vindicated
in not doing so, since after the article was published two
different people asked me who this Tarquinius horse was. I
am almost certain that he was not a gelding. He was a
stallion. I was told that his owner was in conversation with
Mr. Sheppard at Hanover Shoe Farms to possibly stand him
there once his racing career was done. Tarquinius died either
during or after an operation to correct something thought to
be not necessarily essential. Complications developed and
the horse died. I believe that a lawsuit resulted that was
eventually settled out of court.
I would have no problem at all putting Overcall on my
honorable mention list because of his undefeated season. If
that is the case, then Forrest Skipper belongs there as well.
Also my dear friend The Captain - Captaintreacherous
deserves honorable mention.
? The Curmudgeon / Hanover, PA
A nod to The Curmudgeon
I was amazed how closely the Curmudgeon and I think
alike on the greatest horses, and I particularly enjoyed the
comments from those with differing opinions. Keep'm
coming. I disagreed with the idea that Tarquinius should be
moved up out of the AEs because as great as he was, his
window of superiority was just too short. Same reason why
Overcall does not belong anywhere on the list. His window
was just too small. But we sure loved Overcall's undefeated
If Wiggle It Jiggleit keeps showing the form he showed in
his first Levy race, he soon will be moving up the ranks.
Frequently, it is the non-winning races that show how great a
horse is (e.g., Niatross?fourth-place finish at the
Meadowlands after a speed break in the first turn followed
by a monster brush to the top before the half), and WIJIs
second place was off the charts circling dead cover. One has
to wonder why all of those Yonkers drivers were sitting out
there on the outside not going forward, but I digress.
? Gil Winston / Manalapan, NJ
No game plan for Wiggle It in last week?s Levy?
With high anticipation I tuned into Yonkers Saturday night
(April 2) expecting to see another outstanding performance
from the equine rocket, Wiggle It Jiggleit. However, what I
got was I got was a glimpse of a supremely talented horse
and a seemingly over-matched driver.
During pre-race interviews the driver admitted he had no
game plan and would let the race unfold as it unfolds. Well,
he spoke the truth. The feeling I got was that I was watching
a confused driver that perhaps thought he had the field
covered by five seconds and all he had to do was put his
rocket three-wide and simply zoom by the others. How do
you let a classy closer that is starting just one position inside
of you out-leave you and that in a relatively moderate
fraction? Surprise! You are racing against the best drivers in
the world and they want to win, too. Contrast another young
driver, Matt Kakaley, and how he employed a revised strategy
of leaving aggressively with his "closer". He did not rely on
the horse to determine what to do.
One thing is for sure, Always B Miki and driver David Miller
are waiting around the corner and further less-than-inspired
drives by Montrell Teague will not beat them.
On another front, I see Yonkers with a casino which has
attracted better horses and enhanced purses being out
performed, make that crushed by the Meadowlands. Why are
their handles dropping? I would be interested in seeing a
discussion with Yonkers' marketing principal and what they
plan to do in order combat the drop offs. With an impending
casino to be added to the Meadowlands in the near future, it
would seem Yonkers needs to stem their losses now rather
than later. Overseas pools and trot races are apparently not
resolving the issues. I do not understand why Marketing is
always reactionary in this business?

Meyers fires back at Haaker
While in many ways it's against by better judgment to
respond at all to David Haaker' letter bemoaning what I had
to say about the end of video stream on the Meadowlands, I
was hoping I would get a more intelligent, reasoned
response from someone connected to the Meadowlands
about their actions. Then again, Haaker is a lawyer and
maybe he has some connection and was asked to respond as
he did.
You are right about one thing David, I have never paid $5
for a hot in my life, but I don't know that I've ever even paid
$2 because with rare exceptions. I don't eat out, and all the
food I consume is made by my family, or myself, from scratch.
horrific decline in quality of racing, which was only good on
a few select stake-studded weekends last year and has
declined this year.
The lack of any real response from the Meadowlands and
the fact that we are not talking huge dollars being made by
the Meadowlands with this change, makes me question
whether or not I should just plain dump the Meadowlands at
this stage.
I've stated my case and will not be adding any additional
thoughts or answering any other responses.
? Avy Meyers / Chicago, IL
I also shun sports bars, night clubs, casinos and the like, so
how is it that I tie to the Meadowlands?
I am a horse player. I don't gamble with friends, bet NCAA
brackets, football, play the lottery, etc.
I love quality harness racing. I love handicapping and I love
playing the horses, preferably in person, but Illinois racing is
on life support and has been for some time.
I have handled over $3,000 on given nights, keeping
careful records. I have averaged nightly handles as high as
$800 some years and average a 99.7 per cent return on my
wagers. I have no interest in the circuses, just the basic
product.
When I stopped going to the track to build my business,
what brought me back was initially watching a short-lived
ESPN horse racing show that featured harness. I moved to a
local show on Sports Channel featuring Mike Paradise that
showed the previous nights?races. When Sportsman?s Park
closed and real meets stopped happening, I found the video
stream of the Meadowlands.
Many tracks, much less well off than the Meadowlands
share their video stream and I consider that a sign of true
class, of respect for fans and is an unmatched marketing tool
for those who may come to love harness racing.
While the Meadowlands has a rich past history, the book on
present ownership is still in question. The quality of their
weekend cards is poor, barely better than some grade Btracks. The Meadowlands management has called on those
in the industry from drivers to trainers to owners to sacrifice
to race at the Meadowlands.
It's not the $5 David, it's the attitude of the Meadowlands
and the idea that the bars and clubs, restaurants and
gimmicks and now the serious possibility of a casino is their
primary concern, followed by the racing.
The idea of charging for their video stream despite the
