Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh
From the Executive Director
DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,
In 1989, when Lorraine and Ken Wagner were just starting what would become the Emmaus Community,
I was living more than 1000 miles from Pittsburgh, and I had no idea about the path my life would take.
I was familiar with the writings of Jean Vanier and the L’Arche Community, but could not have predicted
that in a few short years my life would intersect with Emmaus in a journey that would lead me here today.
In 1994, while in graduate school at Pitt, I began working for Emmaus as a Direct Support Professional.
I soon fell in love with the people, the philosophy, the values, and the mission. It was a perfect “fit.”
I became Executive Director in 2009, and I have had the privilege of building relationships with our board of
directors, staff, volunteers, donors, and most importantly with the people we support. My vision for the future
of Emmaus includes our continued commitment to quality and excellence in our homes and in our services.
I anticipate increased governmental oversight and regulation along with decreased governmental funding.
I expect to build our financial and program capacity, so that Emmaus will continue to open more homes and to
expand our non-residential program, thereby diversifying services and helping to reduce the waiting list.
Challenging goals? Yes. But with your help our dreams become reality. Emmaus is about walking the path
of life with people with disabilities. It’s about breaking bread with people, literally at the table, but more
importantly in the sharing of lives. Each and every person in the Emmaus Community has gifts to offer –
including you! Thank you for being a part of this amazing journey. I sincerely hope that you will continue to
walk with Emmaus and help us create a society where everyone is valued, respected, welcomed and loved.
Sincerely,

From Our Co-Founder
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS! A LETTER FROM EMMAUS FOUNDER LORRAINE WAGNER
Yes, the Emmaus Community is celebrating their 25th Anniversary; Twenty-five wonderful years. Our first
meeting was September 19, 1989. On that day it was decided we would “join forces” to create a program that
would furnish residential homes for individuals who needed a home, whose family members could no longer
care for them, or would not be able to care for them in the near future.
Thus the Emmaus Community was born! The wonderful residents in our homes are “the core” of Emmaus.
The Administration Team and our Staff have kept the original vision of Emmaus alive. Our supporters and
volunteers have never faltered. They are always there for us!
Thank-you all for your ongoing support! We have been blessed! All at Emmaus look forward to our next 25
years in gratitude and with the knowledge that we have many good people who are anxious to support us.
“And now we thank you, our God,
and praise your
glorious name!”
