DEAR CALDERA SUPPORTERS:
In 2011-2012, thanks to your generosity, Caldera provided
arts and nature mentoring to more than 400 underserved
middle and high school youth, helping them to find their
voices, their confidence, and their unique paths to success.
This year, we focused on cinematic and theatre arts.
While we continued a variety of visual and literary arts
learning, students focused on telling their stories through
short films (see page 7-13 for highlights). We collaborated
with a range of organizations, including Bend Film Festival,
Northwest Film Center, Super Project Lab, Whoop-Dee-Doo
Theatre, and the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, to
name a few, to bring learning, mentoring, and presentation
opportunities to our youth.
We also held two spectacular end-of-year Caldera
youth film showcases; one at the Tower Theatre in Bend,
and one at the University of Oregon’s White Stag Building
in Portland. How exciting it is to have your own film shown
on a large screen in a real theatre with your family
in attendance!
This year we were proud to announce our first Ford
Family Foundation Golden Spot Awards, as part of our
Artists in Residence (AiR) Program see page 23 and we
launched a deeper integration of our AiR and Youth Program.

Knowing how artists work as powerful agents of positive
social change, our goal is to offer our youth as diverse a
range of artists and mentoring opportunities as possible,
while also inspiring more artists to develop their own social
practice involving youth.
In 2011–2012, we also launched a new outcome-based
Evaluation Program to go deeper into identifying and reporting
how young people benefit from Caldera’s programs and
services. With this approach, we join a progressive movement
of national social and human service organizations who
are adopting new ways to assess their programs. Stay
tuned for more on this!
We are proud and grateful that to date we have earned
six National Endowment for the Arts grant awards and this
year we were again recognized as one of the nation’s top 50
arts/humanities-based youth programs by the President’s
Committee on the Arts & the Humanities.
Thank you for helping us reach these achievements, and
for being a part of our community of support for Caldera’s
youth. It is your support that gives them access to the tools
they need to unleash their fullest potential, and we are

In 1996, Caldera began bringing youth with limited
opportunities, from both the country and the city,
together at a summer arts camp in Central Oregon.
This program has evolved into a supportive year-round
community providing arts and nature programming,
group mentoring, and community building that benefits
thousands of youth and adults.
To date, Caldera’s mentors and teaching artists
have helped 1,700 students develop their creativity,
allowing them to:

transformation of underserved youth through innovative,
year-round art and environmental programs.
2. TRANSITION TO JOBS OR COLLEGE
Fueling all of Caldera’s work is a passionate belief in the
power of creativity.

We employ paid mentors and professional teaching artists
who support, guide, inspire, challenge, mentor, and inspire
for seven years (throughout middle school, high school, and
into early adulthood), so youth develop the strength to turn
away from negative models and paths and instead take on
the world in a positive, creative, hopeful way.

1. GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL
In June 2012, 90% of Caldera 12th graders graduated or
attained their high school equivalency diploma.
Scholarships are available for Caldera students who have
completed high school and plan on attending college.
Awards range in amount from $500–$6000. We are deeply
grateful to Linda Carlson Hart and Bob and Mary Ann
Woodell for their generous support of this program. Over
the years, Caldera student alumni have become teachers,
firefighters, medical personnel, and youth workers.
3. BECOME CREATIVE CHANGE AGENTS WITHIN THEIR
FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES
Caldera youth inspire their parents, friends, and siblings,
and give back to their communities in diverse ways.
Caldera also partners with creative industry partners in
advertising, architecture, film, design, and other artistic
areas. Caldera is proud to work with Wieden+Kennedy,
Ziba Design, Nike, Allied Works Architecture, tbd agency,
and LAIKA/house, among others, to provide youth with
unique perspectives into professional artistic careers.

HOW WE DO IT
Every year, Caldera chooses a thematic focus to channel
our creative energies and provide a variety of programming
for our youth. For 2011-2012, we embarked on a journey
to explore the cinematic arts.

of friends that I enjoy staying in contact with throughout
the year. I cannot think of anywhere else where people
from different towns, different backgrounds, different
skin colors and different likes can meet together to form

This year, beginning at summer camp and continuing
throughout the school year, students had opportunities
to explore improvisation, theater, set design, animation,
cinematography, story-boarding, digital editing, costume
design, shadow puppetry, and audio production. Student
work was featured at Portland’s 35th Annual Young
People’s Film Festival and Bend’s Future Filmmakers
Festival. Caldera also hosted film festivals for two
end-of-year Student Showcases.
Thanks to the support of the Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory
Commission, Caldera was able to purchase state-ofthe-art film equipment and software for students to use.
The equipment allowed Caldera students to deepen their
skills, be prepared for possible careers in creative technology,
and inspire a greater breadth of creativity in their films.

SUMMER CAMP
MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM
Every year, 150 students (through three separate sessions)
experience a life-changing arts and nature camp at our Arts
Center, located on 116 acres of mountain and forest land
at the edge of Blue Lake, west of Sisters, Oregon.
Our work with middle school students takes place during
the school year in our Arts Partner middle schools. Weekly
arts mentoring classes are taught by Caldera’s middle
school mentors and take place during the school day.
Camp brings together students from diverse Oregon
communities and inaugurates youth into the Caldera
community. Students work with professional teaching
artists and youth advocates at camp, and participate
in community circles, challenge courses, campfires,
and outdoor activities. Arts courses offered at camp
this year included photography, fiber arts, film, theatre,
drumming, writing, and music production.
Central Oregon Arts Partner Middle Schools are:
Elton Gregory, Jefferson County, Obsidian, Pilot Butte,
and Terrebonne Community School. We also support
programs at Sisters Middle School.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The following are some examples of the innovative projects
and collaborations our students worked on in 2011-2012:
After camp, students continued their explorations in film
throughout the school year. In the weekly sessions with
middle schools, mentors did a “Poetry in Motion” project
where students combined short poems and visual imagery
about themselves to create short films.
• Students worked with Super Project Lab to create film
shorts that included commercials, PSAs, and mock reality
television shows.
• A collaboration with theater group Whoop-Dee-Doo and
Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) provided
a camp session art experience that continued into the
school year, giving students an opportunity to design
sets and perform in PICA’s Time Based Arts Festival.
• As part of our end-of-the-year events, Caldera middle
and high school student films were juried and selected
for film showcases in Portland and Bend. These were
major events for our families and the public, held at the
University of Oregon’s White Stag building in Portland
and at the Tower Theatre in Bend.
Portland Arts Partner Middle Schools include:
HB Lee, Jason Lee K-8, Open Meadow,
Peninsula K-8, and SEI Academy.
HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
Our school-year activities with high school students
take place through regular weekend workshops. In 2012,
Caldera began offering Saturday events and activities
for high school students three Saturdays a month in both
Central Oregon and Portland.
High schoolers also participate in our “Mini Camp” Weekend
Intensives and work with our Creative Industry Partners so that
they stay involved with Caldera throughout the school year.
HIGHLIGHTS:
“Participating in Caldera has helped me in many ways,
such as getting better with public speaking, having a
better understanding of what I want to do, and much
more. I have learned that it feels great to get up in front
of a group of people who support you and then express
yourself. The program throughout the year is important,
not only because it allows me to see my Caldera family,
but it also allows me to do things I wouldn’t normally
be able to do.” –Brandon, 16

• Central Oregon high school students participated
in a Sculpture Workshop with professional artist,
Erin Beaver Valentine.
• High school students created commissioned
photographic pieces that were printed on wood
and showcased in the gallery of Wieden+Kennedy
and the Tower Theatre in Bend, before being permanently
installed at Tamarack Hall (a building at our Arts Center).
• A group of our central Oregon high school students went
on a backpacking adventure with Big City Mountaineers
and mentors to the Olympic National Park in Washington.
IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCIES
During the school year, professional artists visit
each of our Arts Partner middle schools for a week-long
residency. Students work with artists on special projects
that are then featured through school-wide performances,
presentations, or displays. These residencies extend
our arts-learning reach to over 5,000 students a year.
This year these week-long artists’ residencies and our
Weekend Intensives included special workshops in
the cinematic arts.
WEEKEND INTENSIVES
In the fall and spring, middle and high school students
meet up for weekends of fun-filled activities and art
workshops. Essentially a “mini-camp,” students sign
up for a menu of classes and work with a variety of artists.
At this year’s Intensives, students worked on photography,
video, collage, improvisation, and more.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Students painted portraits of blues legends that were
featured as banners and sold as posters at the Portland
Blues Festival. These will continue to be sold at Caldera
events and Crossroads Music, Portland.

COLLEGE & TRADE SCHOOL
SCHOLARSHIPS
Caldera students who participate for at least two years
in our program are eligible to receive special scholarship
opportunities. We are grateful to University of Oregon’s
School of Journalism and Marylhurst College, both of whom
offer specific scholarships for Caldera Alumni. Also, through
the Caldera Scholarship Fund, Caldera students who qualify
receive funds to help them pursue trade school, community
college, or university studies at institutions of their choosing.
ABBOTT-CARLSON
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
“It is my belief that education is a legacy that can be

Abbott-Carlson Scholarships are available for all Caldera
students who have completed high school and plan
to attend college. Applicants are awarded a scholarship
based solely on intent—it is not a competitive process.
Scholarships are based on need and funds are used
only for tuition, books, lab fees, or expenses directly
related to post-secondary education. Thanks to the
Abott-Carlson scholarship, 12 former Caldera students
received scholarships for the 2012–2013 academic year.
The awards ranged in amount from $500–$5,000.

As youth grow in their lives past high school,
we don’t lose touch! We host a yearly Alumni
Party and many other public events that we
encourage all participants and families of
Caldera to attend. We also have many former
students who come back and teach at camp
as artists, assistants, or advocates.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM ROSTER
2011
Every winter, the activities at our Arts Center shift
to immersion in the arts for professional adult artists
through Caldera’s Artists in Residence (AiR) program.
January through March, Caldera provides month-long
residencies, giving artists the gift of time and space to create.
Artists are awarded residencies through a rigorous, thorough
application process juried by professional artists and art
leaders in their fields. The residencies provide artists with
workspace, unfettered time, an inspiring natural environment,
presentation and teaching opportunities with our youth, and
a community of other artists. Caldera’s Artists in Residence
is a research and development laboratory of the arts that
demonstrates our support of creative experimentation and
dedication to cultivating creative individuals. Since 2002,
Caldera has served 300+ artists in this way.
We are deeply grateful for Ford Family Foundation’s support
of Caldera’s Artists in Residence program: a two-year
$40,000 Golden Spot Award that funds operating expenses
and stipends to Oregon Artists in Residence at Caldera.

Golden Spot Award Recipients

Over 300 guests joined us for the 2011 Stories of
Change fund-raising luncheon on November 3. We heard
inspirational stories of change from guest speaker and
former Oregon Senator, Avel Gordly, and one of Caldera’s
students, Shark. Thanks to our generous supporters,
we raised $112,000 and secured an additional $110,000
in matching funds for Caldera’s programs.
Thank you to all our attendees, donors, and supporters
who made these events such a success!
We send our sincerest appreciation and thanks to all the
volunteers who helped us in 2011. Your expertise, time,
wisdom, love and unselfish willingness to give to Caldera
help make every student and program at Caldera a success.
Special thanks to the 2011 Stories of Change Committee
