As we enter the home stretch, many significant events will appear on your
calendars, including graduation, track and field meets and end-of-year field
trips. When schedules get busy, it becomes even more important for students to
remain focused and stay the course when learning in the classroom. Now is a
good time for students to review their goals and make a sincere effort to finish
the year strong. It is also a good time to consider what outdoor activities are
available to children. As our fields begin to dry out, students will find
themselves playing more outdoor sports and activities again. We will likely see
more soccer balls, footballs and baseball gloves brought to school in the near
future, and we recommend that these items be labeled with your child’s name.
The nice weather also brings the temptation for students to leave school during
the lunch hour. Please remember that any change in your child’s regular lunch
plans should be presented to the school in writing. We all want to ensure a safe
noon hour for all students.
DSBN Road Race
Long Weekend
Ahead!
Please be advised that
schools will be closed
on Monday May 23rd
in recognition of
Victoria Day.
Gusting Winds and cold weather didn’t stop
runners from participating in the 7th annual
DSBN Roadrace on Sunday April 17th.
Funds raised from the event go towards
supporting nutrition programs in DSBN
schools from across the Niagara region.
The following students participated in the
run and represented Ferndale well: Justine
Leemet, Sajed Hariri, Cole Saxton, Montana
Riley Wilder Bates, Vanessa Ho, Hailey
Guinard and Cassie Rolston. Thanks to Mr.
Schatz for organizing our group and training
with them over the past month.

EQAO
Our Grade 3 and 6 students will be participating in the EQAO Assessment during the weeks of
May 30 through June 9.
We encourage parents to
avoid scheduling any
appointments for students during this time
period.
Graduation Date
Mark your calendar!
Grade 8 Graduation will
be held at the Merritton
Community Centre,
Monday June 27, at 7 pm
Kids Help Phone
Thank-you to all students in Grades 3 - 8 who collected pledges to support
the Kids Help Phone this year. On May 4, there will be two events to thank
those students that were able to collect a minimum of $10 in pledges.
Students in Grades 3 - 5 will enjoy a movie
experience on the large screen in the
morning, and students in Grades 6 - 8 will
enjoy a video dance party in the afternoon.
With the support of many students, Ferndale
was able to bring in over $2600. Well done
Ferndale!
The Wind Storm of 2011!
Last week we experienced some of the most severe weather we have
endured in years. While the conditions outside may have posed a threat to
our students, everyone remained safe indoors until the extreme conditions
subsided. We were without power for 2 days, but managed to remain “open
for business” while maintaining a safe environment for student learning. As
is the case for all situations that involve inclement weather, the school
remains open for all students who can safely arrive at school.
Rankin Run for Cancer
School Council
Our next meeting is
scheduled for May 17th
at 6:45 pm in the school
library.
Volunteer Tea
Our volunteer appreciation day is scheduled for
the afternoon of June 1.
Invitations will be sent
home later this month.
A committed group of Junior and Intermediate runners, along with staff, has
volunteered to represent Ferndale School as a proud participant in the
“Rankin Cancer Run”, which will take place at the Grantham Lions Club (732
Niagara St.) on Saturday, May 28, 2011. It will begin at 10:00 am and it will
end at approximately noon. (see www.rankincancerrun.com for more
information). The Rankin Cancer Run raises funds for a number of local
cancer support organizations,
including, St. Catharines Site
Oncology, St. Catharines Site
Diagnostic Imaging, Wellspring,
Hospice, and more. Our school
community is invited to support our
team, either through pledges for our
runners, or by participating in our
“Loose Change” initiative, which will
run from Monday, May 2, through
Thursday, May 19, 2011.
