Delaware Man Dies After Car Crashes Into Tree

A man was killed Wednesday night
in Greenbackville after he drove his
vehicle off the road and struck a tree.
State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya
identified the deceased as Kenneth
R. Wolhar, 66, of Newark, Del. The
accident occurred at approximately
8:20 p.m. on the 37400 block of Davey Jones Boulevard. Wolhar was driving north in a 2012 Toyota Prius just
north of Route 679. He died on impact,
Anaya said.
“Alcohol did not play a factor in the
crash and it is undetermined … if the driver was wearing his seatbelt,” she added.
First Sgt. B.E. Jeff Jones, commander
of the Eastern Shore division, said, “The
investigation is ongoing and it is unknown if speed, alcohol or a medical condition are factors in the crash.” He said
Trooper Dane Lawson is investigating.
It was the seventh traffic fatality on
the Eastern Shore this year and the
second this week.
Correction
Cape Charles Councilman Steven
R. Bennett was re-elected earlier this
month. Andy Buchholz and former
Mayor Dora Sullivan also won council seats. The Post previously reported
that there was a fourth winner.

The sixth fatal traffic accident on the
Eastern Shore this year took the life of
a 28-year-old pedestrian Monday night.
Trooper Ethan Price was called to the
intersection of Lankford Highway and
Accomac Road at about 9:15 p.m. after
being notified that two people, who were
walking in the area had been hit by a
vehicle, 1st Sgt. B.E. Jeff Jones, state police commander for the area, reported.
It was determined that three males
had been attempting to cross Lankford
Highway in a place that “was not lit or
visible,” according to State Police Sgt.
Michelle Anaya. Two of the pedestrians
were struck by a 2016 Nissan Altima
driven by Charles M. Gale, 63, of Berlin, Md.
Damarcus Johnson of Adams Road
in Greenbush died at the scene, Anaya
said. Kentrell Savage, 25, of Wharton
Circle in Greenbush was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.
Jones said the northbound lanes of
Lankford Highway were closed for almost
three hours while Senior Trooper Johnny Godwin led crash reconstruction efforts. The investigation is continuing. No
charges have been made. The driver had
minor injuries. Anaya said, “Neither alcohol nor speed played a factor” in the crash.
The third pedestrian was not identified as he was not considered a part of
the crash.
A spokesperson for the Eastern Shore
9-1-1 Center said units from Parksley,
Bloxom, Onley and Tasley responded.

Hospital Beneficiary of $300,000

earmarked for the Heart Center at the new hospital near Onley. The
center will be named after Dr. Lloyd J. Kellam III, the area’s long-time
cardiologist. It will combine all cardiopulmonary services on the first
floor, where Dr. Kellam also will have his offices. Pictured (from left)

Men Killed in Crash Identified

Two brothers were identified Monday as the men who were burned beyond recognition in a traffic crash
near Parksley last month.
First Sgt. B.E. Jeff Jones, commander of the State Police on the
Eastern Shore, said the driver was Joel Aguilar-Vasquez, 34, of Parks Road
in Parksley. His brother, Hugolino
Aguilar-Vasquez, 18, of Eden Street
in Salisbury, Md., was the passenger.
Both were originally from Guatemala.
The identifications were made by
the Virginia Department of Forensic
Science through DNA analysis. It is
still unknown why they were southbound in the northbound lanes of
Lankford Highway when they collided head-on with a 1995 Peterbilt tractor-trailer. Jones said toxicology reports have not been completed yet.
State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said
officers were dispatched to the scene at
1:12 a.m. April 17. Upon arrival, they
found “a 2001 Kia fully engulfed shutting down all lanes” of the highway.
When the fire was extinguished, the two
bodies were found inside the car.
Richard Timmons, the driver of the
truck, was not injured. No other information about him was available.

Northampton Grand Jury
A young Willis Wharf man was indicted by a Northampton Grand Jury last week, charged with robbing a
9-year-old girl last August at gunpoint
and related offenses.
Eighteen-year-old Jabias Keandre
Kellam is being held in Eastern Shore
Regional Jail. Northampton Circuit
Court records state he is accused of
using a semi-automatic pistol while
breaking into the El Rachito in Cheriton to commit robbery.
The store belongs to Adela Montalvo. Kellam also was indicted on a count
of “presenting a firearm and putting …
the child in fear of serious bodily harm.”
The alleged incidents occurred on Aug.
7, 2015. Kellam was arrested April 15.
Tracy Demetrius Johnson, 35, of
Cape Charles was indicted on a third offense of assault and battery of a family
member. Jacob Smith wrote in a criminal complaint, “My wife, Tracy Johnson,
tried to cut me with a razor and threw
hot water on me and my daughter.”
Jamal D’Angelo Stratton, 21, of
Cape Charles was indicted on counts
of hit and run with property damage
of more than $1,000, reckless driving,
and driving an uninsured vehicle.
Darius Tywan Weeks, 31, of Machipongo was indicted on a count of strangulation of Kaneisha Spady of Coal
Kiln Road in Painter on Feb. 7. According to Spady, the two were arguing,
“next thing I know he’s grabbing my
neck and slams me to the floor, literally beating me like a man.”
Ronnie William Robinson Jr., 43,
of Portsmouth, Va., was indicted on
counts of driving after having been declared an habitual offender and felony
DUI on Feb. 13.
Richard Waldon Sullivan Jr., 60, of
Belle Haven was indicted on counts of
driving after having been declared an
habitual offender and felony DUI, occurring March 30.
Accomack Circuit Court
A Parksley man was sentenced last
week in Accomack Circuit Court to five
years in prison for threatening to burn
down his girlfriend’s house last year.
All but a year was suspended for
Efrain Soto Lopez, 28, of Parksley. The
term was set to run consecutively with
the 12 months in jail he got for assault
and battery of a family member. Both
incidents occurred Jan. 24, 2015.
The victim, Elvia Sandoval, told police Lopez was drinking a lot of alcohol
all week. She “told Lopez she did not
want to be with him anymore … Lopez
grabbed her by the throat and punched
her in the face.” He then threatened “to
burn her house down and kill her.”
In another case, Jay Anthony McGlown, 23, of Belle Haven, formerly of
Chincoteague, was sentenced to five
years in prison for grand larceny of
property belonging to Thomas Clark on
April 19, 2015. All but a year was suspended. He was ordered to go through
a diversion program after serving the
time. Supervised probation was set for
three years. McGlown was ordered to
pay restitution of $640 to Clark.
Bert Like IV, 33, of Hallwood was sentenced for burglary at the home of Cherell
Lewis on June 23, 2014, to five years in
prison, with all but three suspended.
Dewey Elmer Hall, 50, of Chincoteague pleaded guilty to assault and battery of town Officer T.L. Greenly and
being drunk in public on Nov. 11, 2015.
A presentence report was ordered.
Glenneva Weeks, 52, of Cheriton
pleaded guilty to possessing nearly $1,000 worth of counterfeit bills on
June 24, 2015. Weeks was released on
existing bond until a presentence report is completed.
Accomack District Court
According to records filed in Accomack
General District Court, Corbin Kenji
Drummond Jr., 36, of Atlantic is accused
of threatening to burn Keith Lewis’ home
on Atlantic Road in Atlantic on April 20.
Lewis said Drummond came to his home
and an argument ensued. “I was standing
to my door and he pulled out a knife,” the
victim reported to police. “He kept throwing things at my house. He said when it
gets dark, he is going to burn my trailer.”
Drummond also was charged with
assault and intentionally destroying
property, both misdemeanors. Bail was
set at $1,000 secured.
Kenyon Lamar Holden, 23, of Melfa
was charged with arson of an unoccupied building on April 19. He is being
held without bond.

Northampton County Closes in on FY2017 Budget

Northampton supervisors are rapidly reaching a consensus on the proposed FY2017 tax rate.
At Tuesday’s session, Chairman
Spencer Murray reported that the
board has shaved as much as possible from the budget presented by the
various departments to the point that
taxes might need to be raised less than
one-half of a cent per $100 of assessed
value. It was generally agreed that
the board would advertise for no more
than a 2-cent increase in the event that
items are added back into the budget
as a result of the public hearing that
will be held May 23.
Given the adjustments made as a
result of the recent property assessments, the actual tax rate could range
from 83 cents to 85 cents per $100.
The average property value fell about
20 percent due to the re-assessment.
Those wishing to see just what their
new taxes would be can contact the office of Commissioner of the Revenue
Charlene Gray after the board settles
on a final tax rate.
The board will hold a public hearing
on the re-assessment on May 17.
Supervisor Granville Hogg questioned
Gray regarding tax rebates for citizens
on a very limited income. Gray said that
depending on the individual’s income, tax
relief up to $400 is available for the coming tax year. She added that 78 citizens
had applied for tax relief based on their
income, and that if all are approved for
the full amount, $31,000 would be added
to the budget for next year.
The proposed FY2017 budget includes four new Emergency Medical
Services (EMS) positions, four new patrol vehicles for the Sheriff’s Department, 2 percent raises for county personnel, and the addition of two shortterm positions for the commissioner of
the revenue, a school resource officer,
a part-time building inspector, and a
code compliance official.

Road (the main roadway entering Cape
Charles). It has been bid and barring unforeseen problems, construction should
begin later this year. The total cost for
the project is just over $11.4 million.
The board voted to repeal a portion
of the county Zoning Ordinance regarding wells and septic systems after it was pointed out that the matter
is covered by Virginia Department of
Health policies.
Additionally, the board voted to vacate a subdivision, know as Brockenberry Estates, consisting of two plats
on Route 600 between Eastville and
Cheriton, owned by Hyler Stanavage,
who requested the change.
During the public comment portion
of the session, two speakers addressed
the board regarding the proposed Royal Farms convenience store proposed
near Kiptopeke State Park.
Kiptopeke resident Senora Lewis offered a petition with the names of residents who oppose the store. She noted
the risk of accidents that could result
from a convenience store and gas facility, including campers and trucks turning
off of Lankford Highway into the facility.
Robert Pfund, also of Kiptopeke, likewise spoke in opposition to the operation of a commercial enterprise for the
same reasons. Hogg proposed that the
special use permit (SUP) that had been
issued by the board for the Royal Farms
facility, as well as one issued for a new
Rural Health Center in Eastville, be revoked by the board. Murray noted that
while some were opposed to both of the
projects, once the board had issues an
SUP, he knew of no way to revoke it.
The board again addressed the on-
going issue of what to do regarding the
proposed EMS garage in Machipongo. Proposals ranging from $250,000
to nearly $500,000 have been received
from Beauchamp Construction, based
in Pocomoke City, Md.
Hogg noted that the irregularly
shaped property would require extensive site work as it had previously been
the location of a service station, and a
portion of the old Route 13 transverses
the property. Because the roadbed and
concrete from the old roadway remain
on the property, removal would require
extensive excavation and fill.
The board agreed to continue reviewing the project. Murray noted his
desire to find a solution that would
cost considerably less than the proposals that had been presented.
In a related area, the board agreed
to accept a proposal by Emergency Services, Inc. to conduct a survey of the EMS
needs of the county. Exmore EMS provider Greg DeYoung spoke in opposition
to the move, noting that the company is
not qualified to conduct such a study.
Murray initiated discussion regarding a speed study for Route 618 just
south of Exmore in the area of Tankard Nursery. He cited safety issues in
the area where tractors and other slow
equipment operate. The posted speed on
Route 618 in the area goes from 45 miles
per hour to 55, and then back down to 35
on the approach to the traffic signal.
Murray also briefly discussed the
need to review an inspection report on
the condition of the roof of the former
middle school in Machipongo. It was
agreed to issue a request for proposals
for repairs to the roof above the gym
and adjacent classrooms.

About 580 students who attend
Kegotank Elementary School were
sent home with a letter last week
from the PTA.
It warned parents of the unnecessary hardships that would occur if the
school’s new gym is not built before
renovation is started.
The total project has already been
a sore subject among Accomack officials because bonds were issued for
the projects by county supervisors
who were told Accomack County Public Schools (ACPS) could not afford
them. It was later realized that state
money had been stockpiled by the division and the funds were available.
At a recent district meeting conducted by Supervisor Ron Wolff, it also was learned that renovation projects, including turning the old gym
into offices and a cafeteria, were set
to be completed this summer. The new
gym would be started later because of
the five-month schedule that includes
bidding and permit processes, ACPS
Chief of Management and Operations
Mike Tolbert told the gathering.
“That’s just not fair for the teachers,” Elizabeth Taylor, a local parent,
told Tolbert that night. “I feel that the
students are being sacrificed for this.”
In the letter to parents, Kegotank’s
PTA wrote, “It has come to our attention that there is a plan in the works
to renovate our school gymnasium
over the summer into offices for the
Special Education Department. As
you may know, Kegotank is supposed
to get several renovations done including a bigger cafeteria and kitchen
and a new gym. However, this renovation is starting before a new gymnasium is built.”
“What does this mean?” the letter asks and then answers. “No gymnasium for P.E. class!!!!!!! No award
programs. No grade-level music programs. No Pre-K graduation. No 5th
grade graduation. No DARE graduation. No events for PTA or BETA.
No special performances like animal shows, basketball shows, etc. No
school assemblies. No Goodies for
Grandparents or Pastries for Parents
(programs.) No Title 1 programs. No
school pictures of our kids. No Pre-K
or Kindergarten registration. No after school programs (Winter Fun Day
or after school movies). No Science
Fair. No “Benchmark Boogies.” (And)
no “Fintastic" parties.”
“We need to stop this now!” the
letter continues. “We are asking all
families to voice their opinion to the
School Board to stop this renovation
until a new gymnasium is built. So
far, the School Board has no concern
about how much this renovation is
taking away from our students. The
School Board can get trailers to house
the Special Education Department offices. The PTA plans on doing everything possible to stop this and we are
asking for your help. We will do petitions, letters, phone calls, meetings,
etc. — whatever it takes. We will hold
a meeting at the school in the very
near future, so please be on the lookout for that date.”
The letter, which was dated in
April but sent out May 4, asks the
parents to call Superintendent Chris
Holland and Tolbert. “We need everyone’s help,” it states.
Parents reportedly have bombarded the central office with calls.
The letter also notes, “The school
has no control over this, so please
do not call Kegotank to complain.
The plan is coming from the School
Board. Our (Kegotank) administrators’ hands are tied. They do not have
the power to stop this. But, we do if
we raise enough noise. … If you want
to stop the School Board from taking
our gymnasium away from our kids,
then please provide your support. We
CANNOT do this without you!!!”

Assembly.
We completed
all of our work in
Richmond at approximately 7:30
p.m. Wednesday, April 20, when we adjourned sine die after completing work
on the governor’s vetoes and suggested amendments, which is known, generally, as the “Veto Session” but, more
formally, referred to in the Virginia
State Constitution as the “Reconvened
Session.”
Gov. McAuliffe vetoed 32 pieces of
legislation and made many amendments to various other legislation. Many of the amendments were minor and
technical in nature. Many of the controversies around the Veto Session are
often political in nature in that they
are more designed to excite each political party’s base of voters rather than
initiate a serious policy discussion. The
polarized times in which we live were
highlighted, to some extent, during the
Veto Session.
Legislation important to the Shore
was untouched during the Veto Session. While the governor made amendments to the budget bill, as well as other legislation, none affected the appropriations for the Eastern Shore, which
I highlighted in my last report.
Work during the off-session for the
6th Senate District begins in earnest.
Spring is a busy time as many groups
and organizations have their spring
meetings. In addition, I will be organ­
izing my usual round of town halls
across the district. Please be on the
lookout for these dates and times as
the meetings help me better represent
our district.
Along with Del. Rob Bloxom, I will
be continuing to work on issues involving the National Park Service and
the aquaculture and commercial fishing activities in Tom’s Cove on Chincoteague, as well as various other local issues.

I am pleased to report that the issues involving the GO Virginia initiative were resolved between the governor and the legislative leadership. I
believe that this initiative and the $32
million appropriated to support it offer

bird and wildlife photography in the
auditorium.

Contest Award Ceremony will be held

John V. Sweeney
Mr. John V. Sweeney, 70, of Norfolk, Va., went to be with his Lord
Tuesday, April 26, 2016.
Born Lowville, N.Y., he was the son
of the late Vernon E. and Elsie Mekkelson Sweeney. He served in the U.S. Navy
for over 20 years, retiring in 1986, then
served as a pastor in the United Methodist Church in Virginia and New York until 2014. He was a loving husband, dedicated father, grandfather, great-grandfather and dear friend to many.
Survivors include his beloved wife,
Sandra Sweeney; children, Teresa
Klotz (Chris), Sheri Smalley (Steve),
Kelli Sweeney Mertz, John V. Sweeney II (Kelli) and Robin Beatty (Bobby Long); eight grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; sister, Joan Ripp;
and many loving nieces and nephews.

husband of the late
Adlene Dize Parks
and a lifelong resident of Tangier Island, died Thursday, May 5, 2016,
at his residence.

during World War II. Back on Tangier, he was the town carpenter. Known
for making an entrance, Mr. Parks often was heard before seen, spreading

community, and his beloved family always came first. Mr. Parks never met
a stranger and will be remembered for
his quick wit, charm, and especially, for
his contagious smile.
He is survived by his loving children,

Bell. He spent his time doing what he
loved, working on the water. Mr. Bell
spent many years devoted to oysters
and comes from many generations of
champion oyster farmers. He had a huge
heart and was very passionate, but most
importantly, he was a loving and devoted
father, who will be missed dearly.
In addition to his loving parents,
survivors include his daughters, Amanda B. Bell (and husband, Dan) of Cape
Charles and Mari Bell of Nassawadox; sister, Lisha Bell of Oyster; brother, Edward M. Bell of Eastville; five
grandsons; and one granddaughter.
A celebration of life service will be
held at a later date.

Community Activist Dies
Mr. Cada R. Grove, for 49 years the
devoted husband of Susan Wynn Grove,
of Onancock, passed away at Sentara
Norfolk Heart Hospital Monday, May
9, 2016. He was 73.
Born in Montgomery, Pa., he
was the son of the
late William R. and
Mary Machamer
Grove. He earned
a Bachelor of Science Degree in EdMr. Grove
ucation from The
Pennsylvania State University. He
served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam
and attained the rank of captain. He
worked for 28 years for AT&T, retiring
as manager of the Consumer Customer Billing Center.
During his 18 years on the Shore,
Mr. Grove committed much of his time
to public service. He was a former member of the boards of Eastern Shore Rural Health and Eastern Shore Coalition
Against Domestic Violence. He also operated a concession stand for several Relay
for Life events. For five years, Mr. Grove
coached successful Odyssey of the Mind
teams for Northampton schools. He was
a member of the Maritime Committee of
the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical
Society, with which he helped restore the
log canoe Annie C. He was an instructor for summer history camp. Mr. Grove
was an elder of Naomi Makemie Presbyterian Church, Onancock, where he was
active in ministries, including American
Red Cross blood drives, and G.F. Horne
dinners. As a member of Joe’s Gang, he
helped keep the church building in good
shape. For many years, he taught children’s Sunday School and Bible School.
He was unsurpassingly devoted to
his alma mater, Penn State. He was instrumental in establishing a Center for
Excellence in Science Education and co-
chaired a donor recognition society in the
Eberly College of Science. He maintained
that the best ice cream he ever tasted was
made at Penn State Creamery.
In his spare time, Mr. Grove made
Windsor chairs and other furniture.
He especially enjoyed sailing and was
past commodore of the Huguenot Yacht
Club, New Rochelle, N.Y., and a member of the Onancock Sailing Squadron.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his brother, Larry Grove (and
wife, Deborah) of Montgomery, Pa.; and
numerous nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by brothers William Grove
and John Grove and sisters Janet Grove
Whitmire and Joan Grove Hans.
A memorial service will be held at
Naomi Makemie Presbyterian Church
at 2 p.m. Monday, May 16. A reception
will follow at the church. Burial will be
in Devon, Pa.

Head Literacy Council
The Eastern Shore Literacy Council, which has provided free tutoring
to adult residents
of the Shore for
30 years, has announced the appointment of Jennifer Giddens as
its new executive
director.
Giddens comes to
the ESLC with over

it administration experience, including
director of education at Virginia Arts
Festival, community development coordinator at the Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission, and
most recently, center director at Cheriton Migrant Head Start.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Virginia Tech and a Masters
of Business Administration from the
University of Colorado.
Having grown up in Virginia Beach,
Giddens said, “The Eastern Shore of
Virginia is such a special place to raise
a family, and I’m thrilled to be able to
serve the community by empowering
residents through literacy. My goal is
for every person on the Shore to become familiar with the valuable contributions of the Literacy Council and
to join us as a tutor, learner, supporter,
volunteer, or friend.”

“If you forgive the fox for stealing
your chickens, he will take your sheep,”
is a Georgian proverb that might explain the way a considerable number
of Accomack and Northampton folks
feel about dognapping.
Those who participated in a recent
email survey conducted by the Eastern
Shore Post were asked, “Should a defendant be convicted of stealing a dog
if that person admitted the crime but
claims the dog was not being properly
taken care of?” The overwhelming majority replied, “Yes.”
“The dog was someone's property,”
wrote Wanda Johnson of Eastville. “If
the dog was not properly cared for,
then the SPCA or sheriff's department
should have been contacted.”
“Of course they should be” convicted,
said Bill Mapp of Exmore. “They committed a crime. Why is this even being
questioned? If someone took your house
or car because it was not being properly
taken care of, wouldn't they be convicted? If they feel there is a problem, there
are legal channels for resolution. If we
all become vigilantes and do what we
feel needs to be done, who knows what
would happen? If you let one crime be
committed ‘because (it) wasn’t being
properly taken care of’ then what crime
will be let off next for the same reason?
Should we allow kidnapping of poorly
taken care of children next?”
“Stealing is a crime, no matter what
the reason,” wrote Karen Simpson of
Quinby. “The sentence should be lessened if the animal was not properly being taken care of. The person abusing
the animal needs to be punished as well.
There is no excuse in the world for abusing animals. Apparently animal abusers
have not learned the lesson to treat others as you would like to be treated.”
“The person should be convicted because a crime was committed,”
said Lynn Bowen of Townsend. “If the
animal was not being taken care of
properly, animal services should have
been contacted. The person could have
monitored the situation, documented
the treatment of the dog, and continued to contact authorities. Should the
person serve time in jail? No.”

“Yes,” wrote Edean Bundick of

Report it to the officials and let the situation be pursued in a legal manner.”
“Yes, they should be convicted because it was not their dog to take,”
wrote Brenda Dize of Onancock. “They
should have called the animal shelter
if they thought the dog was in danger
of any kind.”
Patsy Goard of Hallwood wrote, “No
one should take the law in their own
hands and steal from anyone. Report
the suspected abuse to the sheriff’s department for processing.”
“If the abuse was reported to the
proper authorities and nothing was
done, then there should be no conviction,” Jan of Onancock replied. “If the
dog was just taken, there should be a
conviction.”
“Stealing is stealing,” wrote Rob-
ert Doughty of South Chesconessex.
“There are other measures that can be
taken.”
“Stealing is wrong and not justifiable,” Greg L Duncan Sr. of Accomack
noted. “If there is a passion (or) concern, then report it to the proper authorities and let them take the necessary action,” he said.
“Hmm,” wrote Carrie Jacobson of
Wachapreague. “I think the person
should be convicted, and pay a fine, but
I think the police should be automatically involved to investigate the former, allegedly abusive, owner.”
“Stealing is stealing regardless of
the circumstances,” wrote Christine
Caton Murphy of Captain’s Cove. “The
person should report the animal abuse
to the proper authorities and then offer to take care of the dog until such
time as a verdict could be rendered in
a court of law.”
But not everyone was convinced
a conviction would be in order. “NO!”
wrote Jennifer Young of Assawoman.
“An animal is not a possession. Animal
rights are a basic standard for a civilized society.”
Denise Bowden of Chincoteague also said, “No. I am a huge animal lover
and if I saw an animal being mistreated, I would probably take the dog myself. Animals have no voice, they have
those big eyes full of love and they look
at us to take care of them. I have absolutely no use for any human being who
mistreats an animal in any way, shape
or form. If you want a pet, then get one
with the intention of making it part of
the family and treating it as such.”

Chincoteague recently sold for $7 million, according to documents filed in
the Accomack Circuit Court on May 3.
Wayne Maddox and Mary Lou Birch,
individually and under trust deed, and
Thomas Savage, Annie Parkes and
Christy Marvomatis sold the two parcels to Oceanside Resort, LLC.
The limited liability corporation,
formed in Virginia on Feb. 25, is headquartered in Berlin, Md. and connected
to developers Todd and John Burbage.
The approximately 100 acres includes marshland on the east and west
side of Maddox Boulevard and have
been a source of concern to Chincoteague residents who fear development
of the wetlands.

has been awarded $21,000 from Tyson
Foods.
Rollie Guinn, human resources
manager of Tyson’s Temperanceville
plant, was instrumental in forwarding
the request to headquarters. He said
Tyson takes a personal interest in the
communities where it is located and he
firmly believes that “improved literacy
is key to improving the quality of life
for residents of the Eastern Shore.”
This grant enables the Literacy
Council to expand services by hiring
experienced teachers to instruct two
formal English to Speakers of Other
Languages (ESOL) classes for up to 25
learners each.

is excited that “these funds from Tyson lead us into a new era. We are in
our 30th year of providing free reading,
writing and English tutoring to Shore
residents through one-to-one or small
group instruction. This grant will allow

ber of Hispanic and Haitian residents,
many of whom work at Tyson. Even
more exciting is that at our Metompkin
Elementary School site, where Tyson
funds are providing supervised child
care, several learners are interested in
becoming citizens. That’s a win-win opportunity for Tyson Foods, their workers, and our entire community.”
“Tyson Foods has supported our
Drive for Literacy Golf Tournament
for a number of years, but the award
of $21,000 is their biggest commitment
to the Literacy Council in our history,”
said Executive Director Jennifer Giddens. “The financial support of Tyson
Foods helps us attain our goal of empowering adult residents to more fully
and confidently participate in our community and attain higher levels of education and employment.”
Eastern Shore Literacy Council actively recruits both adult learners who
wish to improve their English reading
and writing skills and volunteer tutors.

Habitat for Humanity Continues Its Mission To Provide Homes

Just after sunrise Saturday, a small
army of volunteers descended on the
community of Treherneville, hammers
in hand, eager to do their part to help
improve housing for one family.
Nancy Gonzalez, executive director for the Eastern Shore Habitat for
Humanity, busied herself signing in
volunteers while Will Gleim choreographed the workers who were racing
the weather, hoping to get a floor attached to the foundation. The footings
had been poured and the blocks laid
two weeks earlier during breaks in the
weather.

Dozens of workers from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT),
Northampton County Sheriff ’s Department, U.S. Navy, and Northampton High School, as well as HNTB
and Jacobs Engineering contractors
helping with the new tunnel at the
CBBT, buzzed about the site like
worker bees, measuring, sawing, and
hammering.
The home, and a second, which
is 50 percent complete in upper Accomack County, are the latest efforts by Habitat for Humanity to improve housing, one family at a time.
Habitat houses are constructed, for
the most part by volunteers, many
of whom have little or no previous
background in the building trades,
but who want to make a difference in
their community.
According to Gonzalez, the families
that are selected to receive a Habitat
house must contribute hundreds of
hours toward fundraising or construction of their home. In addition, they
must make mortgage payments like
other homebuyers. The difference is
that the homes are built by volunteers
who donate their time and expertise
in the interest of helping their fellow
citizens.

aseball fans love to debate what
record will never be broken.
The one mark many fans point to
is Cy Young’s 511 career wins. There
can be little argument that in today’s
game, no pitcher will ever approach
that mark. With hurlers going to the
mound every five days and relief specialists coming in as early as the sixth
inning, some doubt that baseball will
ever see another 300-game winner. No
active Major League pitcher has as
many as 200 wins. CC Sabathia of the
New York Yankees, at 194 wins, leads
the current major league pitchers.
Keep in mind, however, Young
played from 1890 to 1911, when pitchers had no set schedule and threw as
often as their managers would trot
them out to the mound. Young once
won both games of a double header.
Coming closer to modern times,
another record that some feel is unbreakable is Cal Ripken’s consecutive games played streak of 2,632. Of
course, many felt the mark of 2,130 set
by Lou Gehrig from 1925 to 1939 was
unattainable. But Ripken proved to be
the modern day Iron Man and eclipsed
Gehrig’s mark in 1995.
It is another Oriole who currently
holds the longest game streak in the
majors. Manny Machado has played
in 183 straight games as of earlier
this week. But imagine this: He would
have to play in every game until 2031
to break Ripken’s record. Don’t think
that will happen.
The all-time home run record has
been stigmatized by the steroid age.
Babe Ruth held the career record of
714 for 31 years before Hank Aaron set a new mark of 755, retiring in
1976. Roger Maris set the single-season mark of 61 homers in 1961, though
many like to point out he broke Ruth’s

former record of 60 playing in eight
more games. Those marks were obliterated when Barry Bonds came along
and clubbed 73 homers in 2001 and
reached 762 career homers before retiring in 2007. Three years earlier,
Mark McGwire had broken Maris’ record with 70 homers. Sammy Sosa also
hit 66 in that 1998 season. But many
still see Aaron as the true home run
king and Maris as the single-season
record holder because of the rampant
steroid use in that era when homers
were flying out of the park.
There’s also Hack Wilson’s 191 RBIs
in the 1930 season, Rogers Hornsby’s
.424 batting average in 1924 and Joe
DiMaggio’s hitting streak of 56 games
in 1941, all records that many feel will
never be approached again.
I would like to offer one record to
the list of unbreakable marks that few
fans bring up when discussing this
topic. And it was set less than a decade
ago, so we are not talking about the
early years of baseball.
That would be Bobby Cox’s career
record of 161 ejections. Cox, who managed 27 years for the Atlanta Braves
and Toronto Blue Jays, was tossed
from the game by the umpires more
than any manager or player ever. Cox
retired only six years ago, but his mark
seems safe because of the introduction
of instant replay.
I was watching a baseball game on
TV recently and had to endure two
delays of over four minutes waiting
for an umpire crew to review a close
play. Baseball fans know the game is
slow, but the replay review is making
it slower.
I am all for getting the play right,
but for over a century, fans accepted
that umpires called the play the best
they could and human error plays a
part in the game, not unlike a fielder
booting the ball.
The reason Cox’s ejection record is
safe is because managers no longer
need to argue with the umpire making
the call. They emerge from the dugout
calmly, delaying the game until a coach
can look at the play and determine if it
is worth reviewing. After chatting with
the umpire about what could be the
dinner reservations after the game,
the manager gets the signal whether
to have the play reviewed.
The umpires then stand around
while a replay crew in New York City
reviews the play from all possible angles. Meanwhile, a runner on base can
be seen casually chatting with a fielder,
possibly also sharing information about
hotspots to frequent post-game. After
what seems like an eternity, the umpire
signals that the call on the field either
stands or is reversed. Everyone then
accepts the call without argument, and
the game finally continues.
Today’s young fans will never know
what it’s like to see Earl Weaver storm
out of the dugout and rush the umpire,
sputtering in anger at a close call. Or
Billy Martin reverse his hat and go
chin-to-chin with an umpire, each giving as much as he’s getting. Scenes of
Lou Piniella kicking dirt on the home
plate just before the umpire sends him
to the showers have no place in the civility of today’s game.
There can be as many as 15 Major
League games being played at any
one time. As I understand it, there is
one replay crew in New York City that
rules on all reviews. What happens if
there are three plays that occur simultaneously that need reviewing? Does
the umpire at the game get a recorded
message, “You are caller number three,
and there will be a wait of approximately 10 minutes before a representative is available” and then “Jeopardy” music begins playing.
Getting the call right is good when
it helps your team, but I miss the rhubarbs of yesteryear when managers and
umpires added some zest to the game.
I know very little about hockey, but
the other day during a lengthy baseball
review, I switched channels and saw
players skating across the screen with
the fans buzzing and the announcers
shouting before a fight broke out. Then
it got even wilder.
I then turned back to the baseball
game, and sure enough, the fans were
still sitting on their hands, the players
from both teams were standing around
talking about who knows what, and the
umpires were gazing skyward, waiting
on a ruling from New York City.
I tell you, it’s enough to make a
grown man cry, but we all know there’s
no crying in baseball. Only waiting.

Shore Fest Golf
Tourney Rescheduled
The Shore Fest Golf Tournament has
been rescheduled for Friday, May 20, at
Eastern Shore Country Club in Melfa
due to inclement weather predicted for
its original date of May 13.
There will be teams of four, with
an entry fee of $100 per player, which
includes greens fees, cart, lunch, oncourse beverages and awards reception.
Awards will be presented for closest to
the pin, longest drive and a hole in one.

The 2016 Le Tour de Shore bike ride

held on the Palmer and Nicklaus courses at Bay Creek Resort on Saturday,

Northampton Sheriff David Doughty (far right) presents a donation of
$7,000 from the sheriff’s 14th Annual Charity Golf Tournament to John
Peterman, administrator at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (far
left), and Melanie Mason, bereavement coordinator at Riverside Shore
Hospice (center), which will apply the funding toward its Camp Fragile Hearts for local youth who have been affected by the loss of a loved
one. The one-day camp and transportation is free. Campers enjoy traditional camp activities along with specialized programs to help them
cope with grief and loss. The 2016 camp will be held Oct. 1 at YMCA
Camp Silver Beach in Jamesville. Proceeds from the tournament also

Nandua, Chincoteague Win As Rain Postpones Matchups

Rainy weather is wreaking havoc
with the baseball schedule as the sea-
son narrows to a close. A Nandua-Chincoteague matchup was called due to
rain Wednesday, the third time this
season bad weather has forced a postponement between those two teams.
Nandua will travel to Chincoteague
next Tuesday, a rescheduled game
from a previous rain-out.
Nandua blanked Arcadia 6-0 last
Thursday as five pitchers each hurled
one scoreless inning. John Mark Kilmon, Mark, McCluskey, Evan McGregor,
Austin Atkinson and Jake Guy combined for the shutout.
McCluskey led the offense with a
2-for-3 day and a pair of RBIs. Atkinson and Waylon White each knocked
in a run. Kilmon, Guy, McCluskey and
Atkinson each had a double.

Chincoteague’s Trevor Reed had
three hits and earned the win on
the mound Monday.
Chincoteague won its 13th consecutive game with a 13-1 win over Arcadia
Monday. Trevor Reed was 3 for 4 and
also pitched a strong game, fanning
seven in five innings. Joe Thornton
was 2 for 4 with an RBI single, Dylan
Nandua’s John Mark Kilmon tags out Arcadia’s Tah’re Pettit on a steal
attempt as shortstop Derek Bjorlo backs him up. Nandua catcher Mark
McCluskey made the strong throw to nail the speedy Pettit.
Mason was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and
Miles Libertino was 1 for 3 with a
two-run single. Dustin Holloway,
Ryan Mason and Spencer White each
had a single.
For the Firebirds, Dom Semenski,
Logan Godwin, Trevor Barnes and Jeremy Steihl had hits. Steihl also made a
diving catch in the outfield to save runs.

the loss with relief help from Tah’re
Pettit.
Northampton Girls’ Tennis Team Unbeaten
The Northampton girls’ tennis team defeated Surry 6-3 Tuesday night
to remain unbeaten this season with a 9-0 record. Winning individual
matches were Angela Head, 8-0, Haley Potts, 8-1, Elizabeth Hernandez,
8-1, and Claudia Fernandez, 8-1. Head and Potts won their doubles match
8-0 and Hernandez and Fernandez won 8-6. The team had 17 members

Kimberly Wert socked two homers
and had six RBIs in leading Arcadia to
a 22-0 win over Arcadia last Thursday.
Tyra Bjorlo and Amanda Baylis had
three RBIs each, and Michaela Wescoat
also had an RBI double. Amy Dimartino and Katie Brewster contributed
RBI singles for the Lady Warriors.
Emily Justis went 3-for-4 and also
pitched four innings of hitless ball.
Amanda Stalgaitis took the loss for
the Firebirds.
Warriors Fall to Sussex

only its second game of the season
Monday as visiting Central Sussex of
Georgetown, Del. blanked the Warriors
7-0.
Sarah Gepes had the only two hits
of the game for Nandua as Sussex’s
Hayley McCabe kept the Warriors
batters off the basepaths by not issuing any walks while striking out seven Warriors. The Knights defense was
also flawless, committing no errors.
Nandua’s Emily Justis pitched a
complete game, striking out five.

2-for-4 with two runs scored. Madison
Tyndall pitched a shutout for the Ponies.
For the Firebirds, Logan Holland
started the game pitching and had
three strikeouts. Amanda Stalgaitis
finished the game pitching and had
one strikeout. Nyderia Samuels had
two singles. Samuels and Holland
also completed a double play.

Northampton and Nandua soccer
teams battled to a 2-2 tie Monday
night after two overtime periods.
Tanner Troyer put the Warriors up
1-0 with just over three minutes left in
the first half.
Then Junior Gildo and Noah Leffell scored two quick goals in the first
five minutes of the second half to give
Northampton a 2-1 lead.
Nandua’s Christian Esteban tied it
up, forcing the overtime periods.
Northampton goalkeeper Gabe Webb
saved a penalty kick in the second overtime period to stave off a Nandua win.
Northampton won the two earlier
meetings of the season.
“It was a very entertaining game to
watch. I believe the game helped us
improve as a team,” said Nandua coach
Paul Nolz.
Chincoteague and Arcadia played to a
1-1 tie Monday night. Caroline Thornton
scored an unassisted goal for the Ponies.

“It was a true team effort. All the girls
played very well. They set their minds to
scoring more in the second half, and cre-
ated good scoring opportunities that paid
off,” said Northampton coach Tabi Webb.

Arcadia Wins Boys, Girls Track Titles
Arcadia won both the boys’ and
girls’ Eastern Shore District track titles Wednesday at Eastville.
The Firebird boys easily outdistanced Northampton 91.5 to 46.5, with
Nandua taking third with 37 points.
The girls edged Nandua 62.50 to 59,
with Northampton third with 38.50.
Arcadia’s superior depth among the
boys proved to be the difference as no
Firebird won two individual events.
Devon Rogers won the 100 (11.62),
Hector Cime won the 800 (2:06.91), Kajay Lamour won the 1600 (5:09.9), Logan
Reno won the 3200 (12:53.4), Cameron
Vandeneynde won the high jump (5-6),
Jarrious Galliard won the long jump (1910) and the boys won the 4x100 (45.42),

here are millions of things that
people detest. Having their picture taken, cleaning, speaking
in public or even going out on a blind
date are among those intolerable acts
that may fall upon us at one time or
another.
Perhaps rain, the cold, a math test
or getting older could be included in
the list, too. Some hate saying “goodbye” while others avoid shaking hands.
There are even those who dislike Facebook. Unbelievable, I know.
What about when the string comes
out of your hoodie? Ahh! Or restau-
rants that make
you think about
the signs on the
bathroom
door
when you don’t
have time to stop
and
consider?
Some people put
work and getting
up early on their
tally of things for which they have contempt. That latter one will get me every time.
But what I really loathe is Friday
the 13th. There’s a black cat in my
neighborhood that makes me drive
around the circular development until
I’m dizzy. I don’t want it to cross my
path. Today is that evil day, in case you
didn’t realize it. Want to head on back
home?
You’ve heard of a countdown to
the new year, or for the sun-worshiping crowd, that mind-melting season
called summer. Well now there’s a website that counts down to May 13, 2016.

to look like a pig. “Yippee” runs a close
second.
Most women don’t like the word
“moist.” The Huffington Post ranked
it as “one of the most phonetically
displeasing components of the English language.” Really? How else
would you describe a great cake?
Like my younger brother used to say,
“gooddelicious?”
The girls are said to also hate the
words “curd,” “chunky” and “flap.” I’m
not repelled by those. But how about
the four words men hate most? “We
need to talk” or “what are you think-

He was kidding.
A woman said she is offended by “use
of the F-word anytime, anywhere.” Yes,
that is more common than ever these
days. But, is it worse than “flap”?
People also said they feel distress
when others are rude, act like leeches
and tell lies.
I can go with all that. Another participant said “apathy, intolerance and
greed” are her pet peeves.
I really appreciated another answer,
too. “Ask my opinion on a subject and
then make me defend my response because they disagree with me.” Oh yeah.
That always gets me and when I said
so, I’ve been told, “I’m just playing devil’s advocate.”
That devil guy is rude, crude, socially unacceptable, indecent, indelicate, offensive, distasteful and coarse.
Which reminds me I like to say, “Hallelujah and God save the queen.”
