Installation
e•valPal® requires Palm OS version 3.5 or higher and a minimum of 2 Mb of free memory. Two files must be installed
on your Palm OS device. The file BlueBook.prc is the software that runs the e•valPal® system. The file kbb.pdb is the
database that contains the most recent vehicle values.
Install both files on your Palm OS device. Either double-click or drag and drop both BlueBook.prc and kbb.pdb into the
Install Tool window. The files should then be installed the next time you Hot Sync. If you Hot Sync multiple Palm OS
devices on one PC, make sure you have the correct device selected in the Install Tool before you drag and drop the files.
The Palm Install Tool can be started by opening Palm Desktop and clicking the Install icon.
Using e•valPal® Features
e•valPal® contains extensive information about used vehicles and their values. It knows the makes, models, and
trims of vehicles dating back 20 years. By providing information about a specific vehicle, you can find out that
vehicle’s current wholesale or retail value. e•valPal® knows about specific equipment packages for each vehicle, so
you can select equipment for your specific vehicle from an easy to use checklist. You can also specify the mileage of
a particular vehicle, and e•valPal® will calculate the effect that mileage has on the vehicle’s value. After evaluating a
vehicle, you can add a note and save the vehicle to your Saved Vehicle list for later reference. You can also add a 10 digit
Key to a saved vehicle - simply a short note that will help you categorize and sort your saved vehicles according to any
organization system you might want to use. If you’re in a hurry, you can look up a vehicle just by entering the first
10 digits of its Vehicle dentification Number. This feature can also help you determine if the vehicle you’re looking at
really is the vehicle you think it is.
First Time Start Up
If you haven’t purchased e•valPal® yet, you can use e•valPal® in DEMO mode. The full functionality of the product is
available in DEMO mode, except that where any values would be displayed, the word DEMO is displayed instead.
The first time you start e•valPal®, it will notify you that it is in DEMO mode. If you have purchased an UnlockCode for
e•valPal®, follow the instructions provided with that UnlockCode to Unlock your copy of e•valPal®.
Otherwise, tap the “Try Demo” button to enter e•valPal® in DEMO mode.
You will then be asked to indicate that you have read and agree to Subscriber License Agreement GPI-110100, included
with e•valPal® in a separate file. If you have read and agree to that document, tap “I Agree”, otherwise tap “Exit”.
You will then see the Preferences screen. It is very important to select the correct State before you begin using
e•valPal®, as the State setting affects the values that are displayed by e•valPal®. See the section “Preferences” below
for more information on setting preferences. Tap “Ok” after setting the correct State.
Instructions
When you start e•valPal®, you will choose your vehicle on page 1.
From this screen, you can select a specific vehicle to evaluate. Set the Make, Year, Model and Trim to the appropriate
information for a specific vehicle. You can set each item by tapping its current setting and selecting a new setting
from the list that pops up.
You can jump to a specific make by entering the first few letters of the make via Graffiti. You can also jump to a
specific year by entering the last two digits of a year via Graffiti. The Page Up and Page Down buttons will move you to
the previous or next Make.
When you select a Make, the Year, Model, and Trim selections will change to reflect settings specific to that Make. The
best way to specify a vehicle is to start from the top (with Make) and work your way down (Year, Model, Trim). Once the
Make has been identified, and if the Make you are searching for is a truck, you can “double-tap” the Graffiti box and
the Make will switch to the truck choice.
If a particular category only has one selection (for example, if there is only one Trim for a particular Make, Year and
Model), the button for that category will have a thin outline.
Selecting a Vehicle by VIN
On the Choose Vehicle screen, there is a button that will take you to the Enter VIN screen. You can look up a vehicle
by entering the first 10 digits of its VIN. The Find and Evaluate tabs will become bolder when 10 VIN characaters have
been entered.
You can also enter the full 17 digit VIN if you want. Any VIN entered is kept with the vehicle if you save it to your Saved
Vehicle List.
After entering the VIN, you can tap the “Find” button to find the vehicle. If the vehicle is found, it will be displayed on
Page 1.
If you know you want to evaluate a vehicle immediately, you can tap the Evaluate button on the Enter VIN screen.
This will take you directly to the Page 2 (Engine, Transmission, Mileage, and Equipment) selections screen so you can
quickly get a value for the vehicle.
Evaluating a Vehicle
Once you tap the Evaluate button (either from the Page 1 or the Enter VIN screen), you will be asked to specify some
detailed information about the vehicle. You may be asked to enter the Engine, Transmission, and Mileage of the
vehicle, and you may be asked to specify which Equipment the vehicle has. Note: A check-mark may be found next to
the Engine or Transmission if you have entered a VIN manually or use a bar code scanner. The check-mark indicates
that specific component has been identified and verified by the VIN.
Done! Values Screen and Details Screen
After a few quick taps, you will see the values for the vehicle you specified. From the Values screen, you can view
details about Mileage and Equipment deductions, as well as change Mileage or Equipment.
Enter a Key
On the Values screen, there is a field called “Key”. You can enter any text you like in this field, up to 10 characters. If you
save this vehicle in your Saved Vehicles List, you can show the Key in the list, and sort by that Key. The Key can be any
value you like (inventory number, location, category), or you may choose to leave the Key blank.
Enter a Note
From the Values screen, you can enter a short note for a vehicle, for example, a brief description of its overall condition.
If you save this vehicle in your Saved Vehicles List, the Note will be saved with it for later reference.
Saved Vehicle List
If you choose to Save a vehicle after evaluating it, you will see that vehicle in your Saved Vehicle List.
There are a variety of layout options for the Saved Vehicle list, so you can display the information that you want to see.
You can also sort your vehicles by tapping the title of a column (for example, tap Year to sort by model year). You can
sort forward or backward by repeatedly tapping a category title.
To review a saved vehicle, find it in the list and tap on it. You will be able to edit any aspect of that vehicle and save the
changes to your Saved Vehicle List. You can also delete specific vehicles from the list by checking the box to the left of a
vehicle and tapping “Delete Checked”. You can delete all vehicles from the list by tapping “Delete All”. You will be asked
for confirmation before any vehicles are actually deleted.
Preferences
To customize e•valPal®, tap the Menu icon in the lower-left hand corner of the Graffiti area of your Palm OS device,
and select “Preferences” from the drop-down menu.
You can disable the display of specific values. For example, to hide Retail values while using e•valPal®, un-check the
“Show Retail Value” option.
The State selection will affect the values displayed by e•valPal®.
It is important to select the appropriate state. Tap the “i” in the upper-right hand corner of the screen to see more
details about selections.
You can customize your Saved Vehicle List display as well. For example, if you don’t use the Key field, un-check the
“Show Key” option. If you don’t care to see the Book Date (the date when the vehicle was saved), un-check “Show Book
Date”. If you want to see a bit more information on the screen, you can select “2-Digit Year” to display only the last two
digits of the model year.
