Success Is A Shared Symphony
O
nce upon a time, in the beautiful County of Broward, there lived over 381,538 elders, They
came from many other places, for few were born in the southland of Florida, but their lives
were entrusted to our keeping, and we pledged toward maintaining their independence and well
being.
Once upon a time, in the beautiful County of Broward, there was a dedicated legion of advocates
called the Areawide Council on Aging. Their followers were named the Advisory Council, and their
allies willingly accepted the title of projects. They all banded together with the Areawide Council’s
program, appropriately titled the Area Agency on Aging, and soon, there blossomed a network of
successful senior plantings nurtured by the flow of federal, state, and local dollars.
In spite of the storms of adversity, engendered by hurricanes of dissent and droughts of despair,
an oasis of hope soon emerged and was perpetuated through the dedication, service, and caring of
community advocates who viewed “aging in place” as their motto and “no wrong door” as their
standard. Effecting dreams into realities was their prime goal, and duets, trios, quartets and multiple
other ensembles produced choruses of accomplishment that were recorded in the minds and hearts
of humanity.
Once upon a time is now, in the beautiful County of Broward. Our title has changed to Aging and
Disability Resource Center, but like a musical masterpiece, that reaches highs and lows in various
keys, we will continue to persevere, so that our elders can reside, with hope and harmony, in their
accustomed environments, until Heaven calls them home.

Edith Schaffer Lederberg
Executive Director
On May 16, Joel Fass, Esq., Hall of Fame, 2011, and the
Master of Ceremonies for the 31st Annual Dr. Nan S.
Hutchison Broward Senior Hall of Fame Breakfast,
introduced Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief.
Mayor Sharief greeted the honorees, and commended
them for their volunteer services. She chaired this year’s
Selection Committee.
Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Hall of Fame, 2009, presented
a Senior Hall of Fame Membership Pin to each of the
newly elected elders. Mayor Paul serves on the Aging
and Disability Resource Center’s Advisory Council and
is a treasured advocate for Older Americans who call
Broward County “Home.”
President Provides Positive Picture
Now that the State’s Legislative Session has ended, we are anticipating strengthened vigor
among the Aging and Disability Resource Center and our Project Staff.
An increase, in both Alzheimer’s Disease, Initiative and Community Care for the Elderly
Allocations, will aid our endeavors to address waiting lists, as well as provide additional
assistance to seniors requiring life sustaining services.
At each of our meetings, the Board continues to receive an update on the progress of the
Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long Term Care Program. The challenges, inherent with
educating seniors regarding plans, approved for Broward, are constant, but the processes are being refined,
and the light, at the end of the tunnel, is brighter with each passing day. We marvel at the commitment of
our Administrative Team who work long hours and somehow, manage to address the storms of change and
turn them into light showers that nourish minds rather than flood entire beings.
We enjoyed our Older Americans Month’s special events! The 33rd Annual Aging Network Conference
was a memorable educational experience, and the Dr. Nan S. Hutchison Senior Hall of Fame Breakfast
was an inspiration to all attendees, who applauded eleven men and women who represent the optimum in
volunteerism. We can and must continue to recognize and applaud elders, who serve by giving of themselves
to benefit the community.
The Areawide Council on Aging, as the prime focal point for planning, coordinating, and funding a majority
of Broward’s senior programs, along with addressing the needs of physically handicapped 18-59 years old
adults, is pledged to continue to provide the leadership, understanding, and commitment that have been
evident, strong, productive, and above all, successful since our incorporation in 1974. We continue to
celebrate our 40th anniversary with passion and pride.

Aging is a song that yearns to be written.
The words are composed by many authors,
and the melody is developed by the
influences of life. The tune is paced by the
beat of humanity, while the remembrance
is recorded in historic albums that are
everlasting through time to eternity.

Mitzvah Day - Fulfilling Community Needs
I
t is a well-known and documented fact that those who give back feel better and live longer. Many
synagogues look forward to Mitzvah Day every year when they can provide help and services to those
in need. Lois Rubin, representing Congregation Kol Tikvah, brought the Northwest Focal Point Senior
Center back into being the recipient of one of her temple’s Mitzvah Day Projects. The fulfilled goal was
to hand paint plain white tablecloths to give Northwest Focal Point’s activity room some pizzazz!
From (l): Karen Diaz, Executive Director, Northwest Focal
Point Center, graciously accepts the tablecloths from Annette
Lipworth; Ronni Isenberg; and Lois Rubin.

Volunteers of all ages, participated in the artistic
endeavor. From (l): Emily Odza; Stacy Gurney;

Signs Signify Senior Celebration!
In May, as a special tribute to Older
Americans Month, the city of Tamarac,
Rand Eye Institute, and the Areawide
Council on Aging cooperate to display
signage prominently on University
Drive, just north of McNab Road in the
noted municipality.
Travelers and pedestrians, moving
north or south on the main roadway,
can view the signage and be reminded
that seniors should be applauded
as advocates, volunteers, and
grandparents, great and more, every
day of the year.
It’s a Bird–It’s a Plane–It’s Ruth and Edith!
Ruth Haupert Lengemann (l) a close friend of the Executive Director
for over 65 years, often travels from New York to visit her friend and
attend ADRC events. At the ADRC Valentine’s Day Fashion Show, Mrs.
Lengemann bid for and won the flight on the Goodyear Blimp.
On May 8th, the friends were scheduled to fly. However, blustery
winds prevailed, and the flight was cancelled. They spent a few hours
at the terminal lamenting their lack of lift off with a few reminiscent
pictures. The determined duo will rise to the occasion once again,
(weather permitting), some time later this year.
