publisher’s note
My motto has always been, “Be bold when others are scared.” That is the
only way a small business can grow and put down roots deep enough to
sustain itself. In our 19th year of operations, I am glad to say that our
boldness has paid off. We still look fresh, we are presenting our content
in more exciting ways, and we are reaching an audience beyond our
initial target of food service industry providers and hospitality folk.
Growth For
All Seasons
we move into the big 20,
look out for new things
from us, beginning with
exciting, revolutionary
events which will put a new spin on the
way people enjoy food and find out about
new hospitality options. The Hospitality
Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA) Malaysia
series will mark its 12th installment this
year, with the HAPA Regional 2014 Series
coinciding with our 20th year anniversary
celebrations. Malaysia’s new properties
will surely be in the spotlight for both
series, and I hope that our efforts to
support a vibrant, burgeoning Malaysian
hospitality industry will bear fruit as
Malaysia competes among the best of the
local properties and then among the best
in Southeast Asia.
Our new channels of distribution have
seen a whole new market segment
opening for us. Hospitality Asia is carried
on board Malaysia Airlines, and is now
found in the lounges of more hotels than
ever. Upwardly mobile travellers and
professionals are also reading us in stylish
new restaurants and F&B outlets, and
they in turn are sampling the luxurious
offerings of the hospitality companies
we report on. As we head into a new
decade of business, we are also increasing
accessibility to the magazine with the
on-line version of the publication which
allows anyone to browse a copy. This
initiative will help us ensure we remain
an ecologically conscious business by
reducing the need to print more copies of
the magazine.
We are also going beyond the scope of
publishing, with our events arm expanding
on our event design and management
business.
If there is anything else you would like to
see from us, drop me a line at publisher@
wapublishing.asia.
Here’s wishing our readers and advertisers
Gong Xi Fa Cai and a great year ahead in
2013.

The Roti 1Malaysia Charity Programme (Persatuan Kebajikan Program
Roti 1Malaysia) was officially launched in January by Datin Paduka Seri
Rosmah Mansor, wife of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Roti 1Malaysia
is a community project aimed at creating a platform where individuals
and the corporate sector can collaborate to provide underprivileged
communities with good quality bread and pastries from five-star hotels
and bakeries.

he programme is founded by Dato’ Anne Eu, the
Chairman of the Eu Yan Sang Group with the support
and patronage of Y. Bhg Datuk Heng Seai Kie, the Advisor
to the Women, Family & Community Development
Ministry and corporate friends who include Roti 1Malaysia’s Deputy
Chairmen (Y. Bhg Puan Sri Cecilia Lim, Y. Bhg Puan Sri Dr Susan
Cheah, and Y. Bhg Puan Sri Dato Sandra Lee); Advisor (Puan Sri
Maimon Arif Patail) and Roti 1Malaysia’s brand ambassador Dato’
Jimmy Choo.
The programme undertook its trial run in August 2011, where
quality bread and pastries were collected from several participating
hotels across the Klang Valley and volunteers from youth
organizations and some corporations were mobilized to deliver the
food to various homes for the underprivileged.
In November 2011, Roti 1Malaysia received official full
endorsement and support from the Ministry of Women, Family
& Community Development Malaysia. Registered as a charity
non-governmental organization, Roti 1Malaysia works in close
collaboration with the private sector, hospitality industry and youth
associations.
To-date, Roti 1Malaysia has the support of 14 participating
hotels, including three hotel groups namely the Resorts Word
Genting, Berjaya Times Square and Sunway Hotel & Resorts and

11 outlets of Bread Story, that contribute as bread sponsors to
provide fresh bread and pastries daily from Monday to Friday to
60 charities, comprising old folks’ homes, orphanages, homes for
the disabled, hospices, HIV shelters and refugee centres. These three
hotel groups have taken the initiative to increase their bread and
pastry production daily to enable more homes to benefit from this
programme, as well as assisting in distribution of the bread to some
homes.
The participating hotels in the Klang Valley include Berjaya
Times Square, Cyberview Lodge Resorts & Spa, Dorsett Regency,
Grand Dorsett Subang, Grand Millenium, G Tower, Parkroyal,
Putrajaya Marriot, Renaissance, Resorts World Genting, Sunway
Hotels & Resorts, Sime Darby Convention Center, Swiss-Garden, The
Ritz-Carlton and Bread Story Group.
Other corporations that have extended their support include
the Lau Gek Poh Foundation - which sponsored vehicles to Roti
1Malaysia, the Eu Yan Sang Group, the Boston Restaurants Group,
Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA), Jia Teck Industries
Sdn. Bhd, Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA), Sunlight Taxi
Group and Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad.
The programme targets another ten hotels to join as bread
sponsors. With more sponsor participation, Roti 1Malaysia aims to
reach out to other parts of Malaysia and to widen the scope of its
programme beneficiaries.
In her speech Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor commented
that she would like to see increased participation from the
hospitality industry as she would like this charity programme to be
extended to the Permata charity which is personally spearheaded
by her.
In her address at the launch, Dato’ Anne, who is also the
Chairman of Roti 1Malaysia commented, “The merits of the Roti
1Malaysia Charity Programme is three-pronged. Firstly, it conveys
care and brings joy to the underprivileged. The programme also
helps to curb food wastage and defray running cost of the homes,
which mostly are surviving based on public donations. Lastly,
the programme is not just about charity but it is also about
bringing Malaysians together. It creates a community of people
who are willing to contribute their personal time and effort to
doing something good for the benefit of the less fortunate.”

Spreading Joy
And Goodness
he Roti 1Malaysia initiative has made its way to Perak, Malaysia, one year after
its introduction in the Klang Valley. The initiative, aimed at helping the urban
needy by handing out food from high-end hotels and bakeries, kicked off in
November last year in the Klang Valley.
Roti 1Malaysia Chairman Dato Anne Eu said the foundation has now spread its wings
to the other states in Malaysia and is hoping to cover the entire nation soon. Recipients in
Kedah and Perak consisted of the indigenous community in Gopeng, who were visited by
then-Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Heng Seai Kie
and Puan Sri Maimon Arif Patail, wife of Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail. Eu
said the foundation would extend its activities to Sabah next.
A thousand boxes of bread and pastries were handed out to the orang asli community
from nine villages near Kampung Pos Raya as well as to old folks homes and an orphanage.
Close to 5,000 people benefitted from the initiative in Perak.
The orang asli also received an electrical item for each household as they will be
getting electricity supply to their homes starting next month. “Last year, Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced a RM5 million allocation to upgrade the infrastructure
of Kampung Pos Raya as well as the villages nearby,” Heng said.
“Electricity supply was one of the promises made. This is a token from the foundation
for them to start their life with electricity.”
Heng said the other measures taken to improve the lives of the villagers included
building better roads and upgrading old ones.
Apart from the orang asli, nine villages in Simpang Pulai, senior citizens and children
from the Anning Old Folks and Children’s Home, Happy Village Old Folks, and Da Hikmal
Orphanage were treated to the goodies supplied by hotels and a bakery from the Klang
Valley.

How do travellers chose their place of abode? Is it ‘location,
location, location’ or does a hotel chain’s brand standard tip
the scales in the favour of a big-name brand? New evidence is
showing that upwardly mobile travellers are choosing their hotels
or resorts first, meaning that properties are now attractions on
their own merits. It’s all part of the evolution of lifestyle and
living. Hospitality Asia unveils some of the properties that do it
their way, to the delight of their return guests.
Living The Good Life
Furama RiverFront Singapore offers a touch of luxury to guests in the Executive rooms
(right) by way of Crabtree & Evelyn’s La Source® series of bath and body care (left)
‘ld is gold’ can be a rallying cry for Singapore’s Furama
RiverFront. Built in 1973, it retains the best of that
decade’s spatial dimensions. Waking up in its rooms,
guests can’t help but feel that the new day holds
boundless possibilities, thanks to the high ceilings in every room.
Floor to ceiling drapes help the late risers sleep in, while early birds
can appreciate being in the comfort of their rooms as traffic builds
on the roads outside.
The property deserves its three-year straight win as TTG’s Best
Mid Range Hotel, Asia Pacific. As their Executive Assistant Manager,
Food & Beverage, Lens Gwee rightly puts it, “We are a four-star
with five-star service.” The bulk of reviews on Tripadvisor.com attest
to the very warm, personal touch which has become a hallmark of
sorts for the property. From the bubbly bellboys, to the welcoming
guest service staff, the hotel works hard at stamping their mark on
the heart.
Add in a central location, three popular dining venues (the
cuisine at Kintamani Indonesia Restaurant is so authentic, thanks
to their two resident Indonesian chefs), 13,000 sq ft of meeting
space, and a soon-to-be unveiled selection of rooms, and one
can understand how Furama RiverFront maintains its very special

position in a city of bigger, better, faster and more. A special mention
must be made for the Executive Club rooms and suites which are
surprisingly chic and attuned to the needs of the corporate traveller,
with a table large enough to hold a laptop and the minutiae of the
travelling executive, and access to the Executive Lounge where the
guest service staff learn your choice of breakfast preferences in a
jiffy and actually look forward to your presence at evening cocktails.
An added touch of luxury comes in the form of Crabtree &
Evelyn’s La Source® series of bath and body care which are now
available exclusively at Furama’s hotels in Singapore and Malaysia.
Executive Room guests of Furama RiverFront, Furama City Centre
and Furama Bukit Bintang will be able to enjoy the bath amenities
comprising of body bath, hair conditioner, shampoo, hand lotion
and bath soap which contain 160 natural ingredients for smoother,
more moisturized skin.
Supporting the biodegradable bottles and natural products
used by Crabtree & Evelyn is also part of Furama’s efforts towards
green initiatives. The two hotels in Singapore recently won the
Building & Construction Authority Green Mark Platinum Award for
excellence in sustainability, quality and user-friendliness of hotels in
Singapore. More on www.furama.com/riverfront.

Wellness Resort are treated like royalty.
The 5-star resort has undergone substantial upgrading
recently. “During this process, the rooms were demolished to just
the external shell. Everything internally is new, from the insulation,
to the walls, wiring and so forth. The rooms have been separated
into five elements and as such have their distinctive colour schemes
depicting Sea, Sand, Wood, Sun and Forest themes. The changes
include a slightly larger bathroom, larger windows, high quality
fittings, flat screen televisions and room safes. Energy efficiency
was also a key factor in the design which includes LED lighting,
dual flush toilets and more”, said Abel Nelson Nang, Corporate
Director of Marketing and Communications.
All this comes together to form the canvas to a relaxing
getaway. Langkawi’s legendary white sand beaches, as well as its
rich nature tourism and duty-free shopping offers something for
everyone, though, truth be told, holidays can begin and end at the
resort and guests can leave satisfied, seeing that a pampering at

Bedding Down In Bliss
More than a handful of these stellar properties feature King Koil
beds in their rooms and suites. King Koil is the only mattress
brand endorsed by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and
Research. The Posture Mattress system offers comfort and support
so exceptional it has earned the endorsement of the International
Chiropractors Association®, which assisted in the design of the
King Koil Spine Support Collection.
Not content with helping millions of guests sleep better in
over 755 hotels in Malaysia, King Koil Malaysia has launched its
first probiotic mattress. King Koil Actipro mattresses use natural
probiotic microflora to eliminate allergens produced by house dust
mites, therefore reducing the flourishing of unwanted bacteria
and unpleasant odours. It is a 100 percent natural process that
replaces chemical techniques for more natural sleep. The Actipro™
probiotics are combined with the fabric using clay technology,
which has the effect of placing them freely between the plates
of the clay structure. It is a pure and natural process that replaces
biocidal techniques (which attack the organisms themselves).
To help travellers sleep even more soundly, King Koil has
also signed a three-year contract as the Malaysian licensees for
American brand Protect-A-Bed. Protect-A-Bed is the world’s
best selling mattress protector. Protect-A Bed pioneered the new
wave of thin, discreet, breathable and totally waterproof mattress
protectors which have now revolutionized mattress protection.
Protect-A-Bed has continued to innovate and improve
mattress protection, launching the first independently, scientifically
tested bed bug proof and anti allergenic encasement system; now
successfully patented.
Philip Mak, General Manager, Sales of King Koil Corporation
(M) Sdn Bhd believes that Protect-A-Bed products are a great
way to keep mattresses and pillows fresh and clean. “No one
wants to sleep on a pillow with sweat stains on it. One of the
worst experiences I have ever had in a hotel was to have woken
up covered in bed bug bites. Protect-A-Bed mattress and pillow
protectors help the housekeeping departments to keep their
bedding clean and presentable. They are cool and comfortable and
enhance sleeping comfort. It is ultra thin with four-way stretch
so it does not detract from the comfort of the mattress, can be
sterilized at 121°C/250° and generally helps extend the life span of
both mattresses and pillows.”
King Koil also offers Protect-A-Bed’s AllerZip which are
mattress encasements which provide an effective barrier to
infestation. AllerZip provides ultimate allergy protection by being a
barrier to dust mites and protecting against allergens such as pet
dander, pollen and mold. Shared Mak, “When a mattress is infected
with bed bugs, the only solution is to discard it. With AllerZip, we
put on the cover, zip it up and the bed bugs are starved of food and
die. Because the mattress is already zipped, no new bugs can come
in, so the mattress becomes bed-bug free. Of course, we’d much
rather that hoteliers lock their mattresses before any infestation
happens!” laughs the veteran hospitality servicer.
