The Monona FFA had a good day
at the Clayton County Soil Judging
contest held at the Motor Mill in September.
The Monona FFA won the soil
judging contest for the second year
in a row. Braxton Berns was the top
individual at the event for his second
title. Halvor Johnson was the second
place individual in the contest. Mason Hertramph and Kaitlyn Berns
were also on the winning team. The
Clayton County Soil Conservation
District invited the team to their annual banquet in December and gave
them their plaques.
Alex Butikofer and Blake Brainard won the contouring contest in
2014 and came back and had a perfect score in this years contest. They
were spot on after laying out a contour line approximately 1,000 feet
long. Dylan Corlett and Braxsten
Jones brought home second place
honors for the event.
Zack Ziegler was the county pacing champion for the 2015 year. He
was the closest to the actual number
of feet that was on a pacing course
laid out by the conservation workers.
Jay Geick earned second place in the
pacing event.
Monona FFA president, Ryan
Moon, was selected to sing in the
National FFA Choir at the National
Convention in late October. He went
down to Louisville the week before
the convention for practice and sang
throughout the five-day event.
Braxton Berns, David Martin,
Halvor Johnson, Alex Butikofer and
Matthew Radloff attended the National Convention held in Louisville,
KY in October. Members attended
the career show and leadership
events.
The Monona FFA hosted a successful blood drive for the Red Cross
in September. Members helped
recruit people for the blood drive
which had 84 units of blood donated.
FFA members provided yogurt, ice
cream and pizza for the people donating blood. The Monona FFA will
host the second blood drive on March
11 and we are setting our goals high
to reach 110 donation units for the
spring drive.
Members helped with the FFA /
IAS test plot throughout the growing
season and have members selected
to handle the marketing of the crop
through IAS.
Horticulture members helped
with the elementary garden. We are
planning to construct raised beds
in the garden area to help with fruit
production. Members are working
with Nutrients for Life in learning
about the value of fertilizer and how
nutrients help plants grow. Members
are filling out an award application
for the work they have done with the
elementary garden, athletic fields and
the test plot.
David Martin is working on a
short video promoting the benefits of
biodiesel in a contest sponsored by
the American Lung Association.
Kaitlyn Olsen has written an essay about sustainable agriculture in a
contest sponsored by Farm Services.
Members had a successful fruit
sale in December and would like to
thank community members for supporting our sale. Ryan Moon was
our top salesperson with over $2,000
in sales with Matthew Radloff right
behind him in second place. Emily
Moses was third, Martyn Geick was
fourth, Kylie and Keagan Moose
were in the fifth place position.

Presidentʼs Report
Mason Smith
Postville FFA
As acting President of the Postville
FFA Chapter, our FFA Chapter has
been very involved this year. The year
started with the Annual Banquet in
which we were installed into our new
offices. This year’s officers included,
myself as President, Vice President Cole Spain, Secretary - Grant Imoehl,
Treasurer - Kolin Schnuelle, Reporter
- Avery Enyart, and Sentinel - Hannah
Lage.
Summer started with the Big-4
Fair, many of our chapter members
showed livestock and assisted with
setup and cleanup of the fair for the
festivities. Several members competed in their respective county fairs and
numerous awards were won.
State Fair participants included:
Garret Ohloff, Zach Eberling, Dalton
Palas and Cole Spain. However there
were no Postville FFA Poultry participants due to the cancelation of the
event concerning the Bird Flu.
This fall many members participated in FFA competitions. Our
dairy foods team participated in the
Tri-State Dairy Expo and others participated in soil judging, dairy cattle
judging, and junior members judged
livestock at the Clayton County Fairgrounds.
We also sold and delivered about
$17,000 of fruit this fall. This is our
primary fundraiser that allows members to attend events and conferences
throughout our state.
On October 8th members of our
chapter attended the National FFA
Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.
On the trip members got to attend the
trade show, listen to several speakers
and tour the Louisville Slugger bat
factory.
This spring, members are preparing for sub-district contests that will
be held on February 23 in Manchester.
FFA offers many opportunities to
experience other things besides your
regular courses while attending high
school. I would encourage junior high
students to get involved with FFA
throughout your high school experience. I would also like to thank the
community for all their support and
donations towards our FFA Chapter.
(Front Row) l-r: Officers: Hannah Lage, Mason Smith, Kolin Schnuelle, Cole Spain, Avery Enyart and Advisor Nick Zuercher. (Second Row): Carter Lansing,

(Fourth Row): Hunter Radloff, Jade Lansing, Alisa Rose and Brooke Holthaus.

Vice President Cole Spain received the Outstanding Sophomore Award. I was the rising star finalist. What this is: every district in
Iowa chooses a high school sophomore to
represent them. I was selected by the northeast district after filling out an application. The
selection process selected a student who excelled in leadership, FFA involvement, and the
students SAE.
