Improving care, Improving lives
ANNUAL
REPORT
2009
About the FOUNDATION
Excellence network,
ounded in 1957,
NPF is a leading 43 leading medical
national organization centers around the
F
“ The mission of the National
Parkinson Foundation (NPF)
is to improve the quality of
Parkinson’s care for this
generation of Parkinson’s
patients through research,
education and outreach. ”
with an extensive
grassroots network of
Centers of Excellence,
chapters and support
groups in the United
States, Canada and
internationally.
Unique among the
national Parkinson’s
organizations, NPF is
the only organization
with a singular focus
on improving the
quality of care in
Parkinson’s disease.
Since 1982, NPF has
funded more than
$150 million in
research, education
and support services.
The core of our efforts
is the NPF Center of
globe that deliver care
to more than 50,000
Parkinson’s patients.
Through this network,
NPF creates a
community of health
care professionals
dedicated to
improving clinical
care in Parkinson’s
disease. In each of
our research,
education and
outreach programs,
NPF promotes our
passionate belief
that the best care
is a comprehensive
approach that
addresses the whole
person and the full
range of symptoms
of the disease.
From the CHAIRMAN
Thank you for your loyal support during very difficult
economic times. You have permitted the National Parkinson
Foundation (NPF) not only to sustain our momentum,
but to build on our strength — improving the lives of our
patients and caregivers, now when they need it most.
We continue to be the leader in improving the quality of
patient care, and we are even more committed to our
mission.
Our 43 Centers of Excellence represent an unmatched, powerful community
of movement disorder clinical practices. Through the centers network, NPF is
implementing a Quality Improvement Initiative (QII), under the leadership of
our President and Chief Executive Officer, Joyce Oberdorf. The QII will create
a clinical research database of 30-50,000 Parkinson’s patients. Every patient
will be tracked and receive the same screening once a year. Equally important,
the centers offer the best and most up-to-date multi-disciplinary approach to
the treatment of Parkinson’s patients.
None of this would be possible without your continued support. Parkinson’s
disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease and
the number of individuals affected is growing each year. The causes of most
cases of PD are unknown, although researchers believe it may be a result
of the combined effects of many different genetic and environmental factors.
We are convinced that we may be capable of modifying these factors and
substantially improving the lives of our patients.
We are also grateful for the dedication of our volunteers and the support of
our chapters. On December 13, 2009, our extraordinary Chairman Emeritus,
Nathan Slewett, was honored at the World Federation of Neurology’s XVIII
World Congress on Parkinson’s Disease and Related Disorders. At nearly 97,
he has come to the NPF office virtually every day for the past 50 years. His
recognition also honors NPF — the foundation he has dedicated nearly half
of his life to.
On behalf of all of us at NPF, we express our thanks to you for allowing us
to fulfill our mission of bringing help and hope to the one million people living
with Parkinson’s disease and their families in this country alone.
Warm wishes,
Bernard J. Fogel, MD

P
eople with
young-onset
Parkinson’s disease
face a great range
of issues including,
loss of employment,
managing finances,
concern about young
families and social
isolation. Since they
will live decades with
the disease, and may
suffer more severe
treatment-related
motor complications,
early management is
crucial to maintaining
quality of life. NPF,
in partnership with
the American
Parkinson Disease
Association, launched
a series of conferences
for those living with
young-onset PD and
their caregivers. The
first conference was
held in Dallas, Texas on
October 23-24, 2009
with over 200 attendees
and over 900 webcast
participants from 14
countries. Due to the
collaboration and the
live webcast, NPF
tripled the number of
people reached within
the PD community.
“ Months after my diagnosis of
Parkinson’s disease, I attended
a NPF Young Onset Parkinson
Conference (YOPC), and that event
changed my life. I saw that I wasn’t
alone—there were all these people
facing the same challenges and
there was this organization
working for them, giving them
tools and resources to adapt and
go on living despite the hardships.
The National Parkinson
Foundation gave me back hope. ”

Irving Layton
President,
South Palm Beach
County Chapter
of NPF, Florida
“ As a NPF chapter leader, it is
personally rewarding when our
community of Parkinson’s patients
come up to me to give thanks for
working on their behalf. Through
the various programs we sponsor,
we are accomplishing our mission
with a sense of pride—to give aid,
comfort and support to those
persons in our community who are
afflicted with Parkinson's disease
and to their caregivers. ”
T
wice each
week, the
National Parkinson
Foundation’s South
Palm Beach County
Chapter in Florida
collaborates with
local community
centers to offer a
“Surf and Turf”
exercise program.

therapy with landbased exercise

continue to expand
their efforts to

N
PF has launched
the first datadriven quality
improvement
initiative to system-
atically improve care
for every patient
diagnosed with PD.
With a goal of tracking
each patient seen in
every NPF Center of
Excellence (35,00050,000 patients
worldwide), this
initiative is building
the largest clinical
research patient
database in PD.
Our ultimate aim
is to collect data
to compare the
effectiveness of
treatments, provide
a research framework
for testing new
therapies, and create
and share models of
excellent care in realworld clinical settings.
The pilot phase was
completed in November
2009, involving
collection and analysis
of almost 700 patient
records with thousands
more new patients
being added through
2010.
Medical Director,
Parkinson Center of Oregon,
Oregon Health & Science
University
“ The Quality Improvement Initiative
(QII) is a great example of NPF’s
commitment to improve outcomes
of patients with PD. The ultimate
goal of the project is to bring high
quality medical care to all people
living with a PD diagnosis. It
has been exciting to be part of a
successful and rapidly evolving
project that has the potential to
improve the care of all patients
with PD. ”

“ The National Parkinson
Foundation Care Consortium
establishes the infrastructure and
support needed for quality care
collaboration. This endeavor will
harness the clinical strengths,
diversity of care, and innovation
already set forth by NPF Care
Centers. By directly impacting
care in the community, we will
promote inclusion and offer hope
to the Parkinson’s community.”

a new initiative to

majority of persons

alls are a
common and
devastating
consequence of
Parkinson’s disease.
Supported by NPF,
researchers at the
Center of Excellence
in the Netherlands are
developing a practice
guideline for falls
prevention to help
clinicians in their
everyday practice.
Furthermore, they are
testing the efficacy
of a multi-factorial
falls prevention
program, as well as
looking at new and
reliable outcome
measures for falls in
daily life. In addition,
researchers at the NPF
Center of Excellence
in Israel are searching
for early biological
markers for future falls
among PD patients
and for intensive
interventional
programs.
Nir Giladi, MD
Chairman of Neurology and Medical
Director, Movement Disorders Unit,
Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Israel
“ Our research, funded by NPF,
identifies those with PD who have
a higher risk for falls. In order to
impede the cascade of events that
lead to wheelchair use, functional
dependence and falls, we work to
develop and implement protective
interventional programs to delay
or avoid the first or next fall. ”
