Relays made in Europe
For more than 40 years, Panasonic
Industrial
Devices
Europe
GmbH
Pfaffenhofen has been manufacturing
miniature, industrial, and special relays
which meet the highest
technical
requirements.
In 1974, the MS-Relais GmbH was founded
in Pfaffenhofen on the river Ilm (Upper
Bavaria) as a joint venture between
Matsushita Electric Works Ltd. (MEW),
Japan and Matsushita's European partner
SDS Relais GmbH.
In 1995, the MS-Relais GmbH merged with
what had by then become the headquarters
of distribution and development in Europe.
The new company name was EUROMatsushita Electric Works AG. In order to
be able to make production even more
efficient and flexible, a subsidiary factory
was built in Planá, Czech Republic.
The merger of MEW and MEI (Matsushita
Electric Industrial Ltd., Japan) led to a
globalization of the brand strategy, so that
by and by the old brand logo “NAiS”
disappeared. Since October 2004 all newly
introduced products are marked with
“Panasonic” or “M” instead of “NAiS”. Since
June 2013 our company name is
Panasonic Industrial Devices Europe
(PIDEU) GmbH Pfaffenhofen.

The production of electromechanical
precision relays started with the highly
successful R relays, the first generation of
Telekom relay. Up to this day it is one of the
best-selling relays in the world. 1978 saw
the introduction of the universal S relay,
which quickly became a global bestseller as
well. Over the course of the years, the
product range expanded considerably.
Today, relays from the DSP, DE series and
the many variants of safety relays (SF) with
the revolutionary double contacts as well as
PF relays are the pillars of our economic
success. 2012 the safety relay family was
enlarged by the new developed and 40%
smaller SFY relay.
Also other Switching Devices products are
produced, like a BDU (Battery Disconnetion
Unit) for electric cars or customized micro
switches for automotive applications.
Panasonic offers solutions for all important
market
segments
like
automotive
applications,
industrial
and
home
automation, machine manufacturing and
process measuring and control technology.
It is our diversity that has granted us
sustained success over the years.
Our know-how also encompasses the
development, manufacturing and processing
of parts with high-precision punching or die
casting. For companies who wish to
outsource the production of parts, we can
develop and manufacture components to
meet their requirements and allow for
efficient processing later.

PIDEU

Pfaffenhofen
offers
comprehensive service from developing and
assembly of products to design and
manufacturing of production equipment and
a fully equipped laboratory.
Process measuring and control technology
3
Injection Molding
We count the complex and sophisticated
injection molding technology among our
core competences. With the help of fully
automated injection molding processes we
can manufacture delicate parts and
components with or without inserts for all
different kinds of relays. Inserts will be fed
either as bulk goods on a vibrating
conveyor belt or with a metallic tape and
reel packaging or a combination of both.
Manufacturing delicate parts with high
precision using injection molding requires a
combination of know-how, advanced
technology and a certain amount of
dexterity. From a logistic and manufacturing point of view, we are well
acquainted with the handling of production
both on a small scale (several 100 pieces)
and on a big scale (about 1.5 million pieces
per month).
Punching, Contact Rivetting
and Contact Welding
We produce and package punched parts
"from reel to reel" in large numbers for
automatic mounting later on. Hence, after
punching, the parts are not separated but
rewound onto a reel. The next step is the
contact riveting, for example for DE relays.
The relays are then separated shortly
before the actual mounting.
4
Coil Winding Technology
The Factory is equipped with unique, fully
automated production lines for winding the
relay coils. With the help of ultra-modern
automatic winding machines with multiple
spindles, it is possible to wind wires of 18
µm to 90 µm with up to 25,000 turns/minute
regularly, even on the smallest bobbins.
Adjusting
We place great importance on the complex
automatic adjustment process, which is
performed on the production lines partly
with the help of vision systems. For
example, the contact gap of our SF safety
relay - our primary product - is adjusted
automatically by this method.
Assembly
The full automatic assembly processes are
closely linked. Test stations are integrated
into all the important production steps. Our
assembly machines are designed and
manufactures
by
our
intercompany
machine building division. At the end of our
production lines several full automatic
100% inspections guarantee the high and
stable product quality.
5
Quality Control
Our customers know that they can expect a
very high standard of quality from
Panasonic. To maintain quality, we enforce
strict rules and regulations for production,
use modern measure and testing stations
and perform quality tests before shipping
the relays. We have been certified
according to ISO 9001-2000, ISO 14001
and ISO TS 16949.
6
Because we strictly implement a "0 ppm
strategy", we have been able to reduce
quality-related costs resulting from internal
defects and customer complaints to far
below 0.1% of the turnover, which echoes
in overwhelming customer satisfaction.
Laboratory
Electrical tests
We can offer electrical tests designed
according to customer specifications or
international standards. To conduct these
tests we use state of the art measurement
equipment.
Our
intercompany-made
switching cabinets allow the use of different
loads (resistive, capacitive or inductive) and
the tests can be conducted under different
environmental conditions.
Also we are able to test products for shock,
sinus- and noise vibration stability
according to international standards or
customer needs.
Analytics
Our analytic laboratory helps to secure the
high quality of our products and supports
the development of new products. In order
to do so the laboratory uses several stateof-the art analytic equipments (like SEM or
WDX). The core competences of the
analytical laboratory are
• Failure analysis
• Material analysis
• RoHS analysis
which are also offered to our customers.
In our chemical laboratory we can perform
basic colorimetric tests:
• Test for organic silicone
• Test for Cr6+ (RoHS)
Simulations
Also we are able to perform mold flow
analysis to simulate a plastic molding
process evan before manufacturing of a
new molding die.

Panasonic Industrial Devices
Czech s.r.o.
Panasonic Industrial Devices Czech s.r.o. in Planá (Czech Republic) is
the second production location in Europe, which we consider as an
extension of our factory in Pfaffenhofen.
In the factory in the Czech Republic we can use manual, halfautomatic
or full automatic assembly processes to manufacture our products. Also
piece parts and components like plastic molding parts or winded coils
are produced in Plana.
Of course, this production location has also been certified according to
IS0 9001-2000 and ISO 14001 and ISO TS16949.
The extremely close cooperation between the German and Czech
factories ensures the highest quality in production and technology while
yielding increased cost efficiency.
