Tractor Tales
Part II
In the August/September 2011 newsletter I wrote an article about refinishing a 1949
John Deere A. At the time the project came out good except the engine did not run quite
the way I wanted it to. I was sure at the time it was a tune up problem, and of course
being a little fussy I had to make it right.
Over the past 40 odd years I’ve owned six John Deere’s and two Celtrac’s, so I know
when they are off, and this tractor was not right. I started to ask club members, friends
and anyone who had worked on these engines what my problem could be. I got a dozen
different answers. I called two people in the mid west, one man said that maybe the key
way was off since I had changed the crankshaft, I told him I was sure the part no. was the
same. The second man who runs a carburetor shop in Iowa, was the most logic as he
said to me “not being able to listen to the tractor it was hard to tell what the problem
was”. I asked him about cam timing, he said we don’t have much problem with that, but
since I had done everything else, it was possible that I had a bad cam. I took the cam out,
sent it to Iowa, two weeks later I got it back, installed it and what a difference. That was
my problem.
I hope that maybe this will help other club members if they get in a situation where you
feel you have done everything just like I did.
Have a nice day,
Bob Bacthelder

“It just doesn’t get any better than this”
Submitted by Nick Brett
April 28, 2012 was a perfect day for spring plowing- clear, sunny, windy, cold with no black flies.
Brian Matarozzo was the first to arrive at the Goudreault Farm for the annual ECATC plow day with
his 1929 McCormick-Deering improved 15-30 (22-36, 425 C.I.D.) tractor on factory steel, and IHC 2
bottom plow. Brian had achieved his goal of restoring this tractor in time for the first plow day and
it performed flawlessly.
On September 5, 2011 Brian picked up this machine to start what was not to be an “easy restoration”. After discovering both rear wheel bearings were completely worn out and had to be replaced, Brian constructed a 100 ton press big enough to take the rear wheels. It was not to be--those wheels would not budge from their axles. So, by cutting off the axles and boring and flame
cutting the stubs out of the hubs, acquiring a parts tractor with good rear axles and bearings, the
steel wheels were finally transplanted.
With the help of a 22-36 (P300) power unit and complete rebuild of a head with new valves, guides,
springs and seats plus machined surfaces, a replacement rod, honed sleeves, new rings and seals,
the engine was ready for water pump rebuild, a new radiator core, welded manifold, with fabricated
baffle and heat shield, a rebuilt magneto and carb updated with a metal float.
Brian built a new platform, platform and fender brackets (using originals as a pattern) spark and
coaxial throttle rods and a new draw bar support. A new fuel tank, repaired water tank and a pair of
new fenders began to make this project look like it could be finished. The transplanted rear wheels
were painted and fitted with 64 sand blasted and painted lugs using new square head bolts. Following hours of wire brush wheel, sand blasting, parts cleaning and other prep work came 3 coats of
paint and decals. On April 19, 2012 after carefully setting the timing, four pulls on the crank produced the sounds we love to hear as this rebuilt engine roared to life, settled down and purred like a
Swiss watch.
Congratulations Brian on a very fine restoration of an impressive antique! This result gives you one
of the best 15-30’s in the world.
The plow day was a great success enjoyed by many club members, but perhaps most by Brian.
