WELCOME
LITANY
All you works of God, praise God and highly exalt God forever.
Let the earth glorify God, O mountains and hills, and all that grows upon the earth,
springs of water, seas, and streams, whales and all that move in the waters, all the
birds of the air, and beasts of the air, all you flocks and herds.
O men and women everywhere, give glory to God and praise God: Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit.
Amen.
ENTRANCE HYMN
ELW #835
All Creatures, Worship God Most High
GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy
Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
Source and sustainer of life, we cherish the myriad works of your hands. Water, earth,
and sky are yours, as are all their inhabitants, wild and tame. We thank you for creatures that nourish and serve us, befriend, enrich, entertain, and protect us. May we,
who are made in your image, care for them well. And may your groaning yet wondrous
creation rally and thrive, revealing to all who come after us your wise, redemptive,
transforming love; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
FIRST LESSON: Genesis 1:1, 20-25
In the beginning God created heaven and earth.
God said, ‘Let the waters be alive with a swarm of living creatures, and let birds wing
their way above the earth across the vault of heaven.’ And so it was.
2
God created great sea-monsters and all the creatures that glide and teem in the waters in
their own species, and winged birds in their own species. God saw that it was good.
God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas; and the
birds multiply on land.’
Evening came and morning came: the fifth day.
God said, ‘Let the earth produce every kind of living creature in its own species: cattle,
creeping things and wild animals of all kinds.’ And so it was.
God made wild animals in their own species, and cattle in theirs, and every creature
that crawls along the earth in its own species. God saw that it was good. (NJB)
Holy wisdom, holy word.
Thanks be to God.
(11:00) PSALM 148
Please join in singing this refrain as directed.
SECOND LESSON: Job 12:1, 7-9
Then Job answered: “But ask the animals, and they will teach you; the birds of the air,
and they will tell you; ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish
of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the
Lord has done this?
Holy wisdom, holy word.
Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA
GOSPEL: Matthew 6:25-33
The holy gospel according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will
drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body
more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather
into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than
they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why
do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one
of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow
is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will
we wear?’ For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly
Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and
his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
HOMILY
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
During the singing of the hymns, animals will be blessed. You may also bring pictures of your pets or
stuffed animals to be blessed. If you are proprietor of a pet and did not bring your pet or a picture, you
may come forward for a blessing.

OFFERTORY PRAYER
Merciful God,
we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us—our selves, our
time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of
him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
OPENING DIALOG AND PROPER PREFACE
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is our duty and joy, always and everywhere,
to give you thanks and praise, O God,
creator and sustainer of the universe.
We thank you, O God, for all living things and we especially
give you thanks for Jesus Christ,
who gave himself for us and in rising from the dead
renewed our lives and all of creation itself.
5
And so, with all the saints and angels,
with sun and sky, earth and sea,
and all their creatures great and small
which you made and called good,
we praise your name and join in their unending hymn:
SANCTUS
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
All glory to you, O giver of life and author of creation.
Blessed are you, O God, for creating animals to help us in our work,
for giving us animals for comfort and joy as companions in life’s journey,
for showing us the birds of the air, as Jesus taught us,
as signs of your providence and for drawing us,
through your lowliest creatures, toward your love.
Blessed are you, O God, for offering Jesus to us
as the Paschal Lamb in whom we are called to live as your children
6
Gathered around this table with this bread and cup,
good gifts of your creation, we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Send your Holy Spirit that we who receive Christ’s body
may indeed be the body of Christ, that we who share this cup
may draw strength from the one true vine
that we may follow Jesus in lives of service
and live out our calling to be stewards of all living things.
Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours,
Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.
FRACTION AND INVITATION
DISTRIBUTION BY INTINCTION IN PASSING AT 8:30; AT THE TABLE AT 11:00
We welcome all who desire to receive the bread and cup of communion for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to come forward at the direction of the ushers. At 8:30, communion will be served by intinction at stations across the front of the church. At 11:00, communion will be distributed at the table. Red wine or white grape juice is available as each
communicant chooses. Gluten-free wafers are available. Young children and others who do
not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing.
Ministers are available during communion to offer individual prayers for healing and
anointing with oil. Come to the station in the Chapel before or after receiving communion.

Saint Francis of Assisi
Today we celebrate Francis of Assisi, 1226, who founded the order of
Friars Minor (Franciscans) and embraced poverty while serving the
poor. His spirit of gladness and gratitude for all God’s creation inspired the blessing of pets and animals, an annual tradition here at
Phinney. He regarded these creatures as sisters and brothers.
The Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred,
let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union, where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair,
hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are
pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

World Communion Day: Abby Cress in Jerusalem
PRLC member Abby
Cress is recently returned from a year in
East Jerusalem with the
ELCA’s Young Adults
in Global Mission pro-
gram. This morning she
will share a bit of her work
and experiences. Come
with questions—they will
of course be welcome during the presentation!
Next Sunday Is Pledge Sunday
Please bring your pledge forms next Sunday as we will present them during worship.
Do You Want to Learn About The WAY?
Is joining a church community simply about membership, or is it about much more? If you are
new or have been a frequent visitor at worship, you are invited to learn about “The WAY”, our
process of connecting you to a deeper relationship with God and the people of Phinney. Come to
one of two informational gatherings—today, October 5 at noon (lunch will be provided); or
the following Sunday, October 12 at 10:00 (between services). Both will convene in the Tree of
Life Room.
Greenwood Halloween Trick-or-Treat Event
Our neighborhood comes alive on Saturday October 25th for another afternoon of trick or treating. The Hunger Goblin Trick or Treat event runs from 12-3pm, and we hope to participate.
Can you volunteer to greet little ghosts and superheros at our front door? We also hope you will
buy an extra bag or two of candy for us to hand out. This really helps cut down the cost of participation in this wonderful and fun neighborhood event. Mark this morning’s count-me-in if
you can help.
Lutheran Campus Ministry at UW Needs Cooks!
Do you enjoy cooking? Are you interested in supporting ministry with young adults? Would
you like to experience a unique style of worship?
Every Wednesday night at 7pm, Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Washington
— where our former Vicar Elizabeth Rawlings serves as pastor— provides a healthy, home
cooked meal for the UW community before worship together. They are currently looking for
13
individuals or groups who would be willing to provide a meal for 15-20 students on an upcoming Wednesday night.
They ask that there be a vegan option and that the meal be home cooked (i.e. not frozen).
You can cook on site or make the meal at home and bring it in. They can provide recipes and
even do the grocery shopping for you! There are quite a few open dates in October and November, and scheduling for winter quarter begins soon. If you are interested in this opportunity to
support Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Washington, email Pastor Elizabeth at
[email protected] or call (206)524-7900. For more information about who we are and
what we do, head to our website, www.uwlutherans.org.
Phinney Phlames
The Phinney Phlames (the youth group for fourth and fifth graders) meet next Sunday (October
12th) from noon until 1:30pm in room 301-302.This month we will be on a Mission for God!
(add a blues riff here). Youngsters should bring a sack lunch and a spirit of adventure. Beverages and a surprise dessert will be provided.
Confirmation Students & Mentors
Confirmation students and their mentors will meet with Pastor Hansen next Sunday at 10 am in
the chapel.
Hammond House Meal Team Seeks a Few Good Men or Women
For over 8 years a small ever-evolving team has been preparing a delicious homemade dinner six times a year for the 40 homeless women of Hammond House. The shelter, operated by
Compass Housing Alliance, offers a safe place to sleep, dinner and breakfast, hygiene services
and case management and referral. In Compass, the women find an advocate, information, problem solving skills and a community. From our team they gain a healthy, hearty and fresh meal
served with a smile.
And what do our team members gain? We gain empathy and understanding of the problem
of homelessness, we make acquaintances, and get to know our team mates in a small group ministry. Our date is the fourth Sunday every other month (Feb, Apr etc). We take turns preparing
the main dish (the most work), providing side dishes and driving/delivering/serving.
The current team has been quite stable and there are a few folks wishing to move on to other
pursuits. Won’t you please consider joining us? Hint: Parents of teenagers needing community

Welcome Visitors
We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about
our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us.
Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through
age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents
gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you.
Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men’s and Women’s rooms there is also a Family room with a
changing table.
Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We
ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests
may be made on the back of the form and if there are special “sign ups”
you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service.
Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday
morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address,
phone or email changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located
there. Look for the “check in desk” in the church gathering area.
Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at www.prlc.org
for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study.
Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m., and
would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often.
