What should have been the
final battle between some citizens
of Haddonfield and Warwick Development LLC, instead turned
out to be no more than a meet and
greet at the June 3 Planning
Board meeting.
Standing before the planning
board and a packed auditorium of
citizens, Donald Cofsky, attorney
for developer Mark DeFeo, asked
the board to postpone their application until July.
“Our original plan was to keep
75 percent of the existing building,” Cofsky said. “ We have gone
back to the drawing board and
now wish to submit a revised
plan.”
The application that was originally submitted by Warwick Development LLC sought to leave
most of the stone house on the 605
Warwick property. The property
would have been divided into
three parcels for redevelopment.
That application has now been
tabled and a new proposal will be

put before the board in July.
The redevelopment project has
caused a stir to say the least, with
“Say no to 605 Warwick Development” signs popping up on front
lawns all over the borough.
“They’re trying to change Haddonfield,” Anne Tarbell, a member of the Haddonfield Neighborhood Association, said. “The people are really starting to get annoyed with what’s going on.”
The largest concern, residents
say, is that the project will take
away from the character of the
town. Many residents feel the redevelopment is out of scale in the
neighborhood, and that ranchers
and cottages are being replaced
by “McMansions.”
There are also issues of practice playing a part in the controversy, namely, teardowns. While
the original plan would see 75 percent of the original building kept,
the new plan may see the entire
building torn down.
This is not a new issue in Haddonfield. In 2001, John Reisner
made redevelopment a campaign
issue. But, with the lull in construction in the mid-2000s, the
issue seemed to fade away.
Now, redevelopment is back and
residents are trying to put a stop
to it.
“We don’t want to see all of our
old houses torn down,” Tarbell
said. “If we continue to let it happen, there will be nothing left
soon.”
The June 3 meeting was set to
be the end of the issue once and
for all, but now residents must
wait another month for a decision.
“It’s a delay tactic,” Tarbell
said. “The developers think that if
they wait long enough, everyone
will go on vacation and they will
be able to slip it in unnoticed.”
With signs still adorning many
lawns and the word spreading,
Tarbell is hopeful that the issue
will continue to grow.
“Their plan to delay this meeting may backfire on them,” Tarbell said. “I’m hoping there will
be an even larger turnout for the
July meeting.”
Cofsky and Warwick Development LLC made no further comments.

THE HADDONFIELD SUN — JUNE 11-17, 2014
in our opinion
The American Dream...
108 Kings Highway East
Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933
...it’s out of reach for most Americans, so says a new poll
Dan McDonough Jr.
CHAIRMAN OF ELAUWIT MEDIA
he principle of the American
Dream is simple: Work hard
and you can achieve anything.
It doesn’t matter who you are, where
you come from or where you want to
go, you can get there in America.
The principle itself is simple, although it’s not easy to attain. It takes
hard work, dedication and some good
old-fashioned luck.
The American Dream is why the
United States is considered the melting pot of the world.
Pilgrims first came to the New
World for something more. They got
that. Then their descendants fought
for the right to be independent and
continue that dream.
Generations that followed forged
successful, fulfilling lives here, some
starting with dirt and ending with
gold. That made our country even
more popular for more immigrants
T

from different parts of the globe.
This opportunity, the availability for
upward mobility, to make something
of yourself, is the crux of what we are.
But is that American Dream becoming less of a reality and more of a pure
dream? Many people feel that it is.
CNNMoney’s American Dream Poll
found that almost 60 percent of respondents feel that the American
Dream – no matter how they define it –
is out of reach.
That’s not good. What’s even worse
is that adults between 18 and 34 said
that the dream is not only unattainable, but 63 percent said it’s impossible. Even worse, all Americans agree
with them. Their parents’ generation –
who by the way, think they are better
off than their parents were – say that
their kids, these 18-34 year olds, won’t
be better off than them.
Yikes!
Maybe the survey results shouldn’t
be all that surprising, considering the
recession that turned the world upside
down and has continued to have ill effects on the job market. But what the
results should be is a wake-up call.
The American Dream was the foundation of our country, and it needs to
be for years to come. If any one generation finds that dream unattainable,
we’ll lose our identity – and most importantly, we’ll lose these people.
So what does this generation need?
It needs opportunity. It needs jobs. It
needs the availability of mobility.
Who can provide it? That is the
question that needs to be answered.
Students named principal for a day
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
Every employee wonders what they
would do differently if they were the boss,
what changes they would make and how
they might run things. Two lucky J.F.
Tatem Elementary School students got just
that chance on May 30.
The Principal for a Day program is one
that has been a tradition at Tatem since before Principal Karen-Joy Schultz can remember.
“Two students are selected each year at
the School Fair,” Schultz said. “It’s a big
deal for the students because they get an-
nounced in front of the entire school.”
The winners of this year’s raffle were
Riley Needham and Olivia Fazekas-Stivala,
who got the chance to be principal for the
day.
“It was a very fun day,” Needham said.
“We got the chance to check in on the classes, and we hosted the community meeting.”
The students also got the chance to meet
with members of the Board of Education
and toured their offices as well.
“The people from the Board of Education were really nice,” Fazekas-Stivala
said. “The entire day was awesome. I wish I
could be principal every day.”
The day served as a learning experience
for the kids, giving them the chance to see
the difficulties of running a school. But
that doesn’t mean they didn’t have any fun.
“I gave my brother detention,” Needham
said. “It’s not real detention, but it was fun
doing it.”
And when asked what would be her first
action if she were principal, Fazekas-Stivala answered, “I would add an extra hour
to recess every day.”
“I think it went very well this year,”
Schultz said. “The kids had a great time,
and we chose the perfect day with the complease see PROCEEDS, page 7

14 THE HADDONFIELD SUN — JUNE 11-17, 2014
Marcella ‘Marcy’ Dalsey remembered
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
Living just a block and a half
away from Marcella “Marcy”
Dalsey in Haddonfield, Mary Previte remembers the dedication
Dalsey brought every day to work
at the Katz Academy Charter
School, where the two worked together.
“She was there every single
day,” Previte said. “And every single day she did her work with exceptional enthusiasm.”
Dalsey was one of Lewis Katz’s
three friends who were aboard a
private jet that crashed in Massachusetts on May 31. Previte was
not surprised Katz decided to take
Dalsey on the trip with him.
“She was instrumental in the
success of the Katz Academy
Charter School,” Previte said. “If
Katz was going to be discussing
education, she would have been
his first choice as a spokeswoman.
Katz had a vision to get talented
women to play major parts in his
organizations, and she was a shining example of this.”
In 2012, Dalsey co-founded the
Katz Academy Charter School in
Camden with Katz. She served as
president of the school, handling
a multitude of tasks.
“If a meeting needed to be
called with the community,
Dalsey handled it,” Previte said.
“If papers needed to be filled out,
she handled it. If anything needed
to be done, you knew you could

count on her to take control.”
Dalsey also served as the executive director of the Drew A. Katz
Foundation.
“She handled all the behindthe-scenes stuff,” Previte said.
“Her skill and energy couldn’t be
matched by anyone.”
Dalsey was a strong believer in
structure and order, which she
implemented into the curriculum
of the Katz Academy Charter
School.
“She had very high expectations for the children,” Previte
said. “It was an ideal situation for
these kids. Many of the kids come
from tough backgrounds. and
Dalsey made it a point to bring
some form of structure to their
lives.”
These character traits also allowed Dalsey to run the successful
Gracie’s ice cream parlor in Haddonfield, which was named after
her daughter.
“Marcy was the original owner
of Gracie's,” current owner
Nancy Mariscalco said. “She often
frequented Gracie's with friends
and would reminisce of the time
she was behind the counter and
always thanked me for keeping
Gracie's a fun family place.”
Family played a major role in
Dalsey’s life. She raised four children in Haddonfield. She played
an active role in her children’s
lives, even participating in school
plays with them.
“Her love for children will always be appreciated,” Previte
said. “She was the heart and soul
of the Katz Academy and did so
much for the community of Haddonfield. If nothing else, we can
all learn something about love
and dedication from the life of
Marcy Dalsey.”

Craft and Fine Art
Festival set for July 12
With limited budgets and finite
space, many consumers prefer to
enjoy their art in a functional
form. The annual Haddonfield
Crafts and Fine Art Festival is the
perfect place to shop for aesthetic
objects that serve practical purposes.
From unique journals repurposed from recycled books to
stoneware folk pottery to intricate jewelry made from vintage
bottle caps. It could be the handbag you carry or the bench you sit
upon, even a handcrafted wood
surfboard, making art wearable,
usable or utilitarian is a functional way to enjoy fine craftsmanship and personal style.
Located in one of the best main
street shopping districts in the
area, the Haddonfield Crafts and
Fine Art Festival returns for its
22nd year on Saturday, July 12
from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday,
July 13 from noon to 5 p.m. The
two-day outdoor festival garners
national attention and attracts
crowds of more than 100,000 people. Artisans will exhibit a wide
range of arts and crafts, including ceramics, glass, jewelry, wood,
fiber, metal, paper, drawings,
paintings, photography and wearable art.
