15th Annual Barbara Ann Campbell Memorial Breakfast

The 15th Annual Barbara Ann Campbell Memorial Breakfast is
a milestone event for Hubbard House. The event will be held
Tuesday, October 6, 2009 from 7:30 – 9:00 am at the Hyatt Regency
Jacksonville Riverfront Hotel.
This annual event is held in honor of former Mayor Jake Godbold’s
sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Campbell, whose life tragically ended
when she was killed by her husband in 1995. The breakfast, held
during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, is a signature
educational event that encourages members of our community to
unite to help end abuse. Domestic violence is truly everyone’s issue.
This year’s keynote speaker is a courageous survivor who has
spoken nationally on her experiences and has
worked diligently in the domestic violence
movement. Olga Trujillo is an attorney
who worked with the United States
Department of Justice for nearly 13 years
and started her own consulting business to
work on domestic violence, child abuse, sexual
assault, immigration and human trafficking issues. Olga’s personal
survivor story will touch your heart.
Through a sponsorship of the Barbara Ann Campbell Memorial
Breakfast, you will demonstrate your commitment to helping end
domestic violence and provide the leadership and dedication
needed in helping to develop a stronger, safer community. All funds
raised from this event help support the programs and services
provided free of charge to victims.
While funding is down due to the economic state, the demand
for services is up. Unfortunately, domestic violence is a common
reality for many. Now more than ever, it is vital to continue to
provide the life-saving programs to victims and their children and
support awareness efforts on the effects of domestic violence on
our community.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Activities
Purple Ribbon Campaign - October 1-31
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office employees will
show their support of Domestic Violence Awareness
Month by wearing purple ribbons. The Purple Ribbon
Campaign was established to spread community
awareness about domestic violence and the impact
it has on a community.
Clothesline Project - October 6
Designed to promote social change, the Clothesline
Project is an art exhibit created by domestic violence
survivors at Hubbard House. The Clothesline Project
will be displayed at the 15th Annual Barbara Ann
Campbell Memorial Breakfast on Oct. 6, 2009.

Remembering Friends of Hubbard House
On June 17th, Clifton Nehmer, Director of the First Step Batterers’ Intervention program
for the past 10 years, passed away after a two-year battle with cancer. Cliff was a man
of integrity, a kind man, a gentle man. Nearly 8,000 men in the First Step Program were
impacted by his influence over the years. He challenged belief systems in a patient,
persistent and respectful way. Judges, prosecutors and others in the community know
much more about the dynamics of
domestic violence and the importance
to victim safety of holding batterers
accountable because of Cliff. He worked
to inspire other men to get involved by
helping to form the group Men Against
Violence Against Women. Statewide,
he served as President of the Coalition
of Batterers’ Intervention Programs in
Florida. He loved his work and we loved
Hubbard House’s First Step Team honors Clifton him. He positively impacted more lives in
Nehmer at his 10-year anniversary of Hubbard Northeast Florida than we will ever know.
We will miss him.

Elizabeth “Betty” Camp Teague, a founder of
the women’s movement in Northeast Florida
in the early 70s and one of the visionary
women who established the first Rape Crisis
hotline in Jacksonville and Hubbard House,
passed away this year at the age of 83. We
will always be grateful to Betty and the many
women who recognized
the importance of
providing victims of
domestic violence and
their children a safe
place to live. Their
passion for the issue
is still felt among
advocates 33 years
later.
Volunteer Awards
“Red Carpet Service” was the theme of this year’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration on Friday, April 24th. The festivities started with
a stroll down the red carpet for our volunteers and guests as staff paparazzi snapped images of this memorable night. Everyone enjoyed a
delicious dinner, great company, and our first ever slide show presentation showcasing
our volunteers at work. Volunteers received Certificates of Appreciation and a lovely
rosewood pen to honor their service. The highlight of the evening was the award
ceremony featuring volunteers selected for Outstanding Volunteer Awards. These
volunteers were nominated by staff because of their passion and commitment to
serve in ways that have gone above and beyond their regular volunteer commitment.

Hubbard House Welcomes New
Boards of Directors 2009-2010
We are fortunate to have such dedicated and talented volunteers to serve on the
Hubbard House Boards of Directors. The twenty-two member Hubbard House,
Inc. Board of Directors ensures the financial health of the organization and
assists in the development of agency policies. The Hubbard House Foundation
is led by seven business and community leaders who are knowledgeable about
wealth management and related issues and are deeply committed to the
issue of domestic violence. Thank you to the 2009-2010 board members for
your commitment to Hubbard House and to ending domestic violence in our
community.

Community Support
Special thanks to local judges and
attorneys who held a ONE Law
Bowl to benefit Hubbard House,
Legal Aid and Guardian ad Litem.
Molly Tandy and Karen Winston from Florida Coastal
School of Law’s Law Students Against Violence
Organization present a check to Hubbard House’s Ashley
Johnson for $2800. Funds were raised through their
production of the Vagina Monologues.
Teens from Joshua Generation, Livingway Christian
Fellowship Church International’s youth group, worked
together with the children in shelter to make Valentine
gifts for their mothers.
The Jacksonville Department of Corrections donated 500
cell phones to benefit victims of domestic violence. Used
cell phones can be programmed to allow the user to dial
9-1-1 in emergency situations.
WAPE 95.1 FM showed its support in raising awareness
about domestic violence in our community by holding a
collection drive to benefit Hubbard House.

through which they are able to
prepare three meals daily, plus

provide a specific family profile
detailing family members’ needs,
wants and toy requests.
