Lou “Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.” (Job 38:1-4) weakness of humanity in order to restore His greatest creation. To restore in us what was intended from the beginning. His birth recreates us, it returns us to our natural state, and brings peace and joy into our very being. The birth of Jesus Christ is our rebirth. As we draw closer to the commemoration of the The awesomeness of God is incomprehensible. He birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let us remember that the One who is Most High became as low as us. Let is beyond all understanding, and He is completely unknowable. However, we can comprehend His awesome- us rejoice in the knowledge that God desires to be with us ness, understand His ways, and come to completely know in such a way as to be one of us. His entrance into humanHim. This is all possible because God, as great and awe- ity joins us all together with Him, and it brings us together in Love. “For God so loved the world that he gave his onsome as He is, lowered Himself to become one of us. He entered into history, into our lives, through the ly Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) womb of a virgin, and was born, not as God should be This year, let us contemplate the greatness of God, born, but as low as an animal. He was born in a cave. not as the creator and author of all, but as the One who is God, the author of everything, visible and invisible, was so great that He stoops down to our level. Let us see how born among the herds of sheep and cattle, void of any pomp or fanfare. Nothing but a bright star in the Northern great God is because of His willingness to be as powerless sky announced His birth. No great processions, no trum- as us. Think about how truly awesome God is that He is pets blaring, no one loudly proclaiming, “A king is born, a born for us so that He may die for us. For this reason, this Christmas, “let us commit ourselves, and one another, to king is born.” Our God, the Omnipotent One, the One Christ our God.” True God, entered into this world quietly and humbly. May God grant you, through His birth, all the The very God who answered to Job, “Do you send blessings of this life, and may He be with you always. the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you and say, ‘Here we are’?” This God is revealed to us, not because of any power or doing of ours, but because of His great love and mercy. There is no need for God, who, “wraps himself in light as with a garment” (Psalm 103) to be born as a lowly pauper. He is born for our need. He is born because He loves us and because He desires to be with us. The creator of the universe is born into His own creation. He has become His own creation. What a magnificent God it is that proclaims His love for us by living among us, as one of us. The very God who, by a Word, brought everything into being. He who scooped the dust from the ground and breathed life into it, is now as dust Himself. All of creation is transformed and sanctified because He, that is beyond all that exists, is now part of all that He brought into existence. The birth of Jesus Christ changes the direction and course of humanity. His birth sets us in motion back to Paradise. It leads us back to the Garden from where we were expelled. Jesus’ birth lights the path to eternal life just as that bright star led the Wise men to Him. He is one of us, and at the same time greater than us. We must always be aware of His greatness in order to truly understand what His birth actually means for our salvation. “Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble. He comes out like a flower and withers; he flees like a shadow and continues not. (Job 14:1-2) The greatness of God is mingled with the Merry Christmas With Love and Blessings, Fr. Lou, Presvytera Tammy, and John Nektarios “May the Lord, Our God, remember all of you in His Kingdom.” From Our Parish Council President - Steve Margarites Hello All: It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The church is beautifully decorated (Thank You GOYA) and there are tons of gifts under the tree (Thank You everyone) Each year I become more proud to be part of this community as we open our hearts and support those families in our area that are not as fortunate as we are. These gifts are even more special than the ones we open on Christmas morning as they are given out of love for our fellow man. The Star program and the Thanksgiving holiday sprit are the purest gifts of all. This is what Father Lou is talking about each Sunday. This is true Stewardship. We as Christians are bringing people closer to God. We have made so many families believe that God is listening to their prayers. Thank You to everyone involved and who dedicates his or her time to these programs. The homeless ministry has started and I look forward to seeing everyone support this wonderful ministry. I almost forgot the Midnight run on December 30th please help we need jackets, gloves and warm clothes for NYC homeless. Thank You for all those involved and those who helped make Christmas a little brighter for these families. The Christmas Sprit is alive and well at St. Paraskevi. Keep Christ in your heart and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!!! Oh yes!! I hope Santa gets all of you lots of cheese so we can all eat more cheese!! Steve "Understanding Your Role In The Liturgy" "Lord, bless our music that it may glorify Your Name; May using it to serve You always be our aim." So began the 30th Annual Conference of the Direct Archdiocesan District Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians. The weekend of November 1-2, 2014, found church musicians from New York City, Long Island and Connecticut convening at the host parish, Zoodohos Peghe Greek Orthodox Church, Bronx, NY. There was a record setting number of churches attending with sixteen parishes represented. In addition, there were representatives from both the Boston and Eastern Federations, as well as the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians Chairman, Maria Keritsis, in attendance. Threaded throughout the conference was the theme of "Understanding Your Role in the Liturgy". Saturday morning began with registration and choir members meeting and greeting each other while enjoying a wonderful continental breakfast. The opening day prayer was led by Fr. Chrysostomos Gilbert from the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, NYC, and the Spiritual Advisor to the Federation. Fr. Chrysostomos then led everyone in singing the hymn, "Evloyitosi Christe O Theos". The business meeting was presided over by Federation President Anna Dounelis, during which the biennial elections were also held. The current board was re-elected to another two year term. Next, an interesting and fun workshop in "Vocal Techniques" was conducted by Gus Chrysson, Choir Director at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in NYC. A choir rehearsal with Eleni Traganas, Conference Conductor and Choir Director/Organist of the host church, concluded the morning's activities. The Keynote Address followed, given by Maria Keritsis, Chairman of the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians. "Maria, who is not a trained musician, began singing in her church choir at the age of 16. It was her love of her church's music that led her A delicious luncheon was served to on the path that eventually led to the chairmanship of the Forum... In 1976 the participants, such that everyone she entered a room with all of the wondered if there would be "room to eat any more" at the annual conference names she had heard of in church music...there also was Archbishop Iakovos dinner that night. The Very Reverend of blessed memory, while the charter of the National Forum was being discussed...Little did she know that history in church music was being made...Even now Maria sits in awe of the talents of our composers, the leadership of our federations, and the work that the National Forum has accomplished." Maria addressed the conference on "The Roles and Responsibilities of Choir Members", discussing their Liturgical, Musical, Outreach and Educational Roles, emphasizing that "participating in divine worship services as a choir member is a sacred responsibility, not to be taken lightly". She also placed emphasis on a choir being a team, supporting each other, and being respectful of the priest as well as of each other. All who listened to, and met, Maria, agreed that she is a wonderful example, and a kind and gracious woman who truly loves church music. Sylvester Berberis, Protopresbyter of Zoodohos Peghe, then spoke to everyone on the topic of the history and the place of choirs and organs in the church. Everyone was spellbound, not just at the historic information that Fr. Sylvester imparted, but because of the emotion and love of church music that he so passionately expressed. There were teary eyes everywhere, and even some tears Next on the agenda was a "Sight shed, throughout the room. Singing" workshop conducted by Spyro Kalas, organist at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Bluepoint, NY, where he has also served as Choir Director. Spyro is an accomplished musician and teacher, and is well known for his simple but entertaining way of teaching sight singing to choir members who are not trained musicians. A director's meeting was held simultaneously with Fr. Chrysostomos conducting that event. Choir rehearsal followed with Eleni Traganas, and a wonderful day ended with Fr. Chrysostomos speaking about "Basic Choir Etiquette". The evening concluded with the 30th Annual Conference Dinner Dance at The Lobster Pot, City Island, NY. Everyone had a great time enjoying good food, camaraderie, singing, and dancing to live Greek music played by two professional Greek musicians. Kefi abounded!! Of course, it helped having "Fall Back" that evening!! The next morning everyone arrived on time for the Conference Choir warm-up. The choir sang at the Hierarichical Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Grace, Bishop Sevastianos of Zela. The Demetrios Pappas Doxology was directed by Lea Pappas Monias, Choir Director at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Hicksville, NY. The Liturgical music was conducted by the Conference Choir Director, Eleni Traganas, who composed the Choral Liturgy practiced and sung that morning. Included in the Senior Choir were members of the Junior Choir from the Archangel Michael GO Church, Pt. Washington, NY, who sang a few hymns under the direction of Georgia Kaufman and her daughter, Eleni. A mnimosino for our departed church musicians was held, for which each choir submitted their names. Following the conclusion of the Liturgy, there was the presentation of awards and a group photo taken. Stunned recipients were Nick George of St. Paul's Cathedral, Hempstead, Choir Member of the Year, Fr. Sylvester of Zoodohos Peghe, Georgeann Mavrovitis of Holy Trinity, New Rochelle, and Fay Pavlidis of St. Paraskevi, Patriarch Athenagoras awards, and George Strum of St. Paraskevi, recognized and awarded for 50 years as a choir member. Zoodohos Peghe community for their warm welcome and generous support. There is great excitement in the air since Fr. Chrysostomos announced that next year's conference will be held at the Annunciation GO Church, NYC, in conjunction with members of the Denver Federation who will be coming to NY. The joint conference choir will be conducted by Dr.Jim Maniatis of Denver, with his wife, Connie as organist. Plans are already underway for this joint conference to be held the weekend of November 13 - 15, 2015. More exciting details will follow as they develop. We left with a feeling of accomplishment, old friendships renewed, new friendships formed, and looking forward to future Federation events as well as to next year's joint conference. We are very thankful to have talented Fr. Chrysostomos as our Spiritual Advisor, for a successful conference, for the contributions of everyone, and especially for all the church musicians in our Federation!! Editor’s Note We are truly blessed here at St. Paraskevi for having such a talented and faithful choir. If you or someone you know can sing and would like to share this gift from God and praise Him during the Divine Liturgy, there is still plenty of room in the choir loft. Please consider being a member of our choir. A very enthusiastic group of conference participants bid each other goodby, agreeing that this was yet another great conference weekend, and eagerly looking forward to next year!! Federation President Anna Dounelis thanked the “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 The air is starting to get crisp, the wind is blowing harder and we are beginning to feel the effects of the cold. All the squirrels are scurrying around gathering their food for winter, and we are scurrying around looking for our winter clothes. Glory be to God for continuing to show us the beauty of nature. Dimitri Varvatsas, 17, of Huntington, NY, has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, The Eagle Scout Award. A member of Troop 78, Varvatsas is one of approximately 6 percent of all Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges and successfully complete a service project to earn Eagle. For his service project, Dimiri chose to build four benches for St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church in Greenlawn, NY. The beautifully crafted benches will establish outdoor seating areas at the main and gym entrances of the Church and will directly benefit the elderly waiting to get picked up after services. The two benches outside the gym entrance will benefit families with small children who often need a place to sit. Youth and scout groups as well as all the ministries of the Church will benefit from seating in theses areas for many years to come. Dimitri chose to dedicate two of the benches in memory of his grandfathers in heaven, James Varvatsas and Leopoldo Padovani. The other two benches are dedicated in memory of his uncles who have also left this earth too soon, Jon Varvatsas and Vincent Padovani. There is no doubt they are all looking down from heaven and are so proud of his accomplishments. In addition to serving in many leadership positions in his troop, Dimitri has also earned the Triple “C” Award from the New York State Office of the Attorney General in recognition of his tremendous “Commitment” to bettering himself, his school and his community; for his strength of “Character” which helped him achieve his goals and his remarkable “Courage”. Just this past month, Dimitri earned The Prudential Spirit Award. He was the only one selected among the many applicants throughout the district and is now a finalist in the National round. Dimitri is a very active senior at Huntington High School where he is in the Robotics Club and a Varsity rower on the Crew team. He works part-time as well as has an internship at Island Sports Physical Therapy in Huntington. He has one brother, Zachary age 14 and one sister, Nina Angela, age 10, and is the son of very proud parents, Dean and Tina Varvatsas. My Dear Fellow Parishioners, For those of you who attended the Parish General Assembly Meeting last month you heard me use the word “sucks” in describing my Stewardship Report for September. While not a normal term one would use to describe a report relating to Stewardship, it non-the-less summarizes where we have arrived at as a community regarding the prosperity and abundance of our Stewardship efforts. Thus things must change because, in the words of Albert Einstein, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Clearly we need to reverse the trend we are in and get our Stewardship Program and our Community back where we all know it can and should be. So we are going to be doing some new and innovative things to achieve this. This year instead of one Stewardship Sunday there will be several Stewardship Sundays running from Sunday, November 30th through Sunday, January 31st. Also, Fr. Lou will be asking different members of the community and the Parish Council to speak about Stewardship in the Church on a few of these Sunday’s. Additionally, we are asking every Ministry to be involved in the Stewardship Committee by appointing at least one member of their Ministry to be on the Stewardship Committee. Stewardship must be a part of everything that we do within our Community. We have formulated a confidential Survey that is available on line so that we may better know what you are feeling and thinking about Stewardship. Finally we are planning to continue and increase the outreach Fr. Lou has started by calling and thanking the current and past Stewards of the Community as we look to foster greater involvement in all aspects of our church. Surely each of us has blessings to be thankful for. Our family and friends, our health, our good fortune to live in a truly free country and the various talents God has blessed every one of us with that are unique to each of us. We are grateful for the continued support of our Stewardship Program and hope that you will find new ways to participate in the Stewardship Program in the coming year. For those of you who are reading this and have not yet pledged for 2014, I ask that you please submit your Stewardship Pledge as soon as you can and that we value your time and talents as much as your financial support.
