Urban LACE: new green multifunctional infrastructure for Brazil
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture Master's Thesis 2015
Urban LACE analyzes and lays out the potential for a new integrated network of green spaces for the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The Local Agroforestry / Collective Engagement network is based on an
analysis of urban typologies of the city matched to underlying native ecological systems. The plan integrates bottom-up and top-down planning to negotiate social, economic, and spatial differences
in the city. Different typologies of urban agroforestry with native Brazilian species is combined with an investigation into the social systems and possibilities necessary for production.
Landscapetable / Landschapstafel / La Table Paysage
PARCKDESIGN, Brussels, 2014
I was invited within the framework of the PARCKDESIGN event to come up with an installation to celebrate the theme of "from landscape to table - du paysage à l'assiette." My project is a table seating
over 100 people with a working kitchen integrated into one end. A central feature of the festival, the table contains three different landscapes of completely edible plants. The landscape gradient of
culinary species goes from herb garden to garden / agricultural to native ecosystem. My team is responsible for the complete design, construction, publicity, and installation of the project.
De Perenlaan studie ontwerp Gemeente Harlemmermeer
Landscape Architects for S.A.L.E. Amsterdam 2014
As an independent office I have completed a small study design for new infrastructure in agricultural heritage area in the Harlemmermeer, near the town of Lissebroek. Through sections, plans, and
collages, I worked to show the different spatial qualities of tree and path combinations and the impact they would have on the landscape. This was a short freelance project completed for Marieke
Timmermans's office consisting of plans, sections, collages, and botanical research.

For over two years I was the assistant to the Living Landscape Lectureship at the Academie van Bouwkunst. I helped on many projects including organizing the 2012 EMILA summer school and
several exhibitions. I worked closely with Thomas Oles and Marieke Timmermans. One of the main projects of the lectureship was the writing of the book "Go with Me: 50 Steps to Landscape
Thinking," published by Architectura and Natura in 2013. As co-author I worked closely with Thomas Oles to research the intellectual resources of the book, finding epigraphs as well as resources
for the extensive bibliography. I also had a chance to interview leading landscape architects from around the world. This experience sparked my interest in research and academics and changed the
course of my professional experience.
Casa da Mata Rooftop Garden
Garopaba, Brazil 2013
During a work visit to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, I was commissioned to create a small rooftop garden on the coast near the city of Florianópolis. I used this as an opportunity to prototype ideas about
gardening with native plants, which is still uncommon in Brazil. Together with my partner we worked closely with a local horticulturalist to design and build a gaden of fruting and herbal species.
This is in line with the agroforestry principles of my graduation project. "Casa da Mata" means house of the forest: the garden relates to the native ecosystem around it.
Hedge Garden for Urban Biodiversity
Amsterdam 2013
Sorbus aucuparia
Rosa canina
Crataegus monogyna
Prunus spinosa
A work in progress: a small privacy hedge made for a very small budget in a high traffic part of the Indische Buurt in Amsterdam Oost. I designed a dense hedge wall in pots composed of indigenous
species. On the other side are more planters for small flowering woodland species like Doronicum et al. and a selection of ferns. My goal is to develop the concept of urban hedgerows even further
as an offering for urban dwellers.
Living Landscape Lectureship, Amsterdam Academy of Architecture, "Masterpiece Project"
Amsterdam 2010-2012
*Poster concept and layout Sabine Verhagen
The Living Landscape "Masterpiece" poster exhibition featured strong messages about the importance of landscape in everyday matters: health, water, food, public space to name a few. The posters
were placed all over Amsterdam in strategic locations: the Hortus Botanicus, the Theatre School of Amsterdam, garden centers, Artis, the Academy. I worked from a collected archive of material to
help create the posters as well as developing the slogans with Marieke Timmermans.

Vertical mushroom urban farming captures parts of the city's waste stream, using coffee grounds, cardboard and paper as substrates for cultivating oyster mushrooms. The project makes the
process of recuperation, transformation, and harvesting visible by locating it in public space. The vertical growing system uses recycled plastic cylinders placed on the walls of narrow alleys in inner city Amsterdam and installations of mushroom 'trees' in urban parks. Winner of the 2012 Food and Architecture fair and published in Farming the City. (with De Stuurlui Urbanists and CITIES)

Municipalities in the Netherlands have stringent standards for new housing in cultural heritage areas. The Vecht area near Utrecht features historical estates and very old working farms. I worked

as a lead designer on this proposal for a new development
on agricultural
land. My team analyzed the spatial qualities of estates and farms as well as catalogued typlogies of gardens. We proposed
mixed use social housing with orchards and vegetable boomgaard
gardens, a cluster focused on people with horses, and garden villas. The ensemble featured copious amounts of public, open space to be
enjoyed by all in the area.

What could happen ?
Pruitt - Igoe Competition, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
“I just turned eighty, and had my
party right here in the cafe next to
the farm. There are some projects
for seniors at the community
center, but I just like how busy it
is here, and watching the children
at work in the garden.”
“This saturday our church is
holding a big car trunk fund raiser
out here. The strip is well lit, and
we’ll have a big barbecue after.”
“Drive in movies are really fun for
me and my family, like back in the
day. The park on the strip is safe
at night, it’s got a lot of lights,
and lots of people around. A
great place for picnics Sundays or
our 20th family reunion.”
Amsterdam 2011
“I have a flower farm outside
the city. I’ve been coming to the
market here to sell cut and dried
flowers on Saturdays. It’s going
so well I’m thinking about making
a small shop here.”
“Every saturday I come to the
farmer’s market to get the best
fresh fruits and vegetables,
grown right here. I see my
neighbors more often. Folks from
all over the city come too.”
“I teach biology and started a
community gardening program
with several city schools. The kids
are getting hands on learning,
they love it. From an urban
ecology standpoint the site is
fascinating.”
“Before I started the farm, there
was nowhere to buy produce
in this part of the city. The city
helped me start up with seed
money. The farm is really easy for
everybody to reach, and there’s
lots of room for us to grow.”

“I coordinate programs for the
museum downtown. The strip
has become a hub for creatives,
and we’re planning a temporary
outdoor pavilion for museum
activities here.”
“There were no skate parks
in this part of the city until we
started one at the strip. We put
in some killer ramps. The skate
shops in town want to sponsor
a skateboard competition this
summer.”
“This place has great outdoor
courts. I come here to play
with my friends. But I can bring
my baby sister because the
community center has after school
activities for her.”
“I thought I’d give my business
idea a try and sell speciality
baked goods. I sold out every
single time at the market, and
soon I’m going to start my own
bakery.”
“I’ve been making music for
a long time. I used to come
down here after work to jam
with friends. I got the money to
invest in a small recording studio
in a space on the strip, and it
was matched by th city and an
investor.”
“I get to come here to learn
about how to make a garden.
The farmer and my teacher
showed us how to grow carrots
and lettuce and tomatoes. My
class has its own plot. I really like
basil!”
“My restaurant concept is market
to table, fresh every day. I can do
that right here like no place else,
no delivery truck required. We’re
so close to downtown I’m full
every evening.”
Together with De Stuurlui stedenbouw I participated in a competition to redesign the site of a well known modernist housing project in the city of St. Louis. It was a famous disaster in the history of
American urban projects because of the complete social breakdown of the housing project. We proposed a bottom-up plan where a framework for new buildings and projects would be implanted on
the site. Community members could then slowly fill this structure in over many years according to the real needs of the community, thus creating a stark contrast with the failed social legacy of the
site. Our project received an honorable mention.

As an assistant designer I worked closely at Inside Outside with the architects and urban designers of OMA on the conceptual masterplanning phase for Saharan cities in Libya as part of a
redevelopment scheme based on landscape and cultural tourism. My research focused on water conservation, indigenous plants, alternative energy technologies and large scale landscape
strategies for renewing damaged ecosystems. My design design work entailed strategies for new landscape elements, public spaces, and programming the proposed interventions.
This variety of cultural, educational, and recreational activites related to the landscape and was integrated into the architects' urban plan.

Where have all the mavericks gone? To make
Amsterdam a truly world-class city, we need
grand projects that can revitalise the city with
acupunctural intensity – a next Eiffel Tower or
Woodstock. Let’s dream up breakthrough plans
that will push the city to the limits of our imaginations. Here are two:
Zeppelinning Waterland
The Swiss Alps are melting, but the beautiful
Dutch landscape, built with the famous engineering know-how of our ancestors, is still go-

visit for themselves. Build a Zeppelin pad in

Waterland, a stone’s throw to the north of Amsterdam. From above, they can view the dykes,
ditches, historic windmills and farming communities while enjoying a local lunch – may we
suggest Beemster cheese and buttermilk?
The People’s Park
In the digital age more people than ever are
sharing and collaborating on creative ideas.
Let’s build a public space in which everyone
has a say. The People’s Park is Lowlands meets
Westerpark. Lots of people can make decisions
about how the space is used. Each citizen can
buy land by the pixel (5x5m2 plots). They can
keep them for themselves or lend them to a
friend, artist or institution that needs space for
temporary projects. People can post proposals
online and stakeholders of the park can vote
with their pixels. If enough stakeholders agree,
we might get an urban skyscraper garden in the
summer, or a wooden LED sauna village in the
winter. The grid becomes the ultimate democratising force.

I worked closely with the team at LA Group consultants to illustrate five themes that relate to the “scale leap” of Almere and the possibility of the city presenting itself in the competition to become
European capital of culture in 2018. The themes were Culture and Landscape on Flevoland, Culture and Urban Almere, Citizenship and Culture, Culture and the Scale-Leap, and Youth and Culture.
Based on texts written by experts, I made the written research into a visual scenario which was used to make a book for the Municipal Council of Almere.

Sponsored by the Dutch Architecture Commission in light of the economic crisis, LAB 01 was a unique opportunity to work together with fifteen talented designers from all over the Netherlands.
The group was completely non-hierarchical and the most important part of the experience was the communication process that developed inside the group: This Is Not an Office. Our “collective brain
sessions” created new and transversal thinking for future urban strategies. I was the only landscape designer in the group, and my role was to fight for green in public space and within the six urban
scenarios that we created together for the city of Utrecht. My individual research was about linking new forms of green in high density urban settings to sustainability strategies.

FOODPRINT: Foodscape Schilderswijk
Deb Solomon and STROOM, The Hague Architecture Center 2009
The Foodscape project is a collaboration with artist Debra Solomon in the context of an ongoing project at STROOM architectural center. Foodscape Schilderswijk researches typologies of urban agricultural interventions appropriate for the Schilderswijk neighborhood, and maps them on to the structure of the neighborhood. I created the images and maps of these visions as illustrations of visual
research and design. They were shown as banners in the exhibition. The project is taking the next step with the help of STROOM and partners in the Schilderswijk in order to realize the interventions.

As researcher I worked on a proprietary design analysis methodology for DS Landscape Architects. ISLA determines specific parameters for each site on a multitude of levels, constructing the
physical, historical, and ecological narrative of place which creates a framework for sustainable planning. ISLA begins with transversal research about place gathered into families of information:
geography, culture and ecology. Subgroups range from periods of archeology, to population demographics, economic dynamics and specific biotopes. The data is accumulated in graphic documents

DS was invited by urbanists and officials in France to create a large scale regional planning and development project for the department of les Landes south of Bordeaux. Our analysis and plan,
made in collaboration with UAPS urbanists in Paris, features the landscape as the carrier of developmental schemes ranging from infrastructure and housing to tourism and new industrial activities.
I was responsible for research for the project and liaised directly with the clients. We developed detailed matrices as well as cartographic analyses for each landscape zone which provided strategic
conclusions in terms of urbanism, landscape, tourism, infrastructure, and economic activities.

EEN ARCHEOLOGISCHE SITE OMGEVEN DOOR GROENE STADSKAMERS
Large scale park design within the context of OMA's masterplan for the Homeruskwartier in Almere. I worked within DS on the conceptual development and modelling of the park and the "groene
kamers" which are different typologies of green public spaces. I created spatially accurate renderings while working closely with the project architects. The irregular strip of park is a sensitive site
that contains archeological remnants from the last ice age. Our design preserves these sites while inserting a vibrant wild landscape reminiscent of ancient marshlands through the urban core.
EELLs at the Krabbeplas, Vlaardingen
SKOR and Bureau Venhuizen, Rotterdam 2007
Based on my MA thesis work at the University of the Arts London, I was invited to investigate new ways of re-using agricultural landscapes in the Netherlands. The result was a modular architectural
system called EELLs made of biodegradable plastic tubing filled with organic materials. The tubes functioned as lounging spaces and were inoculated with mushroom spores. Over several weeks, the
spores spread through the straw and earth while the bioplastics broke down, also helping to clean the polluted soil on the site. The project goals were realized by finding new uses for agricultural spaces
and addressing recreation, food production, bioremediation and ecological cycles. Featured in the book Bracket 01: On Farming as well as at the International Federation of Landscape Architecture
Conference in Zurich, 2012.
Magazine Illustrations
Amsterdam 2006
Before becoming involved with landscape architecture at the Academie van Bouwkunst and working in firms such as DS / Inside Outside, I created many freelance illustrations for magazines in the
Netherlands and France. I often used architectural motifs and spatial studies to render concepts relating to these themes.
EELLs: Ecologically Emergent Leisure Landscapes
London and France 2002-04
I completed a Master's of Design for the Environment at Chelsea College London, part of the University of the Arts London system. The program combined teaching from architects, artists, and
industrial designers. I was able to explore my ideas about bringing ecological cycles into design work and making them tactile and visible. For my final project I developed a system of flexible,
biodegradable architecture based on agricultural materials like hay, straw, and grass. The system uses these materials inside biodegradeable plastic casing. The soft playful tubes can take on a variety
of forms, creating large scale outdoor furniture or flexible shelters.
Vertical Gardens with Patrick Blanc
Paris 2003
While I lived in Paris in 2003-2004 I had the opportunity to work on two private vertical gardens designed by botanical researcher and artist Patrick Blanc. He is famous for travelling the world
to find plants that can thrive in these vertical systems. I was able to learn about botanics and building and help design, source, construct and plant two gardens.
Xeriscape garden for private client
Santa Fe, USA 1999
Before moving to Europe in 2000 I had my own design and build gardening company based in New Mexico. I worked closely with architects and private clients to design and execute small scale
gardens using native species and requiring little water. I became very familiar with native Southwestern species as well as permaculture and xeriscaping techniques. The garden above was completely
realized by hand with my partner. We were also responsible for the maintenance of several prestigious art gallery sculpture gardens. In total I designed and built about ten small private gardens.
Monsoon Arsenal
Plan B Evolving Arts, Santa Fe USA 2001
The Monsoon Arsenal is a public art installation designed around the idea of contemplating security in the desert. At Plan B Evolving Arts center in Santa Fe, New Mexico near the Los Alamos
nuclear laboratories, I created a xeriscape garden whose forms reflected the symbolism of technology while embodying ecological principles about water in the desert. Target shaped drainage
pools collected sparse desert rainwater while earthen warheads were filled with fertilizer and seeds, creating an oasis of blooming desert flowers. (Collaborators Nik Bertulis and Aysha Massel)
Clam House
private commission, South Carolina USA 2000
The Clam House is an experiment at the intersection of artistic practice and architectual thinking. After a year spent travelling around the United States learning ecological building techniques, I
received a commission to create a small house using only the materials available on a specific site. The clam has a post and beam structure made from oak and pine trees. The walls are straw
bale and rammed earth construction covered with clay plaster and river sand. Called the "Clam" because of its shape, the house received a green roof of native grasses. Instead of starting from a
construction plan, the house emerged from an intimate dialogue with the site. (Collaborator Nik Bertulis)
