Swinburne University of Technology | Graduations Ceremony Program | December 2015
Message from the
Vice-Chancellor
I am delighted to welcome you here for this graduation ceremony.
Well done to all who are graduating today
for successfully completing your course.
At this time we must also acknowledge the
Swinburne academic and professional staff
who made your learning experience possible,
as well as parents, spouses, siblings,
partners and friends whose encouragement
has played a crucial role in your success.
Today your graduation allows us to celebrate
your achievements. You have fulfilled the
requirements of a demanding course of
study with focus and discipline and your
reward is an excellent education.
Such an education is all the more important
today because of the need to respond
to a rapidly changing world. Within our
knowledge-based society, many people
are engaged in ‘knowledge-based’ work,
across a range of fields and disciplines.
The achievement of high quality education
and training positions you to attain greater
prosperity and participate more fully in a
dynamic knowledge-based global economy.
Swinburne is consistently named as one of
the top universities in the world according
to the prestigious Academic Ranking of
World Universities. Therefore, I hope you take
pride in knowing that you graduate from
Swinburne with a high-quality education,
obtained from a world-ranked university.
I strongly encourage all of you who graduate
today to address the new challenges that
face your community and make a positive
contribution. I urge you to seize these
opportunities and help lead our society
into a promising future.
At Swinburne we encourage our students
to embrace the notion that we are all
learners for life. And so, I anticipate that your
graduation will not represent an end-point
to your educational adventures. We look
forward to welcoming you back to Swinburne
in the future, either in-person or through one
of many online learning opportunities, to help
you further your knowledge.
We are also delighted to welcome you as
Swinburne alumni and will take pride in
hearing of your achievements.
I sincerely wish you the very best for the
future and, wherever life adventures take
you, invite you to stay in touch with your
Swinburne community.

History of the university
The Swinburnes lived for many generations
in Northumberland, in the north of England.
In early times, the family owned a castle on
the banks of the Swin Burn, the brook of the
boars. By 1245 the Swinburne coat of arms
was ‘Gules: three boars heads argent’.
The arms
George Swinburne arrived in Melbourne in
1886, aged twenty-five. His early days in
Melbourne were spent setting up gas plants
and bringing gas-light to the cities and towns.
As his business stature increased, he entered
State Parliament and became a minister.
The crest
Swinburne was established as the Eastern
Suburbs Technical College by George
Swinburne and the first students were
enrolled in 1909, when classes began in
carpentry, plumbing and blacksmithing.
In 1913 the institution changed its name
to Swinburne Technical College, to
commemorate the Honourable George
Swinburne. Soon afterwards, a boys’ junior
technical school and the first girls’ technical
school were established.
The motto
Following an extensive reorganisation of
advanced education in Victoria in the late
1970s, Swinburne was given the power to
grant bachelor degrees. The first of these was
awarded at a conferring ceremony held on
21 May 1981 at the Camberwell Civic Centre.
In universities, a mace is used as a symbol
of institutional authority and it is carried
in procession before the Chancellor as
a symbolic weapon of protection. The
ceremonial items of the office of the
Chancellor of Swinburne University were
designed by Emeritus Professor Helmut
Lueckenhausen, former Pro Vice-Chancellor,
Internationalisation. Fabricated from
Queensland silky oak, sterling silver and gold,
the mace has eight facets resolving as an
open silver finial and crown which contains
a carving of the rampant boar from the
Swinburne coat of arms. The chair also has
eight divisions on the seat and back with an
engraved silver boar and the Southern Cross
on the upper back. Artists and craftspeople
involved in the project with the designer
were Ian Higgs, cabinet maker, Geoffrey
Dunne, Swinburne design graduate, Sue
Wraight, netsuke carver and Hendrik Forster
and Marion Marshall, silversmiths. Civic
contributions made towards the purchase
of these items included the former City of
Prahran for the University for the Mace, the
former City of Hawthorn for the Chancellor’s
Chair and the former Shire of Lillydale for the
Chancellor’s Gown.
In 1992, Swinburne achieved university
status with the passage by the Parliament
of Victoria of the Swinburne University
of Technology Act. This marked not only
Swinburne’s distinguished history as
a provider of further education, but the
beginning of a new period of growth and
innovation for Swinburne.
In recent years, Swinburne has progressed
to become one of the world’s leading
research-intensive teaching universities and
a leader in online education, expanding the
educational opportunities available to a new
generation of learners.
Swinburne’s emphasis is on high-quality,
engaged teaching and research in science,
technology and innovation – teaching and
research that makes a difference in the lives
of individuals and contributes to national
economic and social objectives.
Swinburne holds a unique place among
educational institutions in Australia in the link
that persists between it and the founder and
his family. The conferring of a modification
of the family’s coat of arms preserves and
strengthens that link.

The basic colours of red and white, and
the cinquefoils charged on the shield,
commemorate the arms of the Swinburne
family.
The demi-Boar and the cinquefoil perpetuate
the Swinburne connection; the book is
symbolic of learning.
The College of Arms’ translation of the motto
is: Achievement through learning.
The flag

Swinburne Research
Feifei Chen
Swinburne has consistently pursued a policy of ensuring quality
and critical mass by investing resources in areas of research
concentration. Swinburne actively encourages and values its
international and industry connections which enrich and enhance
the research efforts and careers of our academic staff and
students alike.
The graduates listed below have each made a valuable contribution
to Swinburne and their respective fields of research.
Graduates for awards from Swinburne Research will be presented
by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International Research Engagement),
Professor Ajay Kapoor.
Doctor of Philosophy
Yaman Sami Shareef Al-Kamaki
Thesis title: Strengthening of fire-damaged reinforced concrete
columns using carbon fibre reinforced polymer fabrics
The exposure of concrete members to fire can result in permanent
loss of strength and stiffness. One way of reinstating the strength of
fire-damaged members is to repair them using carbon fibre wrapping.
Dr Al-Kamaki’s thesis presents an experimental and theoretical
assessment of reinforced concrete columns damaged by heating and
repaired using carbon fibre. Detailed experiments were undertaken
to expose loaded reinforced concrete columns to heating prior to
repairing them with carbon fibre. The strength was then determined
experimentally. This experimental process was simulated using
advance finite element modelling to give a better understanding
of key aspects of behaviour.
Thesis title: Automated support for performance and energy
evaluation for cloud applications
Dr Chen’s thesis investigated the energy consumption of applications
deployed in cloud environments. The research produced a set of
novel techniques that can be applied to automatically determine
energy-efficient cloud application deployment strategies. The
outcomes significantly reduce the time and efforts that software
engineers spend on the deployment, load testing and performance
testing of cloud applications.
Helga Denes
Thesis title: A wide-field investigation into the HI content of galaxies
Dr Denes’ thesis investigated how the stellar content of galaxies relate
to their gaseous component and the mechanisms that can transform
a gas rich galaxy into a gas poor galaxy. The atomic hydrogen gas in
galaxies is important, because it is the fuel for future star formation
and so it is the lifeblood of a galaxy. The thesis provides new insight
into gas poor galaxies and the mechanisms that are responsible for
gas removal in galaxy groups.
Daniel Thomas Hayes
Thesis title: Nonlinear instability of wavy shear flow
Dr Hayes’ thesis is concerned with the mathematical description
of stadium-sized rolls that form in the upper ocean. The rolls result
from the interaction of surface waves with an ocean current. Known
as Langmuir circulation, the rolls help to mix the ocean and form
a layer about 100m deep. Since this layer stores an enormous
amount of heat that affects weather and climate, of key interest is
to understand the evolution of Langmuir circulation and the role it
plays in the layer’s formation. The thesis is thus a systematic study
of Langmuir circulation and the instability that gives rise to them.
Elisa Boera
Yakubu Ibrahim
Thesis title: The thermal state of the intergalactic medium nine to
twelve billion years ago
Thesis title: Development and evaluation of a flight collision avoidance
system in a free flight environment
Dr Boera’s research presents an investigation of the thermal
state of the tenuous gas between galaxies, called the intergalactic
medium. It is focused on measuring the temperature evolution of
this cosmic gas during the second reionization phase of the universe
that happened between nine and twelve billion years ago. During
this event the radiation emitted by powerful objects, called quasars,
profoundly changed the properties of the intergalactic medium that,
in turn, determine the conditions for the formation and evolution of
the structures that populate our universe. The measurements show
evidence for this second reionization and track its final stages.
Dr Ibrahim developed and evaluated a collision avoidance system
that complements the current Traffic Conflict Avoidance System
(TCAS) within supports pilots in environments not fully managed by
Air Traffic Controllers. His study extends the understanding of the
separation of aircraft by pilots, through interactive visualisation of
flight constraints that enhance situation awareness, conflict detection
and resolution, and decision making. His contributions have provided
important insights into conflict management and policy for the air
transportation industry.

Ejikeme Olikaeze Kenneth Igbo
Avinash Vasant Karpe
Thesis title: Managing demand variability in complex sociotechnical
systems: a case for resilience in airline operations control
Thesis title: Biodegradation of winery biomass wastes by developing a
symbiotic multi-fungal consortium
Dr Igbo investigated how airline operations controllers respond
to uncertainties relating to tactical control demands, and the
strategies they employ when renegotiating plans across multiple,
semi-autonomous centres of control. Dr Igbo’s findings elucidate
how decision-making architectures evolve during dynamic
renegotiation of decision authority. The thesis further proffers
knowledge on how severity of demand shape the way controllers
perceive and interpret rule prescriptions, and the way they go about
matching ‘a changing set of contingent rules to a changing set of
situations’. From the perspective of Cognitive Systems Engineering,
the findings have promising implications for enhancing cognitive
interactions that involve humans and machines in complex
work systems.
Australia is sixth largest global wine grape producer with an annual
production of 1.75 million metric tonnes (2012-13). Due to poor
digestibility and minor phenolic toxicity, winery biomass waste
has limited use as either animal feed or compost fertilizer. Fungi
are considered as efficient biomass degraders. The results of Dr
Karpe’s study showed that simple pre-treatment process such as
autoclaving, combined with mixed fungal consortium application
and metabolomics, generated substantial biomass degradation.
This degradation generated numerous metabolites such as sugars,
alcohols and fatty acids which can be applied to generate biofuel
molecules such as bioethanol and medicinally important metabolites.
Muhammad Awais Javed
Thesis title: Factors affecting microbiologically influenced corrosion
of carbon steels in lab-based studies
Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is the deterioration of
materials caused by the presence and activity of microorganisms.
The industries mostly affected by MIC include maritime, chemical
processing, nuclear power, oil and gas production, and sprinkler
water systems. In Dr Javed’s research, laboratory-based studies
have been undertaken to investigate the effect of different
metallurgical, chemical and microbiological factors on the initial
bacterial attachment and subsequent MIC of carbon steels.
The findings from this research will help to design more rigorous
lab-based tests of MIC that can be used to support the development
of mitigation strategies for MIC attack in actual field conditions.
Muhammad Rakib Mansur
Thesis title: Deposition and characterization of a coating from calcium
phosphate and titanium alloy on austenitic stainless steel
Composite coatings made of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) and
hydroxyapatite (HA) can enhance the corrosion resistance of austenitic
stainless steel used for prosthetic applications. Different techniques
have already been adopted to produce pure HA or composite coatings
on different substrates for biomedical applications. Dr Mansur’s
research yielded deposition of composite coatings and material from
HA and Ti-6Al-4V on austenitic stainless steel by using laser-assisted
deposition technique. The study incorporates microstructural,
chemical and mechanical characterization of the developed composite
coating. The research also covers temperature and cooling rate
determination for the relationship establishment between different
microstructural and mechanical parameters with those two.
Ahmad Zurisman Mohd Ali
Leila Karimi
Thesis title: Performance of geopolymer concrete in fire
Thesis title: Model-based reliability and validity of measurement
models using structural equation modeling
Dr Mohd Ali’s study developed high strength geopolymer concrete
and assessed its performance in fire. Geopolymer concrete is a
cementless concrete which utilises waste from coal power plant –
fly ash. Manufacture of geopolymer concrete is responsible for
lower carbon dioxide emission than conventional concrete due to the
replacement of cement with fly ash for concrete binder. Large scale
high strength geopolymer concrete wall panels were tested under
the most severe fire simulating a hydrocarbon fire. Findings from this
study make a substantive contribution in producing an environmental
friendly concrete with good fire resistance.
Reliability of a measurement tool is the degree to which an
assessment tool produces stable and consistent results while
validity refers to how well a test measures what it is purported to
measure. Dr Karimi’s research provides important new applications of
model-based reliability and validity in bifactor and reflective-formative
measurement models, using structural equation modelling. In addition,
the application of Bentler’s covariate-dependent reliability for
reliability assessments and demonstrating common method bias
are demonstrated for the first time. The thesis has demonstrated
the need for careful identification of the nature of constructs in
measurements tools. The findings of this thesis have made a
contribution to the literature in this area.

Arezoo Motamed Ektesabi
Priyamvada Venugopalan
Thesis title: Image Processing for detection of cataract, retinopathy of
prematurity and glaucoma
Thesis title: Near-field study of surface plasmonic lenses for
nano-focusing applications
The objective of the Dr Motamed Ektesabi’s research was to set the
basis of creating a single tool to act as a diagnostic assistive device
for ophthalmologists. The research was conducted to assist more
than 284 million people who are suffering from visual impairments,
and to detect features such as Optic Disk, Macula, retinal vessels,
Iris and Pupil. The research aimed to keep the proposed techniques
simple, fast and highly accurate. The results indicate improvements in
detection, feasibility and reliability as part of a new assistive device.
Thi Song Ha Nguyen
Optical imaging has been utilised as a unique method for investigating
specific properties of materials. However, the optical resolution is
limited by the Rayleigh diffraction limit. Dr Venugopalan’s thesis has
used the unique properties of surface plasmons lending them to
the design of a circularly symmetric three dimensional nanoscopic
structure. This structure can focus the energy of a plasmon to a
very small volume, much beyond the diffraction limit. In this thesis,
Dr Venugopalan presents a circular ring plasmonic lens which can
focus two wavelengths of light to the same focal plane, opening up
applications in super-resolution imaging and optical-data storage.
Thesis title: Investigation of the molecular organisation of antibacterial
insect wing surfaces
Michal Aleksander Wosko
Currently available sterilisation methods often require large
chemical inputs which increase the risk of bacterial resistance.
The antibacterial properties of dragonfly wings provide an alternative
in which the mechanisms are purely due to physical means.
Dr Nguyen’s research involved investigation of the nature of dragonfly
wings in order to make use of their antibacterial activities. The study
synthesised artificial surfaces which possess similar properties
to dragonfly wings. The outcomes of the study can be applied on
various surfaces which benefit from being antibacterial, for example
producing medical implants that resist bacterial infections.
Robert Setiadi
Thesis title: Effective policies for workflow scheduling in stochastic
environments
In both business and computing, complex projects are often defined
as workflows, which describe the relationships between the project’s
tasks. A fundamental problem is how to schedule these tasks, that
is to say who and when has to perform them, to achieve specific
performance targets. This becomes difficult especially when the
tasks require an uncertain amount of time or when there is a queue
of overlapping projects. Additionally, in many projects some tasks
are executed, some are discarded and some can be repeated many
times, based on conditions evaluated at runtime. Dr Wosko’s research
presents algorithms which solve such problems effectively.
Thesis title: After-state database testing
Most of modern applications use database to store data and retrieve
it when necessary. Dr Setiadi ‘s research proposes after-state
database testing, a testing framework that aims to reveal data that
is inconsistent with the business rules and system specifications of a
database application. Inconsistent data can be used to reveal potential
faults in the system. This framework defines a structured model to
enable systematic extraction of consistency rules and an algorithm
to automatically generate consistency rules based on existing
data using data mining approach. Better testing will lead to better
software quality.
Genevieve Mae Shattow
Thesis title: Thinking outside the halo: a semi-analytic approach to
galaxies and their environments
Dr Shattow thesis addresses two questions fundamental to galaxy
formation: how does a galaxy’s environment affect its evolution
and how does a galaxy’s evolution affect its environment. To answer
these questions, this thesis uses semi-analytic models to explore
the co-evolution of galaxies and their environs. First, it compares
commonly used environment metrics to better understand how
proto-clusters in the early universe become the giant galaxy clusters
we see nearby. Second, it develops the definition of environment to
include not only nearby galaxies but also the intergalactic medium.
And finally, it builds a model of co-evolving galaxies and the
surrounding intergalactic medium.

Swinburne Research
William John Chancellor
Swinburne has consistently pursued a policy of ensuring quality
and critical mass by investing resources in areas of research
concentration. Swinburne actively encourages and values its
international and industry connections which enrich and enhance
the research efforts and careers of our academic staff and
students alike.
Thesis title: Construction in the Australian economy – understanding
the drivers of productivity
The graduates listed below have each made a valuable contribution
to Swinburne and their respective fields of research.
Graduates for awards from Swinburne Research will be presented by
the Executive Dean, Professor Michael Gilding.
Doctor of Philosophy
Dr Chancellor’s thesis ultimately explores the factors thought to
drive Australian construction productivity such as innovation through
research and development investment, and training through change in
the number of construction apprentices. Before it was possible to test
these factors rigorously, construction productivity was estimated at
the national, state and subdivision levels. These productivity estimates
were further refined by adjusting for change construction quality
and distortion resulting from change in shadow construction activity.
This research helps us to better understand how productivity in one
of Australia’s most significant and highest employing industries –
construction, can be improved.
John Boyd-Gerny
Thesis title: Marketing education investigating the skills and tasks
essential for the establishment of marketing careers
By examining the perceptions of marketing managers skills required
to enable career establishment, Dr Boyd-Gerny’s study extends the
knowledge of the skills required within the contemporary marketing
environment. The study identifies key skills as well as highlighting a
number of areas where the curriculums of post-graduate marketing
programs are perceived to be inadequate. The results found a
wide range of skills were perceived to be important for career
establishment, but the key skills were people management. These
findings provide an opportunity for academia and policy makers to
reflect on the higher education curriculum to ensure that the skills
required in later career stages are indeed delivered.

Swinburne Research
Swinburne has consistently pursued a policy of ensuring quality
and critical mass by investing resources in areas of research
concentration. Swinburne actively encourages and values its
international and industry connections which enrich and enhance
the research efforts and careers of our academic staff and
students alike.
The graduates listed below have each made a valuable contribution
to Swinburne and their respective fields of research.
Graduates for awards from Swinburne Research will be presented
by the Acting Executive Dean, Faculty of Health, Arts and Design,
Professor Scott Thompson-Whiteside.
Emma Louise Fisher
Thesis title: A profession in transition: practitioners’ research
engagement in the Australian communication design field
As graphic designers undertake increasingly complex projects,
they are being encouraged to use research to produce better design
outcomes. In this national study, perceptions were collected from
design practitioners and academics to evaluate how and why
Australian graphic designers conduct and read research. Dr Fisher
found that while engaging with research is likely to become more
common and designers typically considered it to be important,
research engagement is presently low due to complex interrelated
factors. The findings highlight the need to develop research
engagement methods that are truly relevant, practical and
effective for improving design outcomes.
Jillian Margaret Holt
Doctor of Philosophy
Michaela Therese Callaghan
Thesis title: Dancing at the corner of the dead: remembering and
forgetting in post-conflict Ayacucho, Peru
Dr Callaghan’s thesis considers dance as an embodied form of
collective memory in the Andean department of Ayacucho Peru,
following twenty years of brutal internal conflict. It combines the
areas of cultural memory studies with history and anthropology
to discover new ways of accessing and understanding non-verbal
forms of collective memory through dance. It uses embodied
research techniques to reveal that dance is a deep embodiment
of the broader concerns of the people of Ayacucho. It argues that
dance plays a significant role in the collective memory-making
practices of Ayacuchanos as they search for a history that makes
sense of what happened.
Michelle Jasmin Dimasi
Thesis title: Australia’s asylum seeker policy and Christmas Island
Many political and media discussions make reference to Christmas
Island, an Australian outpost located in the Indian Ocean, where
asylum seekers are detained. While most mainland Australians
only hear or read about asylum seekers via the media, the people of
Christmas Island experience asylum seekers face to face. Drawing on
ethnographic fieldwork conducted on Christmas Island from 2008 to
2011, Dr Dimasi’s thesis tells the story of the Christmas Island host
community. It examines what meaning can be made of islander and
asylum seeker encounters and provides insights into how Australia’s
asylum seeker policy plays out at the Australian border.

Thesis title: The ‘Art of Editing’: creative practice and pedagogy
Dr Holt’s thesis has been undertaken as practice-led/practice-based
research and leads to new insights into creativity in editing and the
teaching of editing practice. The artefact is designed as an educational
resource, structured around a series of interviews with prominent
Australian screen editors who discuss the creative attributes of editing
in reference to their practice, and in defining editing as a craft or an
art. The exegesis reflects on the production of the artefact, and opens
up a scholarly debate on theoretical, historical and contemporary
notions of creative editing practice, and teaching creativity in editing.
My Ngo
Thesis title: Religious space, transnational space, humanitarian
space: case study of a faith-based organisation on the African
migration route
Dr Ngo’s research demonstrates how the role of “religion” in
humanitarianism, particularly in the field of migration, is a negotiation
marked by contradictions, tension and ambiguity, reflecting the
wider ambivalent role of religion and the secular in the public sphere.
It puts into question the idea of distinct divisions between religion
and the secular, and religion and politics and considers how such
binaries can render invisible from the public sphere smaller
faith-based actors from the global South. The research contributes
to a greater understanding of organisations who engage in “other”
modes of humanitarian action that often go unrecognised in the
literature, thereby enlarging the definition of humanitarianism.

Maho Omori
Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology)
Thesis title: Anti-ageing medicine as edible health insurance: self-care
and ageing well among older adults living in Australia and Japan
Samantha Jane Beeken
Dr Omori’s study explored the meanings and reasons attached to
the use of anti-ageing medicine among older adults living in Australia
and Japan. Both Australian and Japanese participants considered
anti-ageing medicine as edible health insurance – a necessary
investment to prolong ‘health expectancy’ in old age. The findings
highlighted that their decision-making of using anti-ageing medicine
in their self-care practices was addressed by culturally embedded
health beliefs and practices as well as politically constructed
ideologies of ‘how to age successfully.’ The study suggests the
importance of considering cultural account in developing ageing
policies, including health promotions, particularly in multicultural
societies such as Australia.
Anastasia Ossoukhova
Thesis title: The role of glucoregulatory processes in the
cognition-enhancing effects of selected botanicals
Relationship between cognitive and glucoregulatory properties of
selected botanical extracts were accessed in a series a randomized,
double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-dose, repeated measures
design studies. American ginseng significantly improved various
aspects of working memory performance in both young and
middle-aged healthy adults, although the dosage required for optimal
effects varied according to the cognitive task employed. Peripheral
blood glucose measures were unaffected suggesting that cognitive
benefits were unrelated to the glucoregulatory properties of the herb.
Differences of a Steady State Visually Evoked Potential measures
in response to the active treatment compared to placebo suggest
greater neural efficiency following American ginseng ingestion.
Thesis title: Development and evaluation of a psychoeducation
program to reduce family accommodation in relatives of patients
experiencing symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder
Dr Beeken’s research project was developed to address the lack
of treatment options available for family members of those who
experience obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The development
of the Family Accommodation Support Program was based on
interviews with family members who shared their experiences of
living with someone experiencing OCD and provided suggestions
on what they would find useful in a support program. The program
was delivered to groups of family members and found to increase
knowledge and confidence about managing OCD and understanding
family accommodation and to positively impact on quality of life and
stress. Recommendations for future programs were also developed.
Doctor of Psychology (Counselling Psychology)
Shaun Patrick Delaney
Thesis title: Divorce and the experience of Australian men
Each year, almost 50,000 divorces are finalised in Australia with
thousands of other long-term relationships also ending in separation.
Although both men and women undergoing divorce can experience
severe distress, women are more likely to seek and receive help from
others. In contrast, the unique experience and emotional trauma felt
by men is often unrecognised and unsupported, sometimes with
tragic consequences. Dr Delaney’s study provided an important
insight into both the general factors associated with male adaptation
to divorce and the individual experiences of divorced Australian men.
Results will be used to help Australian men more positively adapt to
post-divorce life and parenting.
