ANNALEE’S
STORY
www.casapacifica.org
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Annalee spent the first day of her
placement at Casa Pacifica Centers for
Children and Families trying to attack
the staff in McDonalds Cottage – Casa
Pacifica’s emergency shelter cottage
for girls ages 6-17 years. Only six
years old, Annalee was filled with so
much anger she was determined to
cause harm to herself and others. And
a deep anxiety triggered her to have many ‘accidents.’ Annalee’s anger, anxiety, and
underlying fear were understandable. Though she was not the subject of it, at her young
age she had been forced to witness her mother severely abuse, even torture, her young
sibling. Without the vocabulary to share how she felt or what she’d seen, “acting out” was
the only way she had to express what was inside. Her fear revealed itself in other ways
as well – in night terrors, a fear of being alone in her room or in the bathroom, and
continuing to wet herself. Casa Pacifica’s staff went to work.
Upon Annalee’s placement, comprehensive assessments were performed and a treatment
plan was developed. Several of Casa Pacifica’s programs had a role in the plan including
Therapeutic Behavioral Services, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and Family Finding
services. Annalee remained in McDonalds Cottage for many months and made progress
little by little. The structure and predictability of the cottage program helped Annalee feel
secure. The unity of the staff across the various programs brought consistency in her treatment
and a feeling of security.
It wasn’t long before Casa Pacifica’s Family Finding services located Annalee’s paternal
aunt and grandmother who immediately joined the treatment team. Annalee had been so
disconnected, she did not use familiar family titles with them, in fact she referred to her
own mother as “that evil woman.” Annalee’s aunt attended the PCIT sessions with Annalee
and they began to build a bond. Each day she improved and her fear and anxiety
subsided. Annalee’s school was instrumental as well, with two teachers and the school
principal providing a wonderful support system and acting as a surrogate family for her.
Annalee’s accidents at school ended. As they say, “It takes a village to raise a child.” In
this case, with the efforts of Casa Pacifica’s staff in the emergency shelter, TBS, PCIT, and
Family Finding programs, her school support system, and her aunt and grandmother,
Annalee was able to make leaps and bounds in her healing, letting go of her anger and
anxiety. She now lives with her aunt and they receive support services from Casa Pacifica.
At seven years old, Annalee is doing well and is very happy with her new start in life.
Accomplishments over the last year include:
• Casa Pacifica admitted a child into one of its
programs every 2.5 hours; on average 10
youth a day.
• Of the nearly 530 children and youth served
each day, one third was connected to a
campus program.
• We worked with 3,400 children and their
families in 2012-13.
• We delivered 4 hours of mental health
services per child per week.
• Ages of children served were: 7% under
6 years old, 18% between 6 – 11 years,
32% between 12 – 16 years, and
43% over 16 years.
• We worked with kids and families from
every community in both Ventura and Santa
Barbara Counties.
• 87% of children and youth in our bed-based
programs were discharged to lower levels
of care.
• 84% of children and youth were successful in
meeting their treatment goals.
• We handled over 320 crisis calls a month in
both counties. 40% of the calls on average
were responded to in person; the rest
required phone contact alone.
• In Casa Pacifica’s Family Finding services,
83% of youth made a connection, were
referred for placement, or were placed with
a familial connection.
• Clients in our Coaching Independence in
Transitional Youth (CITY) Program showed
marked improvement in every one of the
program’s five Life Domain areas - Education,
Employment & Career, Living Situation,
Community Life Functioning, and Personal
Effectiveness & Wellbeing.
• Casa Pacifica has admitted more than
18,500 children into its programs since
opening in 1994.

CASA PACIFICA PROGRAMS
CAMPUS PROGRAMS
Crisis Care Emergency Shelter Temporary shelter for children ages
infant to 18 years, who fall victim to family abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
Residential Treatment Center For children ages 9 to 18 years with
severe emotional or behavioral problems that prove too difficult for
the youth to maintain placement in a group or foster home.
Steven E. Elson, Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer, Casa Pacifica
Please join us at the 21st annual Casa Pacifica Angels
Wine, Food & Brew Festival! The Wine, Food & Brew
Festival (our new name) has grown to become Ventura
County’s “Best Charity Event” and “Best Food & Drink
Festival” (as voted by the VC Reporter’s readers) for
the last six years and counting while raising significant funds to support the
vital programs and services Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families provides to our communities’ most vulnerable children and youth and
their families.
It requires the dedicated efforts of many individuals over several months to
make this spectacular day possible. In fact, planning for the next year begins
within few weeks following the Festival. Casa Pacifica’s Development
Department and I would like to thank the members of the Wine, Food &
Brew Festival Committee for their time, organization, and creativity; our
generous Hosts – the Zarley Family, the Van Huisen Family, and Union
Bank; all our terrific sponsors; the VIP Lounge host – Wells Fargo; the VIP
Entrance host – Mastro’s Restaurant; the Cassar Family – hosts of the first
ever Yummies Top Chef Dinner; the wonderful food and beverage exhibitors
that make the Festival a great place to be; the fabulous chefs and
knowledgeable judges of the Yummies culinary competition; the expert
judges of our first “Best in Fest” brew competition; the excellent entertainment sponsored by The Players Casino and Patio Restaurant; the numerous
volunteers who are willing to help however, whenever, and wherever
needed; the Casa Pacifica Angels, the Amigos, and our Board of Directors.
Without the hundreds of people behind the scenes giving their all and their
best, the Festival wouldn’t be possible, much less so successful. We are
very grateful for each of them.
This year Festival-goers will sample delicious creations made by some of the
top chefs in the County and beyond from over 85 restaurants, caterers, and
bakeries, along with 150 outstanding wineries and breweries from throughout
California. Live music, a silent auction, the Yummies Culinary Competition,
and the beautiful California State University Channel Islands setting will
make this day a memorable occasion for a great cause. Don’t miss out on
the fun! We hope to see you at the Wine, Food & Brew Festival
on Sunday, June 1st!

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Ventura & Santa Barbara Counties
Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS) Short-term, individualized
behavioral interventions provided in the home, school, or other community
setting for children who are in jeopardy of being placed in a high-level
group home.
Wraparound An intensive, family-centered program that targets the
special needs of youth who are at-risk of being removed from home.
Families receive an individualized plan based on their unique strengths,
values, norms, and preferences.
Intensive Family Services (IFS) Same program as Wraparound but
services are provided for only a few months instead of a year to yearand-a half.
Intensive Treatment Foster Care (ITFC) ITFC provides focused
help to one emotionally challenged child at a time in the stable foster
home environment of a caring adult or couple. Through intensive treatment
services in the foster home, ITFC foster parents support and nurture needy
children and youth and act as a bridge between the child and their return
to their family of origin.
Kindle Family Connections Children separated from family may lose
permanent relationships. This program reconnects foster children with
their lost families and helps heal emotional wounds.
Coaching Independence in Transitional Youth (CITY) Provides
much needed services to Casa Pacifica youth who are about to, or who
have already emancipated from the foster care system including, but
not limited to, housing, employment, and educational assistance.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD
$33 per day, per child in donations from caring
people like you make a world of difference to
children like . . .
8-year-old Brandon, whose mother passed
away and his new step-mother had a more
severe way of punishing him . . . or,
10-year-old Alison, whose neighbor was doing
more than just keeping an eye on her while
babysitting her . . . or,
15-year-old Robert, who ran away from home
and his drug addicted parents and lived on the
streets for several months . . . or,
5-year-old Trina, whose mother severely
neglected her because she didn’t want to ‘deal
with’ the issues of a handicapped child . . .
Just $33 per day, per child enables Casa Pacifica to provide its
basic needs, healing programs and services to abused, neglected, or
at-risk children – high quality programs delivered with excellence – as
well as innovative programs such as Therapeutic Camp, therapeutic
preschool, a 24/7 health clinic specializing in children of trauma and
neglect, a music program, and afterschool activities, among others.
As part of its private/public partnership, Casa Pacifica must raise
$2.7 million to meet its fundraising goal for 2013-2014 – 10% of
its $27 million operating budget – in private dollars to fill the gap
between what funding it receives through government service
contracts and the actual costs of running its cutting edge,
healing programs and services.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Please make a donation today by visiting
www.casapacifica.org
