Barn Quilts
of Kankakee County
Explore history, art, and tradition on a scenic selfdriving tour of colorful barn quilts. Barn quilts are large,
colorful, wooden blocks that are designed, hand painted,
and mounted on historic barns. The county-wide Barn
Quilt Tour showcases Kankakee County’s rural heritage.
If these barn walls could talk they would tell stories of
hard work, perseverance, bliss, celebration, growth, and
change. Request a free Barn Quilt Tour Guidebook to
learn the recorded history of each homestead.
Start the Tour
See the west side of the Barn Quilt Tour; don’t forget
to bring a camera. Enjoy a unique restaurant, from Greek
to classic Italian to authentic Mexican or a traditional
steakhouse. After a good meal, drive to Historic
Riverview to see the quaint parks, riverfront, and Frank
Lloyd Wright Prairie Style Houses.
Keep Exploring
After a restful night at one of Kankakee County’s fine
lodging accommodations, satisfy your morning hunger at
a family diner. As soon as the breakfast plates are cleared,
drive the east side of the Barn Quilt Tour. Then pick
up a tasty lunch-to-go and picnic outside the Railroad
Museum beside the 1947 Pullman Car. To explore
even more art and history, visit the Kankakee County

Dairy Queen’s
Kankakee Origins
More than 70 years ago “Sherb’s” sat on South West
Avenue, in Kankakee. The small, walk-in ice cream shop
was named for its owner, Sherwood Dick “Sherb” Noble.
On August 4, 1938 a sign appeared in the shop’s window
that read: “All you can eat for 10¢!”
J. F. McCullough and his son Alex McCullough
of Green River, Illinois, had been experimenting with
a new semi-frozen, “soft-serve” dairy recipe. They
contacted Sherb Noble, a good friend and customer,
who agreed to run the “all you can eat” trial sale at his
ice cream shop. The sale was a success, dishing out more
than 1,600 servings of the new dessert in just two hours.
Sherb’s customers made history that August day.
Their enthusiastic acceptance of McCullough’s softserve dairy dessert would launch a multi-million dollar
business. Sherb and McCullough opened the first “Dairy
Queen” (a name suggested by McCullough) in Joliet,
Illinois on June 22, 1940.
Sherb remained active in the Kankakee community
until his death in March 1991, at age 82. The Kankakee
Chamber of Commerce honored Sherb Noble as
Businessman of the Year in 1990.
Today, more than 5,900 Dairy Queen restaurants serve
the United States, Canada, and 20 foreign countries.

Barn Quilts
of Kankakee County
The Barn Quilt concept originated in Adams County,
Ohio. Donna Sue Groves, a Field Representative
with the Ohio Arts Council, promised her mother,
a skilled quilter, she would paint a quilt pattern on
their plain tobacco barn. Donna appreciated the arts
and viewed barns as symbols of history and culture.
These timeless structures could be an opportunity,
a canvas for creativity and public display.
In 2003 Donna’s promise to her mother was fulfilled
and a Snail’s Trail quilt square was mounted on the
Grove family barn. In time, volunteers painted and
mounted twenty quilt squares throughout Adams
County. They called it the “Barn Clothesline” of
quilt squares.
Kankakee County adopted the Barn Quilt initiative
in 2008. Local artists, quilters, and barn owners
worked together to create a county-wide tour of rural
splendor. The Barn Quilt squares are 8 foot by 8 foot
wooden blocks, painted with durable exterior paint for
prolonged display. Each pattern and homestead shares a
unique story of growth, celebration, toil, and tradition.
The colorful Barn Quilts welcome visitors to explore
Kankakee County’s scenic countryside.
To learn more about the history and sentiments
behind the Barn Quilts of Kankakee County contact
the Kankakee County Convention and Visitors Bureau
and request a free Barn Quilt Tour Guide.
