Dartmouth Big Green
2006 Football Game Notes
Eugene F. (Buddy) Teevens III, who
as a player led Dartmouth to the 1978
Ivy League championship and as a
coach led Dartmouth football to backto-back Ivy League titles in 1990 and
1991, returned as the head coach of the
Big Green football program in 2005.
Teevens coached Dartmouth
from 1987 through 1991. During his
final two seasons, the Big Green posted
identical overall records of 7-2-1. With
a 6-1 record, Dartmouth shared the
1990 Ivy title with Cornell. In 1991,
Dartmouth won the outright championship with a 6-0-1 mark. His overall
record at Dartmouth is 28-30-2.
Teevens holds the Robert L. Blackman Endowed Coaching
Position, named in memory of Bob Blackman, who coached
Dartmouth from 1955 to 1970, and created through the gift of
Henry M. (Hank) Paulson ’68, an outstanding offensive tackle who
played for Blackman from 1965-67.
In addition to restoring Dartmouth’s rich football tradition,
Teevens has been an integral force in a major series of improvements
to Dartmouth’s football facilities that are in progress, including installation of a FieldTurf surface on Memorial Field for the 2006 season,
and a new varsity house that includes training, dressing and meeting
facilities. This new building, scheduled for use in 2007, is part of
a project that includes the refurbishment of the east grandstand at
Memorial Field.
Teevens succeeded John Lyons at the helm of the Big Green
and is the 21st coach in the program's 124-year history. Teevens was
Dartmouth's 19th coach during his first tenure.
From 2002 through 2004, Teevens was the head coach at
Stanford University. Prior to that, Teevens was on Steve Spurrier’s
staff at the University of Florida from 1998 to 2001. In 1999,
Teevens was Florida’s running backs coach. In 2000, he was the passing game coordinator while also coaching tight ends, wide receivers,
kickers, snappers and holders. The following year, he was the assistant offensive coordinator and tight ends coach.
His first game with the Gators was the 1999 Orange Bowl.
In his three full seasons at Florida, the Gators went 29-9, participated
in three bowl games and finished among the top-12 in the final polls
each season. In his final year in 2001, the Gators went 10-2, defeated
Maryland in the Orange Bowl and finished ranked third in both
national polls.
From 1997 to 1998, Teevens was the offensive coordinator
and receivers coach at the University of Illinois under Ron Turner.
From 1992-96, Teevens was the head coach at Tulane
University. He rebuilt that program and recruited most of the team
that went 11-0 in 1998.
Teevens began his coaching career in 1979 as the running
backs coach at DePauw University. In 1980, he became the offensive
coordinator at Boston University and remained with the Terrier program until 1985 when he was appointed the head football coach at
the University of Maine.
2006 Big Green Football
He led the Black Bears to a 6-5 record in 1985 and a 7-4
mark in 1986, the program's first back-to-back winning seasons in 21
years.
In 15 years as a head coach, Teevens' record is 62-107-2.
At Dartmouth, Teevens was honored as the New England
Coach of the Year for the 1991 season. The Big Green's Ivy title that
year was the school's first outright championship since 1978.
Born October 1, 1956, Teevens earned an A.B. degree
in history from Dartmouth in 1979. An honorable mention AllAmerica quarterback in 1978, he led the Big Green to the Ivy title
that year. He was named the Ivy League and ECAC player of the year
and played in the Blue-Gray Classic. Co-captain of the 1978 team (63, 6-1 in Ivy games), Teevens was the squad’s most valuable player. He
also lettered in hockey, helping Dartmouth to a third-place finish at
the 1979 NCAA championship. He was voted the Alfred W. Watson
Trophy as Dartmouth's outstanding athlete.
The name Teevens is intertwined through Dartmouth athletic history. Buddy's father, the late Eugene F. Teevens II ’52, was a
hockey letterwinner. His younger brother, Shaun ’82, was a two-sport
athlete in football and hockey and also a recipient of the Watson
Trophy. A sister, Moira ’87, captained the women’s cross country and
track teams and earned All-Ivy and All-East recognition as a runner.
A native of Pembroke, Mass., Teevens and his wife, Kirsten,
have two children, Lindsay, a student at the University of Florida, and
Eugene IV, a student at Salisbury School.

TOP RUNNER, TOP RECEIVER, TWO OF TOP
THREE TACKLERS FROM 2005 ALL BACK
Dartmouth safety Corey Goff is a graduate of The Hill School which
also produced Colgate safety Chek Wingo and Raider linebacker
Mark Colon. ... Dartmouth corner Jason Reid and Colgate defensive
end Owen Brenner are both Hunterdon Central High School graduates from Ringoes, N.J.
• Senior Jason Bash led Dartmouth last year with 320 yards rushing.
• Sophomore Milan Williams topped the team with 4.7 yards per
carry last year.
• Senior Ryan Fuselier was the leading receiver (51 catches) and scorer
(32 points) a year ago.
• Junior Ian Wilson (90 tackles) and senior Joe Gibalski (87) were No.
2 and 3 in tackles in 2005.
RENEWING ACQUAINTANCES II
ALL-IVY RETURNEES
RENEWING ACQUAINTANCES
Dartmouth has had freshmen from Los Angeles powerhouse Loyola
for three consecutive years. Freshman offensive lineman Jonathan
Summers, sophomore safety Casey Frost and junior safety Ian Wilson
followed former tight end Joe Killefer '06 East.
Wide receiver Ryan Fuselier was chosen to the All-Ivy second team last
year. Safety Ian Wilson was named to the honorable mention team.
BIG GUY BONANZA
Dartmouth has seven players from New York: Bronxville (Alexander
Toth); Manlius ( Joe Battaglia); Mamaroneck (Michael Dearwester);
Syracuse (Rich Cummings, Erik Estabrook); Port Washington (Dan
Koh).
Colgate has two players from New Hampshire: Exeter (Pat
Nolan); Hampton (Aaron Ellis).
Four of five starters ( Jarden Dowdakin, Mike Shannon, Taylor Layman and Preston Copley return for Dartmouth on the offensive line
although the positions have been reshuffled. Layman has moved from
center to left guard. Copley has gone from left guard to left tackle.
Shannon has moved from left tackle to center. Only Dowdakin remains where he played last year, at right guard. The only newcomer is
Ben Goeke, who takes over for the graduated Daniel Tootoo at right
tackle.
STATES AND MORE STATES
AMONG THE MISSING
HOME COOKING
Dartmouth has players from 32 states including Alaska this year.
Leading the way: California with 15 players, Massachusetts with 11
and New York with seven.
LONG DISTANCE INFORMATION
After playing all five of its road games in New England last year, Dartmouth has to leave the region for all five games this fall.
ONLY APPEARANCE ON THE REAL THING
Colgate's Andy Kerr Stadium has the only real grass field Dartmouth
will play on this fall. Last year the Big Green didn't play a single game
on the ersatz stuff.
IT'S GOING TO BE ITZ, EITHER WAY
While Chad Gaudet, who led the Big Green with 389 yards rushing in just over a half season of varsity action as a freshman is in this
year's press guide, he is still working his way back from a knee injury
incurred on the first carry of the 2005 season against Colgate. Wide
receiver Chris Collado is also in the guide but not with the team after
injuring his knee in the spring game.
GETTING THEIR KICKS
One of the problems with having the same player do the placekicking
and punting is that when he graduates, he leaves two holes. Expected
to replace Erik Hinterbichler the placekicker is junior Andrew Kempler, who spent his off term in Barcelona. Expected to replace Erik
Hinterbichler the punter is sophomore Brian Scullin, who did kick
nine times last fall for a 31.4-yard average.
Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens hadn't named his starting quarterback by midweek but one thing was certain, his name will end in itz.
Either junior Tom Bennewitz or senior Mike Fritz.
Neither of Dartmouth's top two quarterbacks has thrown a
varsity pass coming into this season. Bennewitz threw for 462 yards

NEW GRASS WILL ALWAYS BE GREENER
Pronunciation Guide
Ready to go for the 2006 season is the newest generation FieldTurf
surface featuring reinforced spine monofilament and silica sand and
cryogenic rubber infill that realistically simulates real grass. Work on
the field began May 15 when bulldozers tore up the grass in the stadium, the home of Dartmouth football since 1923. New play clocks
have been installed behind each end zone and state-of-the-art portable
bleachers will span the back of the end zones. The stadium capacity
has been reduced from 21,000 to 13,000 with seating for 7,000 in the
West Stands, 3,000 in the East Stands, and 1,500 in each end zone.

THE OKLAHOMA KID
Serving as a Dartmouth assistant coach working with the wide receivers this fall is Jarrail "JJ" Jackson, 28, still an active player with the
Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz of Arena Football2. Jackson led the Yard
Dawgz this past season in touchdowns, receptions and all-purpose
yards. The former Oklahoma Sooner standout caught a career-high
54 passes for 659 yards and seven touchdowns as senior in Norman,
setting school records in each category and making the All-Big 12 third
team. Jackson is still second on the Sooners' list for punt return yards
and is first in number of punt returns. He shares the Independence
Bowl record for catches in a game after grabbing 10 against Ole Miss.
Jackson was in the Buffalo Bills' training camp two years and spent
time on the team's practice squad. He has worked as receivers coach at
Chickasha High School in Oklahoma and as a volunteer coach at the
University of Central Oklahoma.
Game Day Buddies
For the fourth year in a row, the Dartmouth football team
will continue its community outreach effort with the “Game
Day Buddies” program. During each of the five home games,
the team will host children from various groups in the Upper
Valley and treat them to a day of activities and football.
Each of the participants will be paired with a Dartmouth
football player as a special game day buddy. The children will
don a Dartmouth football jersey corresponding to the number
of their game day buddy. They will be given a facilities tour
and get a chance to speak with Coach Teevens and watch the
team’s highlight film. After the game, they will be guests of
their game day buddy at the Friends of Dartmouth Football
tent and have the opportunity to visit with the players and
get autographs and pictures. All of the participants will take a
group photo which will be autographed and sent to the children as a keepsake of the day.
The Game Day Buddies program continues the football team’s long-standing commitment to community service.
During the past 10 years, the team has spoken to children at
many local elementary schools, participated in the “Big Green
Readers Program” and visited area hospitals, including the
Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth.

2005 REPLAY
Dartmouth 26, Colgate 21
Sweet, Sweet Music
By Bruce Wood
www.biggreenalert.com
Hanover -- A handful of times during the preseason Dartmouth football
coach Buddy Teevens gathered his players at the end of practice and had them
work on their singing.
The team’s rendition of the Alma Mater after Saturday’s opener suggested there’s still work to be done on the tune, but make no mistake, it’s been
a long time since the music sounded any sweeter.
An aggressive Dartmouth defense and an opportunistic Big Green
offense came together to kick off Teevens’ second-stint in Hanover on a perfect note Saturday with a 26-21 victory over traditional Patriot League powerhouse Colgate.
The hard-fought win marked Dartmouth’s first season-opening
victory in eight years, stopped a six-game skid against the Raiders (1-2) and
matched last year’s entire victory total in a 1-9 season.
“It’s great,” said senior linebacker Josh Dooley, whose 29-yard return
of a fumble provided the Big Green’s first points of the year. “It’s been a while
since we’ve won our home opener. (Since the undefeated 1996 campaign actually.) It really sets the mood for the season. Right now we have a lot of momentum going for the rest of the season.
“If you don’t get that ‘W’ in the first game, it kind of makes people
shaky. This just adds to the confidence of the team.”
Dartmouth managed just eight first downs and 193 total yards
against a stingy Colgate defense, but the Big Green won because the defense
knocked out the entire Raider starting backfield, forced four turnovers and
made a huge fourth-and-one stop at the end. Because the offense was 2-for-2
in the red zone -- where it mattered most. And because the special teams came
through with senior Erik Hinterbichler booting a 42- yard field goal, going
3-for-3 on extra points and dropping a punt on the 1-yard line that led to a
fourth-quarter safety.
“I was pleased with the attitude of our players,” said Teevens, who
won his first game at Dartmouth since 1991. “There were some emotional ups
and downs. ... We made plays when we needed to make them.
“I’m very pleased with the defense. There was some very, very physical play. The turnovers were tremendous for us with point producers, field position and whatnot. The offense (had) a number of drives to keep our defense
off the field. I thought our kicking game was thorough.”
But so was Colgate’s domination everywhere but on the scoreboard
in the first 15 minutes.
The Raiders took 30 snaps in the opening quarter. Dartmouth,
meanwhile, went three-and-out on its only possession and had the ball for just
1:37. And still, despite piling up the yards and first downs, Colgate couldn’t
break through until fullback Ben Evans crashed over the line from the 2 to give
the Raiders a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter.
Dartmouth tied the game just over 2 minutes later when defensive
end Ryan Tay-lor’s hit on Colgate quarterback Lee Sloan jarred the ball loose
at the 29. Dooley scooped it up and returned it to the end zone for the first
defensive touchdown the All- Ivy League linebacker can remember scoring.
“The defense really kept us in it all game,” said quarterback Charlie Rittgers (12- for-25, 122 yards, one TD and one interception). “The first
quarter our offense only had three touches. That was a big score when Dooley
picked that fumble up. I think that gave the offensive guys confidence.”
If that didn’t, what happened next did.
2006 Big Green Football
Three plays after Colgate received the kickoff, senior corner Steve
Jensen picked off a Sloan pass at the visitors’ 38 and ran it back to the 3. Rittgers promptly faked a handoff up the middle, rolled right and dropped an easy
pass to tight end Mark Brogna for a 14-7 lead.
A 29-yard screen pass from Rittgers to senior Ikechi Ogbonna on a
third-and-32 play set up the final points of the half, Hinterbichler’s career-long
field goal that made it 17-7 at the break.
Colgate had a couple of opportunities sandwiched around the field
goal to cut into the lead. The first was foiled when the Big Green’s Matt Dratch
hauled dangerous re-ceiver DeWayne Long down for a seven-yard loss on an
inside screen on a fourth-and- five play at the Dartmouth 29.
The second came when Colgate had the ball at midfield with 2:15
left and line-backer Joe Gibalski forced at fumble that Taylor covered for the
Green.
The Raiders eventually closed to within 17-14 early in the second
half when Dartmouth receiver Ryan Fuselier was hit -- probably early -- on a
pass at the Colgate 44 and the ball popped into linebacker Jared Nepa’s hands.
He returned the intercep- tion 39 yards to the Big Green 17. One completion
and three runs later 280-pound backup center-turned-fullback Rich Rosabella
bulled in from the 1 to make it a 3-point game.
The Raiders seemed to have wrestled the momentum back when
Chris Williams intercepted another Rittgers aerial with 2:43 left in the third
quarter but Dartmouth freshman safety Kyle Cavanaugh wrestled the “mo”
right back with a shoestring inter-ception on Colgate’s first play after the turnover. That gave the Big Green the ball at the plus-37.
Rittgers was 3-3 on the ensuing drive before Jason Bash burst over
the line untouched from the one behind right tackle Daniel Tootoo for a 24-14
lead.
Colgate made things interesting when Jordan Scott broke a 33-yard
touchdown run to make it 24-21 with 9:40 to go. They got more interesting
after Hinterbichler’s 32- yard punt was downed by Gibalski at the 1 and Colgate quarterback Mike Saraceno promptly slipped down in the end zone for a
safety that made it 26-21 with 5:14 showing.
A quick three-and-out and a 17-yard punt after the safety gave the
ball to Colgate at the Dartmouth 45 with 2:49 left. Three plays later, the Raiders had a fourth-and-one at the Big Green 36 with 1:23 left.
“In the huddle, we said, ‘This is the game right here,’ ” Dooley recalled. “If we stop this right here, this is the game. Everybody knew how big a
play it was.”
Colgate called tailback Ray LaMonica’s number and linebacker
Terry Cunning-ham, safety Cavanaugh and a host of tacklers gang tackled him
four inches short of the marker to set off a wild celebration.
“We ran a blitz to that side,” Dooley said. “I don’t know who exactly
was in there but it was a big tackle. That was a huge, huge play for us.”
And he was right. It was the game.
Three kneel downs later, Dooley and his teammates were singing
the Alma Mater.
“They need more practice,” Teevens said with a laugh.
He’d like nothing more than if they have the chance to work on it
again next week at New Hampshire.
