ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JUNE 14, 2015
We either pay attention to or ignore “clock time” as we play in the summer sun and note the earth’s tilt and the lengthening of days. We live
by time. We reckon time in seconds and minutes and hours, or we use bigger chunks like suppertime and summertime.
God keeps another sort of time. God speaks to us of “saving time,” that is, the time of salvation. This sense of time is called kairos,
and this time is always now, always present and available, always revealing, often surprising.
This Sunday’s readings alert us to the reality and import of God’s time. Ezekiel and the Gospel of Mark remind us that our labor
and our plotting and our planning rest in God. For God takes our smallest efforts and makes them great works. Paul points us to the
“harvest” time, urges us to be watchful for its coming, and calls us to recognize that we must spend our time in pleasing God.
GOD’S SAVING TIME
We are a people who schedule, plot, and plan. Even in the summertime, we live in a world of adjusted clocks and tight schedules.
Even in the summertime, we are obsessed with time, striving to own it, stretch it, or save it, if only to waste it in the end. Thank goodness
that even in summertime we are reminded that God’s salvation—“God’s Saving Time”—is always at hand. Thank goodness that we are
able to plot the time of summer in order to consecrate it and there encounter the God who orders not only all things, but all time as well.
Whatever grows around us on the windowsill or in the garden, whatever appears fresh at the market, can remind us of plotting time
and of the surprises of time’s unfurling, the benevolent time of God’s coming. That is why this time is as good a time as any to nurture the
inner ear, the inner eye, and to move to the rhythm of God’s saving time, God’s surprising salvation.
Today’s Readings: Ez 17:22–24; Ps 92:2–3, 13–14, 15–16; 2 Cor 5:6–10; Mk 4:26–34

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
A wedding celebrated in the Eastern Church has a form that was fixed a thousand years ago. In the West,
our story is more complicated by constant change and variation. As the world’s structures tottered in the ninth
century, bishops and priests stepped into the void left by collapsing civil structures. For the first time, marriage was
referred to as a sacrament, and wedding ceremonies were to be in public (assuring the free consent of the bride)
after an investigation of the couple by a priest. The custom of the blessing of the bridal room diminished, and was
finally forbidden in 1012 by the Council of Rouen, although it continued for centuries. In the diocese of Perigueux
in France, a ritual from 1827 had the parish priest clad in surplice and stole sprinkling the bridal couple as they
stood modestly in their pajamas by the wedding bed. Next the bed and all those present were sprinkled, too! That’s
a tradition that few Americans, either the betrothed or the clergy, are ready to revive!

2015 CARDINAL’S APPEAL
To date our parish has received $115,085.00 in pledges/gifts toward the 2015 Cardinal’s Appeal, from 340 families. For this
Appeal to be truly successful, we must have the support of all of our families. The Appeal is a vital source of funding for the
programs and ministries that sustain the parishes across our Archdiocese. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for
your kind support. Please consider giving if you have not already done so. Our parish goal is $154,000.00.
BECOMING A CATHOLIC

H.A.N.D.S also now has a WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS GROUP facilitated by Ann Carucci, who lost her husband. These meetings are
held every Monday at 9 Scott Drive, New City. For further information please contact Ann Carucci at 634-6706.
THE RACHEL MINISTRY
Every 20 seconds an unborn child is aborted in the United States. In the 30 years since Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that
legalized abortion on demand, the death toll has reached over 55 million. But the statistics do not document the other casualties: the
mothers, fathers, grandparents and friends who are emotionally and spiritually affected. The Rachel ministry is a CONFIDENTIAL
ministry for those scarred by abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. Come and heal every third Monday of the month at the Marian Shrine in
the Cafeteria Building in West Haverstraw, at 7:30pm. The next meeting is on June 15th. For more information call 845-429-2077 or the
Marian Shrine at 845-947-2200.
