Some years ago at a football game in North Carolina a
fellow spectator and I began
to talk. The conversation went
to “church”. The man told me
he was a Baptist. Since I am
a Baptist, I thought that we had some common ground. I asked him
when he had come to know the Lord as Savior. He then began to
tell me of his involvement in his church; he told me of his activities,
how long he had been going to church, etc. He even told me of
when he shook the preacherʼs hand on Sunday and was baptized
by immersion.
Curiously absent in the discussion between us was any reference by him of his being forgiven through the atoning death of
Christ on the cross. Though he spoke much of his works at his
church, he did not speak at all of his inability to be saved by those
works. He did not comprehend Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace are
ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God: not of works, lest any man should boast.”
It was clear that this faithful member, attender and server in his
church had no understanding of what Christ had done for him on
the cross. He had substituted religious “stuff” for the forgiveness
of sin that Jesus purchased with His shed blood and arose from
the dead to authenticate. Sad!
