The town of Orlando, associated with vacations, leisure
and fun, has witnessed in recent days the murder of a rising singing star, a terrorist
rampage and an alligator attack at a Disney resort. What is especially disturbing is that there
was some degree of advance warning about the latter two incidents.
Authorities were aware that the nightclub terrorist had sympathized and been associated with terrorism as far back as 2013. A
co-worker had heard him threaten to kill others and reported it. In
2015, a parent reported to Disney Resort staff an alligator had pursued their child. The concern was dismissed by staff who explained
these alligators were like pets and not a threat. I have seen signs
around other ponds in Florida that read, “Danger – Alligators”; the
signs at Disney said, “No swimming”. So warnings were either unheeded or unheard in both incidents.
Godʼs Word warns that there is a malevolent entity afoot who
desires to destroy us. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he
may devour: whom resist steadfast in the faith…” (I Peter 5:8-9a)
You can dismiss this and other warnings in the Bible as groundless
and unwarranted, or you can take them seriously. You can learn to
“resist steadfast in the faith” before the threat arrives, or, like Disney,
kill alligators after the fact. Which will it be?
