PETROLEUM CLUB
President’s Message
This is being written while the TV is giving
wall-to-wall election coverage. By now we
have all voted and are either cheering or
weeping. We will certainly have some
interesting conversations as we meet with
the ladies (MOWA) at the Petroleum Club,
800 Bell Street, 43rd Floor, November 18.
Note: We are encouraged to use valet
parking ($7) as we arrive at the Exxon Building.
We are invited to attend the 72nd Infantry Brigade combat
Team’s “Uncasing the Colors” Ceremony. Saturday, Nov. 20,
Lakewood Church, 3700 SW Fwy, at 1400 hours (2 p.m.),
civilian-casual attire. This assembly closes out the Brigade’s Iraq
deployment. Come and help us lend support.
Our October speaker, Colonel Bill Keyes hit a home run for our
chapter. His explanation of where and how all fuel products are
procured and distributed through its amazing and breathtaking
network was an eye-opener for all of us. To think, both I and
many of our chapter, that we “got it all at the motor pool’!
And Our Christmas Party is nearly here! We have the entire
Swan Room and a big parking lot at Vargo’s Restaurant all to
ourselves. The party starts at 6 p.m. If you need a ride, let
Jeannette Evans know when you make your reservation (281495-2202). We have people standing by and ready to share their
cars. And we will again participate in the Marines’ “Toys for
Tots” program, so bring a new toy or two, without gift
wrapping.

SHALOM! PEACE BE
WITH YOU!
We Americans have a truly
unique Holiday this month;
it’s called Thanksgiving! No
other nation on Earth has
anything completely just like
it, although Canada and the
Netherlands have similar
observances. From the First
Observance in 1621 by the
Puritans at Plymouth
Plantation in Massachusetts
through this year on
November 25th, it’s been a
day set aside by Americans to
give thanks to God for the
harvest of His bounty, and
express our eternal gratitude
for our many blessings from
our good and gracious
Almighty God.
In Oct 1789, President George
Washington proclaimed
Thanksgiving Day for Nov.
26 of that year, stating it as a
Day of Thanksgiving and
Prayer:
“Whereas, it is the duty of all
nations to acknowledge the
providence of Almighty God,
to obey His will, to be grateful
for His benefits, and humbly
to implore His protection and
favor; and Whereas, both
Houses of Congress have, by
their joint committee,
requested me to recommend
to the people of the Unites
States a day of public
thanksgiving and prayer, to be
observed by acknowledging
with grateful hearts the many
and signal favors of Almighty
Newsletter of MOAA Houston Area, November 2010, p. 2
God, especially by affording
them an opportunity
peaceably to establish a form
of government for their
safety and happiness . . . .”
Later in Oct. 1863, President
Lincoln issued a fresh
Proclamation, and finally in
1941, President Roosevelt
made Thanksgiving a
National Holiday for the
fourth day of each
November.
Today, however, many
Americans have allowed
Thanksgiving to become just
another secular Holiday,
forgetting its religious roots.
That is indeed a shame, as
we all need to have an
“Attitude of Gratitude” for
God’s blessings! However,
families do get together
enjoying a big feast of turkey
and dressing,cranberry sauce,
pumpkin pie, and NFL or
Collegiate football! And, of
course Macy’s Parade!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
GOD BLESS Y’ALL!

DLA Energy Americas is
headquartered in Houston,
and his staff of 144 supports
the war fighter supply
products to North and South
America. They provided all
fuel to Haiti for its recent
troubles. They also work with
Columbia in its drug wars and
provide fuel for their aid. In
fact, COL Keyes recently
returned from a trip to
Columbia on that very
subject. He said their biggest
issue is counter-drug.
Their contracts are $7.8
Billion per year, and include
the Air Force, Army, Marines,
Navy, Coast Guard,
Homeland Security, NASA,
FEMA, and the DOD. Pretty
big responsibility.
Most shipments are out of
headquarters by truck,
contracted. All end at major
Air Force bases. He told us
about the Colonial Pipeline, a
40-inch pipeline that runs
from Houston to the
Northeast. JP8 is kerosene jet
fuel with military specs that is
used for combad fuel.
Ethanol products create
silicone buildup in pipelines,
so they don’t use it.
He also told us about the
Stryker M-1126 ICV, 8-wheel

tank that is such a workhorse
for us in Iraq and elsewhere.
These strong vehicles have
been blown away, and people
walked from it unhurt! In
Iraq they call it the “Gray
Ghost,” because it is very
quiet.

From Our October Meeting
Thanks to the ever-faithful Andy
Parsons for all these great photos!
COL Keyes presented his
“Commander’s coin” to both
President Causey and to our
founder, Col George
McDowell.
He was dressed in the new
Army uniform, which takes
the place of their former
dress greens. It’s based on
the uniform of the 1800s, and
he looked super in it.
He attended with Barbara,
his wife of 24 years. They
live in The Woodlands. Their
daughter Sara and son
Timothy are both students at
the University of Florida..

it’s good, too, to check up

you haven’t lost the things
that money can’t buy.

Tribute to Bob Hope
What a great support to our troops was Bob Hope. Many of today’s youngsters may not
even know about Bob Hope. He was born Leslie Townes Hope in Eltham, England, on
May 29, 1903, son of a stonemason and an aspiring concert singer. His father moved the
family to Cleveland, Ohio, and for nearly six decades, be the country at war or at peace,
Bob, with a band of Hollywood gypsies, traveled the globe to entertain our service men
and women, known fondly to them as “G.I.Bob.”
Here are some of his famous quotes we thought our members might enjoy:
ON TURNING 70: “You still chase women, but only downhill.”
ON TURNING 80 : “That's the time of your life when even your birthday suit needs
pressing.”
ON TURNING 90: “You know you’re getting old when the candles cost more than the
cake.”
ON TURNING 100: “I don't feel old. In fact , I don’t feel anything until noon. Then it’s
time for my nap.”
ON GIVING UP HIS EARLY CAREER, BOXING: “I ruined my hands in the ring. The
referee kept stepping on them.”
ON NEVER WINNING AN OSCAR: “Welcome to the Academy Awards or, as it’s
called at my home, ‘Passover.’
ON GOLF : “Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees.”
ON PRESIDENTS : “I have performed for 12 presidents and entertained only six.”
ON WHY HE CHOSE SHOWBIZ FOR HIS CAREER: “When I was born, the doctor
said to my mother, ‘Congratulations, you have an eight-pound ham.’”
ON RECEIVING THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL : “I feel very humble, but I
think I have the strength of character to fight it.”
ON HIS FAMILY’S EARLY POVERTY: “Four of us slept in the one bed. When it got
cold, mother threw on another brother.”
ON HIS SIX BROTHERS: “That’s how I learned to dance. Waiting for the bathroom.”
ON HIS EARLY FAILURES : “I would not have had anything to eat if it wasn’t for the
stuff the audience threw at me.”
ON GOING TO HEAVEN: “I’ve done benefits for ALL religions. I’d hate to blow the
hereafter on a technicality.”
Thanks for the Memories, Bob Hope.
