CULTURE
Petroglyphs, the intriguing rock carvings found throughout the Nordic countries,
date from the Bronze Age (1800 to 500 B.C.) The glyphs are pictures that tell a story
- often marking important events and cultural information. Boats and rituals are frequent subjects.
In 2016, Sarpsborg, Norway will
celebrate the 1000th anniversary of
its founding! Since it lies in an area of
southeastern Norway that has many
petroglyphs, designer/resident
Marry Raadahl and manufacturer
Dale of Norway have teamed up to
create a sweater that pays homage
to its ancient past. Even the
petroglyph pewter clasps
were specially designed.

Runes fi rst appeared around
150 AD and were commonly used
up through the late Medieval
period. Each rune had a meaning,
and as such were used in ritual and
divination probably long before
they evolved into use as an
alphabet. They were usually carved
in wood and bone, written on
animal skins, or carved in stone to
memorialize deaths and events.
Runes were an opportunity for
wordplay and storytelling,
a chance to express a sense
of fun when writing.
New from Minnesota’s
Tokheim Stoneware
and exclusively ours!
This handmade beauty
functions nicely as a bowl,
a vase, or even a wine chiller!
5” tall, it features a beautiful
green glaze and a fi nely incised
rosemal design. 52309 $140
The strikingly beautiful Final Light at Sea was
painted by Minnesota/Nevada artist Floyd Johnson.
The print’s Deco process gives it the look and feel of
an oil painting; no glass is needed.
It’s complemented well by a rustic,
wood-like frame.

Tove Jansson
On this centenary of Tove Jansson’s birth, we celebrate all things Moomin.
Jansson’s first Moomin book appeared in 1945. The characters enjoyed life on a Finnish island much like
the one where Jansson grew up, but they also experienced sadness and learned to accommodate
one another’s quirks. The books resonated with a world rebuilding after a war, and the overall message
that the simple pleasures and being kind to one another make life worth living are meaningful still.

The Troll Wondering How Old He Is
This high-quality print from Norway is one of Kittelsen’s
most famous and beloved works.
Image size is 10½ x 16½”. 53688 $45
Theodor Kittelsen 1857 – 1914
Say “troll,” and the image that comes to mind was probably infl uenced by the
art of Theodor Kittelsen. Kittelsen was a Norwegian artist who found the scenery
of his homeland “mysterious, romantic, and magnificent.” He incorporated his
realistic depictions of the natural world with his imaginative world of trolls and other
creatures of Norwegian folklore. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Kittelsen’s
death; he left a legacy of illustrations that still shape our images
of mythological creatures and inspire artists today.
