It was amazing.
What sort of jobs did you get?
I had three different jobs. I was a housekeeper, and I did some waitressing, and some
office work as well. As a housekeeper, the work was quite hard and boring, but my
colleagues were so friendly, and we only worked in the morning, so we could go to
the beach in the afternoon, which was great.
That’s really cool.
What about the other job?
I waitressed in Byron Bay, and there were loads of tourists, so the tips were really,
really good. But the work was quite hard, it was long hours. And office work was okay,
it was just nine to five.

GRAMMAR: PAST SIMPLE FOR REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS
The past simple is used to talk about the past.
The past simple is the same for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they).
Here are the rules for regular verbs:
Most regular verbs → add -ed
For example:
work → worked
stay → stayed
Regular verbs ending in –e → add -d
For example:
dive → dived
like → liked
Regular verbs ending in a consonant + vowel + consonant → double the last consonant
For example:
stop → stopped
travel → travelled
Regular verbs ending in consonant + -y → -y becomes -i and add –ed
For example:
study → studied
marry → married
There are no rules for irregular verbs. You need to learn them by heart. For example:
give → gave
go → went
see → saw

I studied Accounting before I went to Australia, but I stopped. I want to go back to school in
September, but I’m not sure yet what I’m going to do.

Why did you decide to break off your studies?

I thought accounting was really boring. I hate sitting at a desk all day. I prefer doing something
more active. But I don’t know yet what exactly. How about you?

I’m working as a sales assistant at the moment. In September I’m going
back to college, to study Electrical Engineering.

Cool. Why did you choose that subject?

I like doing something technical. I also think that there are good career
opportunities for electricians. When you decide what you want to
study, you should keep that in mind too.

I don’t care about having a great career. For me, the most important thing is that I
enjoy my work. I want to find a job that suits me.

That’s important too, I agree. But what if your studies are really interesting, but you can’t
find a job after leaving school? There’s a lot of unemployment at the moment, and it’s not
always easy for young people to find a job.

Hi, I’m Emily Fox. I’m 19 years old and I’ve just got
back from a working holiday in Australia. While I was

and in an office. Before I went to Australia, I was

My Travels

During my working holiday in Australia, I had many
wonderful experiences. My favourite experience was
our boat trip to the Whitsunday Islands. We chose

GRAMMAR: COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
Countable nouns are nouns you can count. You can make them plural.
For example: one chair, two chairs.
Uncountable nouns are words you can’t count. You can’t make them plural.
For example: money.
I’s okay to say: I’ve got some money.
But you can’t say: I’ve got 2 moneys.

Working in Australia
CHAPTER
Emily:
My first job in Australia was housekeeping in a hotel.
I was really lucky and got this job through an advert
on a hostel notice board. Although the work wasn’t
glamorous, I was working with great people and we
had lots of fun. The best part was that the work was
mainly in the mornings, so we had time to enjoy the
beach in the afternoons!
I also worked as an office worker for a while. It was
easy to get an office job because I already had some
experience and I studied Accounting before I came
to Australia. The work itself was a bit boring, but it
made it possible for me to live like a ‘normal’ person,
working from nine to five, and to meet more locals.
