H
aving just completed our 50th, it is clear that Seabury Hall has
transitioned from a new and emerging “young” school to a maturing and
seasoned college preparatory school that is deeply respected by all of its
constituents. This past year has been one of unmatched success in all
areas of school life from the academic achievements of the students to
the remarkable athletic and artistic successes. What is most important
is that the school is clearly defined in accordance with its mission and
reaches all students in the development of their minds, bodies and souls.
As you peruse this publication, you will have the opportunity to celebrate
the successes, but you will also be reminded of the work that has been
accomplished over the past 50 years to bring us to this level of success.
Every independent school is built on a foundation that is the aggregation
of an inspirational vision and a commitment on the part of those who
were the founders. One must accept tremendous risk when starting an
independent school, but if the foundation is solid, then the opportunity
for long-term success occurs. Katherine Cooper, the Episcopal Church,
the Melrose family and the founding Board of Trustees laid a remarkable
foundation and as the years progressed and new leadership emerged,
the school continued to grow its program and garner a reputation as
an outstanding college preparatory
school. This maturing process created
stability that allowed us to expand our
beautiful campus, add stunning and
highly functional buildings, develop
an exceptional academic program and
create financial security that positions
the school for continued success.
The love,
energy, and
excitement
…
truly
reflects an
appreciation
for the past
and an
anticipation
for a future
filled with
promise.
p
It was clear to us as we celebrated our
50th anniversary, that Seabury Hall is
well positioned for outstanding success.
The love, energy, and excitement that were exhibited by the hundreds
of participants who shared in this week of celebration truly reflected
an appreciation for the past and an anticipation for a future filled with
promise. All who have been a part of Seabury Hall for this past 50 years
deserve to take a moment and simply feel a great sense of pride in what
has been accomplished.
Aloha,

School Highlights
What happens
when a group of
students come
together wanting to
change their world?
The Seabury Hall Math Team earned the highest overall score at the state Math Bowl. The
team placed first in the A-Division (smaller schools) and also outscored AA-Division (large schools). It was the first
time in the 36-year history of the event that a team from the small-school division earned the highest overall score.
They create the first Maui TEDxYouth
conference. Seabury Hall was proud
to host this conference which brought
together inspiring student speakers
from the Maui community to share their
inspiring ideas. The goal of the event was
to empower the youth of Maui, the leaders
of tomorrow, who will make the world a
better place.

Seabury Hall is proud to announce the
newest established endowment fund –
The Maunalei Scholarship Fund.
The Maunalei Scholarship Fund was established in memory
of Emalia Alexandra Brown ’89 Guard, to honor and
celebrate the Hawaiian values of intelligence, heart and
spirit expressed so well in her life.
This scholarship is given to a deserving student of Hawaiian ancestry who
wishes to take full advantage of the opportunities that Seabury Hall offers for
college and life preparation. This student must demonstrate a commitment
to Hawaiian personal and cultural values and a willingness to enrich Seabury
Hall by sharing those values.

Maunalei Notes
Ginny Morriss ’67 Pressler
Distinguished Alumni
Award
Upon receiving the
Distinguished Alumni
Award, Ginny said, “I
don’t know that I am
any more deserving
of this award than
any of the rest of you. Ginny Morriss 1967
We all have different
accomplishments. I am willing to accept
this recognition in honor of my late parents
who understood the importance of a
good education, and in honor of Charlotte
and Roger Melrose who achieved the
impossible in getting this school together
so successfully. I am not sure I would
have achieved what I have without the
outstanding education that I received here
at Seabury.”
Ginny is currently the Executive
Vice President of Strategic Business
Development for Hawaii Pacific Health.
She is at the forefront of the fight to
improve the quality of care and to confront
the challenges of what she views as a
“health care system fragmented and
inefficient and driven by a perverse
payment mechanism
that rewards volume
over value and quality.”

“Distinguished Alumni”
award during a
presentation in the

Lee Kajiyama Carson shared how fun it was for
her to see everyone at Seabury’s 50th anniversary! “The week was amazing, wonderful, fun and
educational. I am definitely going to be there
for our 50th class reunion in three years. Let’s all
plan to go and get a really big house together!”
Lee has been retired from Bank of Hawaii now
for 11 years, and she and husband Peter have
done a lot of traveling, volunteering, and spending time at their townhouse in Phoenix, AZ,
where they helped care for twin granddaughters
who were born prematurely in 2008 with major
health
issues.
“They
are
doing
very
well
now
and
love coming to Hawaii. We celebrated the birth
of our newest granddaughter in April. I am a
cancer survivor and feel blessed to experience
every single day.”

“After graduating in 1968, life has been a whirlwind of career, family, faith, and dear friends,”
reports Kay Cross Harper. “Seabury Hall life
was an incredible experience, and how fabulous
to be able to attend the 50th anniversary of
Seabury over the 4th of July. So appreciated the
dinner given to the first 5 graduating classes - intimate and meaningful! It was also special to be
with Charlotte Melrose and family, and recall all
they and others did to help shape our lives, and
contribute to the firm foundation of the school.”
Maui attorneys and brothers Kevin Jenkins and
Brian Jenkins ‘71 are moving their law offices
to the Wailuku Executive Center at 24 North
Church Street. Says Brian, “Ours is the only law
firm in the country where all of the attorneys
attended Seabury Hall.”
Karen Hewitt Guest is “Happily living in
Northern California with my husband Chris. I’m
still working but hoping to see retirement in the
near future. My oldest daughter Candace and
her husband Michael are living in San Diego. Our
daughter Carrie, children and new husband, Ricky,
have moved to the Houston area — much further
away than I would like because I don’t get to see
my granddaughter and grandson as often!

Portland, OR resident LaVelle Byers Allen was
inspired by all the solar panels she saw in Haiku
during her visit to Maui for the 50th Anniversary, and returned home and ordered solar
panels for her new roof. “I’ve thought about this
for years and am finally making it happen. I feel
so grown up!”
After attending the week long 50th anniversary
Seabury celebration, Kathleen Hull Rutledge
traveled on to Singapore and Thailand where
she was the guest of friends. She was treated to
a day of riding elephants, visiting remote tribes
in northern Thailand and dining on the floating
market in Bangkok. “This was my retirement
present to myself and was a solo adventure.”
She and husband Rich celebrated their 39th
anniversary in May.
