Another positive event has happened, we now
have 2 more LEO Club in our district. Thanks to
Lion Rob Rand, Franklin Middle School LEO
Club sponsored by the Minneapolis Downtown
Next Generation Club and Northeast Middle
School LEO Club sponsored by the Minneapolis
Northeast Lions Club.
I attended the MD5M Convention April 21st
through April 24th at Mankato, Mn. Had a great
time seeing all the Lion friends I have met through
the years. IPIP Joe Preston was the International
Guest and gave a great and inspirational talk to
more than 500 Lions in attendance, he even sang a
couple of songs he wrote. I think he has a good
voice. I believe there were 24 clubs from 5M-5
represented at the MD5M Convention. At the convention the MD5M Governors presented their
check from the District Governors Challenge to
LCIF. 5M-5 Governor said he would donate
$500.00 if all clubs in 5M-5 would donate a minimum of $50.00 and we had almost every club do
that so I wrote a check for $500.00 and gave it to
IPIP Joe Preston.
This past year I asked the Cabinet if it would be ok
to ask clubs to make a donation to Camp Confidence for a handicap golf cart and they gave me
permission to begin asking. Camp Confidence is
located on Lake Sylvan near Brainerd, Mn. They
have 140 acres of beautiful woods and the camp is
for those that have cognitive and physical disabilities. Hennepin county residents spend over 1,000
camper days at the camp every year. The problem
is when the campers and staff want to go fishing
they have a path that is steep but will not allow a
vehicle to drive on it. When trying to navigate a
wheel chair down the steep path it become a little
touchy and by having a handicap golf cart they
could hold 2 wheel chairs and up to 6 passengers.
This cart would make it much safer to deliver the
campers to the boat dock. I’m asking as a district if
the clubs would make a donation for a golf cart
that cost $13,000 to build. There is a company in
Brainerd that can make this handicap golf cart and
provide service as needed. I’m hoping that club in
5M-5 will take this on as a district wide project.
Here is what the handicap golf cart looks like.
Please make your check out to Camp Confidence
and in the memo put Golf Cart. Mail the checks to
me at Bill Moore, 3438 Fremont Ave N, Mpls, Mn.
55412, I will deliver them to Camp Confidence. We
serve those that are less fortunate then ourselves.

The last 10 months have been very rewarding
serving as your District Governor. We have 2
months left in Lions year of 2015/2016 and it
would be great if our district would have 1,400
member for this Lions year, we are so close to
that magic number at 1,394, only 6 away!!!! All I
ask is do your best to achieve that goal!!

The Northfield LEO Club presented a session called “World
War II Heroes”. At this session there were 15 different
WWII Veterans. Navy Chief Charles Séhe is a Pearl Harbor
survivor. Chief Séhe served on the USS Naveda (BB-36),
saw action on D-day, the invasion of Normady and witnessed
the 1st flag raising at Iwo Jima. We had the honor of
“coining” this WWII veteran. By the looks of him, I think
that hand to hand exchange made both our days.
Post your events in the informer and on the website, so all
can see and come to participate.
Please keep me posted of your upcoming club events at
[email protected], as I would like to see your clubs in
action.
Remember, any opportunity you get, ASK 1!
As always, I look forward to serving all of you.

The Edina Lions had a scheduled
visit by PDG Lion Sonjia Wagner. She talked about Cub Club and
how all lions clubs can benefit from
these little
ones and to recruit young families into
Lions. Lion Sonjia got 10's in all categories I was to rate her on. (unanimous
vote by the Edina Lions). She received a standing ovation by an all
male club. (we are going to change
that). The Edina Lions are ready for
changes and looking forward to the
changes, ahead.

Special Olympics Opening Eyes at the
Summer Games
The Summer Games of Special Olympics
Minnesota are coming up fast. We are asking
Lions to reserve some time on June
23,24,and 25 to come to Apple Valley's Eastview High School. The Lions will be assisting
with vision screening of the athletes.
The tasks are easy to learn as we assist the
doctors and other eye care professionals. Many Lions will do the initial screening
with a simplified eye chart. Other tasks
could include registration, directing athletes
or escorting them to the next station, or
assisting in other ways. We encourage Lions
before or after their shift to watch some of
the competitions going on. It is amazing to
see the level of competition occurring. It is
even more amazing to see all the smiles and
good times happening all around.
This event is a good opportunity for a club to
do a service project. It is set up and organized, just sign up and show up; it can help
locally in that there are athletes from all over
the state; there are other events and competitions going on to make it more interesting. Maybe your club could put a group together or come alone. You could bring a
friend or family member. Teens are very
welcome and have helped greatly in the past.
in the morning, about 2 hours. Friday, June
24, screening in the morning and afternoon. Saturday, June 25, screening in the
morning, followed by dismantling. There will
be 2 shifts, one in morning, one in the afternoon, each about 4-5 hours. One shift on
Saturday, about 5 hours. You can sign up for
more than one shift if interested.

The Summer Games will have competition in
Trach and Field, Volleyball, Gymnastics, and
Tennis. There will be about 1500 athletes
competing as well as coaches, families and
friends. In addition, there will be demonstrations and activities for healthier
lifestyles, and fun stops, like a dance tent
that is always popular.
Eastview High School is located in Apple Valley, just east of Cedar Av on 140th St. A
map is included. Thursday, June 23, set up

Can Do Canines’ Lions Newsletter
Submission – May, 2016
So to help with her many issues she applied to Can
Do Canines and was paired with a two year-old
black goldador (a golden retriever/Labrador retriever mix) named Justeen. The ability for Justeen
to hand her items has been an incredible gift.
“Justeen is constantly picking things up off of the
floor for me, because I’m always dropping them,”
Kelli explains.
In addition to picking up dropped items and helping to unload the groceries at home, Justeen also
helps Kelli feel more comfortable in public. Now
that she has an assistance dog, she says she receives immediate assistance.
Thanks to the support of Lions Clubs across 5M,
Can Do Canines continues to train specially trained
dogs for people with disabilities and provide them
free of charge to those in need.
One recent recipient of a Can Do Canines assistance dog is Kelli Heimerl. Kelli now has a greater
sense of freedom, independence and peace of mind
thanks to Mobility Assist Dog Justeen. Read their
story below.
KELLI HEIMERL & MOBILITY ASSIST DOG JUSTEEN
“They can see that I’m shaking, and for some people, seeing Justeen validates that I have an illness,”
Kelli says. “Very few people know what Parkinson’s
is, so she’s become an incredible ambassador for
me.”
Kelli is overwhelmed with thanks to everyone who
helped raise, train, and eventually bring the two of
them together.
“I appreciate every moment of the last one year, ten
months and twenty eight days Can Do Canines gave
me,” she says. “Justeen is the most kind, patient,
and loving dog.”
Kelli Heimerl of Chaska, Minn. had been searching
for the official diagnosis to her symptoms for a long
time. It began when she simply felt a “little off” in
various ways, but she couldn’t quite put the pieces
together. After consulting with various doctors, an
official diagnosis was finally reached—Parkinson’s
disease.
Kelli struggles with balance and muscles contortions, and sometimes, she has trouble getting all
the words out which she means to say. “I can spell
the word, I can see the word, but I can’t exactly
speak the word,” Kelli says. “Pretty much if it’s a
symptom of Parkinson’s, I’ve been blessed with it.”
