Mission Statement: CROSS is committed to serving families & individuals
in times of need. Employees, volunteers and member churches see it as their fundamental task
to administer Christian mercy to everyone who seeks help. We must encourage with words that
create hope and with deeds that bring joy. May we be compassionate and prophetic critics of waste
and injustice.

It was 16 years ago that Vic
Saldana hired me as Assistant
Coordinator of CROSS Food
Shelf. I knew little about
“food shelves” and even less
about the Osseo Lions.
A congenial, responsible
businessman, Vic was
dedicated to his faith, family

and community service. Vic
readily accepted his responsibility to CROSS and to
the Osseo Lions, which led to his receiving of the
prestigious Melvin Jones Award in April 2006.
Through the years, I have witnessed the profound
effects of a community’s commitment to support each
other; from the many individuals of the Lions Clubs,
to the CROSS volunteers, to the other community
members.
This has been a year of adjustment for many
families: recognizing abilities, taking advantage of
opportunities, and harnessing confidence and courage
to overcome adversity. We all are in need of support,
guidance and compassion at some time in our lives.
At CROSS, we care. I have seen the power of a
casual greeting or words of kindness to provide
strength and hope.
It has been my pleasure to serve with all of you
who have made a difference in the lives of so many
families. May the Lord continue to bless our mission
as we strive to help our neighbors in need.
A Ray of Hope
CROSS (Christians Reaching Out in Social Service) We are a non–profit
organization established in 1977 to provide food and clothing to those in
temporary need. We serve the Northwest Hennepin County communities
of West Champlin, Corcoran, Dayton, Maple Grove, Osseo and Rogers.
We are supported entirely by church, county, individual and community
donations. Together, we have gained respect and developed a good
working relationship with churches, schools, foundations, organizations,
individuals and the community.

We Provide
Food Shelf
Three to five days of food and bakery goods
per month (about 80 pounds for a family of
four). Although 500+ families are helped
monthly, more than 1,000 families in NW
Hennepin County are registered for CROSS
services.
Free, used clothing to families.
Household Items
Furniture and larger items are posted on our
bulletin board as they become available.
Meals On Wheels
Hot meals delivered to the home–bound,
Monday through Friday (a small fee is
charged).
Financial Assistance
On a limited time basis.
Holiday Programs
Christmas and Easter food baskets,
Christmas Toys for Tots and Teens.
Special Occasions
Easter baskets…school supplies…birthday
treats…turkey with all the trimmings at

Osseo Senior High School.

Church of the Open Door organized a food drive during the March Food
Campaign. Their efforts collected 6,000 pounds to help local families.
The Annual CROSSWALK for Hunger event was held on September 17 and

CROSS Board President
I love this community… What is a community? It is a unified body
of people with common interests. They share ideas, resources and
information. There is a common thread connecting everyone, allowing
the community to help members of the community in times of
even the deepest needs. Those of whom the community serves and
helps meet their needs also give much; A smile, a thankful heart, a
grateful spirit and kind words provide more strength with which the
community uses to bond as a whole.
Our volunteers are the heart of the CROSS Food Shelf. They portray
community efforts by giving of themselves so unselfishly, knowing
how important they are in the whole scheme of the CROSS Food Shelf.
They represent a hallmark of community sharing of time and deeds.
Thank you volunteers and Char for keeping CROSS running smoothly
each year.
We are blessed with support from our churches, schools and
community members. We are so thankful for all of them. We have had
new fundraising venues that were established in 2011 to also play a
large part of the funding needed to maintain CROSS. We had a dinner
at Maynard’s in Rogers, and a breakfast at Malone’s in Maple Grove.
Both were very successful. We continually look for new partnerships in
this way.
The board of directors has worked tirelessly, visiting other food shelf
operations always looking for ideas to improve the effectiveness of
CROSS. They also tackled some challenging issues and have met them
pretty much head–on.
Our Meals On Wheels division has grown with the great leadership
of Stephanie Lehman and Susan Gregory, working tirelessly to
improve our service. Meals On Wheels does marvelous work, serving
our community seniors and disabled persons. Volunteer drivers
deliver all the meals, covering many miles in the process. What a
beautiful image of service this gives us.
It is a joy to be serving CROSS Food Shelf. I look forward to the
challenges and rewards that await us in the coming year. Let’s continue
to serve one another with gladness.

We serve over 550 families monthly. As of November 2011, there
were more than 510,000 Minnesotans receiving food support—more
people than the combined populations of Minneapolis and Duluth.
According to a September 2011 report by the U. S. Department of
Agriculture, 10.3% of Minnesotans live in households that sometimes
struggle to get enough food. The poverty rate ($22,350 for a family of
four) used to determine federal and state benefits, makes it difficult
for families to qualify for many forms of assistance. However, we
assist any who feel they are truly in need of help.
