exactly what happens when good
cells go bad. Please note that
with our shorter Focus series, you
must attend all three of the first
classes and have your “Pathway to
Wellness” card punched to earn
the free Lunch & Learn. Plus, don’t
miss the many great opportunities
in our Calendar of Events. We have
the classes, events and trips to help
make this your most informative
and memorable summer yet!
TriHealth Cancer Institute navigates
patient care every step of the way
If you or a loved one has received a cancer
diagnosis, you want answers to your many
questions and assurance of receiving the
best possible care. At the TriHealth Cancer
Institute, we help our patients navigate
their care from diagnosis to treatment to
rehabilitation and recovery. “We focus all our
skills and resources on turning cancer
patients into cancer survivors,” explains
Cancer Institute Director Mark Witte.
Leading cancer experts throughout the TriHealth system meet at a weekly “tumor board”
to determine the best course of treatment for each patient. Working in conjunction with
the rest of your team, your physician will develop a treatment plan that incorporates your
input and addresses your specific needs. “Your plan outlines the process you’re going to
go through and sets up everything that’s necessary for it, from insurance to testing and
treatment,” Witte says.
To find a cancer doctor or for information on our 14 TriHealth Cancer Institute locations,
please call 513 451 4033 or visit TriHealth.com.

Seniority Insider
As the basic units of life, cells are responsible for every characteristic and function of the human
body. Normal, healthy cells multiply and divide as needed to keep our bodies healthy and then
die when the body no longer needs them. When this process goes awry, cells can change
or become damaged. Cancer occurs through the uncontrolled growth of these abnormal or
malignant cells or when the cells do not die as they should. Cancerous cells can develop in
almost any organ or tissue, such as the lung, colon, breast, skin, bones or nerve tissue.
The good news is there are steps you and your family can take to reduce the risk
of developing cancer:
• Eating a healthy diet
• Exercising regularly
• Limiting alcohol
• Maintaining a healthy weight
• Minimizing your exposure to radiation
and toxic chemicals
• Not smoking or chewing tobacco
• Reducing sun exposure, especially if you burn easily
Experts from TriHealth and our TriHealth Cancer Institute will present this fascinating Focus
series of classes. From stress to heredity to diet, we will learn what can make good cells go bad
and how we can prevent our own cells from changing. Register today for Seniority’s upcoming
Focus classes, listed on Page 2.

Reservations for ALL “Focus On” classes should be made by calling 513 569 6400.
When the Balance Is Interrupted
Stress = Inflammation = Cell Damage
James Maher, MD, PhD, of the TriHealth Cancer Institute
will share his insight and research into what triggers cancer.
This fascinating kick-off class will provide information for
everyone as Dr. Maher begins our educational journey of
how good cells go bad.
Research has shown that persistent inflammation often
precedes the onset of many diseases, including cancer.
This is particularly true during the aging process. Find out
how activities such as stretching, yoga and tai chi can help
reduce the development of persistent inflammation as we age.

How To Live To Be 100
What Should I Eat?
In addition to not smoking, limiting alcohol, exercising and
eating right, learn what other steps to take that possibly
could increase your lifespan. TriHealth Genetic Counselors
will discuss how to reduce your cancer risk even if the
disease runs in your family.
It’s not easy to change decades of habits. Try eating more
veggies and less steak. Increase the variety of food colors on
your plate. Start with these little changes and be amazed at
how much better you feel.

Research study aims to help prevent cancer
The TriHealth Cancer Institute has partnered with the American Cancer Society to
help with a new, grassroots cancer research study. The goal of the study, called Cancer
Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), is to learn more about cancer in an effort to prevent the
disease. You, your family members and friends are encouraged to participate in this
effort if you meet these requirements:
• Have never been diagnosed with cancer
(not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer)
• Are between 30 and 65 years old
• Are willing to complete follow-up surveys at home for the next 20 to 30 years
Local enrollment will take place on Thursday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kroger
General Office (Downtown), 3rd Floor Conference Room. To schedule an appointment
or learn more about the study, visit CincinnatiCPS3.org or call 1 888 604 5888.

New TriHealth facilities expand access to care
Priority Care locations are now open on Glenway
and in Mason.
TriHealth Priority Care offers physician-staffed, walk-in care
for less-than-emergent issues, such as cough, cold, asthma
or flu; broken or fractured bones; minor burns; and infections.
It also has on-site X-ray and lab testing services. Priority Care
supplements normal physician practice hours and provides care
to patients who do not have a primary care physician, referring
them to a TriHealth provider for primary or specialist care. No
appointment is needed, and the co-pay is similar to that of a
physician office visit.
Priority Care services are located on Cincinnati’s west side at
6139 Glenway Ave., and in Mason at 8350 Arbor Square Drive,
just off Mason-Montgomery Road. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends; also open most
holidays. Glenway can be reached at 513 346 3399 and Mason
at 513 346 3888.
TriHealth brings services and physicians together
in Anderson.
TriHealth diagnostic services and specialty physicians have
come together under one roof on Cincinnati’s east side.
TriHealth Anderson offers a variety of services in one
location, including imaging, cardiac and vascular testing,
pulmonary function testing, and laboratory services. The
TriHealth Heart Institute cardiologists and vascular surgeons,
and the TriHealth Surgical Institute surgeons also will have
offices in the same building.
4
You will find TriHealth Anderson at 7777 Beechmont Ave., just
a turn off Beechmont onto Asbury Road (building is situated
behind Buffalo Wild Wings). Bringing everything together in
this one location provides convenience for patients and makes
highly coordinated care more accessible to this community.
For more information about TriHealth Anderson, visit
TriHealth.com or call 513 346 1000.

Seniority Healthy Hint
Be Sunscreen Savvy
Sunscreens can be classified into two types: chemical and
physical. Chemical sunscreens contain special ingredients
that filter and reduce the sun’s ultraviolet A and B rays, the
ones that cause skin to tan or burn. Chemical sunscreen
absorbs rather than deflects these rays, which means it must
be applied frequently. Physical sunscreens, or sunblocks,
contain ingredients such a titanium dioxide and zinc oxide
that physically block ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Sunblocks
provide protection against both UVB and UVA light.
And don’t forget the SPF or Sun Protection Factor. If you
normally burn in 10 minutes, an SPF of 15 lets you stay in the
sun for 15 x 10 minutes or 150 minutes. Unfortunately, most
people use much less than the recommended one ounce
of sunblock for full protection. Applying a higher number
SPF offers more protection, but you still must use enough to
soak up those harmful rays.
