HOPS
Comptoir agricole is a cooperative that has been furthering the interests of
thousands of farmers in Alsace since 1905. However, the experience of Alsace hop
growers has been handed down over the generations for over two centuries.
Comptoir agricole fosters the development of hop growing in Alsace with a consistent
objective: maintaining the high quality of fine aroma hops from Alsace.
Hops have been present in Alsace since
the end of the 19th century
and are certainly the most iconic
product from our region.
Generations of farmers have joined
cooperatives to offer aromatic hop varieties
that meet the requirements of breweries
in an expanding market.
Today, we are proud to offer breweries
varieties that are adapted to our soil
and climate and are the result
of our research program, to allow them
to make unique high-quality brews.

ALSACE, A TERROIR AND A CLIMATE
FOR THE MOST REFINED HOPS.
Alsace enjoys an exceptional geographic location, close to the centre of Europe. The
city of Strasbourg is the seat of several European institutions including the European
Parliament and the Council of Europe. Both are symbols of a resolutely European
future, which has become a key component of the cultural identity of Alsace.
The first domesticated hop plants appeared in Alsace, near Oberhoffen-sur-Moder in
about 1775, thanks to the work of a churchman with a passion for botany, Pastor
Charles Ehrenpfort. He created a truly local market.
But François Derendinger, a German brewer from neighbouring Baden-Württemberg
who had settled in Haguenau, was responsible for the first ‘modern’ hop fields of
Alsace.
TODAY, COMPTOIR AGRICOLE
PROMOTES:
• The development of sustainable hop farming.
• Certification and traceability from the original hop field to the brewery.
• New variety development programs.
• Technology monitoring.
THE TRUE
STAR
OF THE BREWING
REVOLUTION
Comptoir agricole has been supporting farmers, particularly
hop producers, for over 100 years. Generation after generation,
the cooperative has created close links with the whole farming
industry of Alsace, contributed to its development, and along
with this, a close bond of trust and respect, and the transparent
guarantee of quality has grown.
ALSACE HOPS CULTIVATE
INNOVATION AND TRADITION,
NATURALLY.
Beer drinkers are becoming more like wine lovers, and looking for
exceptional produce, identifiable terroirs and tastes to enjoy and
share. With their passion for creation, their search for the best ingredients and the legitimacy of natural products, beer-makers are
artisans and artists, cultivating the pleasure of discovery and sharing. In the industry, innovation lies in the ability to
leverage ancestral experience to meet new expectations that are increasingly complex.
The varieties of Alsace hops offered by Comptoir agricole help create the best special and aromatic beers of today
and tomorrow.
Hops are to beer what grape varieties are to wine. Hailing from a terroir that is as rich and specific as that of Alsace,
Comptoir agricole is proud to present the best vintages of aroma hops. As the brewing revolution unfolds, quantity is
giving way to quality and standardised products are being replaced by taste and diversity. Beer is becoming a product
that is tasted and enjoyed, and achieving refinement.

OF THE EXCLUSIVE
VARIETIES
OF COMPTOIR AGRICOLE
ARAMIS
STRISSELSPALT
BARBE ROUGE
Strisselspalt is the variety that has been produced in
Alsace through the ages. Its very fine, mild and balanced aroma and its spicy, woody and floral notes
make it a high-quality hop.
Barbe Rouge is the third variety to result from the
research and development programme. Its red fruit
aromas give off notes of strawberry and cherry. It is
related to Strisselspalt and may be used for its aromas
or for bittering, with an alpha acid rate close to 8%. Its
subtle notes of strawberry sorbet when used with the
cold hopping process will surprise you.

Triskel is characterised by fruity, citrus and floral
aroma notes. This variety has an aroma not unlike its
mother Strisselspalt, with a fruitier note it gets from
its father. It also has a higher alpha acid content and
offers improved resistance to disease. Its concentrated
oils give it a fine aromatic power.
MENTHOL
CITRUS

SPICY
Aramis has a very fine aroma. Its notes are spicy, mild,
slightly herbal and citrusy, which makes Aramis multi-dimensional, yet refined. This is the first new cultivar to result from the variety research programme. Its
aroma is not unlike that of Strisselspalt, but it boasts a
higher alpha acid content.

HOPS FROM ALSACE
INNOVATION
VARIETY RESEARCH
Comptoir agricole acts in favour of the reduction of the
use of plant-protective products in order to develop a
sustainable approach to the environment. We also work
to assure certification and traceability from the hop field
to the brewery.
The main stages of traceability include:
- Automated receipts in order to address the requirements
of certification: sampling, moisture measurement, quality
analysis, weighing, labelling and palletising, etc.
- Storage in optimum conditions. In order to keep the aromatic qualities of its products intact, Comptoir Agricole
favours storage in refrigerated halls with constant 5°C
temperature throughout the process.
Technology monitoring:
Comptoir Agricole carries out impact studies to prevent
the propagation of pests, reduce disease and the use of
plant-protective products. It gives hop planters advice
about farming practices and innovative technical solutions to allow them to stay at the leading edge of technology at all times.
BIOLOGICAL PROGRAMME
QUALITY
ORGANIC
PROGRAMME
Comptoir Agricole offers organically grown hops,
including ARAMIS, STRISSELSPALT, TRISKEL,
TRADITION and BREWERS GOLD, and the bittering
hop NUGGET. They are produced to meet the expectations of organic breweries.
Organic farming involves the non-use of manmade chemicals or GM material, recycling organic material and
biological pest control. Approval as an organic product
is regulated, and controlled by an independent certifying
body: Ecocert France.
VARIETY RESEARCH PROGRAMME
Since 2001, Comptoir Agricole is investing in a vast variety research programme in order to adapt to the expectations of customers. The aim is to create one or more
new hop varieties with innovative aromatic properties,
while offering a more pronounced alpha acid content.
A second goal is to make the variety more resistant
to disease and thus reduce the use of plant-protective
products.
ARAMIS in 2011, TRISKEL in 2012, BARBE ROUGE
in 2014 were the first cultivars to be delivered by the
programme.
