The greeting of the Risen Christ to his disciples on the evening of
Easter, “Peace be with you!” (Jn 20:19), continues to resound in us
all. Peace, especially during this Easter season, remains the desire
of so many people who suffer unprecedented violence of
discrimination and death simply because they bear the name
“Christian”. Our prayer is all the more intense and becomes a cry
for help to the Father, who is rich in mercy, that he may sustain the
faith of our many brothers and sisters who are in pain. At the
same time, we ask for the grace of the conversion of our own
hearts so as to move from indifference to compassion.
Saint Paul reminds us that we have been saved through the
mystery of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. He is the
Reconciler, who is alive in our midst offering the way to
reconciliation with God and with each other. The Apostle recalls
that, notwithstanding the difficulties and the sufferings of life, the
hope of salvation which Christ has sown in our hearts nonetheless
continues to grow. The mercy of God is poured out upon us,
making us just and giving us peace.
Many question in their hearts: why a Jubilee of Mercy today?
Simply because the Church, in this time of great historical change,
is called to offer more evident signs of God’s presence and
closeness. This is not the time to be distracted; on the contrary, we
need to be vigilant and to reawaken in ourselves the capacity to
see what is essential.

This is a time for the Church to rediscover the meaning
of the mission entrusted to her by the Lord on the day
of Easter: to be a sign and an instrument of the
Father’s mercy (cf. Jn 20:21-23). For this reason, the
Holy Year must keep alive the desire to know how to
welcome the numerous signs of the tenderness which
God offers to the whole world and, above all, to
those who suffer, who are alone and abandoned,
without hope of being pardoned or feeling the
Father’s love. A Holy Year to experience strongly
within ourselves the joy of having been found by
Jesus, the Good Shepherd who has come in search of
us because we were lost. A Jubilee to receive the
warmth of his love when he bears us upon his
shoulders and brings us back to the Father’s house. A
year in which to be touched by the Lord Jesus and to
be transformed by his mercy, so that we may become
witnesses to mercy. Here, then, is the reason for the
Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the
favourable time to heal wounds, a time not to be
weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see
and to touch with their hands the signs of the
closeness of God, a time to offer everyone,
everyone, the way of forgiveness and reconciliation.
May the Mother of God open our eyes, so that we
may comprehend the task to which we have been
called; and may she obtain for us the grace to
experience this Jubilee of Mercy as faithful and
fruitful witnesses of Christ.

Resucitado a sus discípulos la tarde de Pascua: «Paz a
vosotros« (Jn 20,19). La paz, sobre todo en estas semanas,
sigue siendo el deseo de tantos pueblos que sufren la violencia
inaudita de la discriminación y de la muerte, sólo por llevar el
nombre de cristianos. Nuestra oración se hace aún más intensa y
se convierte en un grito de auxilio al Padre, rico en misericordia,
para que sostenga la fe de tantos hermanos y hermanas que
sufren, a la vez que pedimos que convierta nuestros corazones,
para pasar de la indiferencia a la compasión.
San Pablo nos ha recordado que hemos sido salvados en el
misterio de la muerte y resurrección del Señor Jesús. Él es el
Reconciliador, que está vivo en medio de nosotros para
mostrarnos el camino de la reconciliación con Dios y con los
hermanos. El Apóstol recuerda que, a pesar de las dificultades
y los sufrimientos de la vida, sigue creciendo la esperanza en la
salvación que el amor de Cristo ha sembrado en nuestros
corazones. La misericordia de Dios se ha derramado en nosotros
haciéndonos justos, dándonos la paz.
Una pregunta está presente en el corazón de muchos: ¿por qué
hoy un Jubileo de la Misericordia? Simplemente porque la
Iglesia, en este momento de grandes cambios históricos, está
llamada a ofrecer con mayor intensidad los signos de la
presencia y de la cercanía de Dios. Éste no es un tiempo para
estar distraídos, sino al contrario para permanecer alerta y
despertar en nosotros la capacidad de ver lo esencial. Es el
tiempo para que la Iglesia redescubra el sentido de la misión
que el Señor le ha confiado el día de Pascua: ser signo e
instrumento de la misericordia del Padre (cf. Jn 20,21-23). Por
eso el Año Santo tiene que mantener vivo el deseo de saber
descubrir los muchos signos de la ternura que Dios ofrece al
mundo entero y sobre todo a cuantos sufren, se encuentran solos
y abandonados, y también sin esperanza de ser perdonados y
sentirse amados por el Padre. Un Año Santo para sentir
intensamente dentro de nosotros la alegría de haber sido
encontrados por Jesús, que, como Buen Pastor, ha venido a
buscarnos porque estábamos perdidos. Un Jubileo para percibir
el calor de su amor cuando nos carga sobre sus hombros para
llevarnos de nuevo a la casa del Padre. Un Año para ser
tocados por el Señor Jesús y transformados por su misericordia,
para convertirnos también nosotros en testigos de misericordia.
Para esto es el Jubileo: porque este es el tiempo de la
misericordia. Es el tiempo favorable para curar las heridas,
para no cansarnos de buscar a cuantos esperan ver y tocar con
la mano los signos de la cercanía de Dios, para ofrecer a todos,
a todos, el camino del perdón y de la reconciliación.
Que la Madre de la Divina Misericordia abra nuestros ojos
para que comprendamos la tarea a la que estamos llamados; y
que nos alcance la gracia de vivir este Jubileo de la
Misericordia con un testimonio fiel y fecundo.

DRAWN INTO THE STORY
“We are witnesses!” The scripture readings for Easter
Sunday concentrate on details reported by
eyewitnesses. Listen carefully and you will be drawn
into the stories yourself. Peter reports the good works
Jesus did, his death on the cross, and his resurrection.
The passage from John’s Gospel has us running to the
empty tomb with Peter and John and peering inside
to see the cloths used to cover Jesus’ body. Psalm
118 sums up our response: “It is wonderful in our
eyes!”
What resurrection details do we see in our lives today?
How have we died to our old lives and been raised up
again with Jesus?
Let us pay attention to the new life around us. It is
wonderful in our eyes.

La Resurrección del Señor
Este es el día en que actuó el Señor, sea nuestra alegría y nuestro gozo. ¡Aleluya! En este
Año Jubilar de la Misericordia la Pascua continua
siendo la victoria de Dios misericordioso que levanta a Jesús “el testigo fiel, el primogénito de los
muertos y el soberano de los reyes de la tierra” (Apocalipsis 1:5), “el primogénito entre muchos
hermanos” (Romanos 8:29), venciendo a la muerte
en todas sus formas, en todos nos nosotros en la
familia humana. En el Evangelio de la Vigilia, este
año el de Lucas, mensajeros celestiales enviaron a
las mujeres a anunciar (24:6). En el Evangelio de
Juan, la tumba vacía igualmente “envía” a María
Magdalena, Pedro y el Discípulo Amado, quienes
creían aunque no entendían plenamente. Por último,
en la tarde de este domingo de Pascua, el Evangelio de Lucas que cuenta la historia de Emaús, nos
envía como “misioneros de misericordia”, asegurándonos que encontraremos al Señor Resucitado, hoy
y cada día en “la persona desconocida” que encontramos en nuestro camino de la vida, en la
“Palabra que hace que arda nuestros corazones” y
“al partir el pan” (ver Lucas 24:32, 35).

La tradición de los “huevos de Pascua”
Pascua para recordar que Jesús resucitó.
Poco a poco, otros cristianos tuvieron nuevas ideas,
como hacer huevos de chocolate y de dulce para
regalar en Pascua. Son esos los que regalamos hoy
en día.
El origen de esta costumbre viene de los antiguos
egipcios, quienes acostumbraban regalarse en ocasiones especiales, huevos decorados por ellos mismos. Los decoraban con pinturas que sacaban de las
plantas y el mejor regalo era el huevo que estuviera mejor pintado. Ellos los ponían como adornos en
sus casas.
Cuando Jesús se fue al cielo después de resucitar,
los primeros cristianos fijaron una época del año, la
Cuaresma, cuarenta días antes de la fiesta de Pascua, en la que todos los cristianos debían hacer
sacrificios para limpiar su alma. Uno de estos sacrificios era no comer huevo durante la Cuaresma.
Entonces, el día de Pascua, salían de sus casas con
canastas de huevos para regalar a los demás cristianos. Todos se ponían muy contentos, pues con los
huevos recordaban que estaban festejando la Pascua, la Resurrección de Jesús.
Uno de estos primeros cristianos se acordó un día
de Pascua de lo que hacían los egipcios y se le ocurrió pintar los huevos que iba a regalar. A los demás cristianos les encantó la idea y la imitaron.
