St. Cyril of Jerusalem Parish
From the Desk of Father Mac
During his public ministry, Jesus made it clear that one
condition for being his follower was bearing the cross. In
today’s gospel, as his passion draws near, he reiterates
this same condition: "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the
ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if
it dies, it produces much fruit." To be a Christian is to
be where Christ is: "Whoever serves me must follow
me, and where I am, there also will my servant be." And
where is Christ? He is always pouring out his life for others on the cross, giving himself for the good of others
through self-forgetful love. This is why in every Catholic
church there is to be a crucifix with the figure of Christ
hanging on it; to remind us of Christ's self-sacrifice on
Calvary.
If you walk into most Protestant churches, instead of a
crucifix, you’ll see an unadorned cross with no figure of
Jesus or a depiction of the Resurrected Christ. Protestants emphasize the power of the resurrection as assurance of life beyond the power of death. The use of a
bare cross emphasizes that Jesus overcame his suffering
and death and is Risen. Catholics, on the other hand,
while not denying the power and importance of the Resurrection to our faith, use the image of Christ on the
cross to emphasize the healing, redeeming power of
Christ's suffering and death. When we see Jesus on the
cross whenever we enter a church it serves as a constant
reminder to us that his Passion was an act of total love,
a complete giving of self—even to the point of death.
By contemplating Christ on the cross, we are also reminded of Christ’s invitation to pick up our own crosses
daily and follow him. As a consequence of sin, suffering
and death entered the picture. But we can find meaning
in our suffering by contemplating Christ’s Passion and
death on the Cross and uniting our suffering to his. We
also need to remember that God doesn’t leave us hanging. Through our baptism, we were baptized into
Christ’s death but also into his Resurrection as Saint
Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Romans. Although
we do have to undergo pain and suffering in this life,
our suffering is not without hope. Because Christ willingly offered his life for us on the Cross, we live always
in the promise of new life ahead, and that promise gives
us the courage and strength to bear our own crosses.
We adore you O Christ, and we praise you, because
by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world!
Today is Mayonnaise Sunday

Washing of the Feet Volunteers Needed
One of the highlights of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy
Thursday is the reenactment of Christ washing the feet of the
disciples. We are still looking for volunteers, male or female,
young or old, who wish to participate in the Holy Thursday
liturgy by having their feet washed. If you would like to be
part of the foot washing ritual please call the rectory.
Friendship Circle
The next dinner meeting of St. Cyril's Friendship Circle will be
at Café Cordiale at 6pm on Monday, March 23rd. The address is 14015 Ventura Boulevard, Sherman Oaks. Please call
Pat Kane at 818-784-4414 for reservations. All are welcomed
and encouraged to join the camaraderie.
Saint Faustina and the Message of Divine Mercy
Join us in the Parish Hall after Mass on Saturday, March 21, &
28th at 5:15pm for DVD presentations on the amazing connection between the image of Divine Mercy and the Shroud of
Turin. A 1st Class relic of St. Faustina will be present. For
more information please contact Claudia at 818-342-6626.
Join the school community on Tuesday, March 24th at Antonio’s Pizzeria, 13619 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks for a
fundraiser. 20% of your check will be donated to the school.
You can dine in or take out anytime from 11:00 am to 10:00
pm.
On Thursday, March 26th, the 7th Graders under the direction of Mrs. Susan Durham will be performing the Noh Stations of the Cross at 2:00 pm. Noh Theatre is a 500 year-old
theatrical practice using silent actors in large costumes and
white masks, moving so deliberately that they seem to float
before your eyes. There are also ninjas, dressed all in black
from head to toe, who carry and hold any objects involved in
the presentation. These ninjas are also silent, and after a few
minutes they "disappear" from your awareness, leaving you to
focus on each Station. Since there is no speaking by the Noh
Theatre actors, student narrators read reflections on each
station after it is introduced by a teacher or other adult
reader. The presentation is underscored by the solemn, moving music of Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings."
The parish community would like to thank Father Mac and the
Music Ministry Program, under the direction of Mr. William
Beck, for the beautiful and well attended Benediction of the
Most Holy Sacrament, which was accompanied by Sir John
Stainer's "The Crucifixion." This beautiful and sacred event
allowed our community to delve more deeply into the meaning of Lent, and experience the traditions which bring beauty
and goodness to our Faith and parish. We are especially
grateful to the many volunteers and participants who made
this event possible, especially Mr. Robert Brennan, the altar
servers: Max Grushesky, Daniel Berrelez, Vin Vara and our
exceptional choir, which includes our talented soloists:
Daniel Plaster, Mark Kelley, David Rakita, Aaron Sternberg
and Kyle Stephens. In addition to the many active participants, we would like to acknowledge and thank the many
individuals who support our Music Ministry Program through
their generosity in making events like this available to our
community. We pray that all our parishioners will continue
their Lenten journey with a renewed sense of the sacred as
we approach Holy Week and the great Feast of Easter.
