Russ Evans has been host of the Golf Exchange on ESPN radio for eleven years. Logging
more than 400 shows by his own count.

A family affair
Evans, Dolch make Golf Exchange
informative and comfortable
How cool would it be to host your own
radio show?
To make some calls and get stars such
as Nicklaus, Palmer and Player (for us oldsters) on the show. How neat is that?
Well for 11 years now, Russ Evans has
been spending his Sunday mornings (while
you are out playing golf), hosting the Golf
Exchange,” the only locally produced golf
radio program in South Florida. And in today’s world, where if you sneeze you could
be fired, his longevity on the air tells you
that the show is popular.
The program, presented by the Honda
Classic, which, by the way, starts Feb. 23
at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens,
has been a year-round fixture on local radio with golf writer Craig Dolch joining
the team four years ago. Together, the pair
presents topical information pertaining to
the golf world, both locally and nationally.
You never know who might be on the show.
Their guest list is long and illustrious
thanks in part to Dolch’s almost three decades writing about golf. Between the two
and their extensive phone/contact lists in
their cellular devices, they could probably
have any one of hundreds of PGA Tour,
LPGA Tour and Champions Tour players
on the show in minutes.
“My daughter thinks the coolest number
I have is Alice Cooper’s,” Dolch said after a
recent show in which my wife and I were
guests in the studio to see what transpires.
Cooper’s connection with Callaway (say
that three times fast) is why Dolch has the
singer’s number.
On this mid-January show, Meg Mallon
and Beth Daniel called in to discuss the annual pro-am charity fundraiser the former
LPGA legends host for Bethesda Hospital,
an event that Laurie Hammer and Bob
Murphy ran at Delray Dunes for 40 years.
Allianz tournament director Ryan Dillon was on the phone for another segment,
as was regular Rick Horrow to discuss
sports business.
LISTEN TO GOLF EXCHANGE
Golf Exchange can be heard on ESPN 760/106.3
FM every Sunday from 9-11 a.m. and on 640
radio in Fort Lauderdale.
For more information about The Eric Dolch
Children’s Encephalitis Foundation or to give a
tax-free donation, visit ericdolchfoundation.org
or email Eric’s father at [email protected].
Evans has been the host and producer of
the two-hour show since the first one aired
in January, 11 years ago. Not bad for a University of Florida architecture graduate.
“I actually was working with a firm in
Fort Lauderdale after I received my degree,”
Evans said during a commercial break in the
ESPN 106.3 FM studios west of I-95 in West
Palm Beach. “But one day I started thinking,
“Is this what I want to do for 40 years?”
The answer was obvious and he showed up
to become an intern at WQAM in Miami, his
first on-air role being the update announcer
for the Jim Mandich afternoon show.
“What a guy he was,” Evans said, paying
tribute to the former Miami Dolphin who
passed recently from cancer.
When the Golf Exchange went from an
ESPN-owned show to one that was locally
produced, Evans was tabbed and he has
been sitting in the same chair now for more
than 400 shows.
Dolch, another University of Florida
graduate (broadcasting), had been a guest
numerous times over the years. He was local,
living in Lake Worth and working as the golf
writer for The Palm Beach Post. When he was
offered a buyout after 28 years with the paper,
Evans was looking for someone to replace
original co-host Pat Rooney. They started
their fourth year together last month.

Power your game from the ground up
By Jeff Kroop
Unlike a pitcher who has the luxury of
loading off an elevated mound to drive a
90 mph plus fast ball or a sprinter who
can load and explode off a block us golfers must generate our power from the
ground up.
To do this we must engage the right
muscles responsible for stabilizing at address. So let me introduce you to one of
the key muscle groups called your “Gluteus Medius.”
Picture standing up in a canoe on the
water, it would be your inner leg (Adductor Muscles) and side (Abduction) butt
muscles having to engage to stabilize and
balance.
It is those side butt muscles that we
call your glute meds.
Okay, time to feel the love.
Secure a Mini Band just above your
ankles and position yourself shoulder
width apart in a nice athletic position
with a soft bend in your knee joint.
From there we take a strong step laterally powering out from the Glute Med’s.
5 to 10 steps to the right and repeat back
to the left.
I would recommend a couple sets every other day and begin with the yellow
mini bands.
As you get stronger graduate yourself to the green, blue and then the killer
blacks.

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy commits to Honda
Rory McIlroy, who returned to the No. 1
spot in the World Golf Ranking after winning the British Open and the PGA Championship in 2014, has committed to the 2015
Honda Classic, a PGA Tour event which will
be played Feb. 23-March 1 at PGA National
Resort & Spa.
McIlroy's surge back to elite form in the
final six months of the year was the talk of
golf. He has opened this year on fire as well,
and in his past six events, through Feb. 1, he
has finished 1-1-T2-T2-2-1.
“I definitely look back at 2014 with pride,”
said McIlroy, the 2012 Honda Classic champion. “Over the Christmas period there, I had
my first chance to really look back and reflect
on the year and even watch a few of the highlights at some of the tournaments that I won.
So it was nice to reflect. But I feel 2014 has
really set me up for another great year this
year. I feel like I'm coming into this year with
a nice little bit of momentum, and my game
is feeling good.”
As McIlroy was flying to the UAE for the
Abu Dhabi Championship last month, he decided to continue his early year tradition of
jotting down goals on his boarding pass. He
memorizes the list, tucks it away in his wallet
and doesn't look at it again until the end of
the year.
Along the way, McIlroy found that, as
great at 2014 ended up being, he has some
unfinished business from last year. He
wanted to win six times. He won four, partially due to a near-miss at the 2014 Honda
where he lost a four-man playoff to de-

“It's been working pretty well, so I'll try
to just keep doing what I've been doing and
keep to my routines. If I can do that, that will
give me the best possible chance to play well
that week.”
McIlroy played golf at Seminole Golf Club
in Juno Beach on Dec. 9 and didn't play his
next round until Jan. 5. He is fresh and motivated.
“It's time to look forward now and look
towards this season and try and accomplish
the goals that I set for myself at the start of
this year,” McIlroy said. “Winning tournaments, winning Majors. It's the little things
that you can do in practice and just in everyday life that can maybe help you get to that
and be a little bit more consistent and do a
couple more things.
“I'm looking forward to all of it. It's going
to be a good year, hopefully.”
The Honda awarded a record $2.55 million in charitable contributions in 2014, the
eighth straight year the event has increased
its charitable distribution to South Florida
Children's Charities.
The tournament also attracted 193,052
confirmed spectators between Tuesday's
practice round and Sunday's dramatic finish.

fending champion Russell Henley. But the
list also included winning just one Major.
McIlroy won two.
The 2015 goal list has seven items on it.
That is as much as McIlroy will reveal. But
winning The Honda would obviously help
him begin to accomplish at least the victory
total he has in mind. Another goal undoubtedly also will include winning The Masters,
which would give McIlroy a career Grand
Slam at the age of 25.
Only five golfers have won all four of
golf 's modern Majors at any time during
their careers – Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan,
Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
Bobby Jones is the only golfer to win all of
the Majors in the same year, but he did it in
1930, before he founded The Masters four
years later. The four Majors then were the
U.S. Open, British Open, U.S. Amateur and
British Amateur.
McIlroy knows the hype leading up to
Augusta will be enormous, particularly at
The Honda, the kickoff event to the East
Coast swing and the tournament where the
International media congregates to begin its
Masters buildup.
“There’s so much hype going into Augusta, anyway,” McIlroy said. “So it's just about
making sure I'm as well prepared as I possibly
can be going into that event, and I feel like
I've got a good routine and mental strategy
going into the Majors now where I try not to
let too much affect me. I try not to look at
too much stuff and really just go into my own
little world for those couple of weeks.

Barry: Is three straight its fate?
Most coaches talk about a second season when things have not gone well and
they want and hope for a huge turnaround.
Not the case with Barry University.
The Bucs, twotime defending national Division II
collegiate
champions, played their fall
schedule before the
holidays,
competing in four tournaments. They did not
have the total success
Miami-Dade Notes
they are accustomed
Bill Van Smith
to, although they did
win the Guy Harvey Invitational in Palm
Beach Gardens.
Barry’s finishes in the other three tournaments: a tie for fourth in the Brickyard
Crossing Intercollegiate in Indianapolis; a
fourth in the St. Leo Invitational in Dade
City, Fla.; and a fifth in the Otter Invitational in Seaside, Calif.
Time to worry, if not panic?
No way.
As of now, there is no sign of worry
for the team and Coach Jimmy Stobs, and
there is good reason. The Bucs haven’t been
playing with a full roster, and in particular
without its No. 1 player Adam Svensson,
who missed three of the tournaments as
he played in various international events,
including the prestigious World Amateur.
Playing winning golf is difficult when
you don’t have all of the clubs in your bag,
or in Barry’s case, all the players on the
course. Stobs, an even-keeled and quiet
sort, took it all in stride.
“The Fall season gave us an opportunity
to see our younger guys,” he said. “They got
valuable experience.”
That is bad news for upcoming Barry
opponents. Heading into the spring season,
the team should be at full strength.
And there is even a cautionary word
from Stobs.
“On paper, this could be the best team
we’ve ever had,” Stobs said.
He’s not boasting, because Stobs doesn’t
do that. He is just stating the facts.
“We won’t feel any pressure until we
get into the nationals,” Stobs said. Then
he tacked on a caveat. “OK, there’s a little
bit of pressure, but you don’t want to give
that up.”
Strangely, or maybe not so since Stobs
teaches work ethics rather than expectations, the team rarely talks about the possibility of three titles in a row.
“From others, we are constantly reminded of winning three,” Stobs said, “but
that is a good thing.”
Of the remainder of the season, Stobs
understated, “It will be fun to have all
five guys.”
That would be his five starters, and he
briefly described each of them:

Andrews for 20 years
and I have known Morgan since she was a
little girl,” Clivio said.
“I watched her since
she was 6 years old, and
after she lost her mom,
when she was 15, she
really wanted to do
something. She was 18

when she started this.”

The annual event
featured a dinner and auction, with items
that included a French wine trip to Provence.
The following day there was golf, highlighted
by a clinic featuring an all-star lineup of Pressel's fellow LPGA tour pros including Lexi
Thompson, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome, Jessica Korda, Gerina Piller, Cristie
Kerr and Annika Sorenstam. The pros also
played a hole with each foursome.
Clivio said more than 1,100 golfers have
taken part in the event since its inception
eight years ago and the event has netted $4.1
million to fight breast cancer. The past two
years, the event has raised $1.3 million, as
it easily topped the record $600,000 in 2014
with $751,622 this year. Clivio said 90 percent of the money comes from members of
the St. Andrews Country Club.
“It is amazing the time the LPGA players
put in to come out and do something for one
another,” said Clivio, 50, of Boynton Beach.
“What is more amazing is how they don’t just
come. They are involved. They get up on the
dance floor. They talk to the members. They
are there not just because Morgan asked
them. They want to be there.”
Clivio said two members of the club each
donated $25 million to Boca Raton Regional
Hospital, where the Lynn Cancer Institute is
home to the Morgan Pressel Center for Cancer Genetics.
“It is very personal,” said Clivio, whose
wife, Tara, who used to be sales and market-
ing director of the Honda Classic and now
heads Morgan’s Foundation. “This year, when
I handed her the check, she said she lost it.
People will say she had a great life because
she lives in St. Andrews, but no one has a
great life when they lose their mother at 15
years old. She has had to work through that
with such a positive attitude. ... These girls on
the LPGA Tour are incredible for what they
do for one another. It is like a sorority. I am
dumbfounded with what club members have
contributed. Every year we have gone up.”
The Morgan & Friends tournament also
funded the Kathryn Krickstein Pressel Mammovan, which was named in honor of Pressel's mother, who died in 2003.
"It's unbelievable the support that this
community has for our dream, our work
here," Pressel said. "We truly believe in curing
breast cancer. The St. Andrews community
has just been unbelievably supportive. That's
really the only way we could still be here eight
years later and have our best year yet."
Pressel started her career at St. Andrews
with grandfather Herb Krickstein and quickly became one of the country's top juniors, as
she qualified for the U.S. Women's Open at
age 12 and won three state high school championships at Saint Andrews School from
2003-05. She was state runner-up in 2002.
She also won the U.S. Women's Amateur
in 2005. Her first LPGA title was the Kraft
Nabisco Championship at age 18 in 2007,
making her the youngest in LPGA history to
win a major.
Clivio said he never thought a tragedy like
Pressel losing her mom to cancer would turn
into such a positive for the community.
“She is such a strong, hard-nosed kid,”
Clivio said. “I knew then it would be successful. When she wants something, she gets it.
“When she lost her mom, she lost part of
herself. … She believes her mom is looking
down on her and she is proud of what she is
doing.”
Participants received a gift bag that included a personally autographed photo from
Pressel to each golfer, thanking them for participating.
“This year we had 350 for the dinner, the

afternoon golf was sold out at 160 and the
morning golfers that play with the pros was
up to 28,” Clivio said. “Those golfers will
make a donation of $5,000 to play nine holes.
“When they are done, they go to the driving range to do an exhibition and have a barbecue on the driving range,” Clivio added.
“The members go out and play a shamble
event and the girls go out and hit shots and
play with all of the members while they are
playing. They come in for a cocktail dinner
for awards, a celebration and a check presentation. The night before there is a huge dinner with an auction and this year the auction
alone raised over $200,000 alone.”
AJGA win sends Kozan to PGA Tour
In just one week, King’s Academy sophomore Andrew Kozan, 16, took care of a few
future plans. Kozan, of Palm Beach Gardens,
verbally committed to attend Auburn University in 2017 and then went out and birdied
three of the last four holes on the final day to
finish with a 10-under par 206 to win the biggest event on the American Junior Golf Association Tour - the Puerto Rico Junior Open.
Kozan, who had never won an AJGA tour
event, finished his final round with a 5-under-par 67 to win by three shots at Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto
Rico. In doing so, Kozan earned an exemption to play in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico
Open on March 5-8 at the same course.
“I’m not really surprised at my scores this
year,” Kozan said of his improvement in the
past year. “They (have) dropped over the year
because I worked really hard on my game.”
Kozan, a six-time winner on the Florida
Junior Tour also won the 2014 Junior Honda
Classic and the Honda Classic High School
Invitational at PGA National, and finished
tied for fourth at the 2014 Future Masters.

The Fantastic Mr. Fazio
With more credits on Golf Digest‘s list of
“America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” and
Golfweek’s “America’s Best,” one could easily say that Tom Fazio is a great golf course
designer.
Fazio emphasizes
the premise that golf
courses should reflect
the natural beauty of
their environment. I
can think of few courses where that is reflected more than at The
Treasure Coast Notes Champions Club at
Summerfield in Stuart.
James Stammer
The
Champions
Club is the first public course awarded the
Audubon Signature Statuary designation
for its natural beauty and the way in which
the design communes with nature and
brings the golfers into the wildlife preserve
areas of South Florida.
While there are homes in the development, on more than half of the holes you
cannot even see a home. Fazio provided a
plentiful buffer between many of the lots
and the course.
One problem that this presents is that
shots that miss the fairways or rough by
more than a slight margin often disappear.
That is not to say that every hole is narrow,
but if you can aim well and hit the ball where
you plan, you will have a much better round
than someone who sprays the ball a bit.
The course plays to a par of 72 with the
longest tees playing at just under 6,900
yards. There are three more sets of tees
available, and the shortest will allow you to
play the course at under 5,000 yards.
The driving range/practice area is one
of the largest in the area. Lessons are available from the club’s head professional, David Ladd. With lessons for singles, groups,
multiple-day and even playing, there
should be no excuse for not getting the instruction that your game needs here. David is known for developing a customized
practice routine that optimizes your game
and helps to quickly lower your scores.
Once you are ready to go, the course welcomes you with a fairly tame par-4. From
there, you need to watch the wind and kickstart your mental game. There are wetlands
to carry and that defines the holes. Many
times the best angle to the flag comes from
hitting your tee shot close to the wetlands.
Rewards here come to those who play with
some risk and hit their targets.
One of my favorite holes is the par-3
sixth. This hole measures just 146 yards
from the back tees and under 90 yards
from the front set. It may sound easy, but
the swirling winds could mean as much as
a three-club difference from one round to
the next.
The winds are definitely something to
watch at The Champions Club. With so
many tall pines lining the fairways and surrounding the greens, it’s easy to misjudge
the wind speed and direction. Watch the
tops of the trees and be prepared to pay a
penalty if you mis-club.
The par-4 11th is another fun hole. Playing from the proper set of tees allows every
golfer the opportunity to drive the green or
get very close from the tee. Of course, there
is peril should you miss your target.
The closing three holes will get the attention of any golfer, regardless of his or her
ability. Sixteen is a long dogleg right par-4.
The 17th is a long par-3 with bunkers left
and water right. The final hole is the longest
on the course. Reaching this par-5 in regulation requires three solid shots.
After your round take a load off at the
Champions’ Pub. Here you can enjoy a
nice beverage and a wonderful meal or
even a snack.

Florida’s Fieger a winner
Gene Fieger, of Naples, Fla., shot up the
leaderboard on the strength of an 8-underpar 64 to capture the 59-and-Under Division of the 31st PGA Senior Stroke Play
Championship presented by Premier Golf
and Golf Advisor played at PGA Village in
Port St. Lucie on Jan. 13-15.
In the 60-and-over Division, Roy Vucinich, of Moon Township, Pa., led wire
to wire, closing with a 3-under-par 69
on the Wanamaker Course at PGA Golf
Club, to win his third Senior Stroke
Play Championship and fourth Winter
Championship overall.

Deerfield Beach’s Deer Creek GC sold to Martinez and partners
The Deer Creek Golf Club was sold
in November 2014, however local golfers
wouldn’t notice much of a change.
Marty Martinez, who has been at the
club since 1991, along
with two partners,
purchased the club
that opened in 1971.
“I have been running
the place for so long, I
believe the people like
what we do here,” Martinez said. “We are doing a lot of small capital
projects at the course.
Broward Notes
We are always looking
Gary Curreri
to try and improve.”
When Martinez started at Deer Creek,
he served as head pro and director of golf.
In late 1997, he became general manager of
both Deer Creek and the Carolina Club in
Margate. Carolina Club was sold in 2002.
Deer Creek has hosted qualifying for the
2003 USGA Senior Open Championship
and 2002 USGA Amateur Championship
as well as hosting the LPGA Tour’s Mazda
Classic from 1979-1984.
Throughout this time Deer Creek has
also hosted the Broward County Amateur
Golf Tournament on several occasions as
well as numerous PGA Pro-Ams and charity fundraisers.
Designed by world-renowned architect
Arthur Hills, the championship signature
course underwent a $2 million renovation
in the summer of 2004.
Clark, Kraus win Doherty titles
Gina Clark and Andrea Kraus found the
winner’s circle in the 83rd annual Ione D.
Jones/Doherty Women's Amateur Championship at the Coral Ridge Country Club
in Fort Lauderdale.
Clark, in the tournament for the first
time, defeated Beverly Hills’ Mika Liu 3
and 2 to win the Amateur Championship
final.
“I couldn't have gotten this far without
my putter,” said Clark, who is from Murrieta, Calif., but lives in Jacksonville. “I love
these greens. I think I made all my short
putts.”
Kraus, 54, of Baltimore, Maryland, won
her second consecutive Senior Champion“We try to have a great relationship with
everyone, members and guests,” Martinez
said. “It is a great opportunity for someone
that has been in the industry for so long to
own course. A lot of people dream of owning
a course and now I have that opportunity.”
Monette gets second ace
Elinor Monette has bragging rights
around the house as her second hole-in-one
in 11 months gave her a 2-1 advantage over
her husband, Rene.
Monette’s aces have occurred at Carolina
Country Club in Margate, the most recent
on Jan. 9 on the Par-3, 120-yard 17th.
“It was my second in two less than a year,”
ship title and third in four years as she defeated 2011 winner Mary Jane Hiestand, 2
and 1, on a windy, overcast morning. Kraus
won the first hole and never trailed.
"I didn't really play all that well this
week," Kraus said. "I got to the final and
played much better."
Other winners included Connie Isler
(Amateur First Flight); Mimi Hoffman
(Senior First Flight); Susie Fonde (Senior
Second Flight); and Pat Gelardi (Senior
Third Flight).
Only the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship and U.S. Amateur Championships, both in their 115th years, and the
U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship
(90th) have been around longer.
said Monette, whose rolled sevens on her
first hole-in-one when she used her 7-iron
to ace the Par-3, 117-yard 7th hole at Carolina on Feb. 7. “My second one landed on
the front fringe, left of the hole and kicked
right toward the hole. I didn’t see it, but I
heard a clink like it hit the hole and I turned
to my husband and asked him, ‘Did that go
in? And he said, ‘Yup!’
“It was super exciting, but I wish I had
seen it,” said Monette, who has played golf
for 14 years and said he is a “recreational
golfer, with a 13-handicap.” “I wish there
was replay.”
She said just enjoys playing.
“I don’t put a lot of work into it, I just en-
joy going out,” Monette said. “I will eventually when I have more time, but right now I
am happy to be doing well.”
The 47-year-old Boca Raton woman
didn’t see her first ace, either.
“It was over a sand trap,” Monette said.
“The people on the sixth green saw it go in.
They cheered to let us know.
“It is pretty unbelievable because it
took me over 40 years to get the first one,”
Monette added. “I haven’t been playing golf
for 40 years and now I have more than my
husband. He was with me for both, so I
have bragging rights and I am sure it is bittersweet for him. He is significantly a better
player, but his only hole-in-one came about
20 years ago, so he’s due.”
Monette said she likes the challenge the
sport presents.
“I also like playing the same course over
and over again,” Monette said. “That way,
you know what you are supposed to do each
time. I like playing with my husband. We
are both very competitive. It is a fun way to
spend a day together.”

Trump debuts beastly new Doral foursome
Miami-Dade Notes from page 8
Vancouver, British Columbia, he has already left an indelible mark at Barry and
will go down as the best golfer in school
history. In 2014, he was named the nation’s
Division II Player of the Year – and there
was absolutely no question about him deserving that honor.
One of his most unusual accomplishments was finishing a round at Normandy
Shores a year ago with six threes in a row
during the Barry Invitational. “Hard to beat
a guy who finishes with that many threes,”
Stobs said with a laugh.
This summer, Svensson, 21, played as
an amateur in a couple of pro events as he
tried to make up his mind whether to return to Barry or turn pro. He chose Barry,
making Stobs an extremely happy coach. In
late December, he finished second in the
world’s 14th-ranked amateur tournament,
the South Beach Invitational Amateur.
Stobs has no illusions about Svensson
coming back for his senior season. “There’s
not much chance he’ll be back next year,”
Stobs admitted. There will be no hard feelings when Svensson leaves Barry to play
professional golf. Stobs will give Svensson
a hug and wish him the best of luck. “Except for his parents, I’m his biggest fan,”
Stobs said.
Mike Anderson: A talented sophomore
from Parkland in Broward County who attended Iowa Western Community College,
Stobs said: “He’s an extremely hard worker.
He grinds on every shot. He hits it pretty
far – 300-plus. He’s strong.”
Nico Cavero: A junior, “Nico did not
play much his first two years,” according to
Stobs. “He has been patient and waited his
turn and is making the most of it.”
Mario Beltran: “Mario did not have the
best of fall,” Stobs said of the sophomore
from Valencia, Spain, “but he made strides
at the end.” A year ago, Beltran won two
tournaments for the Bucs.
Berry Joel: Of the 6-5 senior from the
Netherlands, Stobs said, “He was more inconsistent in the fall and he needs to work
on that. But he’s extremely capable.”
What would winning three national
titles in a row with this bunch of players
mean to Stobs?
“It would be an unbelievable accomplishment,” he simply said.
No way to argue with that assessment.
The Doral Foursome
Trump National Doral. The world’s best
pros poured in to play in the World Golf
Championships-Cadillac Championship.
After the Blue Monster makeover was
completed, there was much-less-ballyhooed renovations of the other three courses at the resort, and now all four courses are
up and operational since late January.
They are all in great shape and their
names have also changed. They used to
be the Red, Silver and Gold courses. Now
they are the Red Tiger, Golden Palm and
Silver Fox.
WIN A FREE ROUND FOR FOUR

Even owner Donald Trump would not
mess with that iconic Blue Monster name.
Moving On Up
The South Beach International Amateur,
which expects to be ranked as the 14th-best
amateur tournament in the world, showed
how much prestige it has.
Gabriel Lench, who won the tournament, vaulted from No. 396 to No. 58 in
the world. Barry’s Svensson, who finished
second behind Lench, is ranked 23rd in
the world, and Jorge Garcia – a Plantation
American Heritage senior headed to the
University of Florida – is ranked 42nd.

his peers during a junior golf clinic at the
Wycliffe GCC in Lake Worth.
The 11-year-old demonstrated his skills
and took on all challengers in a putting competition. He gave a short talk about what
makes golf fun and why he loves the sport.
“I love golf because it is challenging and
it is really fun,” said Staub, who is home
schooled. “There are so many different ways
to play great golf. You can hit the ball far
and you can have a great short game. You
can have the best iron game, or you can play
wedges really well.”
Staub has six holes-in-one and has won
more than 60 junior tournaments, including
the recent won the Doral Junior Golf Tournament in December by seven shots in the Boys
10-11 Division.
“Doing the clinic was the most fun I ever
had in my whole life,” Staub said. “I had kids
who were ages 4 to 17 and they were all listening to me about hard work and about how
to play golf. I could even tell them about how
to putt, even different styles because when I
putt, I look at the hole. That was the first time
I ever did a clinic. It was a lot better that what
I expected.”
More than 80 took part in two clinics –
one from 10:30 to noon for children 6-9, and
a second from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for children 10
and older.
The day also included a junior club fitting
and demo presented by US Kids Golf. The
event was presented for children and grandchildren of Wycliffe members and impressed
Wycliffe Director of Golf Lynn Stebbins.
“He generates enthusiasm for the game,”
Stebbins said. “This was a great way Wycliffe
could encourage younger people to play golf.”
Stonebridge wins Boca Cup
Doug Bohner parred the first playoff hole
to give the host Stonebridge Golf and Country Club its second consecutive victory in the
sixth annual Boca Cup.
The one-day tournament features 10 prestigious country clubs. Stonebridge GCC and
Addison Reserve were tied at 192, which
forced a sudden-death playoff. Also competing were Boca Grove CC, Boca West CC,
Broken Sound CC, The Polo Club of Boca
Raton, Royal Palm Yacht and CC, St. Andrews CC and Woodfield CC.
Led by honorary captain Herb Kanter, the
Stonebridge Boca Cup championship team
members were PGA Golf professional Jeff

der Course. Yet, the highlight of his round
was a 108-yard, hole-out eagle from the 14th
fairway. His sand wedge propelled him to a
three-stroke victory over Gary Trivisonno,
of Aurora, Ohio; Sonny Skinner, of Slyvester,
Ga.; and Brian Cairns of Walled Lake, Mich.
“That happens once a year, maybe,” Fieger said of his miraculous shot. The PGA
Club Manager at Hideout Golf Club, Fieger
has played in four PGA Championships and
one Senior PGA Championship. “There are
titles that you look back on. I think about
how I won the PGA Match Play Championship 20 years ago. Maybe 20 years from
now, I’ll think about this win like that, too.”
Vucinich shot 16-under par for the
Championship to beat playing partner
Mike San Fillipo of Hobe Sound, Fla., by
one stroke.
“Great players come down here to
Florida to play each year and when you
win, you win against a pretty good field,”
said Vucinich, 67, a former Champions
Tour player who has competed in the PGA
Championship, U.S. Open, Senior PGA
Championship, U.S. Senior Open and the
Senior British Open.
In a streak for the ages, 85-year-old Bill
Erfurth, of Northbrook, Ill., continued to
amaze by shooting 13 strokes below his age.
His even-par 72 in the final round was Erfurth’s fifth straight round in the 70s during
the PGA Winter Championships.
Erfurth, who won the PGA Half Century Championship the week prior, was cumulatively 58 strokes below his age over his
last 90 competitive holes, and was 36 shots
better than his age over his three rounds in
this event.
“I am in good health,” said Erfurth, a
member of the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.
“It’s no problem shooting my age every
time I play. But this is the first time in
tournament competition that I have shot
five rounds in a row below my age.”
There is, apparently, hope for us all.
PGA Merchandise Show
As you read this, I have likely just returned from a week at the annual PGA
Merchandise Show in Orlando.
Yes, as you were relaxing in the comfort
of your own home, or the 19th hole after a
pleasant round, I was working.
I marched up and down aisles of golf
equipment, accessories, balls, apparel and
much, much more. I tirelessly hit and tested all kinds of clubs and teaching aides in
a tiring effort to find the best of these items
and then report my findings to you.
Held in and near the Orange County
Convention Center each January, the PGA
Merchandise Show takes up every square
inch of the Center’s one million square-feet
of floor space. More than 10 miles of carpet
are laid out to form the aisles between over
1,000 exhibitors.
While at the show, I picked up several
items, including caps, balls, strange looking
new tees that make the ball fly straighter and
farther, aids that help you make those pesky
three-foot putts and more.Since I am a giving man, I want to share in the wealth. After
I test these products and since I can only
wear one hat at a time, I want to give away
some of the treasures I return home with.
If you’d like the chance to win one of
these items, send me an email at [email protected]. I will pull some names
from the hat and send those lucky people
some prizes from the show.
James Stammer has covered golf for nearly
20 years. If you have an item for the Treasure
Coast notebook, please write him at [email protected].

its little niche. Most places have a used club
section and we are quite a bit cheaper.”
Although Blake’s Golf Shop is 600 square
feet, Robbins said there is a good selection, and they have a warehouse with more
equipment.
“We have major name brands,” said Robbins, whose father, Matthew Robbins, is a
teaching pro at Deer Creek Golf Club. “We
have ladies clubs, juniors clubs … It is mostly an equipment shop. We don’t have clothing, except for maybe hats and some shoes.
For the most part, it is used clubs mostly
and we will get some new stuff in occasionally. We have bags, too.”
Robbins said when they first opened,
they received clubs from different places
and then people began coming in and try
to sell or trade clubs. They also have an arrangement with the First Tee of Broward.
“Most of the adult clubs that the kids
aren’t going to use we sell,” Robbins said. “A
majority of the proceeds goes to them (First
Tee) for new clubs for kids. We have a little
system. Anything with an orange dot is a
First Tee-donated club. That is almost half
the store, First Tee donated clubs. We got a

If someone comes in, Robbins or a staff

pretty consistent as far as that goes.”

PUTTER AROUND “TECHNOLOGY SAVES MONEY”
Is your golf equipment
right for you? Shaft flex,
type of shaft, style of
head, grip size, or even
the proper golf ball can
help us play this game.
Richard Conragan
Putter Around has been
in business longer than any other golf repair
or custom fit center in South Florida (over
30 years). The custom fit concept has really
changed dramatically over the past ten years
with launch monitors and equipment. Launch
monitors can both be educational and fun if
done properly. Putter Around has done over
10,000 fittings in the launch monitor era, from
the beginner, hall of famer, to the touring pro.
Ultimately the fitting process will save you
money by giving you a short cut to the proper
equipment.
Part of the fun is to try new equipment but
without the proper fit you are wasting your
time and money. Our research bears out the
fact that just hitting a club well does not
mean that it is necessarily right for you. People
do make compensations in their swing to hit
the ball correctly. Our idea is to fit the proper
clubs to the individual so they do not have to
make adjustments, this way they will make a
more natural swing. This concept is what we
do best! Then numbers on these Monitors
are all well and good but it is a tool, it is not
the final say! We represent two of the best
FLIGHTSCOPE for the full swing and SCIENCE
AND MOTION PUTT LAB (S.A.M.) for putting.
Putter Around is an accredited training center
and sales representative for both companies.
The best part is that you do not have to spend
a lot of money to obtain the proper clubs we
can fit to all price ranges.

An Exchange for golf fanatics
I’m Up from page 3
A typical show has 45 minutes per hour
of time they have to fill with interview segments running between 10 and 12 minutes
in length. Evans introduces the guests, explaining to the audience who and why they
might be on the show, and after the obligatory “nice to be here today” you hear so often, Dolch gets down to business with questions for the guests on their topic or subject.
The morning we sat in to watch, things
got off to a rather inauspicious start as Chris
Kokell, the technician on the board on the
other side of the glass, could not hear Russ
or Craig, and when the show came on the
air, well, nothing was coming out of the
studio except questions: “Can you hear
me?” “Why isn’t this working?”
After a couple of seconds, during which
I felt panic set in, the hosts appeared to remain calm. Kokell found the problem and
plugged something back into the wall and
voilá, all was right with the world again.
“Ah, the joys of live radio,” Dolch said
smiling.
“We got a mulligan,” Evans said.
The duo takes to the road a couple of
times a month – Quail Ridge was the most
recent in Boynton Beach – and it is often on
these remote visits they are able to get some
of the more popular names in the game on
the show. Dan Hicks of NBC sports has
been a guest as have all members of the old
Big 3 of golf – Jack, Arnold and Gary.
“Of course, the big names are always
great to get on our show: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player,” Evans said. And
being timely helps as well.
“Nick Price was a good interview. We
had him on the week before the 2013 Presidents Cup, which was a great spot.”
“My regular faves are Olin Browne (great
perspective) and Mark Calcavecchia (funny, irrelevant),” Dolch said. “David Graham
was fabulous last year. He told us he had to
go because he was about to play golf with
President Bush. First time that’s happened.”
Some of the segments are recorded during the week, something Kokell says is part
of the reason he likes working the show.
“They come prepared and it makes my
work easier,” he said.
Except when something gets unplugged.
Indeed, when Evans arrived to the studio
about 30 minutes prior to airtime, he pulled
out a stack of papers, some of which were
promotions he had to read on air, while
others were notes he wanted to cover with
Dolch. Evans had a hand-written schedule
that Kokell and Dolch both received outlining the order of events for the day. Craig,
on the other hand, arrived 15 minutes prior to the start of the show, opened up his
computer and appeared to be so relaxed he
might have been playing FreeCell.
When Daniel and Mallon were on the
phone, Dolch spoke with them like they
were family, comfortable in his conversation, which I’m sure he was and is with
those people he has written about for years
– first with The Post and now with Scripps
Craig Dolch joined the Golf Exchange as a cohost in 2012 and has nearly three decades
of experience covering golf.

Howard papers on the Treasure Coast. He
has other writing agreements with companies on line as well.
Unfortunately, it is Craig’s work outside
of the golf industry that Golfweek named
him “Father of the Year” in 2014 for his
work with son Eric, who in 2005 was stricken by encephalitis. Since Father’s Day that
year, the Dolch family has tried to work
through this tragic turn of events and a debilitating disease, which has put their son in
a wheelchair and unable to communicate.
Craig started the Eric Dolch Foundation
and has witnessed an outpouring of love and
support from many of those in the golf world,
including the Nicklaus family. An entire television series can be produced based on this
situation – so unfair as it is to his family.
It wasn’t 10 minutes after the show
signed off that Craig was packed up and
on his way to Eric’s home in Loxahatchee,
where he is able to get 24-hour-a-day care.
“Every Sunday,” Evans said.
But a couple of hours earlier, when
Kokell said to have a good show, Dolch
and Evans had nothing else on their minds
except to put on a very entertaining show,
which they did and continue to do each
Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
Because, as the program’s title states, it is
always a good exchange.

Walters’ show attracts 100
The First Tee of Broward, in partnership
with Life Sports Fitness, recently co-hosted
The Dennis Walters Golf Show at Holiday
Park in Fort Lauderdale and was attended
by more than 100 young people as well as
more than 20 adults.
The Dennis Walters Golf Show is a onehour combination of "Golf Lessons and Life
Lessons.” It is great golf and great fun, along
with an inspiring message that he works in
with various trick shots.
“Dennis is a great ambassador for The
First Tee,” said Jack Bloomfield, Director of Operations for the First Tee of Broward. “The show is also about reaching for
dreams. To him, a real dream is having a
positive thought in your head and in your
heart and doing whatever it takes to make
that come true.”

Goldsteins in First Tee clinic
What better way to kick ring in the New
Year than to work with eight girls battling
cancer at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital? Teaching professional Barry Gold-
stein and his daughter, Carly Ray, a sophomore at LSU, helped First Tee of Broward
put on a clinic at Plantation Preserve Golf
Course & Club on Jan. 10. The duo knows
a thing about working with youngsters as
Carly Ray was a First Tee Broward participant and mentor from ages 11 to 15.
“Carly Ray and I dedicated every Saturday to teach and mentor those kids,” said
Barry, who supported his daughter’s efforts
as well as the other First Tee of Broward instructors in the 90-minute clinic.
“Well, First Tee of Broward just restarted and they asked us to come to Plantation Preserve. Carly hit balls and explained
to eight girls battling cancer all about her
life experiences she's had through golf and
First Tee,” added Barry, who said First Tee
of Broward staged the clinic and they were
there to help support it.
“She talked about playing Pebble Beach
on national TV in 2009 through First Tee
and mentoring all the kids. She just showed
the kids what a great thing golf can be and
how it is similar to life and how to overcome obstacles.”
First Tee of Broward Director of Operations Jack Bloomfield said the clinic
culminated a nine-week program put on
by Desmond Dogan of Lifesports Fitness
Programs based in Fort Lauderdale. Dogan
and his First Tee coaches were also on hand.
Correction
The Dixie Amateur men’s event was organized so competitors’ first three rounds
were split, with two at Heron Bay and one
at Eagle Trace. After a cut, the final round
was at Eagle Trace.
