Winter 2015
January National Book Month! By Alexis Bergman
January is known for New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and the like. What many
people don't know is that it is also National Book Month! Therefore, this can be your encouragement to finish, finally, that book you haven't finished yet, read more books than you
usually do in a month. Everyone should find some time this month for some good reading.
Whether you prefer scaring yourself on a stormy night with an R.L. Stine, Madeline Roux,
Christopher Pike, or Ransom Riggs, or crying yourself to tears reading "The Fault in Our
Stars," "The Truth About Forever," "Matched," or "Eleanor & Park" you are welcome to do
so all month. Even if you just love dystopian series like "Divergent," "Hunger Games," "Maze
Runner," and "Legend," or are drawn to the wonderful tales from the past like "Little
Women," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Great Gatsby," or "Jane Eyre," you can enjoy these
stories all month. If you are a guy who enjoys "I Am Number Four" by Pittacus Lore, or
"Malice" by Christopher Wooding, or if you are a girl who enjoys "The Mortal Instruments"
by Cassandra Clare, or the "Gallagher Girls" by Ally Carter, dig them out of your closet and
read them again. If you are a western fan and want to try "Ghost Medicine" by Andrew
Smith or "The Devil's Paintbox" by Victoria McKernan, or if you are a big fan of mysteries
and want to try a Libba Bray or Carolyn Keene book, than go ahead and see if the library has a copy. If you haven't noticed, I just provided
you with 39 books, outright and through series, and 12 different names of authors. I hope you can try these and find some books you like.
The truth is that there are so many different kinds of books, and so many authors who have different styles of writing, that if you normally
aren't a big reader try another one! Do you love Horror movies? Then try a horror novel. Have you loved superhero cartoons since you were
little? Come to the library and check out some graphic novels. There are books for everyone out there. If you don't think you can stomach a
whole book, then try out some fanfiction. Have some friends over and act out some scenes from a favorite book or have a book exchange on
a lazy Sunday. Books have brought people together for years. They are a part of different histories and culture. Stories are able to make you
feel happy, sad, angry, and excited all between a few short pages. They can take you to 8432, to meet handsome princes, to see what is
really down a rabbit hole, to the brink of human despair, and to 8954. Do yourself a favor. Read a book today.
The Gamers Clip
by Adam Power
First off, Happy Christmas and Merry New Year! I hope you all have (or had)
an amazing time drinking vodka... I mean chocolate milk. Auto correct. :P Anyway, this month I'll be reviewing Red Faction Guerilla. I'm pretty sure No one
reading this has ever heard of that game and I don't understand why because it's
basically like Skyrim with a destructible environment on Mars. A massive and
completely free roam map where you can destroy absolutely everything; except the
terrain itself. But other than that you can do pretty much anything you want. The
story line is the EDF (Earth Defense Force) is basically the Nazis of Mars and
you're part of a rebel group to liberate the planet of them. You complete missions and kill people and destroy stuff to unlock the next part of the map. The
money in the game is called salvage and you can get it by just basically destroying buildings. You can buy rocket launchers, disintegration guns, a thing that
shoots lighting, jet packs and way more stuff. All of them can be equipped with
different upgrades to accommodate any mission. Demolition specialist, stealthy guy,
anti-personnel person are part of the game or any combination of whatever weapons and gadgets you want to suit your playing style. This game is a couple years old so I don't imagine it will be too much. We
got it for free with Xbox live. Suckas! But I do highly recommend this game to both casual and hardcore gamers as it is both
hilariously fun and the missions are challenging. Multi-player is also available. Have fun my readers this end of the year. Toodles!
Winter TAB Minutes
by Angela Halter
November 12, 2014
The meeting was called to order at 3:57 p.m. Our first order of business was to discuss details about the upcoming Christmas party. We also discussed October's Halloween party, which was a great success. Everyone who came had a frighteningly
good time. Thanks to everyone who came and/or decorated for this spectacular event! Next year's theme for the Halloween
party will be very unique, as we will be doing The Phantom of the Opera. Originally a novel written by the French author
Gaston Leroux, this gothic love story has undergone many adaptations, including a 1925 silent film starring Lon Chaney and
the popular Andrew Lloyd Weber musical. The story revolves around a deformed composer who falls in love with a beautiful
young soprano. The party will include games and dances inspired by The Phantom of the Opera, and scenes will be performed from the musical. After we finished discussing next year's Halloween party, the meeting ended at 4:33 p.m.
December 10, 2014
The meeting was called to order at 3:35 p.m. We started the meeting earlier than usual due to the Christmas party. After
meeting some of TAB's successful alumni, we began to discuss future events. Our next meeting will be held on January 14,
2015. January is also Bring a Friend to TAB month, and members are encouraged to invite their friends to the next meeting. Upcoming events include a swing dance event on January 10th and a Valentine's Day murder mystery on February 14th.
Our next order of business was to vote for our Book Club book. This month's winner was I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga. The
meeting ended at 4:00 p.m. and the Christmas began party shortly after. After a delicious meal consisting of pizza, cookies,
and hot chocolate, the games began. These games included dressing a person up as a snowman, as well as a game of
Christmas-themed truth or dare. The party ended with a Secret Santa gift exchange. The party was a lot of fun, and thanks
to everyone who attended and/or helped with the event.
Merry Christmas!
Labyrinth
Movie Review by Alexis Bergman
I thought long and hard about what movie to do
for this issue of the newsletter. I debated doing a
romantic movie for Valentine's Day. However, I decided
to do a review of a favorite movie of mine. If you
haven't seen it, you need to, ASAP! "Labyrinth" came
out June 27, 1986. It is noticeably a Jim Henson film,
and his best at that (In my opinion!). The movie
follows Sarah Williams, a teenage girl with a love for
fairy tales and all things fantasy. After being stuck
home on a weekend night babysitting her baby
brother, she tells him some of her favorite story,
"Labyrinth." After getting frustrated with him, she does
as the girl in her book and wishes that the Goblin
King would take her brother away. Unfortunately, Toby
really is taken away. She begs for him back, but the
Goblin King, Jareth, tells her to get Toby back she has
to find her way through his labyrinth to his castle at
the center. Did I mention that she only has 13 hours
to do it? Sarah confronts many challenges in the
labyrinth and is helped and hurt by many different
Page 2
creatures including: a big, lovable, beast named
Ludo, a dwarf with mixed feelings, Firey's, that
enjoy taking each other's heads off, and many
goblins. The movie is great for teenagers because it shows Sarah truly turning from a
childish girl to a mature teenager. It features a
wonderful cast including David Bowie, Jennifer
Connelly, Toby Froud, Brian Henson, and Frank
Oz. The music is written and preformed by
David Bowie and is absolutely magical. The
performances are funny and you will fall in love
with heroes and villains alike. It is noticeably a
Jim Henson movie, and if you are a fan of the
Muppets, then you will definitely enjoy this
great movie. You will become completely enchanted with this movie, as I have. Any fan of
fantasy and magic movies, books, and TV shows,
need to try this movie. So watch, have fun, and
don't be embarrassed to, "Dance, Magic,
Dance!"
Bring-a-Friend to TAB Month!
The January TAB meeting is traditional the meeting where we ask members to bring someone
new to TAB. As we enter the new year, the library would like to see some new faces on our teen
board. This is a big recruitment month for us and we look forward to sharing our mission and
volunteer opportunities with local area teens. We count on our present TAB members to help us in
this recruitment effort. The Teen Advisory Board of the library helps the library plan teen programming, assist with teen book selection, volunteers at library-sponsored events and publishes a
monthly newsletter. Teens get to participate in such events as the Dogwood Parade, Summer Reading Kick-off, and more. We also hold a Teen Summer Reading Movie Marathon and plan programs
specifically for teens. If you are a writer, contributing to the monthly newsletter might be your
thing. We also have a Teen Zone where teens can hang out, do their homework or play games in
a teen friendly environment. So, all in all, the library has many opportunities for teen to hang out
and have fun. Please consider joining the Teen Advisory Board and make a difference in your
community. The Teen Advisory Board meets once a month on the second Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. Drop by
a meeting any time—all teens are welcome!
Till Death do us Part—A Teen Valentine
Murder Mystery
It's back by popular demand...It’s Valentine’s Day and it’s time for the Harry
& Hanna Heart Valentine Day Soiree! Harry and Hanna are back in Amorville at the Mio
Amore Café to celebrate this annual event. All their friends are gathering to share a
delectable lunch and catch up on all the gossip but someone is not going to make it
out of lunch alive. Is it love gone wrong, revenge, jealousy or what? Teens! Join us for
a murder mystery party at the library just for teens and be sure to come ready for
fun. The program will be held in the Large Meeting Room on Saturday, February 14th,
2015, at 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided as the murder unfolds. This is an interactive
program so we ask that you sign up in advance. This program is free and open to the
public but reservations are requested in order to ensure parts for all players. Spacing is
limited so be sure to get your reservations in soon. We encourage all players to come
in costume so parts will be distributed at the Wii Wednesdays after school program.
