Farmers harvest social media for customers, ideas
By Morgan Davis
Technology is a little slower to take root
on Southern farms. It wasn’t until the 1950s
that mechanized harvesting revolutionized
the picking of cotton below the MasonDixon Line. Over the ensuing decades, advances in technology have changed the face
of farming in ways too numerous to count,
but farmers are still cautious to adopt the latest craze - like social media and this whole
World Wide Web thing.
There’s no better time to embrace the
change, however, as farming is becoming
cool again, so to speak. More consumers
these days choose to “eat local” and take a
more active role in knowing the sources of
their food. Hence the growing popularity of
pick-your-own farms like those highlighted
inside this issue of the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin; they’re in vogue among
consumers who want the freshest produce
available, and also among parents who want

their children to know that food doesn’t
grow in grocery stores.
Unlike grocery stores, however, farms are
dynamic places. Crops don’t always follow a
schedule, and farmers are finding there’s no
more immediate and direct way than social
media to alert potential customers to changes in the field. That’s why you’ll find more
farms and farmers popping up online, testing out the latest technology in their hunt for
newer, better and easier ways to grow crops,
and to find customers for their commodities.
“I highly recommend stepping into this
century of social media,” said Paulette Taylor, farm manager at Sunshine’s Berry Farm
in Ft. Valley, Ga.
Social media has opened up communication between the farmer and consumer. In
so many fields outside of agriculture, it has
evolved from sharing personal photos and updates
to business networking.
Taylor uses Facebook to
not only keep consumers
informed about her own
crops, but to also promote
Georgia agriculture in general.
“As crops on the farm
grow, I post pictures of the
progress on Facebook, but I
also like to keep it personal
so consumers can relate,”
Taylor said.
Social media and farm
web sites are also great
ways for farmers to demonstrate their commitment
to safe and sustainable
production by showing
and telling consumers directly about their on-farm
practices.
“Transparent communication is always good for
a farm to be able to show
its integrity,” said Jessica
Holt, assistant professor
of Agricultural Communication in the University
of Georgia’s College of
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Not only can a farmer connect directly
with the consumer but he or she can also use
social media to connect with fellow farmers, extension agents and crop consultants to
share ideas and get questions answered in a
prompt manner.
“To be considered active on social media,
farmers don’t have to post pictures or share
personal information,” said Holt.
Farmers who’ve begun to take advantage
of social media are finding that it is generating activity out on their farms.

Farm” activities online. Social Media and

GEORGIA GROWN PROFILE: Wicker & Whisk sells the taste of the South
Born and raised in Georgia, Lara Lyn Carter is no stranger to Southern hospitality. Her
strong Southern roots and affinity for cooking
inspired her to pursue a career that would allow her to share her
passion for Southern
entertaining
with
others.
With extensive
experience
and
a wealth of classic Southern recipes under her belt,
Lara Lyn created
and hosted Savor the
Good Life, a television program dedicated to showcasing the history of Southern
entertaining and cuisine. The show, which
aired from 2012 to 2015 on WALB-TV, the
NBC/ABC affiliate for southwest Georgia,
was a glowing success and was honored with
an award from the National Association of
Broadcasters. In 2014, Lara Lyn published her first cookbook Southern Thymes Shared, a guide to entertaining complete with themed menus ranging from Easter dinner to football kick-off
parties. The book, co-written with wine expert Doc Lawrence, also features handpicked
wine pairings to complement each menu, en-
suring a flawless entertaining experience. She
is currently working on a new cookbook due
out in 2016.
Lara Lyn Carter’s new show, Thyme for
Sharing with Lara Lyn Carter,
premiering as part of Georgia
Public Broadcasting’s summer
lineup, will follow Lara Lyn as
she travels around the south,
drawing inspiration from iconic
dishes in each location. Every
episode
will
end with Lara
Lyn providing
the viewer with
her own twist
on the classic
Southern dish, as well as the
perfect wine pairing, ensuring a flawless dining experience. The season will consist
of four pilot episodes and
will include quintessential
Southern destinations such
as Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville,
Va.; Jekyll Island, Ga.; Nashville, Tenn.; and
Gray Moss Plantation in Leslie, Ga.
This month, Lara Lyn is also launching
her very own product line, Wicker & Whisk.
The collection currently consists of three
sauces that put a bold new spin on American
family favorites, taking classic tried-and-true
flavors and elevating them to the next level.
The Merlot Steak Sauce, Port Wine Mustard
and Homegrown Herb Dressing will soon
be available in select grocery and specialty
stores across the Southeast.
An advocate of “keeping things local,”
Lara Lyn Carter recently decided to partner
with Georgia Grown, a marketing initiative
of the Georgia Department of Agriculture
that she was first introduced to three years
ago on her debut television series. Lara Lyn
credits her decision to
partner with Georgia
Grown to its commitment to promoting local businesses and their
products.
“I knew that I wanted to be partnered with
something that has
such a positive effect
on this state,” said Lara
Lyn. “I am proud to be going out beyond
Georgia with what I am doing and taking
some Georgia Grown with me.”

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your
Visit to a Pick-Your-Own Farm
Pick-Your-Own farms are a great way to get
the freshest produce available. The anticipation
of such a trip conjures bucolic fantasies of a
happy, healthy family outing, but the reality
can be quite different if you’re not properly
prepared.
Donald Snare, owner of the Snare Farm in
Gillsville (northeast Georgia), offers these tips
for visiting a pick-your-own farm:
Bolingbroke Blueberry Farm

1) Stay cool. Wear a hat, use sunblock,
and stay hydrated. Mornings are the
coolest time to pick. 2) Wear practical clothes, especially
shoes. Sneakers are ideal. After all,
you’re visiting a farm! 3) Bring insect repellent. Ask the
farmer if there are any fire ant
mounds to watch out for.
4) Supervise children, and explain
what is ripe for picking. It’s a
wonderful experience for kids (and a
good photo op!), and it teaches them
where food comes from. 5) Bring shallow, open take-home
containers. They allow produce to
cool down without condensation, and
protect soft fruit such as blackberries. Crop

Beth Wood, owner of Holloway Farms in

Free Classes Teach Finance to Young Farmers
AgGeorgia Farm Credit and AgSouth Farm Credit are offering free financial workshops
this summer for young, beginning, small and/or minority farmers. Topics of the AGAware
workshops include budgeting and risk management, preparing a business plan, and an introduction to the marketing assistance available through the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Farm Services and Small Business administrations.
“The Farm Credit System has a mission to serve agriculture and rural America, and it’s
been doing that for nearly a century,” said Van McCall, director of the AGAware program.
“In support of that mission, AgSouth Farm Credit and AgGeorgia Farm Credit provide
loans and supporting services to farmers in our territory. Our hope is that our counsel along
with the support of other key agricultural entities will help ensure that future farmers will be
prepared and financially strong so they may continue doing what they love and providing
something so vital to our survival.” Applications for scholarships for continuing education through Farm Credit University
will be available to graduates of AGAware. AGAware is certified for FSA Direct Borrower
training credit. Seminars are scheduled at the following locations:
• Friday, July 17, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the UGA Tifton Conference Center, 15 RDC Rd.,
Tifton
• Friday, August 28, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., University of West Georgia, The Coliseum, 1601

Important Crop Insurance Deadline Nears in Georgia
Cabbage Growers Need to Make Decisions Soon
VALDOSTA, Ga -- The USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) reminds Georgia
growers that the final date to purchase crop insurance for cabbage is July 1, 2015. Growers
in Brooks, Colquitt, Tift, and Toombs counties need to buy, review, or modify their policies
before the sales closing date has passed. Crop insurance provides protection against crop
production losses due to natural perils such as drought, hail, and excessive moisture.
Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents.
Growers are strongly urged to contact an agent as soon as possible for premium quotes
and more details. A list of agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at the
RMA Agent LocatorCost Estimator www.rma.usda.gov. Growers can use the RMA to get a
premium amount estimate of their insurance needs online. Learn more about crop insurance
and the modern farm safety net at www.rma.usda.gov.
Alabama Syrup-Maker’s Association invites Georgians to visit and learn
The Alabama Syrup-Maker’s Association will sponsor a syrup-making
workshop at 8 a.m. Sept. 26 at Landmark Park in Dothan, Ala. Anyone
interested in making old-fashioned
cane syrup is encouraged to attend.
Each segment of the process will
be covered through hands-on experience, from stripping the cane, cutting
the cane, squeezing the cane and
filtering the cane juice to cooking the
cane juice and bottling the syrup. Free
lunch will be provided.
Everyone who attends will receive a bottle of cane syrup for their labors. The fee to
attend is $25 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under. To register please call club president Earl Stokes at 334.494.3037; vice president Thomas Moore at 334.806.6769; or Glenn
Dickerson at 334.790.9235.
May Weather Gave Farmers a Break
Warm and dry conditions during most of May allowed many Georgia farmers time to get
in the fields and finish planting, which had been delayed by a wetter-than-normal April. The
lack of rain left some areas with severe drought conditions, even at the end of the month
when rains soaked most of the state.
Hay harvesting was ahead of schedule due to the excellent drying conditions, but dry
conditions also caused problems with germination in some dry land peanuts and other crops
and stressed some dry land corn crops. The dry conditions caused the U.S. Drought Monitor to identify a developing region of severe drought in southern Georgia by the end of the
month.
Many stations reported their driest start to the month on record, with little to no rain
until the last week of the month. The dry start was due to a stalled weather system in the
central and southern Plains, which caused disastrous flooding in that region but left the
state dry. This system started to move to the east at the end of the month and brought most
of the month’s rain on May 26-28, although scattered showers were observed mid-month,
especially around Atlanta.
The National Weather Service recorded the highest monthly precipitation total in the
state in Atlanta - 4.44 inches, 0.77 of an inch above normal. The lowest monthly precipitation total was in Augusta - 0.93 of an inch, 1.72 inches below normal.
Temperatures across the state were above normal in May. One daily temperature record
was broken -- Brunswick set a record with a daytime high of 93 degrees on May 19,
surpassing the old record of 92 degrees, set in 1965. Severe weather was observed on eight
days during the month.

Home Cooking:
Blueberry Buttermilk
Panna Cotta
Ingredients:
1 pint fresh or frozen blueberries
½ cup water
¾ cup sugar
1 teaspoon orange zest
1 Tablespoon fresh orange juice
1 envelope gelatin
1½ cups heavy cream
1½ cups buttermilk (preferably whole fat)
1/3 cup honey
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preparation:
For the blueberry sauce: Combine blueberries, water, sugar, zest and juice in a saucepan
over medium heat. Bring to a boil then simmer about 10 minutes until thickened. Cool to
room temperature.
Meanwhile, heat cream and honey in a saucepan until just boiling. Turn heat off, add
vanilla and buttermilk.
In a small bowl, add ¼ cup water and sprinkle with gelatin. Let set for about 5 minutes.
Once the gelatin has bloomed, add to still warm mixture and mix to dissolve.
Spoon blueberry sauce into the bottom of 6 dessert glasses. Carefully pour cream mixture
over blueberries. Let set at room temperature for 20 minutes then transfer to refrigerator
for 3-4 hours.

ARTY’S GARDEN:
A few thoughts on scarecrows
I have a fondness for traditional scarecrows, even though personal experience
indicates they are basically useless.
If scarecrows could sing and dance like Ray
Bolger in The Wizard of Oz, the crows “would
be scared to pieces” just as Dorothy predicted.
However, the effectiveness of stuffed stick
figures on this side of the rainbow is limited.
It turns out birds are not the birdbrains we
thought, and crows are among the most intelligent of all. Crows, research has proven, can
even recognize the faces of individual people.
Traditional scarecrows may scare a few
birds away for a brief period. Sometimes I
think they are only effective while you are
in the garden constructing or installing them.
Birds become suspicious of humanlike figures
that don’t move or really look or act human.
They overcome whatever fear they initially
had and proceed to pull up your sprouting
corn, eat your ripening strawberries or peck
your watermelons.
Some people report better results with nontraditional scarecrows and other devices such
as balloons with “owl eyes,” shiny pie pans,
compact discs and metallic ribbon. However,
birds can eventually become immune to these,
too. Plastic owls and rubber or inflatable
snakes may be effective for brief periods. They
should not be used every day and should be repositioned at least once a day to keep the birds
from wising up. My family had success with a
large, inflatable snake in the blueberries until a
mockingbird attacked and deflated it.
I placed a rubber copperhead around the
peanut patch when crows came calling last
year. It scared my mother, but I saw no evidence that it scared any bird.
I then got out the Sharpie and converted
two snake gourds (long, skinny gourds that
look like overgrown loaves of French bread)
into what I thought might pass for rattlesnakes.
I moved them once or twice a day to prevent
suspicion. Today, I can still hear crows laughing.
Ultimately, netting did the trick. It did not
scare anything but formed a barrier between
crow and peanut. Although, perhaps it did
scare the crows if they thought it was some
sort of snare.
Noisemakers of various sorts may work

for a while. However, I’d prefer losing some
of my harvest rather than losing the goodwill
of my neighbors or receiving a citation for
disturbing the peace.
Motion-activated sprinklers that surprise
interlopers with a stream of water are one
relatively new scare device that holds promise
in some circumstances.
Scarecrows of tomorrow may incorporate
advances in technology and knowledge of bird
behavior along with traditional scare tactics
in the ongoing battle to protect gardens and
crops. Are scarecrow drones on the horizon?
I hope not; I’d prefer holograms of a dancing

Did You Know …
Musicians Willie Nelson, Neil Young and
John Mellencamp organized the first Farm Aid
concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the
loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep
farm families on their land. Dave Matthews
joined the cause in 2001, and to date Farm Aid
has raised more than $48 million to promote
America’s family system of agriculture. But just
how does that money get where it needs to
go?
More than just a concert, Farm Aid is a
nonprofit organization fully committed to
the promotion and support of farming. When
farmers in crisis call 1-800-FARM-AID or visit
Farm Aid’s online Farmer Resource Network,
they are connected to an extensive network
of organizations across the country that help
farmers find access to new markets, transition
to more sustainable and profitable farming
practices, and survive natural disasters.

the organization and the ways it strives to help
American farmers, visit www.farmaid.org.

SOCIAL MEDIA
Continued From Page 1 Marketing Director Jessica Watson said that
strategy produces a far greater response than
any other form of marketing the organization
has used.
“We use social media to inform our customers instantly,” Watson said. “Mother
nature can sometimes be a little hard on us.
There are times we need to inform our customers if we’ve had too much rain and have
to close the fields for picking.”
Farmers are using social media sites such
as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest
and blogs as free marketing tools as well.
More than just advertising, however, social
media opens up a direct channel of communication between farmers and consumers, often leading to lasting relationships.
“I have been marketing various products
from ‘Run to the Farm’ for about one and a
half years,” said Kristy Wilkins, manager of
Run to the Farm, an enterprise that sprang
from her family’s farm. “It’s not always
flashing your products in their face necessarily; it’s to build a rapport and friendship with
those people who are drawn to the products
you are marketing.”
Wilkins and her family started farming
bees, which led to the making of her skincare
business. She produces honey shampoos,
facemasks and body scrubs.
While trying to sell her “Fresh from the
Farm” products she began sharing photos
constantly on social media. Customers immediately started inquiring about certain
products through Facebook.
Wilkins suggested taking classes to get
comfortable with social media and online
marketing. She recommends the web site arealchange.com and UGA’s Small Business
Group at Darton College in Albany, where
classes in Social Media and online marketing
take the fear out of exploring new technology.

Southern universities create smartphone app to predict disease risk in peanuts
By Clint Thompson
University of Georgia, College of Agricultural
and Environmental Sciences
A new smartphone app for the Peanut Disease Risk Index, or “PEANUT Rx,” will help Georgia peanut growers
predict their risk of disease for this year’s crop.
The PEANUT Rx program, created by researchers from
the University of Georgia, University of Florida, Auburn
University and Mississippi State University, allows producers to predict the advantages of using various crop management strategies. Growers can now access this information in the field, on the tractor or in their truck, thanks to
the new app.
“I’m not here to tell a grower what to do. Our role in
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is to give
farmers options, give them opportunities,” said Bob Kemerait, plant pathologist on the UGA Tifton Campus. “The
opportunity that this app provides is (for growers) to educate themselves on what their risk is, to manage that risk
and then to understand the prescription fungicide programs
that different companies offer, spraying fewer times or
more times, depending on (whether they’re at a) low risk
or high risk. Even if they don’t change their fungicide program, it’s an opportunity to learn how to reduce risk and
how to properly manage risk.”
The PEANUT Rx app can be accessed from smart-
phones with Apple or Android operating systems. Those
with an Android operating system can go to Google Play
and search “UGA PEANUT Rx.” Growers using iPhones
should go to the Apple App Store and search “PEANUT
Rx.” The app is free and only takes a few minutes to download. Risk factors are updated annually, providing growers
with the most updated information relating to research and
variety testing, Kemerait said.
“There are countless hours and years of research in this
PEANUT Rx project. The beauty of it is its simplicity. We
are able to package many of the things we understand about
disease risk in peanuts into a few simple steps,” Kemerait
said. “It’s now even more available through a smartphone
app. We’re hopeful growers will adopt it and be comfort-
Find Georgia Agriculture Online! www.agr.georgia.gov
able with it, in order to better manage their peanuts.”
PEANUT Rx deals with the three major diseases in peanuts: tomato spotted wilt virus, leaf spot and white mold.
Kemerait said the index examines production factors like
crop rotation, planting dates, plant varieties and the insecticide growers use at the beginning of the growing season.
The index provides producers with a risk assessment of
crops that could be affected by one of these three diseases.
“It helps our farmers tailor a program that’s most appropriate for their risks. We’re not waiting until we see disease; we’re looking at the preseason risk factors that are
associated with outbreaks of the disease and then changing
those factors – finding a different variety, adjusting planting date, plant population, tillage practices – that will affect
risks. Once you have a final risk value, then you decide
what fungicide program is most appropriate for your situation,” Kemerait said.
To learn more about PEANUT Rx, go to ugapeanuts.
com. If you have additional questions, contact your local
UGA Extension agent.
Georgia is the country’s top producer of peanuts, recording $507.4 million in farm gate value in 2013, according to
the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development.
