61537 City Parks Summer Program
GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR
It is with great pleasure, on behalf of Charlottetown City Council, that I extend
an invitation to all citizens and visitors to take advantage of the many activities
and events, as outlined in this 2008 - 09 Fall/Winter Brochure.
As the school doors reopen and most of us head back into hectic work schedules
and routines, I encourage you to make time for positive leisure activities,
whether it be as a volunteer or participant, and play an important part in
community life.
The Parks and Recreation Department has developed a variety of programs to
provide you with many choices for your leisure time and I encourage you to become and stay active.
The City of Charlottetown is dedicated to serving its citizens with programs and facilities that
contribute to the overall well being of individuals and families, promoting good health, teaching
new skills and providing much deserved enjoyment and entertainment.
Many of the sport organizations in our City are volunteer driven and would not otherwise be available
to our residents, so on behalf of the entire City Council, I would like to extend appreciation, to the
many volunteers involved in our community based sport and leisure services.
With so much to offer, Charlottetown continues to be a prosperous community with increased
opportunities for improved quality of life. Be sure to get out this season and take advantage of
program and activities that are of interest to you.
Have a healthy and safe season!

Mitchell Tweel
Dave MacDonald
Our Parks and Recreation Department continues to maintain a
pulse on the needs and interests of citizens as it pertains to
active living. Our programs and services reflect the changing
demand and trends in sports and recreation. The City also
continues to prepare for next years Canada Games with the
completion of Memorial Baseball Field and addition of two
tennis courts at Victoria Park. This fall will also see construction
of a third soccer pitch at the Parkman complex and the twining
of Central Field.
Our committee commends the staff of the Parks and Recreation
Department for their dedication and hard work, and we would
like to thank the many volunteers for their commitment to a
wide range of programs and services that would not be possible
without their support and leadership. Often times these services
go unrecognized by many of the users, so when you have the
chance express your gratitude to a volunteer or staff, who help
to make these programs and services happen.
Yours in Recreation,
Chair Mitchell Tweel, Vice-Chair Dave MacDonald, and Councillor

For 90 years, we've understood youth want to be involved, accepted, valued and heard.
That's why 4-H clubs are great places for youth to learn and grow. 4-H members belong
to a club, enroll in projects and learn from the guidance of screened volunteer leaders.
Learning through hands-on experiences is the key objective of the 4-H Program. Through
4-H, members learn to take responsibility, make decisions, and work as a team. Members
and leaders develop skills and interests, discover special talents and gain the selfconfidence that comes from achievement. It's about personal development, but it's also
about making friends and having fun.

The PEI Active movement is an initiative of the Prince Edward Active Living Alliance
aimed at increasing the physical activity levels of Islanders. One component of
this initiative is the PEI Active Communities.
In 2007, the City of Charlottetown signed up to become a PEI Active Community,
and through its’ Parks and Recreation Department the City is encouraging residents
to stay active or become more active. Within the PEI Active Community component,
the emphasis is on Active Homes, Active Transportation, and Active Leisure.
ACTIVE HOMES
Active Homes is a great way to ensure that everyone in your household is
staying active! The definition of an Active Home is 30 minutes of daily physical
activity for everyone in the household. It can be as easy as climbing the stairs
during commercials or playing energetic music while cleaning. Get the whole
family involved and go for a walk after supper in the evening.
ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION
The Active Transportation movement focuses on the promotion of active
transportation for health and environmental benefits. The Parks and Recreation
Department encourages residents to use the City’s Routes for Nature and Health
Trail system. Please pick up a trail map at City Hall. Our department will be
working to identify safe cycling routes throughout the City along with promoting
the needed infrastructure and services.
ACTIVE LEISURE
As part of Active Leisure, the Parks and Recreation Department would like
to encourage everyone to browse through the Fall & Winter Program Brochure and
see what sport and recreation activities are being offered within the community.
This brochure certainly has something for everyone.
FAMILY ACTIVE PHOTO CONTEST
Our department wants to hear from you, our residents. We encourage you
to submit a family photo on how you and your family are becoming more active.
Please include your name, street address and phone number. Photos are entered
into a draw to be held each month for chance to win Parks and Recreation
Department T-shirts.
