This fall the Salt Lake County
Health Department released a
community health report with
information about South Salt
Lake residents’ health factors,
including heart disease, diabetes,
obesity rates, and overall fitness
levels and nutritional habits.
This detailed report reveals Utah
Department of Health data sets
that compare South Salt Lake to
the U.S. as a whole, the state of
Utah, and Salt Lake County.
(NAMI). We are offering courses in Mental Health First Aid and
QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), a suicide prevention program.
These free classes are nationally recognized models and the skills
learned are useful in many settings. The Mental Health First Aid
certification class will start in February. I strongly encourage your
participation. All are invited. For more information, see the ad on
page 5.
We are pleased to see that
compared to the data released
two years ago, South Salt Lake
residents have made improvements to their overall health. You can
find information on our community mental health, physical health
and fitness and nutrition at sslneighbors.com by clicking on the
community data tab.
In the coming year, I hope you will strive to make a difference for
the better in the life of someone in our community. Let’s encourage
each other to seek help if needed, to listen to someone that is
experiencing emotional or physical distress, and to learn more
about what we can do to help someone who is struggling. As
mayor, I have seen firsthand what a difference one person can
make. In getting to know and looking out for each other, we can
build the community support that improves the health and wellbeing of every South Salt Lake resident.

chalkboard. For 5 years, the South Salt Lake
Character Initiative themes have been gaining
momentum to promote positive character in our
community. In 2016, Promise South Salt Lake is
proud to carry on the tradition begun by the South
Salt Lake Coalition for Drug Free Youth in 2010.
The program helps reinforce character traits and
attributes that people in South Salt Lake excel in,
and encourages individuals in the community to
expand their own positive character traits.
Each month, a new theme is introduced to
highlight a positive character trait. Families,
schools, afterschool programs, recreation
programs, businesses, and faith communities
can utilize the featured theme as a discussion
launching point: this is an opportunity to illustrate
the theme given with examples from our own

invited to use the themes in their newsletters and

At 85,000 square feet, the WinCo store will be a significant catalyst for the City of South Lake in accomplishing several long-term
objectives. Tthe master plan for the development was adopted by the City Council on Sept. 2 of this year. WinCo will be the retail anchor
of the first phase of downtown development which includes residential, retail and more commercial uses.

As the city’s third and largest supermarket, WinCo will fill a gap in South Salt Lake’s food desert, which according to the U.S. Department

of major changes that will help us educate everyone that they are not driving through ‘south’ Salt Lake City
or ‘north’ Murray,” Gary Birdsall, president and CEO of the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, said. “When businesses and
developers see the WinCo structure coming out of the ground, the word will spread about the growth and opportunity in our area. With

Committee
The WinCo development is the newest phase of a major expansion program for South Salt Lake. The city’s development will eventually
include 3 million square feet of new office space, the construction of 2,600 new residential units and 1.5 million square feet of retail
space.
A variety of retail, residential and commercial uses are also included in this project. A multifamily residential development will activate
the S-Line Streetcar corridor to the south, and the State Street frontage includes retail/commercial business according to Michael
Florence, Community and Economic Development Director for the city.
This includes construction of Liberty Crossing which will provide 157 housing units of various sizes: studio, one- and two-bedroom
apartments as well as lofts and townhouses. A second project is expected to add 120 residential units. These projects take advantage
of environmentally friendly transportation options and offer some green building advantages. The development
also encompasses access to Parley’s Trail, which is 8 miles long, which connects the Wasatch Mountains to the
Jordan River.
The Fitness and Nutrition
Committee strives to create
conditions and locate resources
to ensure South Salt Lake
residence enjoy a happy, healthy
life. The committee believes
that fitness and nutrition are
the foundation to success in
education, work, and happiness.

“The mixed use approach is important for the city’s urban development and grocers always are good to have
as an anchor,” Scott Verhaaren of The Boyer Company explained, “especially as the city’s plan extends beyond
building primarily a power retail center that might have lasted only 15 to 20 years. The city deserves credit for
articulating a viable, long-lasting vision.” Verhaaren said construction is expected to begin in March 2016, barring
any unexpected preconstruction issues. The store could be ready to open in November 2016.
Mayor Wood said the design of the WinCo store, as well as the landscaping, will match the overall appearance the
development. The store’s exterior includes a balanced mix of painted masonry and prefinished metal paneling in
warm and elegant white, brown, bronze, and dragon’s breath hues. “We want to develop the downtown district to
be eclectic but also compatible in its architecture,” she explained. "We are putting our mark on the whole valley ."

Mobile Eye Clinic Serves South Salt Lake Families
In November, 16 Roosevelt Elementary students received full vision exams and a new pair of glasses, as needed, courtesy of the Mobile
Health and Mobile Vision Clinics. After the students picked out frames, the glasses were delivered to the school about a week later.
The screening, glasses and delivery are free of charge to students’ families. The clinics are open to all Promise Partnership Schools
and community members. Students in kindergarten, first, third and fifth grades were initially screened in
an annual effort coordinated by Roosevelt’s PTA and the school nurse and
staffed by volunteers. Students from other grades were also tested, based on
teacher recommendations. All students who did not pass the screening were
given information to pass on to their parents about free and low-cost options for
eye care in South Salt Lake. Access the vision support they need, regardless
of cost, insurance or access to clinics help the students in school and ultimately
reach our community’s goal for education.
The Mobile Vision Clinic travels throughout South Salt Lake and the surrounding
areas to provide free exams to community members in need. The Mobile Vision
Clinics are made possible through a partnership with United Way of Salt Lake,
Utah Partners For Health and Charity Vision.

Utah Partners for Health’s Mobile Clinics Are Like Going to
Neighborhood Doctor
Utah Partners for Health has been operating mobile medical clinics to provide access to healthcare for the underserved since 2007. The mobile clinic is out three times a week at 26 locations, providing free medical care, prescriptions, and referrals to more than 3,000
individuals each year. The mobile clinic’s mission – as reflected in the slogan, ‘It’s like going to the doctor in your own neighborhood.’
They strive to remove as many of the barriers underserved individuals face as possible in accessing care such as lack of income,
insurance, and affordable transportation as well as language and cultural differences.
In 2013, a mobile eye clinic was added with a partnership with Charity Vision to provide free exams and access to free and low-cost
prescription eyewear. The mobile clinics collaborate with community-based organizations and schools, in conjunction with the United
Way to improve the well-being of Salt Lake County residents.
Utah Partners for Health is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide
compassionate, comprehensive, quality care
to empower underserved individuals, families,

Mental Health First Aid Services Helps to ‘Flip The Script’ on
Mental Health Issues
National leaders such as First Lady Michelle Obama are saying the time has come to “flip the script” on mental health by breaking
through the silence and stigma surrounding these issues. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) emphasizes personalized training to
introduce people on how to identify risk factors and warning signs pointing to mental health and substance use problems. Instructors
use a five-step action plan to help people get the care their loved ones need in their community.
MHFA is similar to the objectives of CPR, which has trained many people to help save lives. MHFA trains people like you and me
to assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. In the MHFA course, trainees will learn risk factors and warning signs for
mental health and addiction disorders, as well as strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations.
The South Salt Lake Recreation

The City of South Salt Lake took the next step toward creating a downtown for South Salt Lake by adopting a new master plan in
December. The plan encourages office space, retail, and multi-family housing to create a complete community. It also proposes several
new roads, bike lanes and wide sidewalks to create a walkable downtown. The plan features a new downtown park that is anticipated
to be funded through new development. The 200-acre area between 2100 South and I-80 from I-15 West to State Street will likely see
up to 7,000 new residents and up to 20,000 new jobs. Building heights are expected to range from two to eight stories.
The master plan outlines a vision and standards for design that are upheld by new zoning regulations. These regulations will slowly
phase out industrial and warehouse uses in favor of more urban uses. The new zoning will be up for a City Council vote in January.
Rockstar Employee: Julie Taylor
Julie Taylor has worked for the Community and Economic Development Department for three years.
She was hired as the city’s first Business Outreach Coordinator and was tasked with something we
had not done before – making the first contact with our 2,100 businesses and asking them how we
can work better together. She has worked hard to gain the trust of local businesses and understand
their needs. She works hard to help them resolve business issues and to help them grow and be
successful.
Because of her accomplishments, Julie was promoted to Business License Official. Julie also works
with the Chamber of Commerce and is a vital part of their Women in Business Committee. She
has helped them plan many successful Chamber and City events, including the recent Business

within the boundaries of South Salt Lake City and priority is given to streets which carry the largest traffic volume.

Parking cars off the street helps make plowing easier for everyone. City ordinance requires residents to move their vehicles off the street
when there is an accumulation of snow or ice on the roadway. A citation may be issued if vehicles are not moved. Vehicles parked on
the roadway make it very difficult to remove snow and ice effectively and may cause damage to parked vehicles. On street vehicles

Coffee With A Cop
Coffee with a Cop is part of a
national initiative to create a
common venue for community
members and police officers
to come together. There are no
agendas or speeches; just the
opportunity to ask questions,
voice concerns, and the chance
to get to know the officers in
their local neighborhoods. South
Salt Lake Chamber supports
the program as an ongoing way
for businesses to increase their
involvement in the community’s
safety. The event takes place
on the first Wednesday of each
month, from 9-10 a.m. at 2929
S. State St. The next session is
Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Kids & Tech: 10 Tips for Parents in the Digital Age
In a world where children are “growing up digital,” it is important to help them learn healthy and ethically responsible concepts of
digital use and citizenship. Parents play an important role in teaching these skills. Here are a few tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to help parents manage the digital landscape they are
exploring with their children.
Treat media the same as any other environment in
the child's life. The same parenting guidelines apply
in both real and virtual environments. Set limits, as
kids need and expect them. Know their friends, both
online and off. Know what platforms, software, and
apps children are using, where they are going on the
web, and what they are doing online.
Set limits and encourage playtime. Tech use, like
all other activities, should have reasonable limits.
Unstructured and offline play stimulates creativity.
Make unplugged playtime a daily priority, especially
for very young children. And, do not forget to make
unplugged play an activity for the entire family.
Families who play together, learn together. Family participation is also great for media activities as an opportunity to
encourage social interactions, bonding, and learning. Play a video game with kids, which can be a good way to demonstrate good
sportsmanship and gaming etiquette. And, parents should introduce and share their own life experiences and perspectives—and
guidance—while playing the game.
Be a good role model. Teach and model kindness and good manners online. And, because children are great mimics, parents
should be mindful of their own media use. In fact, parents will be more available for and connected with children while interacting,
hugging and playing with them rather than simply staring at a screen. Know the value of face-to-face communication. Very young children learn best through two-way communication. Engaging
in back-and-forth "talk time" is critical for language development. Conversations can be face-to-face or, if necessary, by video
chat, with a traveling parent or grandparent who lives far away. Research indicates that "back-and-forth conversation" improves
language skill much more so than "passive" listening or one-way interaction with a screen.
Create tech-free zones. Keep family mealtimes and other family and social gatherings tech-free. Recharge devices overnight
outside the bedroom to help children avoid the temptation to use them when they should be sleeping. These changes encourage
more family time, healthier eating habits and better sleep, all critical for children's wellness.
Don't use technology as an emotional pacifier. Media can be very effective in keeping kids calm and quiet, but it also should
not be the only way they learn to calm themselves. Children need to be taught how to identify and handle strong emotions, come
up with activities to manage boredom, or calm down through breathing, talking about ways to solve the problem, and finding other
strategies for channeling emotions.
Apps for kids: do the homework. More than 80,000 apps are labeled as educational, but little research has demonstrated their
actual effective impact. Products pitched as "interactive" should require more than "pushing and swiping." Look to organizations
like Common Sense Media for reviews about age-appropriate apps, games, and programs as a guide in making the best choices
for children.
It's OK for teens to be online. Online relationships are part of typical adolescent development. Social media can support teens
as they explore and discover more about themselves and their place in the grown-up world. Just be sure teens are behaving
appropriately in both the real and online worlds. Many teens need to be reminded that a platform's privacy settings do not make
things actually "private" and that images, thoughts, and behaviors teens share online will instantly become a part of their digital
footprint indefinitely. Keep lines of communication open and let them know the space and time to discuss are always available if
they have questions or concerns.
Remember: Kids will be kids. Kids will make mistakes using media. Try to handle errors with empathy and turn a mistake into
a teachable moment. But some indiscretions, such as sexting, bullying, or posting self-harm images, may be a red flag that hints
at trouble ahead. Parents should take a closer look at their child's behaviors and, if needed, enlist supportive professional help,
including from the family pediatrician. Media and digital devices are an integral part of the world today. The benefits of these devices, if used moderately and
appropriately, can be great. But, research has shown that face-to-face time with family, friends, and teachers plays a pivotal and
even more important role in promoting children's learning and healthy development. Keep the face-to-face up front, and do not let
it get lost behind a stream of media and tech.
