public.Hazardsincludesnags,stumpholesand
rollingmaterial.
• Snags,standingdeadtrees,areleftinvarious
stagesofstability,decayanddamage.Someare
nearlyburnedthroughontheirtrunksandcan
givewayundertheslightestwind.Firefighters
aretrainedtosteerclearofsnagpatchesandto
alwaysbeawareofoverheadhazards.
• Stumpholesremainafterfirehasconsumeda
treestump.Belowgroundportionsandtherootsystemsmolderslowly,oftenforweeksafterafire.
Theseholescanbecompletelyhiddenbyashandcancauselegandankleinjuries,aswellassevere
burns.
• Rollingmaterialcanbeasignificanthazardinareaswithsteepslopes.Asfireburnsthroughanarea,it
consumesleaves,needles,branchesandlogs.Bouldersandlogsoncesupportedbythismaterial
becomeunstableandcanbeeasilydislodgedbyrainorotherdisturbances,evenpeoplewalking.This
canbeespeciallydangeroustofirecrews.Firefightersmovingalongaslopemaycausetheselarge
hazardstorolltowardcrewmembersbelow.
