September Luncheon to Focus on Sports Tourism
Each year, our Chamber acknowledges the economic impact of tourism
on our community with an awards
luncheon. This year, the luncheon will
focus on Sports Tourism with keynote
speaker Laura Dixon.
Laura Dixon is the chairman of the
Dallas/Fort Worth Area Council Sports Marketing
Co-op, an honor she attributes to the time she has
spent directing the sports marketing efforts for the
city of Plano. Her most lauded community relations effort for the Plano CVB was the creation of
the YES! (Youth Explore Sports) Expo, which was
honored as the National Association of Sports
Commissions’ “Best Locally Created Event.”
Dixon has served as the Deputy Director of the
Dallas Mavericks International Global Games,
worked as the Special Team Chair for the Dallas
Race for the Cure, and co-chaired the grassroots
marketing campaign for the Big 12 Women’s BasThanks to Our September Sponsors:
ketball Championship. She also served on the staff
of the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Sports Commission, the Dallas 2012 Olympic Trials Organizing
Committee, and the Dallas CVB Sports Marketing

Autumn in Sight
August brought us a variety of weather…the hottest of the summer,
then some rain and cooler days. August at the Chamber showed the
same variety - a major annual event, assistance to our smallest and
largest employers, and preparations for the year coming up, among
other activities.
The fifth annual West Texas Legislative Summit at ASU received
the highest compliments of any so far, thanks in large part to
Fred Hernandez
efforts of State Representative Drew Darby, who invited legisla- Chairman of the Board
tors from throughout the state to a familiarization tour of San
Angelo one day and the Summit itself the next. The topic of “Transportation Challenges
and Opportunities in West Texas” was timely for local participants and our regional guests,
with top notch speakers laying out options for future challenges. Appreciation is extended
to sponsors Drew Darby, Angelo State University, and State Senator Robert Duncan, along
with underwriters AEP Texas, AT&T, Atmos Energy, Performant DCS, Shannon Medical
Center, Texas Midwest Community Network and Verizon Communications.
Thanks to all who attended the August 12 luncheon featuring Mayor JW Lown and City
Manager Harold Dominguez for a “State of the City” presentation sponsored by 1st Community Federal Credit Union. Watch for information regarding partnerships on downtown
revitalization and other initiatives proposed. Thanks also to 1st Community FCU for sponsoring our Business After Hours August 27 at the 1st Community Credit Union Spur Arena.
By now, I hope you’ve received a mailing with the new Images magazine, upcoming
events, and a ballot presenting a slate of new board members offered by the Chamber’s
Nominating Committee. You also should have received an email or fax with the Chamber’s
annual survey for you to tell us how we are doing, and how we may better serve you and
your priorities. Please let our office know if either of these did not reach you.
Here are some events coming up that I hope you’ll consider:
• Booth space will sell out for the Chamber’s October 7 Business Showcase soon. The
theme is “Western, TEXAS Style,” and this is the Chamber’s premier marketing event.

• The next Business After Hours is scheduled October 7 in conjunction with Business
Showcase at the Wells Fargo Pavilion from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., and the Silent Auction will
conclude at the same time. More items are needed for the Silent Auction, and you may contact Sandra at the contact information above to donate.
• The Membership Luncheon on September 9 will showcase tourism, with Plano CVB
Sports Marketing Consultant Laura Dixon the featured speaker. The event will take place at
the River Terrace Restaurant Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 11:30 to 1. Sponsors are Cal-Tech, and
Keith Mortimore and Sally Reid with Wachovia Securities. Reservations may be made by
calling 655-4136 ext. 232, or emailing [email protected].
• Schedule a business advising or a brainstorming session through the Chamber with the
representatives from ASU’s Small Business Development Center. They will be at the
Chamber office on September 8 and 22. Call Phil at 655-4136 ext. 222 for appointment
times or more information.
• The fantastic half-day “Engage!” motivational workshop featuring Tutt & Daggs takes
place Sept. 16 at the San Angelo Convention Center from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Register or get

• Finally, have some fun and raise money for a good cause by participating in the Military Affairs Committee’s 16th annual Goodfellow Friendship Golf Tournament on Friday,
Sept. 19 at Quicksand Golf Course. Proceeds benefit Project WarmHeart, which assists
military personnel in time of need, particularly while family members are deployed. The
cost to play is $65 per person, or $55 for Quicksand members, and sponsorships and door

Capacity Crowd Attends 5th Annual West Texas Legislative Summit
A series of top-notch speakers contributed to the success of this year’s
West Texas Legislative Summit, which focused on transportation challenges and opportunities. Over 200 people attended the Summit. Among
the excellent lineup of speakers was (left) Amadeo Saenz, Jr., Executive
Director of the Texas Department of Transportation. (Middle) Mayor J.
W. Lown introduced U.S. Senator John Cornyn at a press conference immediately after the Senator spoke to Summit participants. (Right) State
Representative Drew Darby showcased San Angelo to members of the
House of Representatives who traveled to San Angelo the day before the
Summit. About 10 representatives enjoyed a tour of our community as
well as a reception and dinner at the San Angelo Museum of Fine
Arts. Many thanks to our partners – Representative Drew Darby, Senator
Robert Duncan and Angelo State University – for making the 5th annual
Summit the largest to date. Copies of the handouts may be requested by

Longtime Volunteer Recognized
For 28 years of his life, Mr. Loyd Bell
has been committed to the San Angelo State Park. He is a volunteer and
has given much of his time and efforts to the Park . In 2007, Bell, now
87 , was named Senior Citizen of the
Year, and was awarded $2,500.
In July, with the help of the Texas
Department of Criminal Justice work
crew, a new addition to the existing
trail system at the San Angelo State Park was completed. The trailhead entrance has been dedicated to
Mr. Bell. Congratulations, and thank you for all your
hard work and dedication through the years!

recognizing her for classes she has
taken in the field. The CVB attended the Texas Association of

MENTORING OPPORTUNITY - PAYS SCHOOL
The Education Partnership has worked with the San Angelo Independent School District to identify areas in which
your business can become involved to help our students excel. The most critical area for immediate impact this
next year may be in mentoring students in the re-instituted academic alternative school, PAYS.
There will be 60 high school students on the PAYS Campus. They must meet stringent attendance and behavioral
guidelines in order to attend school for a half day until they graduate. A positive stable, encouraging presence in
each student’s life is essential to many reaching their goal. We are asking for a minimum of one face –to-face
meeting per month, along with other contact and encouragement by phone or email.
There are also other mentoring opportunities if you prefer. But the important thing is– act now! Make a difference
in a student’s life. Recruit others, and sign up below. We’ll invite you to an information/training session, or meet
you at your place of employment.
