NORTH BANK – Kaiapoi Island Motor Cross Park
The Kaiapoi Island Motor Cross Park consists of
40ha of tracks, jumps and a learner’s area.
It has been created for those who like to ride formed
circuits in a safe environment and to cater for all
ability levels.
Park Rules
Track Maintenance
Please ensure you follow the Park rules outlined in the Trail
Bike Code of Conduct which is at the start of most trails in
this area. See main map and below.
This occurs periodically throughout the year.
All tracks in this area are to be ridden anti-clockwise.
Access to the site
Keep an eye on notice boards, signage and our Facebook
page for updates as some work may require closures or
changes to the track layout.
Designated Area
The Kaiapoi Island Motor Cross Park is located on the
north side of the Waimakariri River 3.5 km upstream of
the motorway bridge.
• No marked or actively maintained trails in this zone.
• Standard road rules apply if riding on formed road.
• When riding on stopbanks and groynes ride only on
formed roads and access ramps.

Kaiapoi Island Motor Cross
Safety Rules:
There is around 40km of river berm area between
Diversion Road and Browns Rock, preferred access is
Downs Road. The main map on this brochure shows the
area from Diversion Road to Downs Road but the available
area extends a further 18km west to Browns Rock.
Please note there are:
Riders have been allocated a designated area for use.
Riding at Kaiapoi Island (the area from the gate near Taylors
Road downstream to the Confluence of the Kaiapoi and
Waimakariri River), and Baynons Brake Horse Park (which
extends up to Harrs Road) is prohibited for trail bikes.
The main access to the area is from Taylors Road.
The map below shows how to get to Taylors Road
from SH1 bridge.

SOUTH BANK – Destination Trail Riding and Quad Bike Area
Trail bikers have used the South bank
of the Waimakariri River for many
years. This area is still available for
trail biking although there are now
controls in place.
Riding upstream of Intake Road
Riding on the River Bed
There is around 23km of river berm area between Intake
Road and The Gorge available for people to ride.
Birds – Riverbed birds nesting is from mid-August to
January. Please do not ride in open shingle areas during
this time.
Riders using this area must park at Intake Road and head
upstream – there is no downstream access.
The map below clearly shows the
area for designated trail biking on the
South bank. Riders can ride continuously
for 10km upstream, from Haul Road to Weedons Ross
Road and back.

Prohibited areas – the area from the river mouth up to
Haul Road is prohibited for trail bikes.
Trail Maintenance
The marked trails will be maintained a few times a year.
These trails are at a more basic level than the Motor Cross
Park and therefore allowed to be in a more ‘natural’ state.
Riders can also link up with the 8km loop track
that exists on the river berm just upstream of
Weedons Ross Road, making a total of 28km
of maintained trails.

An area of 35ha is available for quad bike use. The carpark
is on Haul Road 1.2km from McLeans Island Road.
