Welcome to Istanbul University Faculty of
Science Biology Department Botany Division
Alfred Heilbronn Botanical Garden, a
garden dedicated to the conservation of plant
diversity, education and research.
1935 y×l×ndan bu yana bahçede, büyük bitki
koleksiyonlar×n×n çekici bir peyzaj içerisinde
sergilenmesi, nadir ve endemik bitkilerin
korunmas×, öùrencilerin eùitilmesi ve bilimsel
araüt×rma etkinliklerinin yürütülmesi üzerine
odaklan×lm×üt×r.
Since 1935, the garden has focused on
developing one of the largest plant collections
displayed within the attractive landscape,
conserving rare and endemic plants, educating
students and conducting research activities.
In 2011, Coimbra Group which includes the
oldest and the most established universities of
Europe, accepted only Istanbul University
from Turkey and Alfred Heilbronn Botanical
Garden has taken place as a key garden
representing our university.

Türkiye’den sadece ústanbul Üniversitesi’ni
kabul etmiü ve Alfred Heilbronn Botanik

Ord. Prof. Dr. Alfred Heilbronn, 1885
y×l×nda Fürth - Almanya’da doùmuü ve
Yüksek Öùrenimini Münih Ludwig –
Maximillian Üniversitesi Tabii úlimler’de
tamamlam×üt×r. 1933 y×l×ndaki Üniversite
reformuyla ústanbul Üniversitesi’ne
gelmiü ve Fen Fakültesi’nde görevine
baülam×üt×r.
Ord. Prof. Dr. Alfred Heilbronn was born
in 1885, Fürth – Germany, and completed
his Higher Education in Munich Ludwig
– Maximillian University Natural
Sciences. He has come to Istanbul
University after the University reform in
1933 and started to work at Faculty of
Science.

vermek için görevlendirildiùi ilk
günden beri akl×nda olan bir konudur.

The initiative to establish a Botanical
Garden at Istanbul University came from
Ord. Prof. Dr. Alfred Heilbronn when he
was giving lectures in Istanbul. The
construction of the garden was started in
1934.

Istanbulensis), Ord. Prof. Dr. Alfred
Heilbronn ile kendisine büyük destek veren
Ord. Prof. Dr. Leo Brauner ve bahçe
uzmanlar×n×n katk×lar×yla 1935’te kurularak
hizmet vermeye baülam×üt×r. Ord. Prof. Dr.
Alfred Heilbronn, Botanik Bahçesi’nin
Avrupa'daki geliümiü benzerlerine uygun
üartlara sahip olmas× için çok emek sarf
etmiütir.
I.U. Botanical Garden (Hortus Botanicus
Istanbulensis) was established and began
operating in 1935 with contributions from Ord.
Prof. Dr. Leo Brauner, who supported Ord.
Prof. Dr. Alfred Heilbronn in arranging the
garden and in education along with garden
curators. Ord. Prof. Dr. Alfred Heilbronn
worked hard to ensure that the botanical garden
was compatible to its advanced counterparts in
Europe.

In 2003, the garden was renamed as Istanbul
University Faculty of Science Alfred Heilbronn
Botanical Garden in honor of Ord. Prof. Dr.
Alfred Heilbronn.

Bahçede 6 sera (Araüt×rma, Kaktüs,
Orkide, Yaùmur orman×, Tropikal
meyve, Sikas) ve 23 havuz
bulunmaktad×r.

Aç×k alanlarda, aùaç ve çal×lar× içeren
400 odunsu bitki türü, 160 familyadan
3500 otsu bitki ile Türkiye floras× için
nadir ve endemik bitkiler
bulunmaktad×r. Bahçede toplam 6000
bitki türü (yerli ve yabanc×)
sergilenmektedir ve seralarda farkl×
tropikal bölgelerden gelmiü 2500
egzotik tür bulunmaktad×r.

Turkey has the richest and interesting
flora in the temperate zone with
approximately 9000 vascular plant
species from 165 families.
‡
3000 plant species approximately
(3022 species and 3403 taxon) are
endemic for Turkey (35% of the total
number grow only in Turkey).
‡
AHBG covers an area of 15,000 m²
and is divided into 6 sections:
Systematic division, Rock garden,
Medicinal plants, Turkish plants,
Experimental fields and Arboretum.
There are 6 greenhouses (Research,
Cactus, Orchid, Rainforest, Tropical
fruits, Cycas) and 23 pools in the
garden.

400 woody plants including trees and
shrubs, 3500 herbal plant specimens
from 160 families, some endemic and
rare plants for Turkish flora are
located in the open fields. Totally,
6000 plant species (native and exotic)
are exhibited in the garden and
greenhouses contain 2500 exotic
specimens from different tropical
regions.

botanical library and botanical
research laboratories are also found.

Turkey has a wide diversity of
habitats and climatic conditions
resulting from geological,
topographical and continental
characteristics of Anatolia as a
meeting place of three
phytogeographical regions including
Euro-Siberian, Mediterranean, and
Irano-Turanian.

In Alfred Heilbronn Botanical
Garden, you can see many endemic
plants species found in Turkey and
also exotic species belong to the other
countries.

It provides conservation,
reproduction and reintroduction of
rare and endemic taxa of Istanbul
flora (44 globally threatened species)
A special section of the Garden is
devoted to ex -situ conservation and
multiplication of the bulbous plants
of Anatolia at risk in the wild.
