Students at Baker County Middle School were excited to start the new year.
The 2016/2017 school year
is officially here. Students from
kindergarten to high school have
been preparing for the last couple
of weeks to get back into the mode
with early bedtimes and even
earlier mornings. Our local retail
stores have been picked over for
everything from pencils and crayons
to folders and paper. Ah, the smell
of brand new school supplies fill
classrooms across the county as the
first day of school unfolds. Students

schools. This day brings a feeling
of anticipation that is like no other.
No amount of internet research can
predict what this year will bring.
There are no spoiler alerts to warn
of the choices our students will
be faced with or the grades they
will make. Teachers will face new
students, new parents and new
challenges; while students will face
new teachers, new material and
new class schedules. The one thing
that can be predicted is as it began
so it will also end, and another year
will have gone by. How the days in
between
will be
filled will
be based
loosely on
skill, much
on attitude
and even
more on
preparedness. Resign yourselves
to encourage children, parents and
teachers during times of frustration
and remind them of the good work
that they do and the many times
their hard work has paid off. A new
broom always sweeps clean in the
beginning, but it is with time and
maintenance that its true worth is
shown. So dig your heels in and give
it your all, and we believe for many
of you, this might just be your best
year yet!

Like many college freshmen,
Kristen Kempfert thought she had
her future completely figured out.
Kempfert wanted to go to law school,
so she enrolled at the University of
Florida as an English major. When
that didn’t feel right, she switched to
political science, then to linguistics,
then to engineering. Suddenly, she
felt adrift, uncertain about which
path to choose.
At the end of her freshman
year, Kempfert had to take four
credits over the summer to keep
her scholarship. Having already
found a three-credit course, she was
browsing the list of course offerings
when she stumbled upon “Plants,
Gardening and You”, a one-credit
course offered by the department
of environmental horticulture in the
UF College of Agricultural and Life
Sciences (CALS).
Kempfert had always enjoyed
tending her small herb garden back
home – so she signed up.
Now a horticulture science senior,
Kempfert says taking that summer
course was a turning point. “I
realized that I really loved plants,”
she said. “Working with plants was
a career I’d never even considered or
realized was an industry.”
For her CALS honors program
project, she’s researching
mycorrhizal fungi, a special kind of
fungus that lives in the soil and can

help plants better absorb nutrients
and water. It’s a subject she never
gets tired of. “The more I read about
how these organisms work together,
the more I realize there is so much
we don’t know about them,” she
said.
Kempfert credits finding her
passion to her initial CALS adviser,
Amy Vasquez, who helped her
transition into CALS. “My favorite
thing about CALS is the advising,”
Kempfert said. “We have a really
big support system. I can email my
adviser and she is always available
to see me.”
Kempfert encourages all students
to take advantage of academic
advising, especially if they are
unsure of which direction they want
their college career to take.
After getting her bachelor’s
degree, Kempfert plans to pursue a
master’s degree and then a doctorate
in plant pathology. However, she
acknowledges that nothing is ever
set in stone when it comes to the
future. “I’ve learned that you can’t
plan everything,” she said.

School has now begun. Children
are often excited to see friends they
have not seen all summer, teachers that
they have had in the past that have
opened their horizons, and new classes
that they think they will like. Children
who have been taken away from their
families due to neglect or abuse and
are wards of the State often have a
very different experience. They have
changed schools so many times that
they are behind in classes, they have
no friends, and know that everyone
will soon figure out they are in foster
care. Even if they would be good at
something like soccer or basketball,
they don’t have anyone who will pay
for the costs of extracurricular activities
or get them to practice. This is not a
normal nor acceptable life for any child.
They feel alone, different, left out and
inadequate.
These are the children that
desperately need someone to keep
reminding them that they have
potential, that they can succeed. That
they are someone who deserves to
have friends and people who believe
in them. Someone who really cares and
genuinely likes and values that child for
who they are.

Taking stock in children is one
of the greatest things you can do;
stocking your personal pond with
fish for the neighborhood kids, even
better. Lin Adams, entrepreneur
and a woman with an amazing
compassion for people, raised two
boys of her own and understands
how important it is for youth to stay
busy. She recently noticed in her
surrounding neighborhood there
were quite a few growing young
boys in need of something to do.
You have all heard the saying,
“Idle hands are the devil’s
workshop,” but hands holding a
fishing rod are good as gold. Lin’s
property has a large pond on it which
she knew would make a perfect
fishing hole for the neighborhood
kids. She approached one of the
mothers about her idea and was met
with equal enthusiasm, and
so she made arrangements
to have the pond stocked
with bass and brim. She was
confident in her decision to
open her pond to the kids,
but if she did have any
second thoughts they were
quickly extinguished when
immediately following her
announcement, a young
man in his mid-teens came
over to personally thank her
for her generous offer. She
was overwhelmed that someone of
his age realized the value of her gift
and did not want it to go unnoticed.
About a week later, the young man,
Joel, his mother and a handful of
neighborhood boys showed up at
the pond with fishing poles in hand
ready to watch the fish be put into
their new home. Shongaloo Fisheries
came out with both bass and bluegill
that should be big enough to fish for
by the spring. The boys practiced
casting their lines and reeling them
in. Ms. Lin’s dad even got a fishing
lesson from Joel. It was a feel good
day for everyone and spring can’t
come soon enough for the whole lot
that showed. Thank you Ms. Lin for
bringing neighbors together, offering
kids a safe and fun outlet, and for
being a blessing to our community!

Political Network
The Baker Women’s Political
Network (BWPN) has been growing
strong in our community for over
fifteen years. Gedone Pracher
started the group when she came
back to her home town of Baker
County after a 30 year absence.
She realized in her return that there
were more people in the area that
were registered Democrats than
Republicans, but were not educated
about the differences between the
two parties. She also
wanted to give back
to the community that
she had grown up in
while weaving in her
love of politics. Since
the BWPN inception,
they have raised much
needed money for the
Veterans, cancer victims
and cystic fibrosis. Today
they stand strong with
almost twenty members
and pride themselves on
their relationships within
the Republican party and
their roots in Baker.
This past Monday,
they rallied together
at Calendar’s Pizzeria
with 12 Republican
Candidates for a “Pizza
and Politics” meet and
greet that allowed
the candidates an
opportunity to introduce
themselves and spend
time talking to the public
about their stand on
important issues and
to reveal who they are
as regular people. The
response was a packed
house from the front
to the back of people
wanting to learn more
about those running
for position in office.
Speakers included
Tiffany McInarnay and Clay Griffis
for the school board seat; County
Commissioner hopefuls Cathy
Rhoden, Bobby Steele, James Croft,
and Sharon Padgett; Amy Dugger
who is seeking Baker County Tax
Collector; Scotty Rhoden for Sheriff;
Marco Rubio and Liz Porter for State
Representative, and Glo Smith
who is running for U.S. Congress
Representative. All in all, the event
was a complete success and a great
opportunity for many. We would
like to thank all the hands involved
in everything from decorating to
communication and networking, it
would not have gone as smoothly

university, I was often shocked by

Kevin Van Der Shaaf competes
in an average of ten events a year
and has been cooking with his team,
Double Deuce Smokin’ BBQ, since
2014. A newer team, they really
surprised in 2015 at Apalachicola’s
Annual Butts and Clucks Barbeque
Cook-Off last year when they won
the Grand Champions Belt, first in
chicken and pork, as well as Best
Display.
When it comes to BBQ
competition, Dana Hillis has done
it all! With more than 30 Grand
Championships and another 36
Reserve Grand Championships
under his belt, he’s won
more than 70 barbecue
contests and walked away
with more than a hundred
first place category wins.
His team, Big Papa’s Country
Kitchen, was the Florida
Barbecue Association’s Team
of the Year for 2010 and 2012,
won Best Ribs in America
at the 2011 USA BBQ
Championship in Las Vegas
and even made it onto the

SIZEMORE - Mr. Pete F. Sizemore, Jr., age
93 of Glen St. Mary,
passed away Friday,
August 5, 2016. A long
time Baker County
resident, Mr. Sizemore
was born in Illinois
to the late Pete and
Mary Etta Sizemore Sr.
He was a pilot in the
United States Navy and
served for twenty-one
years. Upon his Navy
retirement, he became a private pilot, flying
for Jacksonville National Bank and the State
of Florida. For a time, he enjoyed building gokart engines and racing go karts in Maxville
and Macclenny. He enjoyed boating, skiing
and fishing. He was a fan of all sports, but he
especially loved watching St. Louis Cardinals
baseball. Mr. Sizemore was also an avid golfer.
He will be remembered as a very kind and
giving person. He is survived by his wife of fifty
seven years: Sara Sizemore; daughter: Danielle
Sizemore and granddaughter: DeAnna Brown,
both of Jacksonville; niece: Toni Raulerson of
Macclenny; brother-in-law: Carl Brantley Fraser
of Macclenny; and sisters-in-law: Fay (Conny)
Fiser of Macclenny and Marion (Virgil) Raulerson
of Lake City. Numerous nieces, nephews and
other family members also survive. He was
preceded in death by his parents, five sisters
and one brother. Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 in the chapel of
Forbes Funeral Home with Reverend David
Thomas officiating. Burial followed at Manntown
Cemetery, Glen St. Mary. Arrangements
are under the care and direction of FORBES

TAYLOR - Doris L. Taylor, age 94, passed
into the loving arms
of her Lord and
Savior on Wednesday,
August 3, 2016. Born
and raised in Taylor,
FL, she lived a full
and compassionate
Christian life as a wife,
mother and caregiver.
She loved her
role as wife for over
50 years to the late
Reverend Coy Taylor, visiting churches all over
Florida and Georgia, and embraced her life
within the church community. When her health
failed and she went to live her final years in
her “new home” at W. Frank Wells Nursing
Home, she became a prayer warrior, as she felt
that was her given role in life at that time. She
touched many lives, and all who met her will
remember her with a smile in their heart.

are easily told with love and laughter. Her

She leaves behind a loving family, son
Bryan Taylor, daughter Melaine Taylor, and her
niece and nephew she loved and raised as her
own children, Leo Taylor (Claudia) and Shirley
Taylor Wright. She had one grandson, Anthony
(Candice) Taylor, a granddaughter, Brittany
Taylor, and three great-grandchildren. She has
a sister, Faye (Dickie) Davis and brother Zade
(Carolyn) Cowart. She was blessed with a
large and loving extended family of nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held at Taylor Church,
Taylor FL, on Saturday, August 6, 2016 with

decorating, and jewelry
making. She was
also known to have a green thumb and was
an exceptional gardener. She loved spending
time with her friends and family, especially
her grandchildren. She is survived by her son:
Jeff (Julie) Barton of Glen St. Mary; daughters:
Tonya (Tom) Wasson of Sanderson, Michelle
(Joe) Davis of Baxter, Cynthia Kelly of Darrien,
GA, and Kasey Kroger-Dankner of Gainesville;
brother: Johnny (Julie) Burnham of Macclenny;
sisters: Frances Crews of Ponce de Leon, Florida,
Willie Mae (T.C.) Green of Macclenny, and
Linda (Buddy) Barton of Moniac, GA. Fifteen
grandchildren and nine great grandchildren
also survive. She was preceded in death by
her husband: Max Wheeler, parents: Joe and
Maggie Burnham and brother: Rufus Burnham.

SPIRITUALWARFARE
Effective Praying
Praying is a spiritual communion with
God, as in supplication, thanksgiving,
adoration, or confession. We can
accomplish much with this tremendous
power (James 5:16).
God hastens His Words to be
accomplished (Jeremiah 1:12). They won’t
return to Him empty, but shall come to
pass (Isaiah 55:11). As we speak what God
spoke, we become a part of this process,
for our prayers will contain the meat of
God’s Word to achieve precise results. No
longer will our prayers be generic with lack
of substance, or words just thrown out of
our mouths that don’t agree with God. His
words came down to us, and we can return
them to Him in our prayers, expecting their
fulfilment.
Praying God’s strict words will take
training as we diligently search ideas
for prayer. Then we practice by bringing
those words to God’s remembrance – not
that He has to be reminded of what He
said, but to show Him that we have done
our homework for a specific purpose (II
Timothy 2:15).
We can read prayers in our Bibles that
we can pray, too. They only need our action
to be taken, like when Paul prayed for the
church of Ephesus. See Ephesians 1:1618. We can make this prayer personal by
inserting ourselves into the verses to be
the objects of that prayer [That the God of
MY Lord Jesus… may give unto ME the
spirit… the eyes of MY understanding…
that I may know… etc.]. See Ephesians
3:16-19. Do the same kind of inserting […
grant ME according… dwell in MY heart…
that I, being rooted… that I might be
filled…].

• Colossians 1:9-11
• II Thessalonians 1:11-12
• II Thessalonians 3:1-5
• (Don’t stop here. Add to this list.)
Look at Psalm 91:1-16 about dwelling
in the secret place of the Most High. These
are verses for confidence, security, and
blessings as we dwell in Him. Make them
personal for yourself. In time, reach further
by inserting the names of others.
Remember that prayer is not
preparation for spiritual warfare – it IS the
warfare. Praying the Lord’s words will
change lives because we changed our
approach to effective praying!

My fellow teacher called me for
help. She needed someone who knew
about animals – as a science teacher,
I t the bill. “Oh,” she added, “bring a
net.” Expecting to nd some kind of wild
beast as I entered her classroom, I was
greeted instead by the sight of excited
kids watching a hummingbird y around.
Rather than use the net, I suggested
they hang a red piece of construction
paper by an open door. The bird
would be drawn to it, I explained, and
eventually y out. Later, the teacher
called back. The trick worked. “Now,”
she said, “we have two hummingbirds
ying around the room.”

When Doris Keen was born at home
on July 30, 1920 in the northern section of
Baker County, Dr. E.W. Crockett, Sr. came
home that night and said to his wife,
Veatrice, “I’ve just delivered the prettiest
little girl baby that is just perfect for
our son.” Their son, E.W. Crockett, Jr.,
was three months and three days old
at the time. Years later the couple met
at the Community Center in McClenny
and a year later, married. Doris and
‘Junior’ owned the downtown Sundry
Store where they offered curb-service.
Cokes sold for five cents. People would
drive up in their car and toot their car
horn and Doris would go out to take the
order whether it was one person or more.
She would attach a little tray to the car
window and put their order on it. When
they finished, they would toot their car
horn again and she would have to go
back out and get the dirty glasses. All
for a five-cent sale. When Doris arrived
at the Sundry Store each morning, she
had to sweep and clean up. The ice man
brought ice in blocks, which was stored
in an ice box. She had to chip pieces of
it with an ice pick, and then grind it by
hand for the soda fountain drinks. In
addition they sold milkshakes, vanilla
Cokes, lime sours, cherry Cokes, root
beer floats, etc. The lovely ranch style
home the Crocketts built was situated
on a hill on the north side of Hwy 90
between McClenny and Glen St. Mary.
It was the most beautiful home in the
county and still known as the Crockett
home today (2011).
After the war Doris and Junior sold
the Sundry Store to their friends Paul
and Violet Rhoden. Paul had been hired
years before by Junior’s father, Dr. E.W.
Crockett, as the Sundry’s first sodajerk. The name was changed to Paul’s
Rexall Drugs. Paul soon after became
the county’s first pharmacist, and for
the first time county citizens could have
a prescription filled without going into
Jacksonville. The building is known as
the Crockett Building in 2011 in honor of
Junior’s father, Dr. E.W. Crockett, who
was murdered in 1937. Enjoy Doris’s
recipe for Lemon Pie.
LEMON PIE
• 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
• 1/4 cup cornstarch
• 1/4 cup flour
• 1/4 tsp. salt
• 2 cups boiling water
• 3 eggs (separated)
• 1-1/2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
• 6 Tbsp. lemon juice
• 2 Tbsp. butter
• 6 Tbsp. powdered sugar or two of
granulated (for frosting)
Combine 1-1/2 cups sugar,
cornstarch, salt, flour gradually, stir
in boiling water and cook, stirring
constantly until mixture thickens. Mix
together slightly beaten egg yolks, lemon
rind and juice, add to mixture and cook
two minutes longer. Remove from fire
and add butter, slightly cool and turn into
baked pastry shell. Cover with meringue
made by gradually beating sugar into the
stiffly beaten egg whites.

Over breakfast one morning, a
woman said to her husband, “I bet
you dont know what day this is.”
“Of course I do,” he irritatingly
answered, going out the door to the
ofce. At 11AM, the doorbell rang,
and when the woman opened the
door, she was handed a bouquet of
red roses. At 2PM, a two pound box
of her favorite chocolates arrived.
Later, a boutique delivered a
designer dress. The woman couldnt
wait for her husband to come
home. “First the owers, then the
chocolates, and then the dress!”
she exclaimed. “Ive never had a
more wonderful ‘Independence Day
in all my life!”
