The 2015 Portsmouth Trojans
By Alex Hider
[email protected]
PORTSMOUTH — New conference.
New coach. New offense. New defense.
Just about the only similarities between
the Trojans of 2014 and 2015 are red
and blue.
After years of toiling against much
larger schools in the spread-out Southeastern Ohio Athletic League, Portsmouth and first-year coach Aaron Duncan have found greener pastures in the
Ohio Valley Conference.
A Portsmouth graduate and long-time
assistant, Duncan admitted he isn’t
familiar with his team’s new conference
opponents, but he already knows the
Trojans will be much more comfortable
in the OVC.
“To be honest, we were over our head
in the SEOAL,” Duncan said. “(The
OVC) is a more level playing field.”
And fortunately for Duncan, he has

a new weapon to deploy against the
likes of Fairland, Chesapeake and Coal
Grove: size.
Thanks to coach Chad Haman and a
revitalized weight program, Portsmouth
will be much larger in the trenches than
in years past. This season, the Trojans
list 16 players on their roster over 230
pounds, and as a result, Duncan has
retooled the Trojan offense to take
advantage.
Duncan hopes that Portsmouth’s huge
offensive line helps make up for a lack
of experience on the front five, which
includes just one returning starter —
senior Warren Goddard.
“We’ve never had this much depth,
but we have some youth in the trenches,” Duncan said.
While last season, Portsmouth relied
heavily on the arm and legs of quarterback Sky Oliver, the 2015 Trojans will
lean on a power running game out of
a pro-style offense. Returning running
“Cole (Lowery) started his
first varsity game last year,
going to Wheelersburg —
that’s asking a boy to step
into a man’s role. He did it
and he played pretty well.”
— Coach Aaron Duncan
backs Austin Hollins, Derray Richardson and Austin Mullins will carry
the load behind an offensive line of
Goddard, Andrew Holsinger, Anthony
Ferrara, Harrison Bianco and Levi Monraga.
The goal of the Trojan run game is to
take pressure off sophomore quarterback Cole Lowery — not that he can’t
deal with it. As a freshman in 2014,
Lowery started five games of relief of

wheelersburg pirates
By Chris Slone
[email protected]
WHEELERSBURG — The
Wheelersburg Pirates were
an overtime session away —
closer to a yard away — from
advancing to the state final
four last year, eventually
losing to Columbus Bishop
Hartley 41-38 in the Division
V, region 21 finals.
After finishing the 2014
season with an 11-2 mark
and missing out on an opportunity to capture a regional
title, Wheelersburg is set for
a rebuilding season — not
likely. In fact, don’t expect
many changes except the
names associated with the
jersey numbers.
“Same system, just different people,” Pirates head
coach Rob Woodward said.
One new player, at least on
the offensive side of the ball,
will be Kyle Davis who will
be lining up under center.
Davis has been a staple on
the team’s defense and now
he’s attempting to cement
himself in one of the area’s
highest-scoring offenses over
the past several seasons.
“Kyle brings a sense of
toughness to the position,”
Woodward said. “Not the
most explosive with his feet
but he’s effective. Not the
most strengthened arm in
terms of vertically throwing
it down the field but, has
been accurate, has gotten the
ball there on time…He’s been
a backup the last two years
and has been a three-year
starter in our secondary. So,
he knows what it’s like to
play varsity football, it’s just
more on the defensive side of
the ball”
Davis will certainly have
help on offense as Jordan
Howard and Chasen Burk
reprise their productive roles.
8
The 2015 Wheelersburg Pirates
Both players combined to
accumulate over 1,000 yards
of total offense last season.
The duo will be joined by
Keaton Newsome in the backfield, while Tanner Bivens is
utilized at receiver. Jake Darnell and Clint Hatfield will
line up at tight end.
“A lot of guys we can disburse the football too and we
want to continue to maintain
that balance (between) passing and run game the best we
can,” Woodward said.
An area of strength for
the Pirates will be up front
on the offensive line, which
averages 6-2 and 278 pounds.
Sam Hall, Brady Newsome
and Colin Ahad return to the
unit. Eil Whitley, who played
defense last year, will move
over and play guard this
season.
“As a coach, that’s what
I like to see in high-school
football, that size up front,”
Woodward said.
Defensively, Woodward
believes Wheelersburg is
ready to reach another level
as the unit will feature nine
seniors.
“This year we talked to
FALL SPORTS PREVIEW 2015

our kids
about high expectations and
setting the tone in terms of
defense. We’ve got a lot of
guys that love defense. Sometimes you get guys that love
offense, this group of guys
love defense,” Woodward
said.
Wheelersburg is still mixing and matching in the
defensive front six (4-2-5
scheme), but several of the
offensive lineman will play
on the defensive line. That
will allow the Pirates to have
a deep rotation.
One player to keep an eye
on is defensive end Austin
Ervin who is 6-foot-5, 190
pounds.
Hatfield and Darnell will
man the linebacker positions.
Darnell is making the switch
from the secondary and has
been described as “the hardest hitter on the entire team.”
Another linebacker to keep
an eye on is Xander Carmichael. The 6-foot-2, 200pound sophomore will have
an opportunity to see the
field when the Pirates move
Darnell back to the secondary to switch up the overall
look of the defense.
“(Carmichael’s) really
showed some promise at the
linebacker position,” Woodward said.
Woodward feels his secondary can be very tough against
opposing offense as Burk,
Howard, Wyatt Henderson,
Davis, Darnell, Divens and
Taylor Doerr will all have
an opportunity to show case
their talents.
As far as the battle in the
SOC II and the schedule are
concerned, it’ll be another
tough road for Wheelersburg
in 2015.
“Schedule looks tough as
always,” Woodward said.
“Ironton is going to be
tough…Portsmouth, new
coach, going to have see
what they’re doing and finding out if they’re spreading it
out. But again, they always
have athletes, have size, have
strengh.
“Ironton away, Jackson
away, Valley away, Minford
away, we’ve got a tough
realm.”

The 2015 West Senators
By Chris Slone
[email protected]
WEST PORTSMOUTH —
Ben Johnson’s first season at
the helm of the West football
program brought immediate results. The Senators
finished with a 7-3 regular
season record and earned a
first-round playoff appearance against Columbus
Bishop Hartley.
If year two is going to produce a similar feel, then West
is going to have to replace
some key components — and
quickly.
“We lost probably 80 percent of our offensive production,” Johnson said.
Fortunately for the Senators, Johnson has experienced upperclassman ready
to fill the void.
“We’ve got older guys,
we’ve got juniors that saw a
lot of playing time last year
that are stepping into those
roles,” Johnson said. “Now,
they’ve got another year of
experience in the system,
which the guys last year
didn’t have.”
The biggest question mark
this season is at quarterback,
where senior John Berry
looks to have the inside track
while sophomore Brady
Douthat has also been taking
reps. Johnson likes Berry’s
ability to run his pro-style
offense, which features several roll-outs and designed
quarterback runs.
“John is just an outstanding athlete,” Johnson said.
“He’s got a cannon for an
arm. He can fly. He’s big. He
won the state power lifting
meet in his weight class.
He’s just a stud, he’s the total
package.”
According to Johnson, the
offense isn’t going to change
with Berry at the helm. West
will still feature four-wide
receiver sets and can then go
back into two back with one
tight end formations.
“We can move around
seamlessly,” Johnson said.
“It’s not so much changing
what we do but just changing
the play calling a little bit.”
Aside from Berry, West
will be counting on Josh
Davis, Sam Kegley and Wesley Bailey to step up this season and provide a spark.
“Those guys we are going
to have to lean on to make
plays because they made
big plays for us last year,”
Johnson said. “They are just
going to have to step up that
much more this year.”
Davis, who led the Senators in tackles last year, will
be returning to his role as
an inside linebacker in the
team’s 4-4 scheme.
“Josh is just a hard worker
and just a leader in every
facet,” Johnson said.
Kegley is vying for a spot
as the team’s other inside
linebacker, while Berry will
once again play one of the
two outside linebacker positions.
Along the defensive line,
Bailey will once again be
playing the strong-side defensive end. Lining up on the
inside will be Hunter Reed,
who started as a freshman.
“(Reed’s) another year
stronger and bigger,” Johnson said. “We’re looking for
him to really step up now,
having a full year under his
belt.”
While Johnson is still
experimenting with differ-
ent personnel combinations
throughout training camp,
he laid out the philosophy of
the Senators, which revolves
around defense and special
teams.
“We have three offensive
goals: No fumbles. No interceptions. Score when you’re
in the red zone,” Johnson
said. “We feel if we don’t turn
the ball over and we score
when we get opportunities
up close, our defense and our
special teams will win the
game for us.”
Johnson believes he has the
philosophy to get his team
back to the playoffs in 2015
and he believes his kids are
ready for another opportunity at a postseason run.
“You hope you get a taste
of that playoff atmosphere
and that high level of football
just makes them that much
more hungry,” Johnson said.
“I just like how hard our guys
have worked this offseason.
To me, that shows that they
are hungry to get back to
that level.”

MINFORD — The bad
news for the Minford Falcons: They have missed the
playoffs on the final week of
the season the last two years.
So, what’s the good news for
Falcon fans?
Due to enrollment reconfigurations, Minford has
moved down from Division
IV to Division V, where the
Falcons were “meant to play
football,” according to head
coach Brent Daniels.
“We’re a Division V team,”
Daniels said. “We’re back
down in the division where
we feel good and where we
can do some things in the
playoffs. There’s a little less
pressure competing in a division you’re more comfortable
in.”
Daniels has set lofty goals
for the Falcons in 2015 but
with an experienced team
around him, he believes they
are ready to compete.
“I’m happy with our effort
and I’m happy where we’re
at so far,” Daniels said. “As
coaches, we’re always trying
to get better. We’ve got some
darn good football teams on
our schedule this year. We’ve
got to raise our level of play
up each and every week. We
expect nothing less than to
be in the competition for the
SOC and to be back in the
playoffs again.”
The experience begins
with the offensive line, which
is anchored by seniors Cain
Madden and Eli Daniels.
“They’ve been in there
since they were pups. We’re
looking for them to take
charge of the offensive line,”
Daniels said.
Trace Conley will once
again be manning his righttackle spot, while Samuel
Frazie and Devin Miller are
among the candidates trying
to crack the starting rotation.
The Falcons have a quarterback competition brewing
in camp as three players are
looking to win the job. Sophomore Noah Gray started the
last three games for Minford
last season. Junior Josh
Muck and senior Michael
Stiltner are also in the mix.
Stiltner has shown his versatility early in camp, splitting
time with the receivers and
the running backs when he’s
not under center.
In the backfield, the competition is just as fierce.
There are five players competing for playing time at
two spots — the I-back and
the fullback position. Stiltner,
Landon Collins, Kody Kennedy, Tyler Compton and
Casey Gaines are in the mix.
Depending on who starts,
the flow of each game will
determine who gets the bulk
of the carries.
“With the backfield, on
any Friday night, if we have
a kid with the hot hand, we
are going to stick with that
hot hand and rotate the other
one’s in some place else,”
Daniels said.
Defensively, Minford
returns most of its starters
from last year. Madden will
be anchoring the defensive
line. Simon Thoroughman
and Tyler Compton return to
their defensive-end positions.
Daniels will once again be
in charge of the linebackers,
who took a big hit when Dillon Shepherd, a starter last
season, tore his labrum and
was lost for the season.
“That’s a pretty hard loss
for us,” Daniels said. “Dillon
was an outstanding player.
He’s still with us everyday,
taking on assistant coaching
duties but that’s a loss that’s
going to hurt us this year.”
Overall, despite the loss of
Shepherd, Daniels believes
his defense has a chance to
leave its mark.
“The defense should be
pretty good this year,” Daniels said. “We’re going back
to the first couple years when
I started I coaching, being
able to move kids around and
give different looks.”
Daniels is excited about
the makeup of his roster.
However, if Minford wants
to return to the playoffs, he
knows his team is going to
have to take care of the ball.
“We’ve been working on
our turnover ratio,” he said.
“We turned the ball over way
too many times last year. It
cost us a couple of games
because we couldn’t hold
onto the football.”

“The problem with the
skill positions is that there’s
a lot of kids, but there’s a
such a big difference between
our starters and our second
string kids,” Crabtree said.
Crabtree also said that
the Indians have toyed with
a package in which senior
offensive lineman Drew Wolford would line up at fullback.
Even if Wolford doesn’t get to
tout the rock, he’ll still be the
focal point of an experienced
offensive line that includes
returning starters Gavin
Yazell, J.D. Dejarnette Jordan
Spradlin and Blake Brewer.
The Indians will also get a
boost from senior Eli Harr,
who returns to football after
a few years off.
On the defensive side of
the ball, returning starters
Blake Brewer and Drew Wolford join Heath Greathouse
and Nathan Riehl to plug
middle, while Romanello will
try to match his sack total
of 15 from a season ago.
Sophomore J.T. Ward, one of
the few Valley underclassmen
that should see extended
playing time, will slide in at
linebacker to take over Alex
Loop’s position. In addition,
Basham should contribute to
Valley’s fierce front seven at
linebacker.
In the defensive backfield,
Rolfe will continue to contribute on defense and again
try and lead the Indians in
interceptions like he did in
2014 as a free safety. Burk
and Howard will round out
the defensive backfield for
the Indians.
The 2014 Indians prided
themselves on having one of
the best special teams units
in the area, and this season should be no different.
Romanello, who plays soccer
in his spare time, will again
handle placekicking duties
after booting 49 extra points
a season ago. Rolfe will serve
as Valley’s punter, just as he
did last year.
If the Indians want to win
their fourth SOC II championship in the past five
years, they’ll again have to go
through the gauntlet of West,
Wheelersburg and Minford.
However, if the 2014 Indians prove anything, it’s that
anything can happen come
playoff time.
“It’s a game of opportunities. We finished third in our
league, and ended up being
regional champions — you
don’t know,” Crabtree said.

The 2015 Northwest Mohawks
By Chris Slone
[email protected]
McDERMOTT — The
2014 season was anything
but conventional for the
Northwest Mohawks. First,
the Mohawks were forced
to play 10 roads games after
problems arose with their
playing field. But that minor
setback didn’t derail Northwest who finished with a 4-1
conference record — their
first year in the SOC I —
and claimed a share of a
conference title for the first
time in school history.
Mohawks head coach
Brooks Fry believes playing home games at Trojan
Coliseum in Portsmouth
indirectly helped his team
compete for a conference
crown last year.
“We went to Symmes Valley last year and Oak Hill in
the same season,” Fry said.
“Those are two tough trips
and to be able to split those
games — and have a chance
in the other one — I think
22
maybe playing at Portsmouth helped us out in that
regard because those long
trips didn’t affect us as much
as it might have if we had
been playing regular home
games.”
After a successful season, expectations are high
in 2015 for the Mohawks,
who have 14 seniors on the
roster.
“We are looking to build
on that. Now, you see if you
can take that next step and
try to get over .500 at least,
and try to work your way
into the playoffs,” Fry said.
On position that will feature a new face is quarterback, where sophomore Garrett Rowe replaces departed
senior Drew Scarberry.
“The one question mark
coming in was his leadership
ability,” Fry said. “Garrett’s
not a real vocal guy, but he’s
kind of come out of his shell.
I think he understands now
that he has to run the show
offensively. He’s really starting to take the leadership
FALL SPORTS PREVIEW 2015
role on offense.”
Even though the Mohawks
will still rely heavily on
their double-tight offense,
Northwest will also utilize a
shotgun package.
“We’d like to be able to
throw it a little bit more,”
Fry said. “We’ve got some
guys out there on the outside that we feel we can use
more so than what we’ve had
in the past. We’ve got to be
able to loosen teams up a
little bit.”
Those skilled positioned
players include Donnie
Borens, Jordan Brigner, Austin Jenkins, Trevan Bazler
and Michael Lajoye.
“They are some guys out
there that can run and they
can all catch pretty well,”
Fry said. “Hopefully we’ll be
able to find ways to get them
the ball in the open field.”
Up front, seniors John
Whitt, Tyler Ellis and Jacob
Lute anchor an experienced
offensive line. Junior Marcus
Mitchell and freshman Bruce
join those seniors up front.
Last season, turnovers
plagued the Mohawk
offense. While Borens, Brigner and Jenkins will be
the primary ball carriers on
opening night, the Northwest coaching staff has
stressed ball control.
“We can’t have negative
plays because it’s hard to
make up for that…we can’t
have turnovers, getting
behind the chains, stupid
penalties,” Fry said. “You
just preach to the running
backs, locking down on the
ball. That’s basically all you
can do. There’s not really a
whole lot of drills you can
do for that. Just preach to
them that ball security it key
for us.”
On defense, the Mohawks
have eight returning starters. Along the line, Zack
Lute will play the nose.
Hobby and Andrew Howard
will play the tackles, while
Garrett Simon and Kyle Leslie will man the end spots.
See MOHAWKS | 23
MOHAWKS, continued from 22
Brigner and Dawson Ruth
will play the linebacker spots.
In the secondary, Jenkins and
Ashton Hall will line up at
safety, while Bazler and Lajoye
will play the corner positions.
Fry is hopeful his defense is
quicker this season.
“We are trying to utilize a
little more speed on defense,”
Fry said. “None of our o-line,
except the two tight-ends,
start on defense. We like to try
to keep those guys fresh.”
With an experience squad,
the next step for the Mohawks
is a postseason birth, which
according to Fry, isn’t going to
be an easy task.
“Three quarters of the
teams in our region are perennial playoff teams,” Fry said.
“You’re probably looking at 8-2
to have a shot at the playoffs.
Basically if you go 8-2, you’re
looking at competing for the
conference championship.
Hopefully we’ll be able to do
that again.”

CELEBRATING 51 YEARS OF SERVICE
1964-2015
51 years ago my parents Roger and Lillian Davis started the Roger W Davis Funeral Home here in
West Portsmouth. My wife Leichia and I are carrying on the tradition of serving our community.
We believe that service is the most important aspect of what we do.
We try to personalize every funeral to afamily’s utmost request.
Every year we celebrate the annual “Tree of Remembrance Memorial Service” which was started in
1993. This service is held the second Saturday in December. Every year we have different speakers and
a special singing guest to celebrate the event. The West High School Chorus has blessed this service
with their singing every year.
The “Tree of Remembrance” stays illuminated throughout the holiday season.

The 2015 East Tartans
By Chris Slone
[email protected]
SCIOTOVILLE — The
East Tartans finished the
2014 season with a 5-5
record and have been labeled
as a “team to watch” in 2015.
However, before the Tartans
attempt to have a break-out
season, first-year head coach
James Gifford has some personnel decisions to make.

Chris Slone | PDT Sports
The first decision for Gifford, who has been involved
in the program the last four
years as an assistant, is to
name a starting quarterback.
After spending the summer
alternating between juniors
Drew Lowe and Akia Brown,
Gifford named Lowe the
new signal caller. Lowe will
be running a spread offense
with some Pro-I formations
mixed in from time to time.

“Drew this year as picked
up some speed,” Gifford said.
“We feel like we can still do
some zone-read type stuff.”
Brown, who is looking for
his third-straight 1,000 yard
season, will be the team’s primary running back, although
he will see some time at
quarterback throughout the
season.
Another skill player that
will alleviate some of the
pressure off Brown is junior
Zane Scott.
“He’ll be a good skilled
player for us,” Gifford said.
“He’ll be that slot guy.”
Ethan Gifford and Ethan
Carver will also line up in
the backfield at various times
this season. On the outside, JD Hatcher is a player

According to Gifford, East
doesn’t have a shortage of
skilled players.
“We’ve got some athletes,
the problem is we’ve got
more athletes and we need
some of them to turn into
lineman,” Gifford said jokingly.
Gifford acknowledged the
one area of concern for the
Tartans is the offensive line,
where sophomore tackle
Blaine Scott looks to anchor
the unit.
“Even him with his ability,
the fact of it is, he’s still only
a sophomore,” Gifford said.

The 2015 Notre Dame Titans
By Alex Hider
[email protected]
PORTSMOUTH — With
just 23 players on its roster, it
will be an uphill battle for the
Notre Dame Titans in 2015.
Just two seasons removed
from making the playoffs,
Notre Dame is still trying to
replace the talent from a huge
2013 graduating class.
However, Titan coach Bob
Ashley isn’t going to let his
team back down from the
challenge.
“That’s part of being a
small school, and we understand that,” he said. “We just
won’t know what we have
until we’re under fire.”
The Titans will rely heavily
on a core of five returning
starters from a season ago,
two of which are locked in a
tight quarterback battle.
Whether Ashley decides
on junior Isiah Johnson or
sophomore Drew Cassidy,
his choice will set the basis
for Notre Dame’s philosophy
Alex Hider | PDT
in the wing-T offense. The
quick and agile Johnson
will allow the Titans to run
more option, while Cassidy’s
strong arm and quick thinking provides an effective
aerial attack.
“We’re just trying to find
the kid that can move the
team down the field efficiently and make everyone else
better,” Ashley said.
Ashley also suggested that
he may use both quarterbacks
throughout the season, using
Cassidy in a shotgun in passing situations while using
Johnson in the option attack.
He also noted that whoever is
not playing quarterback will
still see significant playing
time at another position.
Notre Dame will rely on
senior Michael Collins and
junior Sam Kayser to lead
the rushing attack from
the wing back positions in
2015. Collins will be the
Titans’ leading returning
rusher after picking up 670
yards and six touchdowns
“We’re just trying to find the kid that can
move the team down the field efficiently and
make everyone else better.”
— Coach Bob Ashley
last season, while Kayser
totaled 450 yards and seven
TDs. Junior Hunter Harrell
will again open holes as the
Titans’ fullback.
A pair of sophomores —
Billy Book and Noah Baisden
— will take over at tight end
for the Titans, while Grant
Sparks moves out from guard
to take over at tight end.
Perhaps the Titans’ biggest
weakness comes on the offensive and defensive line. After
the graduation of C.J. Smith,
Evan Corriell and Charlie
Eichenlaub in 2015, Notre
Dame loses a lot of experience and size in the trenches.
Luckily, they’ll have junior
Aaron Bazler returning at
guard and linebacker in 2015.
“He’s a tough kid,” Ashley
said.
On the defensive side of
the ball, Sparks and Tyler
Speas will held up the front
end of Notre Dame’s flexible
4-3 defense, while Harrell,
Bazler and Collins will slide
in at linebacker. Bazler led
the Titans last season with
over 100 tackles, while Collins finished close behind.
The Notre Dame secondary will be led by Kayser and
Johnson, who swap positions from last season. Kayer
moves from cornerback to
strong safety, while Johnson
moves from safety to corner.
One of the biggest
strengths for the Titans
comes on special teams,
where Cassidy will once
again handle placekicking

duties after a stellar 2014 campaign. In a
league where true kickers are few and far
between, Ashley is glad that he can count on
his sophomore for some easy points.
“He’s a weapon,” Ashley said. “He’s
impressive for as young as he was last year.
He’s only gotten stronger and better this
year.”
Ashley hopes that the young Titans can
get their growing pains out of the way early,
as Notre Dame opens the season with nonconference games against Racine Southern,
Manchester and Grove City Christian. Notre
Dame then hosts Eastern in its first-ever
SOC I game, and then will face all three 2014
SOC I co-champions in a four-week span
beginning with Oak Hill on Sept. 26.
“There’s still a lot of unknowns with this,
and we’re going to have to learn in a hurry,”
Ashley said. “But they’re a great bunch of
young men, and they’re doing everything
we’ve asked out of them.”

starter in 2014) and Ryan Williams, as
well as senior tight ends Zach DeLotell
and Caden Lowery.
On the defensive side of the ball, the
Portsmouth will move to a 4-4 scheme,
with junior Mike Adkins, a 330 pound
junior, leading the charge on the defensive line.
“He’s putting roots down, you’re
going to have a hard time moving him
or trapping him. He’s going to need two
blocks,” Duncan said.
Adkins will be joined by D.J. Pearsall,
Jadan Josey, and Caden Lowery. Behind
them, a quad of Trojan linebackers in
DeLotell, Mullins, Hollins and Travis
McKenzie will be ready to clean up.
DeLotell, Austin Mullins and Hollins
will return to their starting positions
from a season ago.
“The linebackers will be our
strength,” Duncan said.
In the secondary, Dylan Mullins,
Blake Wedebrook and Richardson will
combine with Purdy and Cole Lowery
for a stable rotation of fresh bodies.
Finally, though he’s doesn’t quite
fit the mold, DeLotell will handle the
kicking duties on special teams. He may
not look the part, but DeLotell nailed
a clutch field goal against Waverly
last season to help save a win for
Portsmouth.
In addition to their new conference
opponents, Portsmouth will continue to
play its traditional slate of tough nonconference games, including contests
against Valley, West and Wheelersburg.
Though they haven’t reached the playoffs since 2007, the Trojans have every
reason to be optimistic now that they’ve
finally found a home in the OVC.
“There’s no better way to get a program back on its feet than to win,”
Duncan said.

2014, coach Ted Newsome
knew he had his work cut

man Brice Slayers. He and
Blevins are the only two
four-year players in the
Green football program.
“(Salyers and Blevins)
are showing the young kids
what it takes to be successful as a high school football
player,” Newsome said.
“They’re an inspiration to
the younger kids and I’m

On the defensive side of
the ball, Slayers will be the
focal point of the Bobcats’
defensive line, while Blevins
will back him up from the
linebacker position in a 4-4
scheme.
“(Blevins) is going to be
a guy we’ll be counting on
both offensively and defensively,” Newsome said.
Though Newsome expects
as many as nine players will
be playing both ways for the
Bobcats this season, he’s
thrilled to have a bit more
depth to work with in 2015.
Last season, Green entered
the season with 14 available players and finished
the season with just 13.
This season, he’ll have as
many as 21 bodies to work
with. More importantly,
every player on the Bobcats’
roster is ready and able to
contribute.

“Every kid we got can play,”
Newsome said. “We have no dead
weight. I don’t know how long it’s
been since we’ve had 21 kids that
we can actually get into the game
on Friday night, and I wouldn’t
blink an eye to put any of those
kids in.”
According to Newsome, continued participation increases are
vital to the revitalization of the
Green football program. He says
that if he can increase the size of
his team to 30 players, the Bobcats would be extremely competitive “within a year or two.”
Newsome also hopes that a
refurbished weight room will help
improve the level of play for his
Bobcats this fall. The Green athletic boosters raised about $5,000
in donations in hopes that the
Bobcats could return to competitiveness.
“We’ve really made a commitment to getting stronger and faster, because we know those were
our two big areas of deficiency
last year,” he said.
As far as an expectation for
the 2015 season, Newsome isn’t
interested in looking at wins and
losses. However, he does promise
the Bobcats will be much more
competitive in the upcoming season.
“We want to win, but it’s second in that how we preformed,”
he said. “Did we give all we had?
Did we honor the game and did
we honor the name on the front
of the jersey and the people that
care about us? That’s our goal.”
All in all, Newsome hopes that
his program extends beyond
much more than just football.
“We call ourselves ‘The Furnace
Boys’ and we want to be representative of the hard-working and
honest people that live there in
Franklin Furnace. We try to represent them by how hard we play
and the determination,” he said.
“We’re trying to prepare these
boys to be men some day. If we
can help them do that, we’ve been
part of something special.”

The 2015 Symmes Valley Vikings
By Jim Walker
Ironton Tribune
WILLOW WOOD — Rusty
Webb doesn’t want much,
but indirectly he’s asking for
a lot.
Webb begins his 15th season just three wins shy of
100 career victories, but that
milestone isn’t even close to
what he wants.
So what’s on his early
Christmas list?
“We just want to stay away
from injuries like anyone,”
said Webb. “We’re not as
deep as we’ve been, but we
like the makeup of our team.”
Having nine of 11 starters
back on offense from a team
that went 6-5, won a share of
the Southern Ohio Conference title and qualified for
the playoffs for the 11th time
in school history — the ninth
under Webb’s tenure — can
help with the makeup of any
team.
Another thing that Webb
likes about the makeup of his
Jim Walker | Ironton Tribune
team is a senior class of 12
players, that largest senior
group during his tenure.
Webb said the large number of seniors is reflective in
how well the team has been
practicing.
“Our practice scheme
doesn’t change, but we can
definitely tell (the difference)
because we can expand the
playbook,” said Webb. “It
helps with our work ethic.
They help the younger kids
with drills. It makes practice
go smoother.
“We have good leadership.
I wish I could point to one,
but all of them are leaders.
They are a very tight-knit
group. But they’re very competitive.”
But that one thorn in the
team’s makeup still sticks in
Webb’s side.
“We’re on the thin side,”
he said.
On offense, senior Derrek
Smith (5-10, 185) is back
under center and gives the
Vikings a passing threat that
“We like to rotate linemen in and out. It
builds depth, gives the kids a taste of what
it’s like to play in a varsity game, and it
keeps the offense fresh.”
— Coach Rusty Webb
will keep opposing defenses
from stacking the line of
scrimmage to stop the running game.
Smith missed his sophomore season with a knee
injury and was forced to take
a cram course in learning last
year.
“He had a steep learning
curve. We want to do the
ground and pound, but we’ll
do what the defense gives us
and Derrek gives us the ability to do that,” said Webb.
There is depth with junior
Payton Hayes — he played
quarterback as a sophomore but moved to running
back last year when Smith
returned — and sophomore
Austin Waugh (5-10, 155).
“We have the people if you
load the line of scrimmage
to throw the ball. It’s just an
understanding of our routes
and not just Derrek but the
receivers as well,” said Webb.
The Vikings have the most
depth on their team at the
running back position with
as many as seven players
capable of filling the three
spots.
Hayes (5-8, 180) will rotate
with seniors Collin Webb
(6-0, 175) and Brandon Craft
(5-11, 170) at halfback. Also
in the mix is junior Levi
Cade (6-3, 190).
Senior Cameron Meadows

tight end to fullback and
behind him is sophomore
Derik Brace (5-8, 155).
Webb said that in an
emergency Smith can play
fullback.
“We have depth there. We
can wear on people. They
can all catch the ball and
they block for each other.
Derrek has played fullback
so he’s not afraid to run,”
said Webb.
Protecting the Hayes and
the stable of skilled players
is an experienced offensive
line.
Four starters are back
on the inside that includes
seniors Tyler Dement (6-0,
195) and Travis Gates
(5-11, 185) at guard, senior
Dakota Watson (6-5, 240) at
right tackle and sophomore
Ian McClease (5-11, 260) at
center.
Working his way into
the starting lineup at the
other tackle is junior Jordan
Hieronimus (6-4, 280).
Senior Blake Bowen (6-0,
220) will be the swingman
as he is the backup at guard
and center. Sophomore

“We like to rotate linemen

gives the kids a taste of
what it’s like to play in a varsity game, and it keeps the
offense fresh.
If Symmes Valley wants to
capture the SOC I title, it’ll
have another challenge task
ahead. The league is changing for the second straight
year. Northwest dropped
down from the SOC II last
year and Beaver Eastern
will play its first season of
varsity football and join the
league schedule.
“We shared the league
with Northwest and Oak
Hill, so you have to expect
all three of us to be among
the favorites,” said Webb
who guided the Vikings
to their eighth SOC title.
“Everybody in the league
has a lot of people back and
now you add Eastern to the
mix.”

The 2015 Oak Hill Oaks
By Chris Slone
[email protected]
OAK HILL — Recently,
the Oak Hill Oaks have been
synonymous with winning.
Over the last six seasons, the
Oaks have won or shared the
SOC I title five times.
Oak Hill finished the season with a 7-3 overall record
and a 4-1 conference mark.
However, a move to Division V has Oaks head coach
Nathan Dugan believing a
seven-win season just won’t
cut it in 2015.
“You look at the history
and the traditions of the
teams in our regions, it’s the
who’s who of southern Ohio,”
Dugan said. “We know going
into this year, you have very
little room for error if you
want to make the playoffs…
with a first glance at our
region, you realize you can’t
talk about the playoffs unless
you’re 8-2.”
The biggest advantage for
Oak Hill is depth. The Oaks
believe they have several
players capable of succeeding of Friday nights and they
plan on testing their theory.
According to Dugan, Oak
Hill has been rotating players
at every position and there’s
40
a possibility the Oaks will
start different players each
contest.
“Our goal this year is to
have three guys for every two
positions on the field and to
rotate as much as possible,”
Dugan said. “This year, we’re
hoping to use our numbers to
our advantage, keep people
fresh that way and play a lot
of guys on Friday night.”
Two spots where Dugan
believes he has an abundance
of talent is at fullback and
linebacker. Matt Gilliland,
Matt Carpenter and Tyler
Trisch are all expected to
split time in the backfield
and in the middle of his 4-4
scheme. According to Dugan,
the two players who are
excelling will start at the two
inside-linebacker spots and
the third will get the nod at
the fullback spot. However,
all three players will rotate
throughout each contest.
Carpenter is a bit of an
unknown commodity. The
Oak coaching staff was
excited about his potential as
a sophomore, but that potential never materialized as
different illnesses sidelined
him for the majority of the
season.
“It was a pretty fluke
FALL SPORTS PREVIEW 2015
thing,” Dugan said. “He was
only available to us for only
two games. The two games
he was available for us, he
started.”
Defensively, the Oaks have
a solid back end, although
Dugan admitted they probably don’t have the depth the
rest of the team has. Willy
Harris, an All-District player
last year, will be manning
the free-safety spot. Andrew
Kerns and Lane Burdine
will be joining Harris in the
defensive backfield, as both
players are expected to be
the team’s opening day corners.
“As far as our defensive
backfield is concerned, we
might be a little be thinner
there, but we’ve got three
quality players, and we’ve got
a couple of other guys that
are chomping at the bit to get
on the field,” Dugan said.
The biggest strength of
the Oak defense — literally
and figuratively — is on the
defensive line. Led by Jacob
Waldren, the Oaks plan on
rotating eight players on
game days.
“Realistically, you’re looking at eight guys that could
play on the defensive line,”
Dugan said. “If you can
rotate eight guys on Friday
night, then you’re going to
keep people fresh.”
Offensively, the Oaks are
making a switch from the
power-I to a double-wing
formation. The transformation was made with a stable
of five quality running backs
in mind.
Oak Hill has Willy Harris,
Andrew Kearns, Chris Coy,
Zach Fisher and Cameron
Potter ready to tote the rock
this season. The Oaks will
also feature Lane Burdine
who will be directing the
offense from under center
this season.
“Lane Burdine, senior, has
been a very good back up
for us for two years,” Dugan
said. “Has really pushed our
starters for two years. A kid
that — at any time last year
— could’ve come in and been
a quality quarterback for us
…“
The Oaks shared the SOC I
title with Symmes Valley and
first-year member Northwest
last season. Oak Hill hopes
it’s depth will bring home
another conference championship in 2015.

The 2015 Eastern Eagles
By Alex Hider
[email protected]
BEAVER — After three
years of building their football program from scratch,
the Eastern Eagles will finally make the jump to Division
VII varsity football in 2015.
But Eastern head coach Scott
Tomlinson says his Eagles
aren’t just happy being in the
show. They want to be the
star.
“I want to compete for the
league,” he said. “Depending
on if we get the right wins
here or there, I honestly feel
like…we could compete for
the playoffs. I don’t see any
reason why we couldn’t.”
One thing’s for sure — this
season’s Eastern squad will
be unlike anything the SOC I
has ever seen.
On offense, the Eagles will
feature a wide-open spread
offense, often times keeping
four wide receivers on the
field. According to Tomlinson, Eastern quarterback
Ethan Leist “will never be
under center.”
The Eagle offense sticks

heavy power offenses in the
SOC I. Tomlinson hopes to
throw a wrench into rival
defenses by deviating from
the norm.
“Hopefully, that’s a little
thing for our advantage, having to prepare for something
different,” he said.
The Eagle offense begins
with Leist, a dual-threat
quarterback with a strong
arm and quick feet. Following a run-first philosophy,
Leist will be able to hand the
ball to tailback Cole Fremont,
a 6-1, 205 pound senior. Tomlinson is also looking for big
things out of first-year running back Bryce Webb.
“He’s a wild card,” Tomlinson said. “He seems to
be pretty athletic and very
aggressive. We won’t know
until we get him in pads.”
If opposing defenses stack
the box against the Eagles,
Leist will have no problem
finding speeding receivers. Owen Strong — who
was named Eastern’s most
improved player in 2014 — is
a deep threat with good size

Piketon’s spread offense.
“There’s a lot of yards and
receptions out there to be
made up for, but I think those
guys will do a nice job,” he
said.
On the defensive side of
the ball, the Redstreaks welcome back six of their starting front seven from a season
ago. They’ll again be led by
senior middle linebacker
Matt Smith, who was named
special All-District in 2014.
Smith will also split time at
right tackle on the offensive
side of the ball.
Smith will be joined by fellow three-year starting linebacker Dylan Yoakem, while
Robertson and junior Chance
McNelly are fighting for time
at the third linebacker position.
In front of them, Bradley
Chitwood and Williams will
pressure the quarterback
from the defensive end positions, while senior Noah
Ransdell and Bradley Willet
will plug up the middle as
defensive tackles.
Piketon will have some
catching up to do in the secondary, as all three starters
will see their first snaps at
their respective positions.
Birkhimer and Harris will
split time at saftey, and
Andrew Thompson and Eric
Mullins will line up at corner.
The Redstreaks battled
through costly injuries to a
5-5 record in 2014, as Brewster, Smith and Williams
were all forced to miss time
at some point last year. However, Piketon finished strong,
winning their last two games
to reach the .500 mark.
The highlight of Piketon’s
2014 season came in week
nine, when the Redstreaks
knocked off eventual SVC cochampion Paint Valley with a
36-23 road win.
“That was a huge win
for us. That was the team I
expected all year, but it did
give us some confidence
heading into the offseason,”
Gullion said.
Though Unioto and Paint
Valley return a good amount
of experience in 2015, Piketon hopes it can stay healthy
and make some noise in the
SVC in the upcoming year.
“It will be a wide-open
year, and that’s what’s great
about our league. There’s
really not a dominant team
year after year. It’s pretty
competitive,” Gullion said.

The 2015 Waverly Tigers
By Alex Hider
[email protected]
WAVERLY — After a
disappointing 3-7 season in
2014, the Waverly Tigers
went back to the drawing
board, and what the coaching
staff has put together for this
season is unlike any Tiger
team that has taken the field
in the past half-decade.
With the majority of the
Tigers’ large, bruising backs
having graduated over the
past two seasons, Waverly
has a new weapon to work
with: speed. Head coach
Chris Crabtree hopes to use
it to his advantage in 2015
with a brand-new Pistol
offense.
“We’ll be a little faster and
a little more skilled,” he said.
“It’s going to be a little different than what we’ve done
the past couple of years — a
little more exciting, a little
more up-tempo. Our kids
have bought in to it.”
But before the Tigers take
the field, Crabtree and his
staff must decide on a signalcaller for the upcoming
season. He’ll choose between
junior Logan Kottenbrook,
a starting wide receiver on
last year’s offense, and sopho-
more Clayton Howell.
No matter who gets the
call, Crabtree knows that
his quarterback will be able
to execute the Tigers’ new
offense.
“I feel confident that if
someone were to get hurt,
both of them know the
offense,” he said. “Both of
these guys can step in and
take over. Our playbook isn’t
going to shrink.”
According to Crabtree, the
speedy Kottenbrook will do
damage with both his arm
and his leg, while the Tiger
offense benefits from Howell’s intelligence and poise.
Whoever takes the snaps
for Waverly will have the
benefit of handing off to tailbacks Drew Harris or Tyrell
Chenowith, both of whom
contributed to the running
game last season. While the
Tigers lost a true fullback in
Devon Rigsby to graduation
last season (1,046 yards, AllDistrict selection in 2014),
they’ll rely on H-backs Garrett Moore, Johnny Thompson and Drew Kritzwiser to
open up holes.
The Tigers will also rely
heavily on receivers Mason
Chapman (a returning
starter from 2014) and Cade
Marquez as well as tight end
Tyreke Gilbert to catch passes in the upcoming season.
Waverly’s deepest and
most experienced position
group is in the trenches,
where seniors Aaron Elliott,
River Sears, Abe Kelley and
Andrew Trego will lead the
way. While the Tigers have
sacrificed size for speed at
most other positions, they
still remain big up front —
the four seniors weigh an
average of 267 pounds.
Those seniors will also
see time on the defensive
side of the ball in the Tigers’
three-man front. Sears will
return to his linebacker spot
for a second-consecutive
year, where he’ll be joined
by junior Tate Evans. In the
defensive backfield, Kottenbrook, Tariq Gilbert, Chenowith and Marquez will all
see extended snaps.
Though it’s been a few
years since Waverly has
deployed an odd-man front,
Crabtree says it compliments
what his team is doing on
offense.
“We’re going to rely on our
speed and we’re going to be
more aggressive. We’re going
to bring some folks, probably
more so than we’ve done the
past few years,” he said.
With the expansion of the
Ohio Valley Conference, the
Tigers were forced to get creative with their non-conference scheduling. County rival
Piketon is the only common
non-conference opponent
from a season ago. Following
the Redstreaks, they’ll take
on fellow SVC opponents
Unioto and Zane Trace, two
of the top three finishers in
their conference in 2014.
“They’re not exactly pushovers,” Crabtree said.
From there, Waverly will
travel two hours north to
face Morral Ridgedale, and
then travel two hours east
to face Caldwell. The Tigers
will face the two Division VII
opponents on back-to-back
Saturdays.
As for the SOC II, the landscape looks just as tough as
it did last season. However,
Crabtree hopes that with his
revamped offense and stingy
defense, the Tigers will be
competitive in 2015.
“There’s no easy weeks for
us once we get into league
play. We just have to come
out one play at a time and
see what happens,” he said.

“It’s pivotal for us to get off to a good start.
With the group we’ve got coming back, I’ve
got high expectations for them as have
they.”
— Head coach Mark Vass
He work on his quarterbacking on his own. He’s throwing the ball pretty well.
“We’re going to be a running team, that’s how I see
it. We’re going to find out as
we go, but I’m confident in
Jake’s abilities.”
Ironton returns seniors
Brock Midkiff-Sands (5-8,
250), Hayden Robinson (6-3,
300) and Ronnie Artis (5-8,
215) as well as junior Tyler
Webb (6-6, 300) on the offensive line.
“We have four returning
starters, so they’ve been
through it on Friday nights.
The only change is we’re
trying to move Sands to
guard (from center),” said
Vass who is looking at either
juniors Levi Langdon (6-4,
295) and Kyle Bryant (6-4,
215) or senior Josh Allen
(6-2, 210) to play center.
Also back is senior tight
end Lucas Campbell (6-5,
210) who is a three-year
starter along with Sands and
Webb.
The other end figures to
be senior Travis Carey with
junior Eli Willis and freshman Tanner Wilson both getting playing time.
Defensively the Fighting
Tigers will have Robinson
back at defensive tackle and
Campbell at one end. The

Sands and Artis.
The other end is a battle
between Wilson, Willis, Allen and
Bryant.
Young — an All-Ohio linebacker
last season — anchors the defense
and will have Barker his running
mate in place of the graduated Jeremy Bodmer. Wilson and Artis are
the backups.
The secondary lost three of its
four starters with only Palladino
back at safety, but Vass said the
replacements have the ability and
knowledge to fill those voids.
Isaac will be the other safety
after starting two games last
season due to injuries. Carey and
sophomore Garrett Carrico (5-11,
175) will be the corners.
Also in the mix will be Chase
Rowe and Willis.
Ironton and Portsmouth join the
Ohio Valley Conference this season, but the Fighting Tigers still
have a tough non-league schedule
with Wheelersburg and the Kentucky trio of Russell, perennial
power Beechwood, and Ashland.
“It’s pivotal for us to get off to a
good start. With the group we’ve
got coming back, I’ve got high
expectations for them as have
they,” said Vass.

The 2015 Greenup County Musketeers
By Chris Slone
[email protected]
LLOYD, Ky. — The Greenup County Musketeers
haven’t had a winning season
in 14 years. Despite making
the playoffs last season, Greenup County once again fell
short of the elusive .500 mark,
finishing with a 4-6 record in
the regular season.
However, four of those six
losses were by one score.
“We had a change to win
eight,” Musketeers head
coach Chris Mullins said.
“There have only been
three eight win teams in the
school’s history.
“Our team goals last season
were to have a winning season and make the playoffs. We
did make the playoffs but we
didn’t have a winning season.
Our team goals this year are
to have a home playoff game,
which means we finish in the
top two in our district and to
have that first winning season
since 2002.”
Greenup County has the
experience to achieve its
goals, returning nine starters on offense and nine on
defense. The offense begins

with quarterback Jared Hunt,
a three-year starter, who is
back under center for his
senior campaign.
“He’s like a coach on the
field,” Mullins said. “He’s just
never put up any numbers
statistically that would show
anyone just how talented he
really is but he’s a very talented quarterback.”
Hunt will have an opportunity to put up bigger numbers
this season as the Musketeers
will feature more of a spread
look, which will consist of
zone-running concepts as
well as quick passing routes,
designed to get the ball in the
hands of Greenup County’s
skilled-position players in
space.
Those skilled position players begin with Ryan Bird and
Jack White. Bird is rejoining
the Musketeer offense after
tearing his ACL last year.
During his sophomore season,
Bird rushed for 1,000 yards in
only six games. White is coming off a sophomore campaign
in which he contributed 10
touchdowns to the Greenup
County offense. According
to Mullins, White is the fastest player on the team with
